-Endeavour To Achieve- Week 5, Term 2 2017 The Boys soccer competitions continued this week with the Bill Turner Cup squad travelling to Braidwood and the Opens team travelling to Queanbeyan to take on Karabar. Our Bill Turner Cup boys continued their successful start in the knockout competition with a very impressive 5 – 2 win over the Braidwood Central School. After some missed opportunities early in the first half, the boys soon found the back of the net with a hat-trick from Julian Coppolino and goals from Tristan Pollard and Adam Cox, which gave them a 5 goal lead at half time. In the second half Mulwaree kept constant possession of the ball and maintained pressure on the Braidwood side. The home team did not give up, scoring two late goals and providing a positive finish to the game. The Opens team travelled to Karabar in the hope of continuing their success after beating Moss Vale 3 – 2. From the very beginning of the match it was evident that Karabar were a talented and worthy opponent. Mulwaree enthusiastically defended their goal and competed throughout the game. The final score was 8 – 0 in favour of Karabar, however this was not a true reflection of the way the Mulwaree side played. The side should be congratulated on their gallant effort and respectful representation of Mulwaree High School.

Week 5, Term 2 2017

The Boys soccer competitions continued this

week with the Bill Turner Cup squad travelling to

Braidwood and the Opens team travelling to

Queanbeyan to take on Karabar.

Our Bill Turner Cup boys continued their

successful start in the knockout competition with

a very impressive 5 – 2 win over the Braidwood

Central School. After some missed opportunities

early in the first half, the boys soon found the

back of the net with a hat-trick from Julian

Coppolino and goals from Tristan Pollard and

Adam Cox, which gave them a 5 goal lead at half

time. In the second half Mulwaree kept constant

possession of the ball and maintained pressure

on the Braidwood side. The home team did not

give up, scoring two late goals and providing a

positive finish to the game.

The Opens team travelled to Karabar in the hope

of continuing their success after beating Moss

Vale 3 – 2. From the very beginning of the match

it was evident that Karabar were a talented and

worthy opponent. Mulwaree enthusiastically

defended their goal and competed throughout the

game. The final score was 8 – 0 in favour of

Karabar, however this was not a true reflection of

the way the Mulwaree side played. The side

should be congratulated on their gallant effort and

respectful representation of Mulwaree

High School.

I am hearing great things about the new digital

newsletter. It is a fantastic looking addition to our

website. Congratulations to Mrs Curry for

developing the idea and Ms Gulson for making it

work.

More congratulations to Mr Stevenson and his

team for hosting the Zone Cross Country which

Mulwaree High School won for the 14th year. The

Year 12s made many $ with the fairy floss / BBQ

stall. Good luck to the big team going to Regional

Championships.

I ask that everyone, staff students and parents

show patience as far as money issues are

concerned. Mulwaree High School went live with

a new administration system, LMBR. It will be a

steep learning curve for everyone especially our

office staff. Funds will be able to be receipted as

of Monday.

We are in the middle of exams for all except Year

12 so study hard and aim high.

Congratulations to the students who have been

accepted into Senior and Junior State Music

Camps, 11 all together. A record I think and to

Madilynn Bayliss who was accepted into State

Dance Ensemble.

A reminder to all students; you must submit

assessment work on time. If you are late you

need to provide a medical certificate otherwise you

will receive no marks and an N-determination

warning letter. These are NESA rules not

Mulwaree High School rules.

Bon Voyage to Mr and Mrs Wilson who are

travelling to Russia. Have a great trip and see you

back next term.

Zone Cross Country

Perfect running conditions greeted all schools

upon their arrival for the 2017 Tablelands Cross

Country Championships. This year, we had over

450 competitors from 8 schools, who were

eager to knock Mulwaree from their winning

streak.

Once again, Mulwaree High School was the

overall winner this year on 443 points, with 8

teams winning their respective age groups. This

takes our winning run to 14 YEARS

STRAIGHT ! What a massive achievement by

our team.

This year, we will have Mulwaree Zone teams in

the 12’s, 14’s, 16’s, 18’s Girls and the 12’s,

14’s, 15’s, and 17’s Boys. We also have 12

individual runners heading off to Regional. This

is a huge effort from all of those runners.

