STUDENT LIFE As well as taking a look a what has been going on at the Academy we also want to get to
know a little more about our students so we thought we would head down to the ITV studios to
speak to one of our apprentices Emily Thornton. Emily is the make-up and hair stylist on the set
of Emmerdale and is doing her level 3 in hairdressing with us.
Hi Emily, Thanks for letting us pop in and see you today! So, how long have
you been hairdressing for?
Hi Anneka, no problem. I‟ve been hairdressing for 10 years now. I was a
Saturday girl whilst I was at school and then as soon as I left school I went
straight into an apprenticeship working in a salon and attending college
one day a week.
What made you want to go into hairdressing?
Well I always wanted to work in TV or session/photographic work so I went
straight into doing my apprenticeship from school as I thought this would be
a good stepping stone into the industry.
A lot of people think hairdressers just work in salons but it sounds as though
you always had in mind you wanted to work in TV?
Yeah, I knew that‟s where I ultimately wanted to end up. I was going to go
straight into media once I qualified (from my apprenticeship) but I decided
to stay in a salon for a couple of years to get as much experience behind
me as possible before I went into TV.
What made you want to come to LAFHAB to complete your NVQ level 3 apprenticeship?
It‟s the only training centre I found I can go to and still work because they are so flexible on what hours and
days you can attend. With other colleges I looked at it wouldn't have worked as I wouldn't be able to have
one day off a week from work to attend so their flexibility is great! It is a good location too as it‟s in the
centre of Leeds and the Emmerdale studios are also located in Leeds.
F A C T F I L E ! We have 15 apprentices registered at LAFHAB
We have 7 salons in Leeds who send their apprentices to us
4 of our apprentices are barbers
We would like to congratulate Alexandra Gould aka Lexi from Hob Salons on
becoming our first apprentice to complete their NVQ Level 2 apprenticeship

So, what’s a normal day like working as a hair stylist at Emmerdale?
We start early! And its normally a 13 hour day. Start around 7am and make the actors up, I then go on set and
watch them on a monitor whilst they are filming. We have to keep continuity and make sure they look how they are
suppose to for the script so us being on set means we can fix their hair as and when it needs it. At lunch time we do
checks as they might have changes throughout the day for different scenes.
So it’s a very on the go job?!
Yes! Your normally working until 7/8pm so it‟s a long day.
And finally...What’s the best thing about your job?
Oh gosh, there‟s loads of things! Eeerm...I get to meet some really interesting characters and I love the
creativity that goes with the job, having to change peoples appearances to go along side story lines. I like working
on location too as it brings with it a new set of challenges having to think about the elements which can sometimes
be quite difficult but then when you see it on screen it is really satisfying!
It sounds like you have a lot of fun! Well we shall be watching and keeping up with your work (and the
storylines)!

Same smoothing power, new limited edition design- our favourite steam-powered styling tool
Steampod just got its very own make-over. With its hot pink exterior and limited edition packaging,
the NEW Diamond Attraction Steampod will look perfect on any dressing table. The continuous
steam pressure of this unique tool, combined with its anodized ceramic plates, straightens and
smooth's the hair to leave it feeling smooth and looking glossy. And, what’s more when used in
conjunction with the smoothing creams, you can enjoy an anti-frizz smoothing effect that lasts up to
three days.*
*Instrumental test. Smoothing cream for normal to slightly sensitive hair.
This season‟s apricot-meets-copper
colour, a twist on Venetian blonde, brings
richness and vibrancy. “It‟s a very precise
shade, so it‟s about finding the perfect
balance between the colour at the roots
and that of the lengths. The final look
must be rich, truly natural and full of light.” – Frederic Mennetrier, It Looks
colourist
This perfectly balanced combina-
tion of icy blonde and silver high-
lights catches the eye and really
brightens the complexion. „‟Silver
blonde is truly one of the colours I
had wanted to create for a long
time since it has been a while since blonde has been so pure
and frosty.‟‟ Frederic Mennetrier,
It Looks
colourist
The bob is nearly everywhere this season,
and what makes this even more contem-
porary is the graphic shape combined with
a cool, icy shade of brown. „‟The fall cat-
walks delivered a slew of wet looks, creat-
ing the illusion that the models‟ hair was
darker and icier than it was. I wanted to recreate this effect using hair colour.‟‟ -

