Letter from the Minister

Well folks, once again we are faced with an end of year shortfall in our income – this time to the tune

of £22,000! There are several rea-

sons for this – lower offerings, rising costs, and the rise in our contributions

to the Church of Scotland in general. However, if we don’t meet the deficit this year, we will have to take a close look at those costs, especially the costs of our much valued paid staff.

How are we going to respond? At our last Kirk Session meeting,

we agreed that the answer is actually very simple, and can be found in the pages of the Bible itself. We could all try to . If we all did, then, given the size of our membership, Liberton Kirk’s financial problems would soon be a thing of the past.

What is a ? To is to give the first tenth of your income to God. This is a concept that first appears in the book of Genesis (14.17-20), and then re-appears throughout the Old Testament. In Jesus day was assumed to be a part of everyday life, so much so that the Pharisees are accused by Jesus of taking it to ridiculous ex-tremes (Luke 11.42).

is not a rule to be followed religiously, rather it is a way of under-standing life itself. When we tithe, here are some important things to bear in mind.

is an act of faith rather than one of calculation. It’s our way of saying we trust that the God, who has looked after us so far, will continue so to do

is not about giving to God, rather it is about giving back to God from all that he has al-ready given us

To is to give the ‘first fruits’ (see http://www.openbible.info/topics/first_fruits). In other words, to tithe is to give your first tenth to God, and only then to sit down and work out what you are going to do with the rest

is not limited to money, but includes the offering of our time and our talents

The Bible promises us that is a way of sharing in

God’s blessing (Proverbs 3.9-10; Malachi 3.10)

Here at Liberton, there is no doubt that if we all tried to , it would mean an end not just to this deficit, but to all future ones as well.

is a living demonstration of an authentic faith, and the sign of a

healthy church – attractive to those looking for

something real in a shallow and superficial world. Let me finish

with Jesus’ own words (Luke 6.37-8)

To tithe or not to tithe ?

Youth Report from Andy . . .

Two conversations on the way to school the other day really struck me. The first was with a 25 year old guy who used to play music with me at high school. He told me how he helps Christians Against Poverty in Central Church and asked me who I know there. Then two 8 year olds whizzed past me on their bikes, ask-

ing when I am next coming to visit them in Gracemount Primary School. Both conversations were over in a few seconds but what struck me is the importance of having served in our community for 14

years so far. To be known and trusted is a massive gift. We can’t underestimate its value as we serve people around us. When we are trusted people listen when we talk to them about the difference Jesus has made in our lives- and this goes beyond words. They see the change. I pray that more people long for that change too. How can we continue to be positively contagious in our community after 200 years? What harvest will these small acts of trusted giving bring to our friends and neighbours over the coming years that we remain in Liberton ? . . . from Lewis Brush . . .

I’ve been doing my school work experience with Andy for the week. I loved doing the sound for the Senior Citizens club on Thursday where it was great fun finding out how the technical stuff works. The people in the club were nice and friendly, and they talked to me, and shared their sweets with me! The songs were good too, even though they were old. Don’t be afraid to go along and have a good time! Cleaning out Andy’s office was also fun and I enjoyed being active. It was quite messy; but I’m proud that we got rid of so much junk, and helped others by moving furniture in Shankly the minibus for them. I liked helping with my school assemblies. It gave me a sense of what it’s like to be a visitor there. It was hard work making a big PowerPoint presentation of pictures that we took in Connections Group - of things that we are thankful for. There were over 50 slides! But I felt proud and had a great sense of achieve-ment when I saw the whole school watching it closely. My hard work paid off.

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your

lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Much love

. . . from Rachel . . .

It’s hard to believe that more than two years have gone by since I started as Children’s Worker at Liberton Kirk- time flies when you are having fun! This bicentenary year has made me realise anew what a lovely presence in the community, Liberton Kirk is, and I am so glad to be a part of it all. In Sunday Clubs, September started off with a fun Sunday BUZZ where we dramatised Jesus feeding 5,000 people, and ended with an unusual Harvest service. In addition to bringing food for local charities, the children brought a “harvest” of talent, with special music, props, and actions. It’s always interesting to get the young people up front and involved in a service; they bring smiles to many faces! Transformers has started back up in Gracemount Primary, and we had eleven very active pupils at our last club! It is so rewarding to build friendships with them and chat about their school experience, as we do various fun activities. I love the chance to go in for assemblies, P7 golden time, occasional classroom support for writing, and various other events. To add onto Andy’s comments, these invested hours somehow make such a difference to the children, and we never know how God might be reaching them through our involvement. Thanks for your prayers and support as we continue to do that! . . . and from Erin Johnston . . .