Congratulations!

Unfortunately, our U/15’s Boy’s NSW All

Schools Champion team from last year was

beaten by ONE solitary point in the 16’s event.

However, 2 of those boys have made it through

to the next stage as individual runners.

Mulwaree had 4 students who finished in 1st

place in their event and were crowned Age

Champions. These students were:

Meg Baxter 12’s Girls

Mikayla Jones 13’s Girls

Annabel Croker 15’s Girls

Riley Cox-Barlow 13’s Boys

It was extremely pleasing to see these student’s

hard work pay off. Congratulations to you all on

such a fantastic achievement. Well done!!

I would like to pass on my special mention to our

students for their behaviour all day; which was

exemplary, and for their efforts in completing the

course in the quickest time possible.

A huge thank you must also go to my Yr 9, 11

and 12 student helpers, Mrs McClelland, Mr

Armstrong and Mr Dunn for their amazing

assistance and help on the day. THANKYOU so

very much !!!

Congratulations to our students who have

progressed to the Regional Carnival on Friday

2/6/2017 at Cambewarra. These students have

been given the required information. Please

advise the PE STAFF ASAP if any runners

are unable to compete or you require

another information sheet.

Congratulations to all of our competitors and

good luck to our regional runners. Thank you all

once again for your efforts this year!

Mr Stevenson

South Coast Basketball

On Tuesday 16th May Maddie Dodson, Elly

Hazelton and I went to Goulburn Basketball

Stadium to play in the South Coast team with a

great coach and an awesome team. We knew

we had a good chance of doing really well. Our

first game was very challenging as their side

was very competitive. Sydney West were

beating us by 15 points but with very good

sportsmanship our team came back and put the

game into extra time. The sportsmanship

continued for 3 days from 16th to 18th May and

although we didn’t win the competition we

worked very well as a team and it was a great

experience.

Year 12 Chemistry students from Mulwaree,

Crookwell, Yass, Young and Boorowa High

Schools participated in a cross school

assessment task. This task involved

measuring the water quality or chemicals in

the water at Mulwaree High School wetlands.

Students collected water from various

dams as well as sampling water from an

aquifer (ground water) that runs across

and under the school grounds. Students

then returned to the laboratories and

analysed the salt levels, pH, hardness

and other ions.

We were also grateful to have a

presentation from Goulburn Mulwaree

Council representatives on the treatment

and purification of Goulburn tap or

drinking water. Students were placed

into small teams to complete this work, and a

big shout out to the Mulwaree High School

students who showed responsibility and

leadership in assisting the students from the

other schools.

Have you been getting absence notes in roll call ?

Have you been returning them ?

Who do you see if they are wrong ?

These absences will be recorded on Semester 1 Reports as

either explained or unexplained.

Think about how that will look to universities/ employers

and others !

Resolve them today ! See Mrs Randall if you need

assistance.

The cut off for resolutions will be the end of Week 8.

Congratulations to Madilynn Bayliss of

Year 10 on her selection for the NSW

State Dance Ensemble. Madilynn will

perform at State Dance Festival and

the Schools Spectacular as part of this

ensemble.

Alan Tongue is back in town. This time he is

inspiring 40 Mulwaree High School students to

reach their full potential. The Aspire program

provides a unique opportunity for students to be

mentored by a Canberra Raiders great and an

inspirational leader.

The Aspire program aims to motivate students

to take control of their future. Students have

been challenged every week to reflect on their

personal goals and realise the commitment

required to achieve those goals. The first 3

weeks of the program has resulted in impressive

efforts and positive change within all students.

Each session is broken into two parts with the

students working through the theory component

in class and then working through a rigorous

practical component. After the first three weeks,

there has been nothing but positives from the

students. Participants have found the program

challenging, inspiring and most of all uplifting.

Ex Canberra Raiders captain Alan Tongue has

delivered programs in schools across the ACT

and southern NSW. His recognition as ACT’s

Australian of the year in 2016 is one of many

accolades Alan has received for his hard work

and dedication to young people in the area and

is indicative of the positive effect the program is

having on the community. Alan’s passion and

enthusiasm is contagious, people cannot help

but want to take on the message he is delivering

and promote it to others.

