1 By Jeff Pfeil Embrace the start of fall with live entertainment, rides and, of course, those famous Ox Roast sandwiches. Yum! The 62nd annual West Jefferson Ox Roast, presented by the West Jefferson Community Association, returns to Garrette Park in West Jefferson, Ohio, this Labor Day weekend. We’ve put together some great new additions this year and improved upon the things our guests enjoy the most. For starters, our Ox Roast sandwiches will still be sold on Monday but we will start serving at Noon instead of the previously later 3 o’clock. This allows more folks to enjoy the sandwiches and keeps the event from running so late into the night. Sand- wich sales are slated to end by 6 p.m., with an auction for left over meat to begin at 7 p.m. The 6,000 pounds of round roast (shhh… it’s not actual ox) is seasoned with “Rudy’s Secret Reci- pe” before it’s wrapped and placed in the fire pit on the festival grounds for cooking overnight. All work is done by volunteers and by hand! Returning for 2012, our parade, themed “Pirates of the Seas,” will kick off the event at Noon on Saturday. A packed entertainment schedule, queens contests and the Jefferson Township Fire Department “Axes & Axles” car show will also be on tap during the Ox Roast. T Participants in this show get a discount on the Plain City Classic Car Cruise-In registration. As always, kids can get in on the fun too, with dozens of games and rides for all ages and skill levels. New this year will be a petting zoo and well as interactive science exhibits presented by COSI. Clowns, balloon twisters and face painting will also add to the fun. The West Jefferson Youth Athletic Association will be hosting their third annual Running of the Ox 5K Monday morning at West Jefferson High School. Plus, after all that running, join us for all the elephant ears, lemon shake-ups and other fair food you can eat while you witness your friends competing in both our ice cream and watermel- on eating contests. The West Jeff Ox Roast highlights our beautiful downtown area with great atmosphere, food and entertainment. This festival is a chance for people to get out and enjoy the start of fall, have an Ox Roast sandwich and listen to some great music. Dozens of businesses, non-profits and crafters will be on hand and much care is taken to ensure the profits stay local and we can sup- port Ohio’s economy. West Jefferson Ox Roast event info and a com- plete entertainment schedule as well as parade, vendor and visitor information are all online at westjeffoxroast.com and on Facebook. The West Jefferson Community Association, serv- ing the community since 1951, meets the second Thursday of each month in the community room of the Hurt-Battelle Memorial Library with a dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. Guests are always welcome to attend. The group also hosts a steak fry for members and families each August, a Senior Citizens Christmas Party, a Halloween costume contest and Christmas in the Park. Who we are: The Gateway Shoppes of West Jefferson is a retail store featuring 20+ vendors selling a variety of items including Amish jams and jellies, antiques, vintage collectibles, “previously loved items,” crafts, hypertufa pots and more.

What sets us apart from others: We have a nice, clean store with eight separate rooms to shop through, allowing customers to take their time and not feel crowded by other shoppers. We have been told we have great prices, nice variety and a pleasant atmosphere that always “smells good!” Our vendors have come together like a family and help and support each other in their individual endeavors. It makes The Gateway Shoppes a great business to be a part of. Who we serve: We have customers from Madison County, but we also have people from Hilliard, Powell, Delaware, Springfield, Dublin and Grove City. We do get “out of towners” who tell us they will definitely be back when they come through town again.

Madison Co. has cultivated our success: Madison County has been very supportive. With my past endeavors and involvement in the community, many folks were used to seeing me and knew what my mission in life has been. They knew that my efforts were not just self serving but helping my vendors make a place that they could be proud of. Madison Countians are great about spreading the word and we all

know the value of “word of mouth.” The Chamber of Commerce has cultivated our success: It would take up too much paper and to mention all of the things the Chamber has helped me with. From working out details with my landlord, helping with marketing and finding vendors and I know that the staff of the Chamber is just a phone call, email or text away from helping me solve any problems or just acting as a sounding board for my “crazy Marci ideas!” It goes without saying that The Gateway Shoppes would not be the success we are without their help.

Chamber installs two new board directorsThe Madison County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce Pat Closser and Pam Olson have joined the Chamber Board of Directors.

Recently, the board had two directors vacate their seats due to increased responsibilities in their careers.

Closser was voted by the remaining 18 board directors to assume a seat with two remaining years. The directors voted Olson into a seat with three remaining years.

Olson is a 21 year resident of London and is an agent for Farmers Insurance Group. She is also an entrepreneur who owned Dedden’s Window Cleaning, a 28 year old company based in Columbus, Ohio. She has been a very active volunteer and supporter of her Chamber of Commerce.

Closser is a London native and Wright State University graduate who owns Casey’s Carry-out. As President of the Downtown London Association and Vice-President/founding member of the London Community Organization, Closser has worked diligently with the Chamber to help improve London and especially historic downtown London.

He also currently serves as a London City Council person where he often represents the City of London with Madison County Future, Inc. Community Improvement Corporation.

“The board is excited to have two new highly qualified and skilled board directors join our already very strong board,” said Mike Boerger, President of the Board of Directors. “They are both tremendous supporters of their Chamber of Commerce and their community, and we look forward to having them join our efforts.”

No shortage of fun of The Orchard and Company’s Scarecrow Festival

Mad About People Madison Monthly September 2012 Vol. 1, Issue 6

By Megan Greve

Although the orchards at The Orchard and Company are only open to a public a short time each year, those few weeks are certainly bustling.

The Orchard and Company, located at 7255 US Highway 42 North in Plain City, Ohio, boasts not only rows and rows of “U-Pick” apple trees, where families can come and get the freshest fruit possible, but a myriad of other activities as well during their August to October season.

These activities are capped off this year by the Third annual Scarecrow Festival, which kicks of Sept. 22 and runs every weekend from then until the end of October.

“We wanted to do something for families,” explained Kacie Winn at the Orchard and Company, on the beginnings of the festival, and no matter what the type of family, there is certainly something for everyone.

Although there are plenty of activities that one would expect to see on a farm – playing in a hay barn, meeting furry friends like goats and ponies, hayrides – there are also some events that are not so commonplace, or are unique spins on the expected. For example, The Orchard and Company offers a corn pit for children to dig and construct in, tire climbs to traverse, a manmade river to race toy boats, a pedal car track for those with the need for speed and an attraction that seems to be picking up popularity

around the country: a zipline. The orchard also features a “jumping pillow” where children can burn some energy by hopping about on an inflatable vinyl, well, pillow. But the biggest event at the Scarecrow Festival, and the one from which the festivities derive their name, is the scarecrow display, where local businesses, organizations or families construct figures that raise funds for worthwhile causes.

“We accept 45 scarecrows that are created on behalf of a non-profit organization,” Winn explained in an email. “We display the scarecrows throughout our orchard, [and] our wagon rides take guests through the orchards to view the scarecrows. Each guest picks [his or her] favorite and casts a vote upon return from the wagon ride.” Once the votes are tallied, the philanthropic figurine with the most votes “wins” a $500 check, courtesy of The Orchard and Company, for the organization they were built to represent.

Winn said that not only do businesses participate in the creative spirit, but churches and even families as well, saying that last year a family’s scarecrow, supporting autism awareness, finished in the top three.

From hayrides to ziplines to tasting food at the Pigadeli Café and voting on some not-so-scary scarecrows, there is no shortage of activities for families at The Orchard and Company. In fact, the only thing that is limited is the amount of time this local nook is open.