In January 2016 I am going to YWAM (Youth With A Mission) in Honolulu, Hawaii for six months. The first 12 weeks is all focusing on building and growing their relationship with God. Then we spend two and a half months on the outreach section sharing the love of Jesus in a variety of ways on a cross cultural missions trip. This could include trekking through villages preaching the gospel,

teaching English, volunteering at the “Mother Theresa Home for the Dying and Destitute”, preaching in local churches, taking care of widows and orphans, serving at a Christian coffee house, praying for the sick to be healed, working on clean water projects or helping re-build a community after a natural disaster.

I have raised roughly £2000 and have 6 people putting £10 into my bank monthly . . I have been to Belfast to get my visa, and I have bought my flights and health insurance, then all I need is £6000 for the training, flights and visa for outreach and living expenses. I would like to thank everyone for helping me get this far in fundraising by buying cakes and would love your prayers and for you to continue buying cakes. 3rd of October is the next date.

Edith Cavell was a British nurse in charge of a hospital in Belgium dur-ing the First World War. She saved the lives of soldiers from both sides and helped Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during the First World War, for which she was arrested. Her strong Christian beliefs led her to help all those who needed it: she said, "I can’t stop while there are lives to be saved." Despite international pleas for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. The night before her execution, she told the Revd. Gahan, the Anglican chaplain who gave her Holy Communion: "Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone." In the Anglican Church, 12th October is her commemoration day. This year Nurse Cavell is featured on a special £5 coin to mark the centenary of the war.

Church Organ Music for October

‘It is still true that the wealthier people are the most difficult to accept the teachings of Christ or to believe in Christ. While faith thrives in the poorer nations, the affluent West witnesses Christianity dwindle; and this challenging teaching of Christ, who tells the rich man to see everything, cannot be over-looked. Sometimes an intellectual struggle with scripture or belief can be a smokescreen for avoiding the financial implications of the call of discipleship. Yea, whilst we in a rich nation have more to be thankful for, we must set aside time in our flourishing lives to response to the word of Christ.’

Together Again . . . . . for our Future

th th

Over the summer, we have been reminded in each Order of Service that . Our busy, vibrant church enjoys good

support financially from our members in general, but as our costs rise from year to year, the level of our income is simply not keeping pace. It is falling short, as you will see from our Treasurer's Report [ see page 14, ED]

Our church offers so much to our members and to the community, thanks to our Ministry Team, our staff, Elders, organisations and the many volun-teers offering their time and talents. Of course, our giving matters too.

This is why we are asking you to focus on all of these things over the month of October, to consider your present level of giving, and then review your giving, using the Giving Form which accompanies this Magazine (also avail-able on The Welcome Desks). Then, at the beginning of November we can:

Now, a personal note on fasting.

The book, Humanifesto, a rough guide to the sermon on the mount, by Gerard Kelly, is the current reading in our House Group and it describes fast-ing in a way that I have never really understood before.

Fasting has Pedigree - As a spiritual discipline, fasting is probably the oldest and most proven companion to prayer. Christians have practised it for centuries, and many other faiths also do so. Because eating has so central and fundamental a role in human life, fasting touches us at a very deep level, in the commonness of our humanity.

Fasting Works - There can be no doubt that fasting works, properly (and carefully) practised, it has significant benefits in the hidden life of prayer. It sharpens the focus of prayer and it clears the mind. It brings, very often, a heightened awareness of the presence and purposes of God. It opens new doors of creativity. Fasting is physical prayer – it is praying not with thoughts and words alone, but with the disposition of our bodies.

