As we pass the halfway mark of Term 1, the school continues to be a hive of activity and learning. Last week I attended the Year 7 Camp for a night at Licola and enjoyed getting to know some of our new students. The camp was a great success over the three days in total, with students challenging themselves and building many new relationships with their peers and staff.
I’d like to welcome our new students and families, with nearly 20 new additions at the start of this year to our college community. It’s great hearing the various stories as to why each family has chosen our college, but a key is the great culture our students and staff collectively create on a daily basis.
Continuous Reporting Following a Year 7 pilot last year, we are currently rolling out our new ‘continuous reporting’ model across all subjects and year levels. Rather than students and parents receiving a once off report on learning each six months, teachers will report on student learning during each topic within a subject (about every 5-6 weeks).
There are two key drivers for this change. Firstly, we want to ensure our students receive feedback in a more timely manner that allows them to improve future learning; and secondly, to allow parents to engage regularly with their child’s learning progress.
This regular feedback can be accessed
via Compass, and I strongly encourage
all parents and students to install the
Compass App which gives quick
access at your fingertips. Login details
are available from our offices if
needed.
Phone Communication
If you’ve called the college in the last
fortnight, you will have noticed we’ve
upgraded our phone system.
To guide your calls, you can access:
Attendance – to report an absence or
bus related enquiries
Middle Years – any inquires for Years
7, 8 or 9, including general student
matters, camps or events, or
contacting coordinators.
Senior Years – any inquires for Year
10, VCE or VCAL as per above.
General Admin – Payment queries,
principal appointments, first aid or
enrolment changes, contractors and
external visitors.
We’ve added voicemail for all
teachers to make getting in touch
easier too, as they’re often teaching
during the day. We hope this all
makes it easier for families to connect
with our school, particularly on
matters of student learning.

Growth Mindset
This year our learning around Growth Mindset
continues to grow and become embedded in what we
do. Just in case you have forgotten: There are two
types of Mindset, ‘Fixed and Growth’. If you have a
‘Fixed Mindset’ you believe that qualities such as
intelligence and talent are things that you are born
with and that there is nothing much you can do to
change them. A ‘Fixed Mindset’ brings with it a lot of
negative thoughts and a lack of self-belief in all
aspects of learning. People with a ‘Fixed Mindset’ hate
being challenged for they fear failure.
On the other hand, a ‘Growth Mindset’, which we
often see associated with successful people, is a belief
that anyone can learn anything at any time and
develop talents in any area they choose to explore.
So how do we develop a Growth Mindset?
We need to use every opportunity as a learning
moment. For example…students / children and adults
pick up messages, behaviours, attitudes, skills and
knowledge from within the environments in which live
and work. Therefore the language that we use is
crucial in determining whether we reinforce a
‘Fixed or a Growth Mindset’.
Praise effort, as success comes from developing your
abilities, not ‘having’ those abilities. Anyone can
achieve anything if they are willing to put in lots of
effort and to practise on a regular basis…It is just like
riding a bike.
We all learned how to, but along the way we fell
off…We never gave up, instead we persisted and tried
over and over again…We eventually learnt how to
balance and at the same time push the pedals etc. Due
to the effort that we put in…we will never forget how
to ride a bike.
As part of our ongoing learning in the classroom
students learn about learning and how to develop a
range of skills, attitudes and knowledge to enable
them to succeed in whatever they wish to pursue.
Examples of this learning can be seen throughout our
classrooms. This fortnight I would like to highlight the
work that is being done within the Senior Study
Centre. Study sessions are being led by our Senior
Sub-School Leader - Lashay Tricker and VCE
Coordinator - Belinda Marshall. Within these sessions
students are being taught a range of strategies & tools
to assist them with their learning. This is being done
in a positive and supportive learning environment
where students are being encouraged to practise
these strategies and to take on learning challenges
without the fear of failure…With effort success will
follow.

Programs & Engagement
This year, all Year 9 students are undertaking
one lesson of CONNECT each week.
This subject aims to improve connection of our students to
each other, to school and to the local community. Students
will be working on social enterprise projects where they use
the DESIGN PROCESS to discover, refine and design
solutions to problems in our community. Along the way,
they will be learning and refining their enterprise skills such
as teamwork, critical and creative thinking and problem
solving.
So far this term, students have completed tasks involving:
Empathy
Character strengths analysis
Resilience
Managing stress
Mindfulness
This week Year 9 students were fortunate enough to hear from some local social enterprise heroes.
Guest speakers, Joel Dinsdale and David Kelly attended
Maffra SC to speak about their lives and causes, and
inspired the Year 9s to dream big. Joel, a former student and
personal trainer, raised over $32,000 for local cancer
sufferers and their families by auctioning his own time to
people. David, a business owner and Gippsland local, raised
over $70,000 to support his daughter, Ivy, who was born
with a brain defect. In 2013, he ran over 100 kilometers,
battling physical and mental anguish, for over 17 hours. His
story of pain and perseverance left our Year 9s feeling
inspired.
Whilst students work on their own social enterprise projects
throughout the year, they will be participating in lessons
focusing on effective teams, expressing gratitude, forming
positive relationships and goal setting. We hope that by the
end of the Connect program students:
gain transferable skills to prepare them for the
world of work,
feel connected to each other and the community
and
feel empowered to make a difference in their world.
If you have any questions with regards to Connect, have a
problem in the community you think our students can work
on, or would like to be involved in the program, please

