Magazine analysis

Page 2: Magazine analysis

Date and price- The font is small and by using a small font the price is not as appealing to the audience. The price is 2.30£ which can tell the audience which social group the magazine is made for.

Masthead- The masthead is big and bold. The colours scheme is pink, black and white. Pink font is used to aim for the female gender.

Main cover line- In the subheading we get the name of the main model and a quote from her interview. Rihanna is popular among teenage girls, and the pink font appeals to teenage girls. The quote from her interview is in a white font, which I think the editor used in contrast to her black top.

Main image- The main picture on this cover is taken in a medium shot. The tip of the model is pink and her lips is pink as well. Again the pink appeals to the female gender. The blue shorts, the blue eye shadow and the blue bird gives us a bit of masculinity. It can give the audience that the model is a strong woman. An the way the model is posing is a bit masculine than how a “normal” female would be posing.

Sub Headline- This cover is a special cover. The word special is written in a bold font. The word catches the eye and it can make the audience feel special if they buy this special NME magazine.

Layout- This front cover is simple in a way, but at the same time the pop of colour makes the cover more interesting. The colour scheme is targeted towards females, but with the blue as well, the cover is a bit masculine as well.

Masthead- The masthead of this front cover is in a bold, red, serif font. The red colour is standing out from the background. By using this colour the masthead catches the audiences attention right away.

Main Image- The main image is a medium close up of Adele. Her hair is big, which appeals to the female gender. But her make up is simple, which appeals to how she is seen by the society. The colour scheme in the image is very neutral, which is in contrast to the masthead. The editors did this to emphasize the masthead, but at the same time to put the model in contrast to the masthead.

Date and price- The date and price gives the audience information on how old this magazine is and also which class the magazine is meant for.

Sub headline- The sub headline gives the audience an offer where it says that this issue is special. This entices the audience to by this magazine because it is special.

Main cover line- The main cover line is written in a big white font. The colour scheme of the whole front cover is white, red and the neutral colours that the model is wearing. The text tells the audience that Adele is a heartbreak superstar. This can give the audience an opinion about the superstar.

Layout: The layout of this front cover is simple and clean. This simple layout can reflect to Adele on the front cover. The sub headlines are in a way framing the right side of her face. By using this method, the sub headlines is easy to read and at the same time is a bit different.

Page 4: Magazine analysis

Price and date: Usually the font of the price and date is very small. It is small here as well. The company do not want the price to stand out as it is not as appealing to the audience.

Masthead: The mast head has one big letter, which is the name of the magazine. It is red and white which can appeal to the female gender, but at the same time red is more equal than pink. The red colour also matches her red hair. The quote under the masthead can appeal to everyone who wants to discover great music.

Main cover line: The colour scheme of the magazine is blue, white and red. The main cover line is in the colour white which stands out from her red hair. This will draw the audiences attention to the main cover line. The quote from the article appeals to people who are feeling alone. Those people would want to relate to Florence, since she is a celebrity.

Main image: The main image is Medium Close Up of Florence. Her face is framing the front cover. Her makeup is a bit different, her hands is placed in a different way, and her look is a bit different. This shows the audience that Florence is a bit different, and people can relate to her. Her skin is clean and perfect, which can show the audience how the magazine are as well.

Layout: The layout is placed in the edges of the image, just like her hair. The layout is quite simple, because of how her hair is framing the layout. The colour scheme which is used is in this cover is white, blue and red.

Plug: This plug stands out from from the background. It draws the attention to the audience, to really show that the magazine has a new column. This helps the magazine to sell even more.

Page 5: Magazine analysis

The HEADING is written in black and with. The Q logo is in the colour white and “Contents” is written in black. This is neutral colour but it is placed on top of a red banner. Red is used to draw the audiences immediate a focus on the magazine logo and “Contents” so the reader now what he/she is reading.

The MAIN IMAGE shows the audience who is in the main article of the magazine. It is a long shot of an artist. He is looking towards the rest of the magazine. The photographer placed the model this way to make the audience curious of what he is looking at, and they start looking through the magazine.

The LAYOUT of this contents page is shaped like a c, it is creating a frame for the MAIN IMAGE. The colour scheme is red, white and black. By using few colours the layout becomes simple.

The FONT that is used is not to big but not to small. This is probably to let the reader see what the text says, but at the same time the reader has to concentrate a bit to see what this copy of the magazine contains.

Page 6: Magazine analysis

The MAIN IMAGE is medium close up of the well known artist Adele. Her face is turned right, which leads the reader into the magazine. It works just like an arrow pointing in a directions which leads the reader into the magazine. Adele is also seems very pure and her make up is simple. This can make the audience relate to her in a different way than if she had a lot of make up on and showed more skin.