Perhaps throughout Friday 6th November, we can be ' together' as long as we are able, even in a minimal way, to fast and focus individually, with physi-cal and emotional prayer? All of these aspects of Prayer and Giving are per-sonal, yet they

Reaching Out

A brief introduction to the plans of the World Mission Team

for 2015-2016 session

2015-2016 should prove a busy year for our World Mission Team with an em-phasis on seeking greater involvement and understanding of our programme amongst the wider congregation. We are also reducing the number of our part-nerships for the forthcoming year in order to concentrate on a few where we feel we can achieve greater two way interaction. Foremost will be our twinning link with Canning Garden Methodist Church in Ipoh, Malaysia. We already share monthly prayer concerns and have conducted live internet discussions between counterpart church leaders on cell group ministry and youth work. During the 2015-2016 session, we hope to develop this further in respect of youth work and in regard to our respective programmes with older adults. We also want to start planning for exchange visits. On our side, this will hopefully involve a possible all-age group visiting Ipoh next summer and as well as seeing some of CGMC’s local work, possibly participating in their annual one week mission trip to either Cambodia, Vietnam or Myanmar. We would also like to work on making our Mission Sunday in June a joint experience for both churches. With the Waldensian Church we hope to strengthen our link with particular interest in their project with migrants. With Watoto, we want to pursue the possibility of work visits to Uganda for any interested parties after the success-ful Choir visit in June of this year and we will wish to support the Sunday Club in their sponsorship scheme for one of the Watoto children. Also in regard to

Edinburgh South City Steppers

We are a small group of male and female walkers who walk together every Wednesday morning from 11am, usually for an average of 1½ hours. We walk mainly, but not exclusively in the south Edinburgh area and most of us are retired. We have 22 walks which we do in rotation, though walks can be added or changed. We are a self organising group and any involvement in the walks is entirely at the an individual’s own risk. The aim is to keep healthy by getting exercise but also to have some fun and enjoy the com-pany. If anyone is interested in joining us could they contact Marion Mullins, 44 Leadervale Road Tel 0131 664 3378 [email protected] and I will send you details of the walks and the walk programme.

supporting children, we will continue to support Purity at The Alliance School in Kikuyu, Kenya. We have two years further funding of school fees and accommodation fees to see Purity complete her education and hopefully then progress to study medicine. Still on the African continent, we will continue to give support to Kathleen Burns and her work with the African Inland Mission in respect of HIV/AIDS education and care. Kathleen’s letters have been an amazing testimony to her sterling work on the islands of Lake Victoria and we encourage members to pick up regular copies of her letters as they appear on the East Welcome Desk in the church. New letters are usually intimated in the Order of Service sheets. With regard to our links with international Christian charities, we plan to con-tinue our work for Christian Aid in organising the annual fundraising week in May, with Tearfund through the sale of Christmas cards and gifts in November and with the Church of Scotland HIV programme’s work in 17 countries through Souper Sunday in the early part of 2016. Finally, to bring all these activities more before the wider congregation we are planning visual displays on some of our work on some Sundays in church. We hope this will inform you more on our various partnerships and how you can take interest in developing them with us. As always, we welcome your feedback on any of our activities. We will also look forward to your support in the fund raising concerts and events we plan to organise over the year and we hope to-gether we can reach out in providing meaningful support to all our partners. Of course, if you would like to join the Team, please speak to us on how you can help. There is always space for new enthusiastic members! Sandy Hutchison, Convener, Liberton World Mission Team

Fresh Start

As you know, we recently started running services from our new base in Craigmillar. This has so far proven to be a very valued service for the local people and local area. However, to continue running these services we need your support. In particu-lar we are looking for volunteers to give some time to our Hit Squad service; a minimum of one day per month (Mon – Fri, 9.30am to 3pm) to help somebody paint their new home. You don’t need to be an expert painter, just enthusiastic about interacting with, and helping people in an informal, practical way. We are also looking for a few more volunteers for our cooking classes; a minimum of one afternoon per month (Mon & Wed between 1pm – 4pm) to support people to cook simple meals, and enjoy eating them together. Again, you don’t need to be an expert cook, but willing to help people in an informal and enjoyable social setting. If anybody is interested please do not hesitate to get in touch on 0131-476-7741 Additionally, if you have any upcoming social events, we would be more than happy to attend in order to share more information about our project. Treasurer's Report – January to July 2015

Shortfall (16,847)

The deficit at this point in the year compares badly to a surplus for the same period last year of £2,366. However the surplus in 2014 was due to the receipt of a one off 'catch-up' gift aid claim as a result of the change from manual to computerized recording of gift aided offerings. The situation therefore is one of an increasing shortfall between our income and expenditure. Judy Weston

As we move through the autumn months you are encouraged to take time each day and use the devotional guide overleaf – when we travel through

Jeremiah 1-33 – and a few Psalms - for most of the month.

