The role of bearingsDisplacements and deformations arising in structures (due to thermal changes, shrinkage, creep etc.) cause inadvertent and uncontrollable constraints and forces during the buildings service life, unless be-arings are properly used. The resulting loads affect the static sys-tem and may, with excessive application of force and eccentricities, overload the building materials. Building damage such as cracking and spalling may result.

Functions• Introduce loads centrally• Absorb angle rotations from deflection

of the components, without increased edge pressure

• Permit horizontal movements as smoothly as possible

• Accommodate any unevenness and ma-nufacturing tolerances

• Thermal isolation• Reduce sound transmission The load-carrying capacity of a bearing is determined by the material and the design of the bearing core, the sliding pairing and the substructure.

mageba bearings – Solutions for all circumstances

Demands on our productsIn 2003, mageba was the first company in the bearing manufacturing sector to have its quality management system certified according to ISO 9001. As one of the world‘s leading manufactu-rers of bridge bearings for roads and rail-ways, mageba is subjected daily to the most stringent requirements with regards, for example, to safety and maintenance. For us this is a stimulus to further improve the high quality of our products and their application.

Our services• Preparation of special solutions for

the support of your structure • Consultation, and design of bearings • Training of engineers in the use of

bearings • Supervision and training of the buil-

ding contractor during installation • Inspection of installed bearings • Procurement/Costing • Execution of project-specific laboratory

tests

StandardsReinforced elastomeric bearings are regulated in Europe by EN 1337-3. This standard also concerns certain unrein-forced elastomeric bearings.

Wall bearingsThe LASTO®WALL wall bearings greatly decrease unwanted noise transmissions through the building.

Deformation bearings are suitable for:• Central force application • Absorption of large rotations • Absorption of small horizontal dis-

placements

Sliding bearings are recommended for :• Absorption of very large horizontal

displacements• Absorption of rotations• Central force application

Point bearingsmageba‘s extensive range of high-quality, re-inforced and unreinforced deformation and sliding bearings, all constructional challenges can be overcome. For the highest building loads you can refer to our tried and tested pot and spherical bearings, which have been extensively used in bridge construction.

Slab bearingsThe building construction bearings of the LASTO®STRIP and LASTO®FOL range deve-loped and tested by mageba transfer the building loads and movements in a con-trolled and almost constraint-free manner to the adjacent construction unit. They thereby ensure the durability of the buil-ding.

* Slabs of 0.25m thickness or less, in high buildings, with insufficient subsequent treatment (curing)

Distance I [from Z, in m]

low slab thickness, dry environment *

high slab thickness, humid/wet environment

Expansion due to temperature is general-ly only significant for external parts of a structure or unheated rooms.

Important: For thermally uninsulated buildings such as multi-storey car parks or storage halls, only high-durability LASTO®STRIP TS sliding bearings should be used.

Rotation of slabsAssuming a deflection of l/200, the rota-tion angle will in normal circumstances (residential or office building with normal use) typically not exceed 20 ‰.

Rigid zoneDepending on a building’s geometry, lo-cation and vertical loading, horizontal loading of approximately 10% of vertical loading can typically be assumed as a first estimate. These horizontal loads must be resisted by a rigid zone or core of the building, such as a lift shaft. Only deformation bearings, and not sliding bearings, should be used in the rigid zone.

Shrinkage and creepFor slabs with a thickness of up to 25cm in apartment or commercial structures, shrinkage of up to 0.6 ‰ can occur. The amount of shrinkage depends on slab thickness and the prevailing humidity; the drier and thinner a slab is, the more shrin-kage can be expected.

Temperature

Temperature: ∆l= αt x ∆t x lαt: Coefficient of expansion due to temperature 10-5/oC ∆t : Change in temperature [oC]

Shrinkage: ∆l= 0.6‰ x l∆l: Change in length [m]l : Distance from the move ment “zero point” [m]Source: SIA 262 and DIN 1045-1 for slabs with unfavourable edge conditions

Example:Floor plan of a residential building

Legend: Deformation bearings

Sliding bearings

* within a radius of 4m of the fixed point, the deformation capacity of a 5mm LASTO®STRIP NS bearing will accommodate the shrinkage that can be expected.

Arrangement of bearingsBased on the calculated movements, thebearing type is determined as follows.

1 Determine the building’s movement “zero point” / fixed point (e.g. centre of lift shaft or stairwell)

2 Show zones on a floor plan3 Allocate bearing types to each load-

bearing wall (one type per wall sec-tion) or pile

Non-standard designsmageba can design and manufacture be-arings to satisfy all conceivable load and movement demands. Of course, all rele-vant project requirements will be consi-dered.

Pre-selection of the point bearing type1. Selection of the required load-carrying capacity ① (Example: Fz = 235kN, A= 140x140mm)σz = 235:1402 = 12N/mm2

2. Selection of the required horizontal de-formation capacity ② (Example: vx,y = 40mm)

3. Selection of the required bearing type from the diagram ③ (Example: LASTO®FLONPAD GP9)

4. Determine rotation capacity from the second diagram ①/④(Example: αerf = 2.5%)Intersection ⑤ is below the rotation boundary line for the LASTO®FLONPAD GP9 → condition fulfilled5. Check the rotation capacity of the selected bearing with the help of the pro-duct brochure (Example: LASTO®FLONPAD PG9)

Load capacityLASTO®WALL C and G are suitable for multi-storey building with up to 8 storeys. The adjacent diagram shows the calcula-ted load-carrying capacity of brick-work fxk according to SIA 266:2003 [N/mm2] when using a LASTO®WALL wall bearing under the brick-work. Testing by p+f Sursee proved that brick walls with and without wall bearings offer the same load-carrying capacity.
