Madeley Matters The New Town story is picked up at the end of April 1968 when a public enquiry is held into the expansion of the New Town. The Independent Inspector was Walter Lane, clerk from Lincoln County Council. Locally, drainage works started in preparation for building the Woodside estate and the Dawley Development Corporation announced plans for the Madeley Educational and Recreational Centre at a estimated cost of £1 million. In May, properties in Court Street were demolished to make way for the construction of Parkway. At the end of May, the Red Admiral pub was opened by Ansells Brewery Limited on the Sutton Hill estate. The first publican was Cecil (Frank) Chinn who with his wife Mamie had moved from running the Globe pub in Walsall. A large GRP butterfly sign was erected on the outside of the pub. It was designed by John Merilion from Alexander Fine Arts in Birmingham. Elsewhere on the estate, the Sutton Hill junior school was occupied. The headmaster was Dennis P Edwards who later suggested that the school was renamed after famous microbiologist Alexander Fleming. This was the first new school completed by Dawley Development Corporation. In June, the Spar supermarket in the Sutton Hill local centre was opened by actress Susan Hanson (Miss Diane from Crossroads). In July, the Sutton Hill Local Centre was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham (Alderman Charles Simpson) who unveiled a plaque on a wall by the entrance to the community centre. Facilities included a child health centre managed by Miss Ruth Dancer. Later in the month, it was the turn of the Bishop of Hereford to officially open the new pastoral centre. As families starting moving into the estate their experiences were featured in a BBC documentary called “A splendid place to live” which was broadcast on the 11th July. It followed the Hirst family who had moved from Birmingham to Dawley and was narrated by Phillip Donnellan. Madeley Matters

The New Town story is picked up at the end of April 1968 when a public enquiry is held into the expansion of the New Town.

The headmaster was Dennis P Edwards who later suggested that the school was renamed after famousmicrobiologist Alexander Fleming. This was the first new school completed by Dawley

Development Corporation.

In June, the Spar supermarket in

the Sutton Hill local centre was

opened by actress Susan Hanson (Miss Diane from Crossroads).

In July, the Sutton Hill Local Centre was officially opened by the Lord Mayor

of Birmingham (Alderman Charles Simpson) who unveiled a plaque on a wall

by the entrance to the community centre. Facilities included a child health

centre managed by Miss Ruth Dancer. Later in the month, it was the turn of

the Bishop of Hereford to officially open the new pastoral centre.

As families starting moving into the estate their experiences were featured in

a BBC documentary called “A splendid place to live” which was broadcast on

most reflecting working-class lives.

Notes fromMadeley Orchard

Those of you who visit the orchard will have noticed the blossom beginning to cover the fruit trees. It’s a beautiful time of year so please come andenjoy. Our volunteers are busy deadheading and weeding the beds so they will be an inviting place for the bees and butterflies. You may also have noticed that the road leading down to the orchard is now resurfaced and wheelchair friendly.

On a not-so-happy note, it seems that a few people feel they can come and remove plants for their own gardens. To date, we have lost all the raspberry canes, all the strawberries and 6 rhubarb plants. We actually replaced the first stolen strawberries and rhubarb and, within a couple of days, they disappeared too. This means that, sadly, we won’t have these fruits to share with the community. It is really heart breaking for our volunteers, who work so hard. Please remember that the orchard is for all to enjoy and, with your help, we will do our best to keep it that way.

The Story so far…for Sutton Hill Community CentreBack in 2016 when Telford and Wrekin Council announced they would no longer run Sutton Hill Community centre, all was not lost, because a group of local people decided they could make it work. So, they formed a new charity called Sutton Hill Community Trust, and in April 2017 the keys were handed over. Sutton Hill Community Centre embarked on its new journey with a new name, “The Hub on the Hill”.

What’s happened in the past year?

The centre was opened with new leadership and new staff to create a new future while continuing to provide opportunities for community groups to meet as well as developing new ones.

The achievements so far have been many but include a very busy café a new coffee lounge, lots of brand new activities including, Tai-Chi, Yoga, Singing, summer Youth Activities, the creation of a Beaver group, the opening of a Barbers and a Dance Academy and many new faces popping in to see us and join in.

What’s next for the trust and community centre? There are lots of exciting plans including the reopening of the youth club, a full programme of summer activities for young people, the creation of a new piece of art for the centre involving all sections of the community as well as continuing to develop new projects that support the community of Sutton Hill.

So please pop in and see us, have a coffee, meet old friends and make new ones.See us on Facebook “Hub on the Hill”

The Hub on the Hill has become a thriving andactive place where people come to meet andenjoy themselves

Community Payback WorksIn recent weeks our Environment Officer; Chris Hallam has been co-ordinating a number of improvement works within the parish in relation to footpath cleansing and scrub clearance as well as leaf removal from areas that are no longer routinely carried out by the Local Authority. This type of work adds value to our neighbourhood and the environment in which we live at no cost but the benefits are clear to see. Over the coming months there will be more areas identified which will be targeted by the Probation Service in a bid to improve some of the more neglected areas. If you wish to bring to our attention any such areas in need of improvement please contact Chris on 567285.