Feed on God’s Word in the morning, at midday and in the evening. Pray with Him continually through your day.

Share with others the treasures or hurdles you discover. Let us commit together to pilgrimage with our God.

The Church website and Facebook page provide a fuller daily devotional. However it follows the pattern below which the information overleaf fits

into, based on the Kirk’s origins of the Celtic and Northumbrian traditions.

Plans to remove Liberton from Liberton ?

The Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland is reviewing ward boundaries for local elections and is consulting the public (YOU!) until 22nd October on boundary changes which it has developed in consultation with the Edinburgh Council. Presently, ward 16 (Liberton/Gilmerton) is roughly triangular, bordered on the South by the ring road, on the North East by Dalkeith Road (mainly) and on the West by the Braid Hills (that boundary runs by Liberton Tower and Meadowhead Farm). It is now proposed to cut out an area including Liberton High School, Liberton Northfield, Liberton Kirk and the houses between Kirk Brae and Liberton Tower. This area is to become part of Southside/Newington (ward 15) along with the houses at Double Hedges.

24 October : Encounter Egypt "The story of the persecuted church in Egypt is not only a story of brokenness and suffering, but also a story of victory. Not because we are heroes, but be-cause God is alive!" (Christian in Egypt) The last four years in Egypt have seen two revolutions and three presidents, and yet Christians continue to be opposed. Despite this, the church is growing every day. On 24 October at Encounter Egypt we are delighted to welcome an interna-tional speaker who will bring stories of hope and courage from our persecuted brothers and sisters in Egypt. Singer-songwriter, and director of Worship at CLAN Gathering, Allan McKinlay will lead us in a time of worship. The good news is that this is all free! There is no need to book. Just come and join us on Saturday 24 October at Trinity Church of the Nazarene, York Place, Perth, PH2 8EP at 7pm. In our 60th anniversary year, we want to thank you for your invaluable support, while looking forward to all that God is yet to do. 20 November : Secret Christians and Smuggled Hope It's not too late to book tickets to Secret Christians and Smuggled Hope! Join us for an inspiring and encouraging 60th anniversary celebration from 7.00pm on 20 November at Findlay Church in Glasgow. We are delighted to partner with New Scottish Arts to bring you an interpretation of God's Smuggler, which debuted with success at this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe. You will also have the opportunity to hear the incredible testimony of Yong Sook, a Christian ex-prisoner and refugee from North Korea. As we are led in a time of worship by New Scottish Arts, we will praise God for His faithfulness to the persecuted church over the last 60 years, while interceding for the work that has yet to be done. Fill your car, bring your friends - don't miss out! Tickets are £10, or £6 for under 21s. You can book on our website, https://partners.opendoorsuk.org; by calling the office on 01292 800 006, or by emailing [email protected]

You can see a map of the whole ward in the briefing note on the website of the Liberton and District Community Council, www.libertondistrict.org.uk or (on paper) in the Liberton Kirk Centre foyer.

The Boundary Commission has based this proposal on a ‘Natural Communi-ties’ geography devised by the Council, discarding the alternative of following Community Council boundaries. It is difficult to see what communality we have

with an area which is separated from us by the Braid Hills, Kings Buildings and the Cameron Toll shopping centre. Links that would be broken (for electoral and councillor represen-tation) include those between Liberton High School and part of its catchment area, and between the two Church of Scotland churches and their parishes. Liberton Hospital and Liberton Primary School would remain in ward 16. The proposal makes nonsense of the Community

Council area which would have to look to two sets of four councillors. The Liberton and District Community Council is putting together a response

to the consultation, suggesting an alternative boundary based on the local Community Council areas. It is looking for support.

The Boundary Commission has an excellent consultation site with maps and the full background at https://www.consultation.lgbc-scotland.gov.uk/node/12.

