MADISON UMC REVIVAL
January 14—17
Dr. Bill Ury will be our revival preacher! He is the former Professor of Sys-
tematic Theology at Wesley Biblical Seminary. His Hour of Holiness podcast
(www.hoh.libsyn.com) just celebrated its twentieth anniversary. Dr. Ury re-
cently pastored in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and he and his wife Diane
are currently working for The Salvation Army.
Dr. Ury will preach at our morning services on January 14 and he will also
teach a combined adult Sunday School class that day at 9:30 a.m. in the Multi-
Purpose Room in our new Education Building. He will also be preaching on
Monday-Wednesday evenings, January 15-17, at 6:15 p.m. We will have a
nursery each evening for children four years old and under.
We will serve meals from 5:30-6:15 p.m. on Monday (soup and sandwiches)
and on Tuesday (Chick-fil-A). All meals (adult and children) will be $5.00.
Please note what days you will eat and how many meals need to be reserved
on the attendance pad this week or you can sign up on our website (http://
www.madisonumc.org/revivalmeals). We will have our regular Wednesday
evening supper, too, and you can sign up for that as you usually do.
Please make plans now to be with us for all of the revival services. This will also be a great opportunity to invite oth-
ers to come with you to church!
WESLEYAN COVENANT RENEWAL SERVICE (WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10)
On January 10, our adults will gather in the Sanctuary to participate in a covenant renewal service. In 1775, John
Wesley introduced a covenant service as an important part of spiritual life in the Methodist Societies. This renewal
service was a time for the Methodists to gather annually in a time of self-examination, reflection, and dedication,
wholly giving up themselves and renewing covenant with God. Repentance through confession and commitment was
a key focus of the service, demanding humility from those willing to submit themselves to the dynamic words stated
within the liturgy.
The covenant renewal service is a practice that continues in churches and Christian communities today, often near
the beginning of the new year. It has undergone many revisions and adaptations, but its purpose as an evocative cere-
mony of commitment to ongoing discipleship and Christ-like character has always remained intact. Please plan to be
with us for this special service on January 10 at 6:15 p.m.

KIDS MINISTRIES VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! We need 4 volunteers to team teach the 2nd Grade Sunday School beginning in January and ending in July 2018.
We also need two teachers for the 3rd & 4th Grade Girls Wednesday Night Class.
CREATED BY GOD IS JAN. 25-27, 2018
All 5th grade students & their parents are invited to
participate in an upcoming event called Created by
God. It is a study of human sexuality with a Chris-
tian foundation that was in fact written by Rev.
James H. Ritchie, Jr., a United Methodist minister
and Christian educator.
Registration is limited to 20 students on a first-
come-first-served basis; members/regular attendees
of Madison UMC will be given first priority.
This is a major time commitment on the part of parents, students, and volunteers, but the benefit is well worth the
investment. In addition to being provided in an arena where accurate information and proper terminology can be
gained and practiced, the students involved will better understand how their sexuality fits into God’s plan for human
relationships. Using a highly interactive approach to learning, Created by God is a lot of fun for everyone involved.
The schedule is as follows: Parents Thurs., Jan. 25, 6:00 -7:00 p.m.
Students Fri., Jan. 26, 5:30-9:00 p.m.
Sat., Jan. 26, 8:30a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Students & Parents Sat., Jan. 27, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
There is an $8.00 charge for the book. Checks can be made payable to Madison UMC. In order for your child to par-
ticipate, you or another caregiver must attend the Parents Session as well as the Students/Parents Session.
To register, email me for a registration form ([email protected]). The deadline for registration is Janu-
ary 17. After the 17th, registration will be open to non-church members. If you have any questions, feel free to call
me at the church office or send me an e-mail.
ARE YOU EXPECTING A NEW LITTLE ONE?
If you and your family are expecting a new baby, please let Ms. Renee
know. We would like to pray for you during this special time!

FOR THE PHILLIPS!
A Word from our Pastor
I just want to say a word of thanks to our church family and our staff. So many volunteers and our
staff have given much time and effort for our many Advent programs and worship services. I also
want to thank our Altar Guild for beautifully decorating our church and sanctuary throughout Ad-
vent. We were blessed to have 1,043 people attend the Chancel Choir Cantata and another 1,935
people attend our Christmas Eve services throughout that day! It is definitely an exciting time to be
a part of Madison UMC. Thank you!

Madison UMC is hosting "Disaster Response Training: Early Response Team" on January 27, 2018, from 9
a.m. - 5 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room.
The Mission of an Early Response Team is to provide a caring Christian presence in the aftermath of a disaster. This
team is neither a first response group of emergency workers nor a recovery rebuild or repair team; rather it fills a
specific need in the early days after a disaster to establish the presence of the church.
Registration is $40 and includes a manual, t-shirt, lunch, background check, and leader expenses. For ERT certifica-
tion, participants will need to attend the entire course. This training will have hands-on activities, it is recommended
that you dress comfortably in layers.
To register, visit www.mississippi-umc.org/ert, or email Diane Goolsby ([email protected]).