Parish Environment TeamRecently Madeley Town Council has rolled out a new scheme of street furniture cleansing within our Parish. The new role which involves our own Parish Environment Team (PET) enables the power washing of street furniture which is mainly highway signs and street name-plates along with litter bins, bus stops and paved footways. However, there are other uses that we can look at if the need arises. The equipment was purchased with a view to topping up some of the lost services by the Borough Council and as we can see some of our street furniture can soon become untidy if moss/algae starts to build up. The PET team will be working their way around the parish over the coming months fitting it in with various other tasks that come their way.

John Muir AwardsOver the spring and summer months Madeley Town Council, along with Shropshire Wildlife Trust will be working together with year 5 pupils from the John Fletcher of Madeley School where they will be completing their John Muir award. The John Muir award is a nationally recognised environmental award and as part of this the pupils will explore and discover their local wild landscape which includes Madeley Local Nature Reserves (pit mounds), activities in Madeley Orchard working with our volunteers who help to maintain this wonderful place and also some clearance works within St Michael’s Churchyard where there are some historical head stones and tombs of people who were very influential in the building of Madeley. They will also visit Ironbridge and the River Severn, discovering the heritage of the area and also learning about the local wildlife as well as experiencing new skills in bush-craft. During these trips pupils will learn how nature has taken back what was industrial waste along with incorporating earth education and sensory activities for children to look, listen, feel and smell the wildlife of the nature reserves. These activities will continue throughout the summer months so the pupils will get to see just how these wildlife areas change from season to season and the different habitats that thrive in such woodland.

Road SweepingA road sweep was carried out of our estate roads - funded by Madeley Town Council; this was in response to the Borough Council cutting back on some of its former duties which was the sweeping of all kerb edged roads.

The Borough Council at present only sweep the main routes in and around our parish such as bus routes or gritting routes and main arterial routes in and out of the parish. This meant that there was no longer a street sweep inside our residential areas, so Madeley Town Council has funded the sweeping of our residential areas in a bid to remove all built up detritus which has accumulated within the base of the kerb, which not only looks untidy but does provide enough leaf waste for weeds to germinate and grow.

It also helps to keep our drains unblocked as there is less waste to wash into them after rainfall which ultimately can cause flooding if they become blocked. A second sweep will be programmed for the beginning of the new year when all leaves have fallen so ensuring value as 100% of leaf fall will be swept in one go.

Broad Meadow Lane, before Broad Meadow Lane, after

Twelve months ago Harold Taylor was blissfully unaware of a cancer raging within his prostate! Being fit and well with no symptoms at all Harold had no reason to believe he was at risk from this silent killer. However his wife Jackie’s brother had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and persuaded him to attend a free screening session organised by Ironbridge Lions & Ironbridge Rotary.

Harold had his blood sample taken by a professional phlebotomist and then went home to await the results. To his horror his result came back in the red showing that his PSA level was very high.

Then followed a series of hospital appointments, hormone treatment and finally a course of radiotherapy. Nearly a year went by then the news came that his cancer had been conquered with the consultant telling Harold that he just had to return to have his PSA level tested every 3 months to ensure he stays clear.

Jackie’s Brother meanwhile had lost his fight with prostate cancer so Jackie and Harold have been backing Ironbridge Lions second screening event at every opportunity. Several local radio appearances have featured Harold and Jackie urging all men over 50 to have their PSA level checked regularly.

The latest event at the Anstice in Madeley attracted over 700 men including BBC Shropshire’s breakfast presenter Eric Smith and the results have shown that 11% of the men tested had an abnormal level of PSA. Our retired consultant estimates that Ironbridge Lions has probably saved the lives of 50 men by early diagnosis and intervention.

The Town Council was notified on the 28th February 2018 that the revised bid for The Anstice had been rejected by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The indication was that our project did qualify for support and the heritage importance and strong community momentum behind the Anstice was highlighted. However, the HLF Committee had to take decisions on more projects than the available budget would allow and our application was therefore rejected due to insufficient funds.

The Town Council and ACT have agreed to explore what can be achieved with other sources of funding. Feasibility work is being carried out by Telford & Wrekin Council architects to examine what might be possible and options will then be discussed by members at their meeting in May.

A bid has already been submitted to meet the deadline for the Telford @ 50 CommunityBuilding fund which could secure a sizeable amount towards the project.

Look what you did...Following the ‘Bags of Help’ (blue token charity voting) in the Madeley Tesco store, thanks to all you lovely people we have received the third prize of £1,000! Well done you.

We also wish to say a really BIG THANK YOU to Pam Jones who held her 80th birthdayparty at the Anstice in April and donated all her birthday money towards the buildingsfuture refurbishment. What a star she is!

At the time of going to print we received over 1,900 Shropshire Star tokens in supportof the Anstice, so here’s hoping we’re in with a chance of a share of the £20,000!