TAFE absences- a reminder to
parents and guardians to advise the
school if your child is absent on
Thursday (TAFE) day. As it is a
scheduled educational day,
initially rolls are marked based on bus attendance
or if travelling directly to the Sale College, I am
advised by their TAFE personnel if an absence
occurs. If for any reason a student is transported
directly to the campus by a family member, then
the school should be advised prior to that
occurring.
Twenty Nine VCAL students and three staff enjoyed the
Adventure camp at Gelantipy last week. The students
challenged themselves over the three days- including
going without mobile technology!! - and proved to
themselves that they could overcome some of their
fears of height; dark, tight spaces and rapidly flowing
water! I would like to thank the students for the very
good behaviour and the parents for financially
supporting this academic outcome.

Alpine School Co-ordinator
The students that attended the School for Student
Leadership, Alpine Campus, in Term 4 2016 have returned
to Maffra SC in 2017 hoping to use their experiences to
further develop their skills in teamwork, leadership and
stress management. After an intensive 9 weeks living on
campus Steph Britton, Jake Giles, Craig Hellings, Sam Dwyer,
Lucy Capurso and Cassidy Stevens are keen to put what they
have learnt into practice. Over the next 6 months they will
be working on their CLP (Community Learning Project)
which is called “Aussie’s Vacation”. It involves fundraising
for Aussie Boyd and his family to spend a week in Tasmania.
The team aim to raise $6000 and will be undertaking a
number of fundraising events. They have already put a lot
of effort into this project while attending the Alpine School,
including organising 7 sponsors (Newry Hotel, Railway
Hotel, Brown-Wigg, Elders, Café Latitude, Hawthorn
Football Club, Geelong Football Club) and a Casual Dress
Day early this year.
These students should be congratulated on their
achievements so far and they hope you will encourage and
support them in making their project a success. Stay tuned
for further information on fundraising events coming up!

Students with Asthma: Just a reminder to parents with students who have asthma
that the Department of Education and Early Childhood
Development (DEECD) policy requires that every student
with asthma attending the school should have a written
Asthma Action Plan completed and signed by the child’s
medical practitioner, this plan will help your child to
participate fully in school activities safely. If your child has
an Asthma Action Plan could you please provide a copy to
the school?
We have emergency asthma first aid medication to be used
as a backup for when students may not have their own
puffer and spacer with them at the time, but ask that
Parents/Guardians ensure their children have an adequate
supply of appropriate asthma medication (including a
spacer).
It is vital that staff know what to do for your child in an
asthma emergency. With this in mind, it is
extremely important that we have an up to date asthma
action plan and current contact details for parents and
guardians. It is also very important that you provide the
school with a number of emergency contacts.
Student Medical Alert: A student in our school community is currently receiving
medical treatment which puts them at serious risk if they are
exposed to infectious illnesses, in particular: chicken-pox,
measles, mumps or shingles.
If your child is suspected of having one of these illnesses it
is very important that they do not attend school. It is also
important that while your child is unwell they remain at
home until they are no longer contagious.
If your child has chicken-pox, measles, mumps or
shingles or suspected of having an illness please contact
the school immediately.
As a school community we value your support in relation to
the wellbeing of all our students. Please don’t hesitate to
contact the school if you have any questions.

Art Department Preps for Maffra Mardi Gras
Year 10 Art Class – Studio10 has been working really hard
in preparation for the Art Departments entry in this year’s
Mardi Gras Parade. Students have been really focused on
the task, designing, collaborating, problem solving and
building and things are really starting to take shape! Textile
students have been working on bunting for our float as well
as costumes and the drama and music department will be
involved in performances as part of the float for the parade.
Our Art Captains will be overseeing the final stages of the
completing of our float entry and take part in the parade
leading their peers along the way.
Maffra Mardi Gras: 18th of March 2017 4-9pm
In 2016 we saw the Arts, both Visual and Performing grow
within our school. As a staff we are thrilled to see this growth
and want to further support and engage our students in
their Artistic pursuits.
To do this, we are seeking your support in 2017. We would
like to form an Arts Committee, consisting of Staff, Parents,
friends of the school and of course our 2017 Arts Captains.
We foresee this group meeting regularly throughout the
year to share ideas, connections and brainstorm how we can
build the profile of Arts in our school whilst helping our
students to engage with the wider Arts community in our
local area.
Already on our Arts calendar for 2017 is a float in the 2017
Maffra Mardi Gras, our School Musical a refreshed and
energised Art Show as well as several performance
opportunities throughout the year with the inclusion of
theatre studies back into our VCE program.
If you or anyone you know of who would be interested in
joining our MSC Arts Committee in 2017 please express
your interest or inquire via email to Fiona Ray:
We would greatly appreciate as much support as possible
and value the opportunity to work with you in building the
Arts Learning Area at Maffra Secondary College.

