A word rom our CEO and Chairman
People aected by cancer come to Maggiesthrough many routes, and the journey to us can
oten be an isolated and rightening one. But timeand again people tell us that they eel dierentrom the moment they walk into a MaggiesCentre. In the last year our centres received over88,000 visits, a 16% increase on 2008. In additionto this we have received 4,000 visits to our HongKong centre based at Tuen Mun hospital. Some67% o visitors came to our centres because theyhave cancer; 33% are amily or riends o someonewith cancer; 50% came on the recommendationo their doctor or nurse.
Each o our visitors has their own story, withdierent challenges and dierent hopes. Ourprogramme is designed to help people fnd thestrength within themselves to manage theircancer journey, wherever it may take them. As anorganisation, we hold on to this central philosophyso that we can continue to thrive and adapt. Thechallenge as we grow is to make sure we keepproviding the personal, relational support thatmakes our programme so powerul or the
people who use it.
Our ultimate aim is to have a Maggies Centre ateach o the 58 major cancer centres across the UK.By the end o the decade we hope to be at leasthalway to achieving this goal.
Thanks to the exceptional generosity o oursupporters we have been able to welcomemore people than ever to our centres. Despite achallenging economic climate our annual turnover
has increased and the Joy o Living Campaign
has reached 12 million o its 15 million target.Maggies Cotswolds is due to open in autumn
o this year and construction o South West Wales,Oxord and Nottingham will start within the next12 months. Construction o the Glasgow GartnavelCentre, adjacent to the Beatson Cancer Centre,is due to start shortly. In Lanarkshire, where wecurrently run an interim service at Wishaw GeneralHospital, construction o our ull centre, to bebased at Monklands Hospital where cancer servicesare now situated, is due to start later this year.
The extraordinary support o our patrons and
donors has been crucial to the success o the lastyear, and will continue to be crucial in the years tocome. We are extremely grateul or the unerringcommitment o our president HRH The Duchesso Cornwall, our Joy o Living Patron Sarah Brownand all our Patrons and Board members. We arehugely appreciative o the volunteers who in somany ways give their time and commitment toMaggies.
Our greatest inspiration, though, is rom the
people who walk through our doors. Walk intoany centre and youll be greeted by smiles andlaughter, as ordinary people ace extraordinarychallenges with real hope and determination. It is their courage that inspires all that we do.

Getting to the heart o the matter
When I was diagnosed with cancerI elt I had crossed a line. I lookedaround and thought to mysel all othese people are busy living their lives, taking the uture or granted. I am areak, a one-breasted woman. I donteven know i I have a uture. I suddenlyelt very alone and very, very lonely. Itdidnt make any dierence that I hada loving amily and wonderul riends. This wasnt happening to them.Lucy, Maggies Online Centre

Initial diagnosisAter being diagnosed I ound mysel askingquestions that doctors and nurses couldnt answer.I needed to speak to people that had gone throughwhat I was eeling. The support group helpedenormously. I could speak to people whounderstood. Ive also been to the relaxation andstress management classes at Maggies which
were brilliant. The worry and stress that a cancerdiagnosis can bring on is indescribable.Peter, Maggies Glasgow
Transition ater treatmentAll my amily talk about is how good it will beto see the treatment fnished so that we can allget back to normal. For me at the moment it eelsas i things will never be the same again, I eelI cant get back to normal, its like I have tofnd a new normality.
Gail, Maggies Oxford
All ClearMRI clear!... Thats the best news Ive ever had!And guess what? I burst into tears and couldntstop!! I theyd told me it was bad news, I wasprepared or that and would have handled it a lotbetter but good news I dont do good news!!Anna, Maggies Online Centre
Key moments that matter
RecurrenceAter the second diagnosis Christine and I cameout o the oncology unit in a daze, and walked intoMaggies. We were both pretty numb at the time.It was one o the best things we ever did. They satus down and we had a cup o tea and we wentthrough things. It got our eet on the ground andpointed us in the right direction.
Norrie, Maggies Edinburgh
End o lieMaggies takes the loneliness out o cancer its about learning to live in the moment. It canhelp to have someone to guide you through thebad days and celebrate the good its importantto appreciate what youve got and make themost o it.Alan, Maggies Fife
BereavementI went to Maggies two or three weeks ater mywie Brigid died but I said to Andrew, the centrehead: You are here or people with cancer not orbereavement counselling.. And he said: I want tohelp. So then I went to see him every other week.Going to Maggies helps me to break downdecisions. I can talk about practical things but alsoabout grie and anger. The beauty o it is that hehad met Brigid and seen us together. He knewhow when she entered a room a light went on.Klaus, Maggies Edinburgh

Expanding our network o cancer caring
centres across the UK requires us to reachkey milestones. These are:
Our milestones
Approval to buildIn 2009 we received approval to beginbuilding fve centres: Gartnavel, South WestWales, Oxord, Nottingham, North East.
Building local support
Our local supporters helped to raise 2.3 millionacross the regions and raise awareness oMaggies. Support rom NHS colleagues playeda crucial part in directing people to Maggies.50% o our visitors were directed to Maggiesby an NHS proessional.
Getting the media on boardIn 2009 we had successul media partnershipsin several regions, running undraising appeals with:Nottingham Evening Post Target 500,000
Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Standard Target 200,000Newcastle Evening Chronicle Target 500,000
Press coverage through these partnerships andother publicity was valued at 9.5 million (AVE).
Raising incomeIn 2009:8.8 million turnover2.8 million raised or capital projects
(See pages 18/19 for a full breakdownof how our money was raised in 2009)
Peoples Postcode LotteryIn 2009 Maggies received 628,000 rom thePeoples Postcode Lottery who are now supportingour work in Scotland, England and Wales. Thistakes the total received by Maggies since the starto the partnership up to a staggering 1.16 million.
This partnership is crucially important to Maggiesas it also raises awareness o what we do throughsome unique media and marketing opportunitiesand we look orward to continuing to work withthem in 2011 and beyond.
Walk the WalkMaggies has been working in partnership withgrant making charity Walk the Walk since 2007,when it awarded unding to help us develop ourOnline Support Centre and to provide outreach

A diagnosis o cancer brings with it uncertainty. It
can lead you to reassess and re-evaluate your ideasabout normal everyday lie. A Maggies Centre isa space in which you can fnd the tools and supportto adapt to and manage this new normality.
To provide this support we need to continuallyevaluate and assess the quality o our programme.
We do this through a triennial peer-to-peer review,an annual audit o centre users and our qualityassurance programme. Our next triennial reviewwill take place in 2011.
Our annual audit or 2009 showed 100%satisaction rating by centre visitorsOver 50% came to Maggies ollowing therecommendation o an NHS healthcare proessional60% visited Maggies or drop-in support40% visited to participate in workshops or courses
Continual evaluation and assessment
I always believed wholeheartedlyin the Maggies approach to caringor people with cancer and I saw this
as complementing the treatment mycolleagues and I give people withcancer in the NHS. Then I wasdiagnosed with cancer mysel andhad the opportunity to see Maggiesrom the other side. In my positionI already had access to all theinormation I could need. Thehospital environment was amiliarto me and I was being treated by mycolleagues who are riends and yetMaggies still oered me valuablesupport. It was essential to have the
space and time away rom thehospital environment to contemplate, talk and consider my whole lie nowthat cancer was a part o it. Maggiesare remarkable centres and it is prettyhard to put into words how specialthey are.
