Magnet Program
University Magnet Program Overview
The University Magnet Program offers an enriched, highly structured and rigorous level of education to prepare students for admission to colleges and universities, as well as the world of work. Students will develop both the skills a sound liberal arts education provides, and the competencies essential for success and leadership in the emerging creative economy.
The challenging interdisciplinary curriculum will foster an appreciation of the connections among fields of knowledge. Magnet students may major in the following:
• Arts & Humanities• Behavioral & Social Sciences• Business & Marketing• Mathematics & Science• Natural Sciences• Visual & Performing Arts
The University Magnet Program strives to prepare students to become responsible, lifelong learners with demonstrated abilities in creative problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making. Students will be equipped with the necessary leadership tools that may be utilized in college, the workplace and in community environments. All University students will graduate with a proficient knowledge of computers and technology.
Distinctions
University Magnet Program students must:• maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average
• acquire an Advanced Studies Diploma
• complete at least 200 community service hours
• participate in an internship program related to theirmajor during senior year
• participate in at least two extra-curricular activitieseach year
• complete at least six honors and/or AP classeswith a minimum of two honors and/or AP classcompleted each year

Requirements for an Advanced Diploma

All students enrolled in the University Magnet Program must work towards fulfilling the requirements for an Advanced Diploma. The requirements are as follows:
• 4 credits in English• 4 credits in Mathematics• 4 credits in Social Studies• 4 credits in Science• 3 or more credits in a World Language• 1 credit in a Fine Art or Career & Technical Education Course• 1 credit in Physical Education• 1 credit in Health• 1 credit in Economics and Personal Finance• 3 electives
All students must pass nine SOL tests in order to receive an Advanced Diploma.

Early College Program

The Early College Program in Newport News is a partnership between Newport News Public Schools and Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC). The program is for qualified high school seniors who plan to attend a college or university after they graduate from high school.
Seniors in this program may earn up to 19 semester hours of college-credit prior to high school graduation. The courses offered in this program are part of the Commonwealth College Course Collaborative (CCCC). Public colleges and universities have agreed to transfer credit for credit these courses as part of the college’s general education requirements.
What are the benefits? • Increases college readiness.• Provides opportunity to earn up to 19 transferable college credits.• Families only pay half of tuition for second semester.• Textbooks are provided by NNPS.• Transportation is provided by NNPS.• Students benefit from all high school activities while being a college student.• Ongoing support and tutoring provided.
The Early College Model • Central focus is college readiness and high school-college transition.• Variety of transitional strategies employed to help students make the transition.• Partnership with community college.

The University Magnet Program ensures that students have the well-rounded experience in high school that makes them more marketable to the colleges of their choice.