You may find it easier to look at the downloads on the Community Council website www.libertondistrict.org.uk, and there are paper copies of the basic consultation papers in the Liberton Kirk Centre. Electoral arrangements are a complex matter but telling points you could make include

i. that local ties would be broken, ii. that we have little affinity with Southside/Newington, iii. that the boundaries are not convincing (‘easily identifiable’), and iv. that the removal of the centre of Liberton to another ward would not

be conducive to efficient local government. You can express your views on the Commission’s consultation website

(above). Or you can simply write to The Local Government Boundary Commis-sion, Thistle House, 91 Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh, EH12 5HD by 22nd October.

Please help us to keep Liberton as Liberton. Peter Schwarz

Bicentenary Events

We are getting through our Bicentenary events, but there are still things to look forward to. We have two more – Iain Penman, who was our neighbour at KLM for some years, will be with us in October, and Maggie Lane, now at Kirkliston, will preach to us at the end of November. The August was amazing – so many people spread around the church halls and the garden! Thanks to Netta Rough and her team for organising it, and to all those who helped in so many ways with the entertainment and the hospitality. By the time this magazine is in print we will have had the at the end of September, and now we are looking forward to the in the Kirk on 24th October. There is still time to offer your talents for this to Calum, who is organising the programme, but if you don’t want to participate then please come along and enjoy the talent on display – and the refreshments too! Safe Families for children

This is the subject for an “Awareness Evening” to be held on th

One of the key focus areas in the Liberton/Gilmerton Local Community Plan developed by the Neighbourhood Partnership is to increase sup-

port to parents. Safe Families for Children Scotland is partnering with Bethany Christian Trust and the Council Team in Edinburgh South on this project, which aims to help vulnerable families, par-

ticularly at times of crisis. Sometimes families have no support network around them to help. Come along and hear about what sort of problems there are

in our area and what plans there are to provide support and help. This is a subject of interest to anyone who cares about children growing up today - please note the date and time. Ruth Davies (SEECAT Chairman)

We are often short of men – men who can sing please note - if you can read music, that’s even better! Ruth Davies, Tel. 664 3608

HOST UK — Room at the inn? The small charity HOST is seeking

friendly people who would like to learn more about other countries and cultures and share their home life with adult international students at UK universities. Young adults from many countries would love to have a short homely break and discover the real life of this country.

Visits can be for a day, weekend, or four days at Christmas. Offering a Christmas invitation to someone who would otherwise be alone on a Univer-sity campus can make a big difference. Invitations are urgently needed from volunteer hosts, no matter their age, or how far they live from a university. To find out more, or to be put in touch with your local organiser, please visit www.hostuk.org or call 020 7739 6292.

Northumbrian Celtic

Devotions - with Jeremiah! How is your daily walk with Jesus going? How is your daily devotional pilgrimage as we move into October? Do others note that you take time out with God? As part of the church’s bi-centenary celebra-tions, the monthly Bible readings have been taking a different slant. The church here at Liberton owes much to the Northumbrian Celtic tradition of Christianity and we are borrowing from that as we pilgrimage together through 2015 and onwards. The Celtic brand of Christianity has emphasis on monastery and mission, obedience to the Spirit’s prompting and a real sense of maintaining a continual devotion in daily living. Hence the importance of remembering Jesus and keeping in step with God the Spirit. However we are all prone to wander and disappoint Father God – therefore we need to ‘read the Bible and pray every day, and you’ll grow, grow, grow!’

For this reason we are encouraging each other to start, improve or continue a daily devotion with the Lord and His Word, and for October,

will be our main focus – have you ever read it? Jeremiah’s writings are not the most upbeat in the Bible – there are more tears and warnings than hugs and blessings for sure. However, in among the words

about sin and suffering are treasures – about God’s faithfulness and love to His wayward people. Poor Jeremiah labours for 40 years with hardly a rainbow in

sight…and yet from his sermons and prophecies we can learn so much about his God, our God, the LORD God of Judah and of Israel.

As well as (see the middle pages insert) to help us focus on the Bible passages, with relevant thoughts and prayers, there is

available on and on to enable us to take time in the morning, at midday and in the evening to cele-

brate, listen, pray and respond. And we all got a free bookmark/postcard to help us!