We popped into HOB Salons Leeds to have
a chat with new franchisee Shabaz Hussain
Hi Shabaz, as the new owner of the Leeds franchise we thought we would come and have chat and find out a bit more about Shabaz! So,
how long have you been hairdressing for?
Hi Anneka, oooh I’ve been hairdressing now for thirteen and a half years.
So did you go into it straight from school?
Yes, I sort of fell into it, my mums best friend was General Manager at Vidal Sassoon and that’s how I initially got involved in hairdressing. I
started off helping out as a weekend assistant and found that really interesting so went onto my apprenticeship from there. I did my NVQ
level 2 and 3 at Vidal Sassoon and worked my way up from there.
From working in the salon at the weekend what was it that made you want to do your apprenticeship?
It’s basically what people do with clients, making them feel great about themselves. How creative you can be,
creating an image for somebody.
HOB Salons is now a franchise, what was it that made you want to get involved with HOB Salons?
I used to be the number two to the General Manager at Vidal Sassoon and so used to look after running the outer
London Salons and was Creative Director for the company, once I left there it was to use the experience I had and do it for myself. HOB
Salons is a brand that has been around for 30 years but its still pushing itself forward into the industry, so it was a great opportunity to get
involved and build up the northern expansion of the brand.
You really have worked your way up haven't you! You employ a number of apprentices in your salon, what is it you find an advantage/
like about having apprentices?
I think mainly they are the future of your brand, they are what’s going to be on your shop floor in five years time, they are the hairdressers
of tomorrow. Its about getting people in at a younger age and building that foundation of training and then creating them into the best
hairdressers they can be.
It must be nice seeing them coming in from day one?
Yes, its nice to see them come in from day one and watch their career build up, which is great.
We (LAFHAB) are your training provider so we wanted to
know if you had some feedback for us?!
LAFHAB work with us, they provide the training and the
paper work for the NVQ which is great. We work together
and I get a lot of feedback on the
apprentices whilst their in college and that then helps me
put their training together in the salon. SO the fact we
work together is great.
Well that’s good to hear! Thanks for your time today its
been great chatting to you.

LAFHAB RECRUITING SERVICES
Here at LAFHAB we know how stressful it can be looking for new staff. From having
to manage adverts, go through CV’s and applications and arrange interviews, then
when you have finally gone through all of that and your candidate turns up for a trade
test and they leave a lot to be desired!
For salon and barber shop owners with an LS postcode we are offering to advertise
your vacancies. We will vet, pre interview and trade test applicants on your behalf.
All you will need to do is send us the information about the vacancy you have and we
will put adverts onto Gumtree, the job centre website and our Facebook and Twitter
pages. We will then invite candidates in for a preliminary interview and trade test if
we think they are suitable we will then put them forward to arrange an interview with
yourself.
If you would like to advertise a vacancy or would like any more information
then please contact us on 0113 245 7439 or contact [email protected]
After years of having their own salon and recruiting staff the owners here
at LAFHAB have decided to set up a FREE recruiting service to make sure
the candidates that you interview are suitable for the job. It happens all to
often that people are applying for jobs and turning up for interviews without
the necessary skills and qualifications.

