  • w CONTINUOUS EMISSION MONITORING SYSTEMS (CEMS)-

    ENDA-600 SYSTEM FROM HORIBA

Eng. Willibald Zibuschka HORIBA GmbH, Tulln, Austria

Abstract The n u m b e r of applications for gas analyzers, for studying global environmental problems resul t ing from combustion exhaust, research on energy conservation and control gas concen t ra t i ons in process gas, have been steadily growing.

    H o r i b a is a leader in stack-gas analysis system, with over 10.000 systems installed wor ldw ide . This experience, along with the latest in analyser technology and electronic e n g i n e e r i n g , has resulted in the ENDA-600 Series Stack Gas Analysis system

The ENDA-600 Series includes a single analyzer unit that can measure up to five components, including NO, SO?, CO, C0 2 and 0 2 . Combining these measurements in one analyzer unit sets a new standard for continuous Emission Monitoring Systems.

The portable Gas Analyzer PG-250 is a single unit capable of measuring five components with the same methods used by permanent CEMS.

Introduction of Analysis section Horiba's advanced technology now makes it possible to use a single analyzer unit to measure up to five critical components in stack gas: NO, S02 , CO, C0 2 and 0 2 The principle of measurement for NOx, S0 2 l CO and C0 2 is the cross-flow-modulation non-dispersive infrared analyzer, a method which is intrinsically free of zero drift, and does not ever require optical adjustment or alignment.

The solenoid valve that open and close continuously at a steady cycle are used to alternate introduce the sample gas and a reference gas (i.e., zero gas or fixed concentration gas) into the sample cell at a constant flow rate Infrared rays from the infrared light source are sent through the sample cell and are than measured by a detector The difference in infrared energy absorbed when the reference gas flow through the cell and when the sample gas flows through the cell results in a difference in pressure This causes the displacement of a thin membrane within the detector this displacement is converted to an electrical signal

  • Principle behind the magneto pneumatic oxygen analyzer: When oxygen, which is a paramagnetic gas, is in an uneven magnetic field, it is attracted to the stronger portion of the magnetic field. This causes a rise in pressure magneto pneumatic cell. The increase in pressure at this time depends on the strength of the magnetic field, the magnetic susceptibility of oxygen and the concentration of oxygen. This pressure rise is reproduced outside the magnetic field by carrier gas. The fluctuation in pressure is picked up by a detector with a condenser type microphone ahd is converted into an electric signal. A stable signal is produced and transmitted by exciting the electromagnet intermittently and producing an alternating signal.

Sampling section Different standard sample gas conditioning systems are available for a wide range of applications. Each system features a moisture removal system designed to increase measurement accuracy by minimizing loss of S 0 2 and N0 2 in removed condensate. Also, since the ENDA-600 series requires only a small amount of sample for an accurate measurement, filters and other components require less maintenance.

A mist-catcher in the sample flow path removes S0 3 . This feature makes it possible to eliminate the corrosive effects of SO3 on the sampling and analysis components in the sample gas.

The NOx analyzer uses a unique N0 2 to NO converter developed by Horiba with a special carbon-group catalyst. This converter operates at approximately 190 C, assuring stable NO2 to NO reduction and providing durability and longer life.

  • The First Advanced Gas Analyzer in a Portable Case

The new Horiba PG-250 is a highly reliable and versatile gas analyzer for compliance testing of NOx, S02 , CO, C0 2 and 0 2 l housed in a single light weight and fully portable case. Unlike other portable gas analyzers that rely upon electro-chemical sensors, the Horiba PG-250 utilizes the same measurement principles as a permanently installed CEMS. These include NDIR (pneumatic) for CO and S0 2 ; NDIR (pyrosensor) for C02 ; chemiluminescence (cross flow modulation) for NOx and paramagnetic cell for 0 2 measurement. More importantly, the Horiba PG-250 meets or exceeds the regulatory requirements established by agencies such as the EPA in the U.S. and TOV in Germany for portable or backup continuous emission monitoring systems.

The Horiba PG-250 consists of a sample probe, drain separator and gas analyzer. The built-in sampling system consists of a filter, an acid mist catcher, a sampling pump, an electric cooler for removal of water vapour, solenoid valve for auto-draining, an N02 to NO converter and a scrubber to remove internally generated ozone from the instrument exhaust.

    PG-250 Portable Gas Analyzing System

Both analyzer systems makes high-sensitivity, top-precision measurements of NOx, S02 , CO, C02 and 0 2 . These affordable, space-saving, low-maintenance analyzers are ruggedly engineered long term outstanding stability. The simple operation and easy maintenance of Horiba Systems set new analysis standard.
