Magazine evaluation How the aims of the production have been met When I began the magazine project, I wrote out a proposal of everything I proposed to do for my magazine. Based on my proposal, I have achieved what I set out to do, although a few changes were made along the way. My magazine is called Silverscreen; it is a film magazine that is targeted at 16-20 year olds. One of the big differences from my proposal to my actual front cover was the competitions. On my proposal I originally wrote that I would do a competition to win 4 tickets to Universal studios in Florida and special red carpet premiere of the new Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn part 2. I changed this idea so the competition was to win a trip to Hollywood. I did this because I believed my target audience would appreciate this more, as it is more suitable for their ages. How the magazine applies appropriate codes and conventions and uses appropriate media language My magazine uses the conventions of a real magazine because it includes a front cover, a contents page and articles (my double page spread). The front cover of my magazine follows the convention of a real magazine; it does this by having a masthead, main image and sell lines. The front cover highlights that this month’s issue is horror themed; it does this by using the colour red which has connotations of blood, fear and anger! The main image is quite a frightening picture, because the model is wearing black lipstick. Black has connotations of death and mystery, so this also expresses the horror theme. The contents page uses the conventions of media as the pages are in sections, it uses page numbers that are in a different colour to the page name. The use of new media in my magazine is a way of promotion, as it is a way the target audience can view my magazine in a variety of ways, this will lead to a wider target audience. My articles are put in to columns; the questions are short but the answers are quite long and in a different colour to the question. The use of the image on the bottom left of my article is trying to show the innocence and normality of my model. This is shown by the high angle shot of my model. My magazine is similar to the Empire issue I analysed based on the contents page as it has similar subheadings such as Regulars. Although, the layout is different to the one I

Although, the layout is different to the one I analysed, as the one I analysed has a collage of photos spread on two pages, and the one I made is on one page in a neat orderly manner. The double page spread of the magazine I analysed isn’t in the form of an interview and the photo is full bleed on the page, which is different to mine because I have wrote an interview based on my model, and the photos are not full bleed and don’t take up the entire page. The front cover of the Empire magazine I analysed only has two sell lines and it is quite messy. Differently, my magazine has many sell lines for lots of different films and it is really organised and neat.
How the magazine represents people, places or eventsI have represented my model to be a role model and an inspiration for young teenage girls everywhere, although, in the article she is shown to be an ordinary girl and very positive in life. The pictures I have chosen for the double page spread help prove that she is quite ordinary and she is still down to earth, this is shown by the fact that she is wearing normal everyday clothes that although are quite stylish, anyone could wear. Her body language highlights that she is quite calm and relaxed and her facial expressions hint that she has quite a friendly personality and she is approachable. The hair and makeup on my model is
not excessive or over the top which represents her as herself, showing and proving the article that I have written about her to be true.
How the magazine would be distributedI have decided that this magazine will be distributed monthly. Also, the target audience can find Silverscreen magazine by the use social media such as twitter and facebook. The use of social media indicates that the magazine is quite new and will attract the audience. To attract an audience, I would use promotions such as monthly subscriptions of the magazine; this would be a promotion as there would be discounts on the magazine for the longer you do the subscription. I would choose Bauer media to be my publishing distributor, because they are a worldwide company and my magazine is to be sold worldwide. Also, Bauer Media distribute another film magazine called Empire, so they would know how to market towards the necessary audience they’re selling to.
What regulations and controls might be applied to the product and how these have been taken into considerationMy magazine is going to have a monthly column called ‘Letters to the editor’ which will be letters from the audience, who will say everything good about the magazine and what needs improving, so it would have their view of what should or shouldn’t be on the magazine, which will keep them happy. I would not use taboo or offensive without starring it out which will not cause offense towards the public or the model. None of the images will be offensive or explicit which will also not cause offense to the audience or the model.
The strengths and weaknesses of the product in terms of meeting the needs of its audience.In the magazine that I have created, I believe that my strengths are the exceptional quality of my pictures and the creativity of the layout. I think I have used the uses and gratifications theory very well, as I have thought about the information that my magazine has provided very well, in the news, reviews and previews. The use of giving out a lot of information also helps the reader form personal relationships with other people who are interested in mainstream blockbuster movies. I believe my target audience would feel that my magazine is ideally what they would like to read, to prove this; I have got feedback from different people. They said:
“The front cover is unique because it isn’t a usual posed photos, it’s got different makeup which will interest the audience.”
“It looks very successful and professional! The front cover interests the audience to read the magazine as it looks enjoyable and interesting”
“I think your magazine is extremely successful in following the codes and conventions of a horror theme magazine and follows the Uses and Gratifications theory very well, it does this by the fact it is very informative and entertaining.”
