To help you make the most of your vacation, Transat Holidays has arranged a varied program of exciting excursions.

This booklet contains information on some of the excursions available, as well as additional information on money matters, shopping and the like.

As we strive to offer the best possible value, we carefully monitor each excursion to ensure it meets our high standards. Therefore, we reserve the right to cancel any excursion which does not provide the utmost satisfaction and similarly we may also vary the itinerary or add new ones as they become available.

Food & drinkMeal times differ from those in Canada, except in some resort areas.

Lunch, which is the largest of the three meals, is served from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and dinner from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Nightclubs rarely get going before 2 a.m.

ShoppingStores usually open from 9:30 or 10 a.m. to 1:30 or 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 or 9 p.m. Most department stores are open all day. Stores close all day Sunday and some also close on Saturday afternoon.

TaxiSMinimum fare: 2.10 euros

The taxi service in Madrid operates three fares: Fare 1 applies weekdays between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.; Fare 2 applies on weekdays between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Fare 3 applies on weekends and legal holidays.

SubwayThe Madrid Metro is made up of sixteen lines and is the sixth longest in the world. Many of the newer stations are accessible to people with disabilities. The metro runs from 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.

bankSThe local currency is the Euro (€)

Banks are open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 or 9 a.m. to 1 or 2 pm and, in large cities, from 4 or 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. In smaller towns and during the summer, banks are closed on Saturday. It’s generally not a good idea to use banks located near monuments or tourist sites. ATMs can be found throughout Madrid.

TippingTips are not included on the bill. Although not obligatory, it is customary to leave 10% of the total.

Enjoy a sightseeing tour through the avenues, streets and squares of Madrid. Tour the densely built streets of the 17th century Austrian quarter, where the austere exteriors of its palaces contrast sharply with their luxurious interiors. Visit the splendid 18th century neo-classical architecture of the Royal Palace, the Sabatini and Campo del Moro gardens. In the orderly laid out streets of the newer quarters, see Madrid’s most modern and avant-garde works.

Visit El Escorial, a World Heritage Site and great basilica-church and monastery designed by architects Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera, and built between 1562 to 1584 to become the political centre of King Philip II’s empire. View the Valley of the Fallen, a memorial monument built to honour those who died during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.

Enter through the Arch of Cuchilleros, where typical Spanish tapas restaurants are located. Then, walk along Calle de la Sal until Calle de Mayor and enter the San Gines Chocolate Shop. From there, continue to Puerta del Sol and cross Calle Arenal to Plazza de Callao. After a panoramic sightseeing tour through Madrid’s illuminated city streets, enjoy a live flamenco performance at the 40 year-old traditional Tablao of Torres Bermejas restaurant, located in the heart of Madrid.

Get a unique view of Madrid aboard an open-top double-decker bus. Two different itineraries (75 minutes each) cover all of the city’s highlights from historical sites and monuments to the skyscrapers and cosmopolitan architecture of modern Madrid. Board an Ave high-speed train in tourist class and head to Cordoba in the morning. Visit the Aljama Mosque, one of the most emblematic constructions of Islamic art initiated by Abderraman in the 8th century and to which Gothic, Baroque and Plateresque elements were added in subsequent additions. Admire its fascinating architecture, beautiful doors, numerous columns, and surprising light and colour effects. Then, enjoy a walking tour of the Jewish Quarter. Start with a panoramic walking tour of Toledo. Enter the old quarters for a visit to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and see the facade of the Primate Cathedral, old Place of Justice and City Hall. Walk down the narrow streets of the old Jewish quarter to the Church of St.Tomé, where you will see The Burial of Count Orgaz, El Greco’s famous painting; the old Synagogue of Ste. Maria la Blanca, symbol of the coexistence of the “Three Cultures”; the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes; and the Victorio Macho Museum overlooking the Tagus River.

Begin your excursion with a panoramic walking tour during which you will visit the restored interior of the Alcazar of Toledo, an impressive fortified building located at the highest point of the city, housing the Spanish Army Museum and a large library. Continue to the old city to visit the extravagant Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo, considered by some to be Spain’s magnum opus of the Gothic style. Walk down the narrow streets of the old Jewish quarter to the Church of St.Tomé. Embark on a sightseeing bus tour around the outskirts.
