CREATIVE IDEAS

Page 2: Magnet tutorial

Last year I created a really handy desk calendar using the calendar digital stamps. I still use it regularly in my craft room to remind me to make cards for people. Sometimes I need to have that kind of information closer to hand. My fridge is like the Oracle. I have various important notes from school, dental appointment cards, shopping lists etc all stuck on the side of it. I didn’t have a special occasions reminder, but I do now.

You will need:-

A printer

Calendar Digis

Circle cutter

Spare thick card

Glue

Magnets

Pva glue or glossy accents (if you want a glossy finish)

Step 1

I have gone with a rainbow colour theme because I adore rainbows.

Measure your circle cutter/die across the diameter.

Using whichever software you use with your digital images, size the calendar digis just a mm smaller than your cutter. Mine are just over 6cm wide. I gave mine a colourful border before printing but you can also matt and layer onto different coloured card.

Step 2 Print out on the thickest card your printer will take. Mine will usually print on 300gsm but I used a 270gsm card this time. I die cut each one and to make them more sturdy I also cut 12 of the same size circles out of a 350gsm kraft card.

Using a tape pen (less messy) I stuck the calendar digis to the kraft card circles.

I used my computer to put the colourful date marker circles on prior to printing, but it would be just as easy to do it with fineline coloured pens or highlighters.

Using a strong glue, I had some no more nails left over from a DIY job. Stick a magnet to the back of each of the circles.

Step 4

Page 6: Magnet tutorial

This step isn’t necessary but dependent on the finish you want, here are a some methods to make your magnets more durable.

1. Allow the ink on the calendars to cure overnight and then using a soft brush, cover the entire circle including the edges with PVA glue and allow to dry.

2. Glossy Accents give a wonderful glossy finish to the magnets.

3. Triple heat emboss the magnets, more time consuming but it also gives a wonderful finish. Do this step before gluing the magnets on or else they will get very hot from the heat gun.

I tried a couple of different layouts but ended up going with the circular one in the end.

Step 6 Top tip:

Buy some printable magnetic sheets and then cut them out with your circle dies. I like how the card ones sit out from the fridge though which is why I chose this method.

Next up I’ll show how to make decorate fridge magnets out of digital images.

Step 1 You will need a digital image, I chose Pirate and Dog Digital Stamp

Shape cutter

Pens, Pencils, Paint

Clear embossing pad

Clear embossing powder

Magnet

Print out your digital image, place the shape cutter/die over the top and cut.

I cut another shape out of thick kraft card I glued it to the back to make it more substantial.

Step 2 Start colouring the image, I used alcohol markers for the sea and sky. I then swapped to fineline pens for the smaller areas.

I cut a hole through the top of the image in case I decided to use it as a card topper instead of a magnet.

Step 3 Press the coloured image into the clear embossing pad, try to make sure that the entire image is covered.

Cover with embossing powder and then heat with your heat gun. Press the image back into the embossing pad and cover with powder again and heat. Repeat one more time.

If you don’t have embossing powder and a heat gun then glossy accents will work just as well.

Step 4 Stick a magnet to the back and you have your very own hand crafted fridge magnet. Alternatively thread some ribbon or string through the hole and use as a card topper or scrapbook embellishment.

I hope you enjoyed my tutorials.
