INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS LIBERAL ARTSInternational Programs are internationally benchmarked programs offering students a unique opportunity to meet national as well as international diploma requirements. M-DCPS has partnered with some of the world’s premiere international programs to ensure that M-DCPS students are globally competent and prepared for future educational and career choices world-wide.

The International Education (IE) Program immerses students in a multicultural education that promotes global competence. Most IE programs also emphasize learning a second language. The IE programs prepare students to be informed citizens of a ever-changing global society and economy.

The International Studies (IS) Program is an international dual language acquisition program implemented throughout grades K-12 as a collaborative effort with the Ministries of Education of foreign countries, including Spain, Germany, France, and Italy. This collaboration promotes a rigorous international academic program in which students are immersed in a Modern Language as they learn core subjects in the second language, resulting in a curriculum that emphasizes competency in a foreign language, student-centered learning, and global perspective.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is governed by the International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. The IB Program provides a balanced and rigorous international curriculum from grades K-12 which links the Humanities, Sciences, Mathematics, Languages, and Community Service, as well as an emphasis on learning a second language. The goal of the IB curriculum is to develop well-rounded, creative, compassionate citizens of a global community.

The Cambridge International (CIE) Program is an international curriculum designed and implemented in partnership with England’s renowned University of Cambridge, appealing to academically advanced and motivated students. This engaging, accelerated, academic experience, ensures students are challenged to work at the highest level of international standards in Math, Science, English, and Language Arts.

The AP Capstone Program, designed and monitored by College Board, prepares high achieving high school students for success in college through a rigorous and innovative program that equips students with independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills, which are increasingly valued by colleges and employers world-wide. AP Capstone candidates study topics of global relevance from an interdisciplinary perspective, making connections between these topics and their AP subjects.

With an emphasis on Business, Global Studies, Legal Studies, and Service Industries, the Liberal Arts Programs offer students a variety of opportunities to engage as global citizens of an ever-changing world. A challenging interdisciplinary curriculum focused on the Humanities, Language Arts, and Social Sciences encourages hands-on learning in a technology rich environment. Academic excellence, and commitment to the values of diversity, community, and collaboration, as well as social awareness, distinguish the Liberal Arts Magnet School Programs.

A Virtual Learning Program through Miami-Dade Online (MDO) Academy is available to all students in grades K-12. This accredited, on-line virtual public school program offers a student-centered interactive learning environment to independent learners with the support of fully certified educators. Teachers provide students with superior knowledge of subject matter and individualized educational support to encourage critical thinking and to help develop curious minds through a high-quality curriculum.

VIRTUAL LEARNING

Visual & Performing Arts Programs provide intellectually stimulating and educationally challenging classes in the Arts or Arts Technology for students who demonstrate a talent in a particular art form or who show a strong interest in the arts. While some programs require students to audition, other pro-grams invite students with an affinity for the arts to develop their passions in an environment rich in creativity. Student talents and interests are nurtured through a continuous ex-change between student and teachers, with numerous oppor-tunities to showcase talents.

VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS

S.T.E.M. Programs encourage students who have an interest or skill strength in the Sciences, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics fields to explore and develop their talents and to prepare for a future in the fastest growing career industries world-wide. Included in S.T.E.M. Programs are the Medical Health Services Programs, which offer a broad variety of options for students to explore career opportunities and interest in the health sciences.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWHY SHOULD MY CHILD ATTEND A MAGNET PROGRAM? Magnet programs offer an enhanced educational opportunity for interested students in grades K – 12, through specialized high-interest programs. Different Magnet themes provide a wide range of educational options designed to meet a variety of student interests. The goals of Magnet programs are to provide an excellent educational opportunity for students through a stimulating and motivating interactive curriculum, and to facilitate multicultural collaboration and cooperation.

THE MAGNET SCHOOL OF MY CHOICE IS IN MY CURRENT SCHOOL ATTENDANCE BOUNDARY; DO I HAVE TO APPLY? Yes. All Magnet programs require all students to apply for placement. Magnet programs/schools do not adhere to boundary restrictions.

ONCE MY CHILD IS IN A MAGNET SCHOOL, DO I HAVE TO APPLY EACH YEAR? Students who are currently enrolled in a Magnet school do not have to re-apply unless they want to change schools or programs.