The Hairdressing Council continues to campaign tirelessly on behalf of the hairdressing industry for mandatory
registration. This in turn would raise standards and raise the perception of our wonderful industry. Those who
are not involved in the industry don’t understand what’s involved in being a hairdresser or barber and simply
see it as an unregulated industry where anyone can work without training.
We are excited to say that the industry and the government are listening to what we have to say. A recent
meeting at Downing Street with the Prime Minister’s advisor proved the Government are beginning to get the
message. All industry organizations have pledged their support and many of the big names in the industry are
also behind us. More Salons are registering all their staff and more colleges and training centres are speaking
to their learners about registration than ever before.
We need more hairdressers and barbers to register and to find out the benefits of being an ‘SRH’ please visit
www.haircouncil.org.uk. We hope to welcome you in the near future.

J o h n P e e r s
John trained at Pierre Alexandre International Manchester and went on to successfully manage his own salon in
Rochdale for the last 25 years.
Throughout his career John has won many prestigious awards such as British Hairdresser of the Year (1990 and
1991) and most recently Rochdale Town Centre Business Awards (2012) for Best Customer Service Provider and
Best Long Serving Business.
John's motto is and always has been 'to make all of my clients look and feel fantastic'
Recent Celebrity Clients include Sven Goran Eriksson, Roberto Mancini, Pablo Zabaleta, Aleksander Kolarov,
Javier Garrido, Kasper Schmeichal, Gerry Taggart and Paul Dickov. Female celebrity clients include Agyness
Deyn, Anna Friel, Debbie Moore - Pineapple Dance Studios, and Mary Portas. In 2001 John had a star part in the
film Blow Dry and worked alongside Alan Rickman, Josh Hartnett, Bill Nighy, Warren Clarke, Peter Kay and Heidi
Klum. Not forgetting the amazing Take That too!
After 25 years working in his Rochdale salon he decided at the very young age of 60 that he ‘needed something
different to keep his enthusiasm and passion for his craft’ so he is now mentoring and motivating hairdressers
personally by visiting hair salons and sharing his knowledge, techniques and very strong philosophies on
motivation and technical knowhow. He is still massively into high end customer care and top notch salon service.
John Peers is a multi-award winning Hairdresser with 45 years experience within the hairdressing industry.
Here at LAFHAB we have been lucky enough to have struck up a friendship with John and he has become a
mentor to the academy. From January 2014 John will be running seminars at LAFHAB.
The first seminar to be run will be….

