The Scottish Episcopal Church is a self-governing province of the world-wide Anglican Communion. This is a family of over 70 million Christians in more than 160 countries. Our nearest relations are the Church of England, the Church in Wales and the Church of Ireland. Through the Porvoo agreement we are also in full communion with many other branches of the Church.

St Columba’s in Largs, is one of over 60 Episcopal congregations that work and worship within the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. We are part of Ayrshire Region and our neighbours include congregations in Ardrossan, Dalry, Irvine, Troon, Kilmarnock, Prestwick, Ayr and Maybole.

The area covered by St Columba’s includes Largs, Skelmorlie, Fairlie and West Kilbride and ecumenically we play a very active part in Largs Churches Together.

Dear Friends, !October sees us begin to head once more into autumn; a season that invites us to make preparations as the days shorten and winter beckons. It is a time when gardeners prune a bit, and tidy up, then retreat from the routine of spendings hours outdoors. For me it is a time for feeding the bees before their long period of confined semi-slumber in the hive.

Recalling Andy Murray’s achievement as Wimbledon tennis champion, and memories of the Rio Summer Olympics seem so long ago now - as do the sunny days of seeing a crowded esplanade at the Largs Viking Festival. Even our celebrating the brilliant silver winning paralympic victory of local girl Abby Kane itself will soon become a distant memory as winter comes. Yet, the positive joy of these can help sustain us.

For the Church, this autumn and winter far from seeing us retreat into nostalgia and look forward to nothing but hibernation, actually seems to have us spring to life and action.

Our hall is used more than it has been for a long time by many community groups, and our congregation has much to look forward to, and be involved in, this month and in the months to come, as we join together to achieve the goals set forth in this year’s Mission Action Plan.

As, at the Harvest Festival, we thank God for all his goodness shown in the fruits of creation; so may we also bear the fruits of the Spirit in our love and service of the world.

Yours in the faith,

Gordon

!Report from the Ayrshire Regional Council

!The Regional Council met at St Ninian’s church in Troon on the evening of Thursday, 8 September. The meeting was for the most part a talk from the Revd Prof David Jasper, who as guest speaker gave a talk on “The Christian Response to the Refugee Crisis”. !This was very much a lecture to challenge those assembled. A very emotive talk, Professor Jasper posed the scenario of returning home from a day out to find your home was no longer there. The home you knew and the services and support one is accustomed to, they are gone. What would you do? Where exactly where would you go? Making some very good points, he reminded us that both the ancient Israelites were displaced people - wandering for 40 years in the wilderness and that Jesus himself was born a refugee - having to take shelter in a stable and soon after flee with his parents to the safety of Egypt to escape Herod’s wrath. !He set the challenge of those assembled to return to their churches and to act, frustratingly he did not acknowledge the works that many of our congregations already do, both directly and indirectly. The role of Christian Aid and other charities was not mentioned as part of his talk. He did however make some excellent points. !In the short time remaining, a few congregations did share a little on what they had been doing with their Mission Action Plans, but general sharing of congregations was not possible due to lack of time and this would be shared electronically. !The Regional Council will next meet at the church of the Holy Trinity, Kilmarnock, at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 15 November when Bishop Gregor will speak to those present on marriage. !

Vestry Notes !The Vestry at their meeting on 6 September 2016 took the following decisions/actions: !Congregational Awayday to Rosslyn Chapel- It was noted that 28 members (two for coach only) would be attending the visit on 10 September. !Golden Anniversary of Ordination- The Rector reported that the Order of Service for 17 September at 12noon was with the printers and the Vestry approved the hall layout and catering arrangements. Eileen Binns will be asked to send Alec a card on behalf of the Church. !Note of MAP4 Review of 10 July 2016 – This was agreed as a correct record. !Draft MAP5- A Draft of the MAP5 proposals had been previously circulated by the Rector. The two strands we will be concentrating on are Welcome, Integration and Numerical Growth and Imaginative Outreach into the Community with the following Goals which had been drawn up by the MAP Group at a meeting with Liz O’Ryan, our Facilitator: • Update porch area/noticeboard and back of the church • Publish a new booklet giving a more contemporary look at our