The HEADING is in black, white and red, which is the main colour scheme of the magazine. It is written in a bold and large font. This gives the audience a clear understanding of what they are reading.

The DATE gives the audience information again which date this magazine is from. And the WEBSITE ADRESS suggest that the audience should go to that website to get more information about the magazine and more interesting articles

The LAYOUT of this contents page is simple and the text is framing the main image. This gives the main image a nice frame. The layout is simple and it is simple for the audience to read. The different use of colours in the different textboxes makes this contents page a little bit more interesting. But at the same time it does not confuse the audience since the same colour scheme is used. It seems that Q magazine uses the framing as a template.

The magazine has indicated a little box where it tells the readers about what is in the magazine every month. This can help the magazine to gain new readers, because they can feel like the magazine is well established.

Page 7: Magazine analysis

The HEADING is written in a bold serif font. By placing the heading at the top the attention of the audience immediately drawn to the heading.

The MAIN IMAGE is not very big, but by putting it in the middle the first ting the audience notice. The model is looking directly in the camera, which does that the audience can relate to the model/artist.

In this advert, the magazine is promoting the magazine it self. It tells the readers about giving subscription as a Christmas gift. This makes the magazine look good, but it will also help the magazine financially.

The LAYOUT of the content page is not as clean as Q’s content page. But by placing the picture of the main interview in the middle, the attention from the readers is immediately to that interview. And often this interview can be quite interesting and people is often interested in especially that artist.

In addition to the big interviews and articles the magazine has also a little section with everything that is usually in the magazine. This is put there to keep everyone who has read the magazine a long time to still know that the magazine still contains the same things as it did before

Page 8: Magazine analysis

The DROP CAP draws the attention of the reader where the article starts, or where a paragraph is starting. Q magazine uses a large drop cap in the beginning of the article and a smaller in the beginning of a paragraph.

This arrow leads the readers to the continuing of the article. The small logo also reminds the reader that they are reading Q magazine.

The MAST HEAD is small, and then it does not draw as much attention as the drop cap in the beginning of the article. I think it is used such a small font to let the readers read about the artist and let them make an opinion about the artist them selves. Rather than let the mast head spoil everything.

The LAYOUT of this double page spread is simple. The colour scheme is black and white. And the colours on the picture is subtle and they are not standing out. The article is in two different column, which gives the double page a clean look.

The MAIN IMAGE is a close up of Lana Del Rey. She supports the male gaze because women who see this picture wants to bee like her. Her pose is very feminine and her nails and make up is done very feminine. The lighting is quite mysterious, which reflects to how Lana’s music is.

Page 9: Magazine analysis

The LAYOUT in this double page spread from Q magazine is quite different from the other once I have seen. The mast head is in a big font and it is red. This draws the readers attentions to this mast head. The article is divided into three columns. Which breaks the text up a bit and makes it easier to read. By putting the picture on one side and the article on the other lets the readers of the magazine focus on the article without distraction.

The MAIN IMAGE is a medium shot of the famous country singer Dolly Parton. The colours she is wearing is very bright and feminine. She is wearing a long sleeve shirt, but it has a deep cleavage, so this picture is appealing to the Male Gaze. Because women want to be as feminine as Dolly Parton.

This DROP CAP marks where the article starts. Q magazine have chosen to use a white font with a red border surrounding it. This is probably chosen because red, white and black is the colour scheme of this double spread page.

The MAIN HEAD is written in a big and red font. It is not bold. They have used this to make the main head to make it stand out from the rest of the article and let it be the first thing the readers notices.

Page 10: Magazine analysis

This MAIN IMAGE is a medium shot. Everyone is looking directly into the camera which makes the reader connect with the models at once. The colours that are used in this main image is very neutral and brownish. This creates a vintage look over it all. The colours can also reflect on how this band is. It can show the audience that this band is not a band which are playing pop music, but that the band Is playing more old style music.

The MAIN HEAD is in a big, bold and dark blue colour. It is used the same colour as two of the members in the photo. This is probably to link the text and the image together. There is a lighter blue line which is put trough the first letter. It is almost like an arrow which is pointed at the band. This creates a link between the headline and the image.

The LAYOUT of this double page spread is different than the once I have ben looking at before. The image is not on one side, but is also one third of the next page. And the last two thirds is two columns. The layout is very simple and clean. It is put in some items all around the pages, most of them are drawn to the image to make the readers look at the image.