Workers Club board member Greg McAleer has

once again expressed his support for the

program and was impressed by what he saw

when he visited Mulwaree High school during

the Thursday session. The program is proudly

sponsored by the Goulburn Workers Club and

would not have

been possible

without their

continued

generous

financial

contribution. For

MUSEUM MUSEUM

REVERIEREVERIE

From the Friends of Mulwaree Museum (FOMM)

In our efforts to gather items relating to the Afghanistan

theatre of war, we have received a photo of Geoffrey Godkin.

Geoff was Captain at MHS in 2008. He graduated Royal

Military College, Canberra 2010; obtained his Masters Degree

in Business (NSW) 2016. The photo shows Geoffrey as a

Lieutenant as part of Mentoring Task Force 4 in Afghanistan

2012.

Geoffrey, on being promoted to Captain became the youngest to have achieved that honour in

the history of the Australian Army.

Other memorabilia received by the Museum: The Sydney Morning Herald of the 16th August

1945, with news of the Japanese surrender. Thank you Shirley and Naomi Corson. Where did

you find it? From Mr. Bob Stephens (Snr) a wooden display case with seven ‘Rising Sun’

badges depicting the evolution of the badge. From Major A. Sweatman- uniform and equipment

used in Iraq during his tour of duty over 2015 -2016.

New volunteer – Jason Cook has carved a plaque in honour of the 4th Australian Light Horse –

this is currently on display.

Amongst the visitors to the Remembrance Museum on ANZAC Day were children who attempted

the focus questions relating to the current exhibition. Their Certificates of Completion have been

forwarded to their schools (in Goulburn, Canberra and Sydney) for distribution.

It is always interesting to know what job

opportunities are available in and around

Goulburn. Reece Baker attended a quarry

visit with Ms Roberts and has reported on the

many jobs available in the local quarries.

Another interesting opportunity is the ANU

offering a new degree called Bachelor of

Health Science. The exciting aspect is, it

gives preference to students who are from a

rural area such as Goulburn. This degree

provides a direct track to study MEDICINE at

ANU. Previously, studying Medicine at ANU

was postgraduate only. This degree, starting

in 2018, needs: 1 ) an aptitude for Medicine

such as an interest or ability in Biology,

Chemistry or Physics, 2) the characteristics of

a “good doctor” a sense of belonging to a

community or a willingness to contribute to

rural areas and 3) an ATAR of at least 85.

This is a great opportunity please see Ms

Roberts or Dr Devery if interested.

Extractive Industries

On the 8th of May, 12 students from Mulwaree

High, Goulburn High and Trinity Catholic

College took part in an excursion to Marulan to

gain insight into the types of jobs the Mineral

Extraction Industry has to offer to students

during and after the HSC. The first stop we

made was at the Boral Peppertree Quarry,

which produces up to 3.5 million tonnes of

aggregate per year. Here we learned about the

importance of quarries such as these and the

types of roles the employees play to run the

site. Our second stop was at the Boral

Limestone mine in South Marulan. The

employees there shared their experiences with

getting a job with Boral. Our final stop was at

the Holcim Lynwood Quarry; here the

Environmental Officer explained the corporate

ladder of a multi-national mining company and

all the roles the employees play, from the CEO

of the company to the cleaners. She also went

into detail about all of the positions the Mineral

Extraction Industry offers, such as:

Engineers – civil, electrical, computer,

mechanical, environmental and geotechnical.

Managers – quarry manager, pit manager and

HR manager.

Administration and Finance – mine clerks,

accounts clerks, receptionist and accountant.

Supervisors – mill supervisors, pit

supervisors, warehouse supervisors and

safety officer.

Technicians and labourers – drillers,

blasters, heavy machinery operators, chemical

operators, mill operators, diggers and helpers.

Research and Development – lab

technicians, chemists, analysts,

environmentalists and geologists.

Other – water samplers, mineral samplers,

cleaners, assistants and apprentices.