Year 8 Broadening Horizons Program
During Term 2 and Term 3, all year
8 students will be working on
projects with local businesses to
broaden their experiences and
understanding of the roles people
take in different careers. The
Broadening Horizons program
also aims to give our students an
opportunity to develop and
improve their 21st century employability skills, attitudes and
knowledge.
All year 8 students will be undertaking an investigation in
their science classes in teams and will be expected to
present their work at the Maffra Science Expo late in Term
3.
In this fourth year of the BH program, we are again fortunate
to continue our partnerships with Wellington Shire Council,
Department of Health and Human Services and Southern
Rural Water. We have formed new partnerships with Cervus
Equipment (John Deere) as well as Quantum Support
Services. Our students are fortunate enough to work with
mentors from these organisations as well as citizen mentors
and volunteers from the local community.
WE WANT YOU! Parents and friends……..If you work in local industry, small
business or the government sector and would like to be a
part of our program you can do so in the following ways:
- Become a mentor and work with our students in
small teams by coaching them through their
project
- Come and talk to our students about local careers
and the pathway you took to your current career
- Help organise a tour of your business of
workplace: we are looking for places to groups of
students to showcase the variety of careers in

Marieta Sears
School Nurse
Hello Everybody from Marieta in the Wellbeing Centre.
Below are some details of a terrific website for all sorts of
information that parents might find helpful to support their
teenager and themselves whilst their child is at school.
Introducing ReachOut.com/Parents When a parent recognises a teenager needs help, they’re
more likely to get it. That’s why ReachOut Australia – the
country’s leading online mental health organisation for
young people – has introduced a free new service to help
parents help teenagers.
Free and available 24/7 ReachOut.com/Parents provides
evidence-based practical support and tips that encourage
effective communication and relationships between parents
and young people aged 12–18 years, as well as easy-to-read
information on a range of mental health and wellbeing
issues.
The service features more than 140 fact sheets, stories,
practical tips and tools, and also provides access to an
online community forum so that parents can connect with
each other to share experiences in an anonymous,
supportive space.
Term 1 Back to school Starting a new school, changing classes, finding new friends
and meeting new teachers can be overwhelming for young
people as a new school-year begins. Friendships are
particularly important to teenagers for many reasons – from
having a support network to feeling a sense of belonging
and acceptance. As a parent, taking time to help your child
build and nurture strong friendships will alleviate some of
the difficulties faced during this period. Read more about
how you can help your teenager build positive friendships
through this time.

Positive Behaviour
Support (SWPBS) After our first team meeting of the year, we have looked
back at all the positive changes that SWPBS has made in our
school. For those of you unsure of what SWPBS actually is,
here is a very brief description.
SWPBS is a framework whereby students are taught the
positive behaviours which are required in the school, family
and work. They are acknowledged for their positive
behaviour and this in turn creates more positive behaviour.
Clear guidelines and consequences are consistently applied
for negative behaviour, where students are taught how to
turn their behaviour around. Data is used to pin point areas
of concern and to direct the action plan of the SWPBS team.
Attention is focused on creating and sustaining Tier 1
supports (universal), Tier 2 supports (targeted group), and
Tier 3 supports (individual) systems of support that improve
lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work,
recreation) for all children and youth by making targeted
behaviors less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired
behavior more functional.
Maffra Secondary College aims to create a safe and
respectful environment where the whole school community
is mindful of developing each individual’s social, emotional
and academic potential.
Here are just a few of the positive interventions already
making a difference at MSC:
Values of Respect, Learning, Community
and Environment are part of our everyday
language.
Student, staff and parent matrix (Please see
appendix) have been embedded in our
school community
Staff aim for 6-1 positives to negatives in
interactions with students
Explicitly teaching the positive behaviours
for the use of language, litter and
respectful relationships to name just a few.
Regular SWPBS meetings
Mix of parents, students and staff on the
team.
Acknowledgement of positive behavior via
posi-slips, morning teas, postcards and
Individual Excellence Awards (IEAs)
Changing some of the focus at
Presentation night to encompass and
acknowledge our school values.
A large range of tier 2 and 3 interventions
proactively targeting both social and
academic areas, such as girls talk, study
sessions and wellbeing referrals.
If you would like to know more about SWPBS or would be
interested in being on the team please feel free to contact
Emily Boyle or Cheryl Evans at the school on 51471790.