The Customer is KING
As well as being an award winning hairdresser, mentor and motivational speaker John also writes.
This article is a sneak peak into the Customer is King seminar that will be taking place at LAFHAB
this year.
One of the most important aspects in any business is to get the service absolutely right. Call it
customer care, call it customer service, I think that whatever guise it goes under, it is basic good
manners and putting yourself out for others. I also firmly believe that this must be an ongoing practice.
Over the years I have visited many salons providing trouble shooting seminars and can sometimes talk
to the salons for up to five hours. After communicating about how to look after clients, I always remind
the teams that when I have finished my seminar, it is their turn to start!
Good Service needs to go all the way through the company from Saturday helpers to all levels of
trainees, receptionists, junior stylists, senior stylists and management! Make a point of education and
training all staff from the very beginning of their employment.
We spend long hours training people how to cut, foil, perm and style etc, but not enough hours go into
training how the customer needs to constantly be treated. Many of us attend lots of seminars with
speakers like myself talking on the subject and we love it. We come out from the seminars all buzzed
up with good intentions but the very next day we don't respond anything like we should do.
I would advise that you go to as many seminars as possible, get buzzed up but for goodness sake, it is
hugely important that you go back to the salon the next day and make a difference.
The customers that complain in salons, restaurants, hotels, very rarely complain about their hair, their
food, or their room—95% of the time that a customer makes a complaint it is
about a member of staff.
Service equals a person besides a product-the product within our industry being the haircut! It is strange to think of a haircut as a
product, but if you are starting to think like myself, you will begin to realise the hair is only a millimetre of this product.
It’s the salon; the towel, the floor being swept, the toilet, the chairs, coffee, magazines, shampoo, the massage,
consultation, clean combs and brushes, sharp shiny mirrors-that’s just to start with, then there is you! Your manners, smile, teeth,
smell, clothes, behaviour, attitude, your interest in the clients, your whole demeanour that says , ‘’I like you, I’m going to make you
look fantastic and I’m going to make you feel great and I definitely want to see you again, and by the way I will be even better next
time.’’ that is the key to good effective service.
When I was a young stylist learning my trade, I loved it when the client said ’’John is a great hairdresser’’ but in this day and age, to
me that is not enough anymore! I like to hear people now say that ’’John Peers is a great pro’’ or ’’a superb operator’’. Get the picture
in your head of what and how you would like your clients to perceive you. Imagine what you must do to give clients a great time. Ask
clients when you finish their hair if they enjoyed themselves today? The answer is invaluable, especially if they say no!
I will tell you what I love to see when I am operating in a salon. It is the Italian restaurant syndrome– the smell is wow, the front of
house team member is a hyperactive eccentric, who is an expert on delivering atmosphere, is there to greet you, remembers your
name, flies around the restaurant like a supersonic bumble bee and who touches every flower, are you with me?
Its poetry in motion and I love it!
If you really get into this ‘Customer is King’ state of mind like I am, you will soon start to people watch like you’ve never people
watched before! Then you will start to study their body language and
before you know it, you will be a psychologist.
You’re probably thinking that I am joking but its true you will start to
study people and how they interact with other people. It really
sounds one sided and yes it is– if you play football its not your
performance that
matters, it’s the teams performance and the winning-not the taking
part. And by being one sided and thinking more about the client than
anything else you will soon start to see massive change i.e. you will
be busier, you will get a great reputation, and you will appear
stronger. But the most important thing in the world (no, not the
money) you will be so much happier. Yes that’s right, you are
suppose to be happy at work. So make the change and enjoy it.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
At LAFHAB we seek to enable Learners to avoid duplication of learning and assessment for the
purposes of awarding credit. This is achieved through „Recognition of Prior Learning‟.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the recognition of non-QCF certificated learning towards a full
unit or qualification. It is defined as: “A method of assessment (leading to the award of credit) that
considers whether a learner can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a
unit through knowledge, understanding or skills they already possess and do not need to develop
through a course of learning”
Regulatory arrangements for the Qualifications and Credit Framework (Ofqual/08/3726).
The implementation of RPL at LAFHAB prevents you from being repeatedly assessed for skills or
knowledge you already possess in hairdressing or barbering, therefore any previous achievements (eg
qualifications) or relevant experiences obtained through various environments (such as formal work in
the industry), are applicable for RPL consideration as long as the standards and requirements detailed
in the unit specification and assessment criteria are met.
Credit will be awarded once you have successfully demonstrated and evidenced to the tutor you
meet the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the unit. Therefore the use of RPL is acceptable
for accrediting a unit, units or whole qualification without you necessarily having to complete the full
course.
It is important to note that RPL is an alternative route to achievement, and should not be considered
an easy option or shortcut. Full evidence must be produced for RPL, which is subject to the same as-
sessment and quality assurance requirements & procedures as applied to evidence produced as part
of a QCF course.
Credit Transfer (QCF)
Credits achieved through courses on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF) may be transferred
from a relevant prior course.
Recognition of Prior Learning and/or Credit Transfer will be discussed at your initial interview, you will
need to bring all of your relevant certificates and other evidence of experience.
Continued Professional Development
The constant updating of skills is vital to success in any industry, this is particularly true in industries like
hair, beauty and nails.
Continued Professional Development (CPD) is about keeping up to date with the latest treatments,
products, techniques, equipment and business or industry developments.
If you are an Assessor or Verifier (IV/EV), CPD is compulsory, however it can be equally useful to anyone
looking to sustain or enhance their career in hairdressing.
In addition to full courses we offer training of individual units, so if you require accredited qualification in
any specific Hairdressing or Barbering units please see our Unit Accreditation options on our website

so each applicant will be individually assessed.