Selection into a Visual & Performing Arts Audition-Based program requires that students audition for the program in addition to completing the application process.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAGNET AND CHOICE PROGRAMS? Magnet programs offer exceptional educational opportunities, without the boundary restrictions of traditional schools, to experience high quality education through specialized programs which focus on student interests, talents, and abilities. For admission to a Magnet program, students must complete the application process open from October 1st through January 15th. Choice programs are different from Magnet programs in that Choice programs are designed for and first offered to students who are assigned to the school site boundary. Once boundary students are placed, any open seats are then made available to out-of-boundary students through the Region transfer process.

IS IT POSSIBLE FOR MY CHILD TO TRANSFER FROM ONE MAGNET PROGRAM TO ANOTHER MAGNET PROGRAM? No. Students may not transfer from one Magnet program to another. Students wishing to change Magnet programs or schools must re-apply, qualify, and be offered placement for the new Magnet program during the regular Magnet application cycle.

ARE STUDENTS SELECTED ON FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS? No. The selection process is a computerized random selection process and occurs after the application deadline period. Except for visual and performing arts programs that require an audition.

WHAT IS A DEFINITION OF A SIBLING? A sibling is a biological, adopted, foster, half or step brother/sister who shares the same parent/legal guardian and lives at the same address as a student that is currently attending the Magnet school for which you are applying, and will continue to attend the same Magnet school for the following school year.

HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED FOR A MAGNET PROGRAM? Students interested in attending a Magnet program must complete and submit a Magnet application. When the number of eligible applications exceeds the number of seats available in a school Magnet program, a computerized random selection (lottery) process is used for student admission. Eligible students who submit an application by the deadline will qualify for participation in the lottery.

IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED TO MAGNET PROGRAMS? According to School Board guidelines, transportation availability is limited and may not be available to all students. The Magnet lead teacher or Magnet secretary at each school can assist you in determining if your child/children are eligible for transportation.

HOW MANY MAGNET PROGRAMS CAN MY CHILD APPLY TO? Each child is encouraged to apply to up to five Magnet programs at five different schools. Each child may only apply to one Magnet program per school.

A LEGACY OF CHOICE

ADDITIONAL CHOICES

For more than 60 years, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has been at the forefront of the choice movement in education. Henry S. West Laboratory School was established in 1954 as an experimental school of choice associated with the School of Education at the University of Miami. This initiative was followed in 1963 by the development and implementation of a dual language program at Coral Way Elementary School. Magnet programs began in Miami-Dade County Public Schools in 1973 with the opening of a center for the Expressive Arts in the heart of the inner city at Charles R. Drew Elementary School. Since then, M-DCPS has implemented a broad variety of choice programs including the first corporate–based Satellite Learning Center in 1987; the first controlled open-enrollment schools in 1995; and the State’s first charter school in

1996. As of the 2018 – 2019 school year, over 68.8% (240,487 students) of M-DCPS students in grades Pre-K through 12th grade, have made an active choice in the school or program in which they are enrolled.

Educational choices offer sound investments for the future of our students and in the business workforce needs of tomorrow. Today our entire community benefits from the over 1000 Magnet and Choice options offered by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

SCHOOL CHOICE PROGRAMS (non-Magnet) In addition to Magnet programs, Miami-Dade County Public Schools continues to strive to offer more flexibility and variety in school choice by providing specialized non-Magnet programs that give parents and students other exceptional options in their educational decisions. Choice programs offer a broad variety of specialty programs from grades PreK-12 at most schools throughout the district.

Choice programs are different from Magnet programs in that Choice programs are designed for and first offered to students who are assigned to the school site boundary. Once boundary students are placed, any open seats are then made available to out-of-boundary students through the Region transfer process.

School Choice programs are thematic, curriculum-based programs offered at all grade levels and implemented during the regular school day; after school programs are not delineated as part of the Choice options. Please note that transportation is not routinely provided for Choice programs, therefore parents may need to make arrangements for transporting their child to these schools should a transfer be granted by the appropriate Region.

Through the Choice programs new online resource at schoolchoicemiami.com, parents have easy access to a complete listing of all non-Magnet Choice programs available. This site also provides step-by-step procedures for transferring to a Choice Program school.