effectively A list of actions with the names of persons to take them forward and a target date for completion were also detailed. Reports !Property- The following property matter were dealt with as shown: !Vestry/Organ Roof: The Vestry noted that work on this small roof was currently taking place by Breen Roofing and would also include a small amount of additional roof work following several recommendations made in the most recent Quinquennial Report including re-pointing of the east wall coping stones.

Electrical Works: It was noted that Andrew McIntyre (Electrician) has completed the following works in the Church Hall i.e. new hard wired smoke alarm fitted in entrance hall; new strip light fitted in church cupboard; emergency lighting system checked and faults rectified and compliance notice fitted inside the main fuse cupboard. Cables have also been earthed at the main light switch in the Church Office. !Memorial Garden: It was agreed to invite volunteers to form a small work party to clean up/prune the Memorial Garden on Saturday, 8 October from 10 am. !Photocopier and Telephone: Chris Evans advised that he was meeting with a representative of Digital Solutions on 8 September to identify possible savings on photocopying and telephone. He undertook to check the telephone bill and, if there are two numbers/rentals, to cancel the surplus one to the Church Office. !Rectory Ensuite Shower: Gordon Hodgson undertook to check why the shower fitting is not gripping.

Rectory Bathroom Window Frame: The window frame in the bathroom had dropped at one end due to wood rotting. Chris undertook to arrange a Joiner to make a repair.

Rectory Kitchen Works: The Rector will look to select a splashback for the kitchen and once fitted the kitchen will be painted white.

!Treasurer- Chris Evans had previously circulated reports on Receipts and Payments against the Budget for the year end to 31 August 2016 and on a proposed Budget for 2016/2017. He reported that we are down on our budgeted regular giving by some £7,500 and, although we have

a surplus on our charitable activities of £25,413, when bequests of £25,250 are taken out we have barely broken even. Our budgeted expenditure is down by some £5,900, which has helped to reduce the effect of a fall in regular giving, but work on the vestry/organ loft is under way which will have an impact on expenditure. !Our fund raising efforts were down because of reduced support at two of our car boot sales due to inclement weather. Cheques in the sum of £450 each would shortly be sent to our nominated charities - Who Cares Scotland and Calum’s Cabin. !Following discussion on the fall in regular giving, it was agreed to (i) conduct an increased giving campaign in 2017 and (ii) hold a Gift Day to tie in with the 140th Anniversary of the Church commemorations. !The Vestry approved the proposed budget for 2016-2017 as detailed in the Report. !Social/Fundraising- The Rector thanked everyone who had supported the car boot sales. It is proposed to hold a Murder Mystery evening on 28 October which would be a black tie event with tickets at £15. After hearing the Secretary who reported that the Vestry Awayday had set Yuletide for 10 December but the organiser (Vicky) was unavailable as was the Rector, it was agreed to change the date to 3rd December. !Congregational Matters- It was noted that Revd David Stoter and his wife Moira had joined the congregation. !Congregational AGM- The Vestry discussed the arrangements for the AGM to be held on 16 October. Linda, Jane and Elsie will provide soup and a filled roll for 12.15 pm. The Secretary will approach the leaders of activity groups for their annual report and write an article for the magazine regarding the Congregational Roll, matters members wish to raise and drawing attention to two vacancies on the Vestry in order to stimulate interest. !Visit by the Dean: The Dean will be visiting us on 28 September at 2 pm to inspect Church properties and registers. !Harvest Service: The collection at Harvest will go to Water Aid. A list will be put up in the porch for the bring and share catering. Cold meats will be provided by by the church via William.

