Mutinda C. Kyama, is a Biomedical Scientist and a faculty >Senior LecturerA in the Department of Medical Laboratory
Sciences, School of Biomedical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and
Technology. He has special research interest in studying the pathogenesis of endometriosis, ovarian cancer, breast
cancer, cervical cancer3 and stem cell biology and investigate the role of stem cells in the pathophysiology of uterine
benign and malignant tumours. His interest in biomedical science stems from a deep philosophical commitment to
cure diseases. Purpose is the engine that powers his life, and like most scientists who have lost loved ones to
terrible illness, an interest in understanding how disease cause suffering and mortality changed readily and deeply
into a drive to contribute to the development of the neMt generation of medical care. In 1998, Kyama earned his
bachelors degree in Biochemistry from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. In 1999, he 4oined the Institute of Primate
Research, Karen-Nairobi, Kenya to serve as Research Assistant in the female reproduction research programme. In
2002, he visited the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, New Jersey, USA as an intern to gain further training in
Molecular Biology. After completing his training in Molecular Biology techniWues, he was awarded a masterXs
scholarship in September 2002 by the Katholieke University of Leuven >KULeuvenA, Belgiumand moved to Europe to
pursue his masters training. He graduated with Masters degree in Medical Sciences >Magna Cum Laude) in 2004
from KULeuven, Belgium. Dr. Kyama in 2005, received the prestigious KULeuven Interfaculty Council for
DevelopmentCooperationgrant(InterfacultaireRaadvoorOntwikkelingssamenwerking(IRO)Doctoralawardin
Biomedical Sciences) to carry out his doctoral thesis work at the Laboratory of EMperimental Gynaecology
>Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University Hospital Gasthuisberg, KULeuven, BelgiumA and was
awarded a doctor of Biomedical Sciences >Mechanisms of Human DiseaseA on September 2009, under the
mentorship of Prof. Dr. Thomas M. DXHooghe. The title of his doctoral thesis was: Endometriosis: New insight in
pathogenesis and search for potential biomarkers. He was a visiting postdoctoral fellow at the Laboratory of
EMperimental Gynaecology >University Hospital Gasthuisberg, KULeuven, BelgiumA in 2011 under the mentorship of
Prof. Dr. Thomas M. DXHooghe as a recipient of IROspecializationaward offered by KULeuven Interfaculty Council
for Development Cooperation. Dr. Kyama is also a recipient of the WorldEndometriosisSocietyRodolpheMaheaux
Travelaward(2011). This award is given in recognition of outstanding research conducted by individuals who are
young researchers in endometriosis. He has co-authored over 50 scientific articles published in internationally peer-
reviewed 4ournals and contributed several book chapters. He has also presented over 50 abstracts at
international^local meetings and has also been invited speaker to international symposium. He has been a member
of European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, cum member of the Special Interest Group in
Endometriosis and Endometrium from 2003 to 2009, member of Belgium Society for Reproductive Medicine from
2003 to 2009, and a member of the World Endometriosis Society since 2008. Associate Faculty Member of the
Faculty of 1000 Medicine from 2008 to 2011. Member of the Kenya Society for Immunology since 2011. Member of
the editorial team of the 4ournal of Clinical Immunology and Immunopathology, the International Journal of
Reproductive Medicine, the African Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences Research and SM Journal of
Gynecology and Obstetrics. He is serving as a board member of the Endometriosis Foundation of Kenya. He is adhoc
reviewer of several international 4ournals including Human Reproduction, Gynecological Surgery, American Journal
of Reproductive Immunology, Molecular Human Reproduction and Gynecologic b Obstetric Investigation. He
currently has active grants in endometriosis, breast cancer, cervical cancer and endometrial stem cells.
