    CLASS 1 SUPPORTS THE QATAR

    ORPHAN FOUNDATION

At the beginning o 2008 the International Oshore Team Association (IOTA) reached

an agreement with the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) to launch Class 1 or

Dhreima an initiative to support the Qatar Orphan Foundation.

Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani, President o the QMSF and IOTA, was instrumental

in encouraging Class 1 a sport in which he has been a leading gure since 2003 to

become an active vehicle to raise awareness o the oundation. In presenting thisinitiative I wanted to emphasise how sport, in whatever orm or however extreme, can

support the values and the importance o the activities o an organisation such as the

    Qatar Orphan Foundation.

During the course o the year, the association between Class 1 and Dhreima developed

a series o activities and events that took place at races, with the purpose o highlighting

the activities o Dhreima and nding synergy with similar organisations based in

countries that host Class 1 GP events.

The Qatar Orphan Foundation - Dhreima was launched on 10 June 2003 under the

patronage o Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Al-Misnad, Chairman o the

Supreme Council. We in the Qatari Orphan Foundation believe that our community

values o solidarity, compassion and cooperation make us truly capable o providing all

the support the children need, said Nabil Ali Bin Ali, Chairman o the Dhreima Board,

adding, and we are extremely happy that the Class 1 Championship has elected to

    support the Foundation.

CURTISCONFIDENTOF SUCCESSIN 2009Eight times World Champion, Steve Curtis, wants his world title back and is

condent the team will deliver wins and trophies in 2009.

Qatar 96s throttleman has vowed to return to winning ways, ater a

disastrous 2008 campaign saw the ormer Champion and team principal,

Sheikh Hassan, without a race win. This year will be a very dierent story.

We have put in a lot o work over the winter, we have several new guys on

the team and we are all very, very ocussed, he said. We have made some

quite radical changes to the boat, we know she is very good in rough seas,

but with the likelihood o limited rough races this year, we really need a boat

that is also quick in fat conditions.

NICOLA TEAMS UP WITHAL SUWAIDINicola Giorgi and Ahmed Al Suwaidi will race

together or only their second time in the Qatar

Grand Prix. The pair teamed up last year in

    Dubai, ollowing Nicolas maiden podium

nish, and he believes that the team can

build on that success. 2008 was a year odevelopment. Now I believe we nally have

ound the right solutions to be competitive in

the Championship, and the podium we gained

in Dubai is just the start and we can only

    improve.

    PREPARE TO TAKE ON THE

WORLDS BEST IN CLASS 1Maritimo Australia mark their return to ull

time racing in Class 1 in Qatar, the venue

where team boss Bill Barry-Cotter and Peter

McGrath took the teams historic maiden

win in Class 1 in 2002.

    Leading Maritimo Australias two-boat

assault on the world title and out onto the

water or the season opener is Class 1s

    youngest competitor, Tom Barry-Cotter, who

celebrated his 21st birthday on 27 March.

Tom will partner Norwegian Pal Virik Nilsen,

    with the straight-talking New Zealander,

Peter Muddy McGrath, back in Class 1 or

the rst time in over three years, alongside

    Italian, Giorgio Manuzzi.

    Duemme Broker team boss, Domenico

Cirilli, will unveil his new-look team or

2009 - owned by Duemme Yacht Brokers

Spain S.L and based out o Torrevieja,

Spain - at the Spanish Grand Prix in

Dubais Victory team, the deending World, Middle East and Edox Pole Position

Champions, will start amongst the avourites or race honours and have rolled out

three World Champions as they launch their bid to retain their crowns and hunt

down a ourth win in Qatari waters. Deending Champion, Nadir Bin Hendi is joined

in Fazza 3 by 2007 World and European Champion, Ari Al Zaeen, with his ormer

partner, Jean-Marc Sanchez, again called on by the team to steer another rookie -

Mohammad Al Mehairi - through his rst season.

The Qatar tEam pose the greatest threat, and Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani is

in absolutely no doubt that his team can kick-start their season-long campaign with

a win on home waters. Sheikh Hassan, looking or his rst win in Doha, lines up with

ormer World Champion Steve Curtis - looking or his sixth win - in Qatar 96, with

team-mates Matteo Nicolini and Abdullah Al-Sulaiti, who hold the in-house bragging

rights ater taking the teams only win in 2008, lining up in the Sterling V8-powered,

Qatar 95, with Al-Sulaiti looking or his second win in ront o a partisan crowd.

The bid to oust the sports two titans and upset the orm book, is headed by

the deending European Champion, Jorn Tandberg, who reorms his winning

partnership with ellow Norwegian, Christian Zaborowski, running the Mercury-

    Class 1-powered scarlet MTI, WElmax.

maritimo australia is the third team elding a two-boat line-up and will be

hoping to repeat the success that team owner, Bill Barry-Cotter and Peter McGrath

enjoyed in Doha in 2002, when they took their maiden Class 1 win. Twenty one-

year-old, Tom Barry-Cotter and Pal Virik Nilsen orm the youngest partnership

in Class 1, but can boast the most races together o any driver-throttleman

combination in the Championship, and will run a new hull, Maritimo 11, with Peter

McGrath joined by Italian, Giorgio Manuzzi, in the boat the team debuted in Dubai

last season - both outts opting to run Maritimo Perormance V8 power-plants.