Harvest Festival !Our Harvest Festival will take place this year at 11.00am on Sunday, 2 October. It would be good if you could come to church that day with a nonperishable food item that has a good sell-by date on it. These items will decorate the church during the service and then be donated to the North Ayrshire FoodBank.!There will be a special Harvest Festival collection that will go toward the vital work of Water Aid. Please make your donation using the envelope included in this edition of the magazine.!Every day, almost 900 children under-five die from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation.!Your support will enable parents to protect their children by giving them access to clean, safe water and the chance to build proper toilets. And by teaching members of the community about the best ways to stop the spread of diarrhoea, parents can pass their learnings on from generation to generation. Here's what your donation could achieve: • Help build a well so children around the world don’t have to drink filthy

river water that’s teeming with parasites, bacteria and animal waste. • Put taps and pumps in the heart of a community – daily treks to the river

with a heavy jerry can are tiring and leave little time for school or work. • End the threat of diarrhoreal diseases, which kill 900 children every day !Harvest Lunch The bring and share Harvest Lunch will take place in the church hall immediately following the Harvest Festival Service. To assist with catering arrangements, please sign the list in the porch and indicate if you would like to bring something to contribute to the lunch.!Harvest Baskets As is our custom, baskets of fruit will be given to frail elderly and sick members of our congregation following the Harvest Festival Service. Trip to Rosslyn

Almost 30 members and friends of St Columba’s greatly enjoyed the coach trip to the ancient, puzzling and ornately beautiful Rosslyn Chapel. It is one of the few medieval buildings that reman part of the Scottish Episcopal Church and is world famous for the beauty and detail of its gothic carvings.

The weather was kind on 10 September and visitors enjoyed exploring the chapel and surrounding area, having a snack in the visitor centre and rounding the day off with a light refreshment and very welcome meal in a local hostelry.

Many thanks for Vicky for all her help in arranging the coach and liaising with the hotel and to Chris for ensuring everything was paid and for reminding us all of just what we had ordered for dinner!

You can see a good collection of pictures from the day both on our church website largs-church.co.uk and Saint Columba’s, Largs Facebook page.

Perhaps we can all do something similar together again next year.

The Rector

A golden opportunity to get together !

Saturday, 17 September saw the church packed with clergy and people from many places to celebrate Fr Alec’s golden jubilee of priesthood. Bishop Idris presided at the votive Eucharist of the Holy Spirit and Bishop John was present to mark 50 years since his first curate was ordained priest.

The service was followed by a lovely lunch accompanied by much wine and the good weather allowed some to enjoy their meal outside in the garden by the hall.

Fr Alec would like to thank the many people (too many to mention here individually) for their gifts and cards, and especially to those who worked so hard to make the day itself such a happy and memorable occasion.

I am sure he will spend many a happy hour engrossed in the clerical details to be found in the book he received from members of St Columba’s - ‘Scottish Episcopal Clergy 1689-2000’!

The Rector !P.S.

Thanks to Gregor Anderson for being the ‘official photographer’ for Alec’s Golden Jubilee celebration. Some of the many pictures of the day will be posted both on the church website largs-church.co.uk and the Saint Columba’s, Largs Facebook page.

Blythswood Care 1966-2016 !

!Blythswood Care have been transforming lives now for 50 years. Over the past few of these our congregation have participated in the annual Christmas Shoebox Appeal and I hope we can do so again this year and help Blythswood Care reach their two millionth shoebox during their anniversary year.

Soon you will see shoeboxes wrapped in Christmas paper piled up at the back of church. Please take one, together with an information leaflet, and decide the gender and age of the person you would like to buy a Christmas gift for.

Things we take for granted can often be luxuries for people living in desperate poverty.  The shoeboxes received last year were distributed in Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Pakistan, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. Each one brought great joy and expressed Christian love.!For Christmas delivery your shoebox should be filled and returned no later than Sunday, 30 October.!Many thanks in advance for your support,
