Java Juice & Deli718 N. 10th St. McAllen TX 956.630.3444

The first thing you’ll notice as you enter the new Java Juice & Deli on the corner of Hack-berry and 10th St. is the bright atmosphere. I mean this in every pos-sible sense. From the lighting to the smiles that greet you as you approach the counter to place your order. Rosa and Michelle Gortarez are the Mother and Daughter team that will be serving up some great sandwiches and beverages for you at Java Juice & Deli.

What can you expect to find at a place called Java Juice & Deli? Well, as the name

implies, they have great coffee’s (we tried both the hot and the ice blended), delicious smoothies (we had the strawberry), some great tasting sandwiches (the Deli Club and Texas Style Bar-B-Que Sand-wich were our choice on this visit) as well as some mouth-watering desserts (can you say Choco-Flan?).

Rosa Gortarez served up our delicious sand-wiches as Michelle whipped up various coffee’s and smoothies for us to try. Everything tasted amazing. From the sweet Bar-B-Que sauce and finely cut

beef, to the huge Deli Club, we devoured everything that crossed our path. The Choco-Flan and strawberry smoothies didn’t stand a chance against our voracious appetites. Af-ter our meal, we had a few word with Rosa and Michelle about their deli and were delighted to discover how friendly and genuinely kind hearted they really are. You can almost taste it in their food.

We will definitely be coming back to sample all their menu items like their Chicken Salad Sandwiches and Rue-ben Sandwiches. The food was delicious, the coffee was exquisite, the people were friend-ly, and are bellies were happy. Thank You Rosa & Michelle. See you again tomorrow!

Full of melody and emotion, theAudition bring a refreshing change to the sound of rock that was slowly becoming stale. Hopefully theAudition will not be the last band to bring back the trend of writing good music.

Every Month we spend our hard earned cash on Cd’s to listen to in the hopes that they will make our day easier to bare. Sometimes they do, other times they don’t. This is the column in which we sort them out for you so that you will not have to suffer through the anguish of buying a CD that sucks and regretting it for the rest of your life. Or at least the rest of the day...

The new Soulfly CD: Dark Ages came out on my Birthday (Oct 4th) and it’s their best album to date. As a matter of fact I think its probably Max’s best work since the Arise/Chaos Ad era with Sepultura.Bottom line...it’s got everything you ever liked about Sepultura...thrash riffs, inspired songs, tribal stuff, and ditches 99% of any nu metal leanings that were on previous Soulfly CD’s.Honestly Max Cavalera needs to get a Grammy for best metal album be-cause this time out he brought the complete package. It’s more dynamic than his past work in Sepultura/Soulfly/Nailbomb and makes me want to step it WAY up as a musician in general.Max...Thanks for the inspiration...againGo buy this now

MX: Your music sounds emotionally charged. What kind of message do you want your fans to take from it?

S: We write about normal stuff, mostly things we’ve experi-enced, like personal things that we go through. Things like love, pain, and suf-fering. We want our fans to know that we feel what they all feel.

MX: What are your main musical influ-ences?

S: Well anything from…Backstreet Boys (all laugh), to Gwen Stefani.

MX: Really?

S: Nah, Gwen’s just hot. Really our main influences are Kills-witch Engage, Alice In Chains…there’s really way to many to name.

MX: What about in-fluences other than musical?

S: A lot of these local bands influ-ence us a lot with their drive because they’ve been out there playing, just like us…and we ad-mire them for being out there.

MX: What sets you all apart from the rest of the bands?

S: People say its our presence on stage.

MX: What are your favorite munchies?

S: Shrimp…(all laughing)…every-thing, anything…Ra-men noodles!!!

MX: We love greasy cheesy pizza!! So what’s in the future for SOLARIUM?

S: Right now we just want to start record-ing, get a demo out there. These past couple of months its been all about the live shows. We hope to record soon, and write some new material. The shows will keep on coming though.

MX: Anything you’d like to say to the haters?

S: We’re coming for you! (all laugh)

MX: In one word, how would you describe SOLARIUM to someone who’s never heard you all?

S: Ass-kicking.

MX: ONE word. (all laugh)

S: (Laughing) Nah…Energetic. That’s probably the best word to describe us. We’d probably tell them to check us out, and let them describe us.

It’s November and Cigarette Burns is back!!! Thanks to all who gave us feedback on last month’s Top 25. Hope you enjoyed our list, and no we do not apologize for “Swept Away”.This month we have some HUGE news, starting with a $525 million dollar loan that Marvel Enter-prises secured to make their own

movies. Yes, you heard that correct, $525 million dollars. Paramount Studios will be produc-ing up to 10 fi lms starting as early as 2007. The fi rst fi lm out from Marvel in 2007 will be GHOST RIDER, starring Nicholas Cage. This fi lm is almost complete so get ready to see the spirit of vengence on the big screen.

But the big rumor going around is the Captain America will be the actual fi rst fi lm from marvel. The Star Spangled Sentinel of Liberty may make his way to our the-atres before you know it. I cast my vote for Howie Long as the Captain, Mor-gan Freeman for Gabe Jones, add Nathan Jones as Cross Bones and throw in the Red Skull and you have a nice little block-buster. From the House of Ideas to Hogwart’s School of witch-craft and wizard-

ry. On November 18 EVERYONE here at MagX will be in line waiting to watch the next installment in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter

and the Goblet of Fire. If you have not seen this preview go now to (www.gobletoffi re.com) and it will take you directly to the mov-

ies web site. I loved the third installment for it’s darker tone, but I cannot wait for this one, it looks amaz-ing. Jump one month ahead and get ready for The Chronicles of NARNIA,The Lion , the Witch, & the Wardrobe. For those of you

that have not read this series, or forgot-ten the story, grab a copy right now! Trust me, this movie is going to rock! From the Minotaurs, to the battle scenes and of course the lion Aslan!!If you are a Lord of the Rings fan you will defi nitely love The Chronicles of NARNIA. Alright we are done for this month, meet us at the movies on the 18th! You buy the popcorn and we’ll supply the sneaked in candies!!!!

I’ve never been the biggest photography enthusiast, but in conjunction with rock n roll, it has become my euphoric deliverance.

I’ve been taking pictures since high school, but never have I once received formal train-ing on photography. I’ve achieved my goals by taking the time to read, practice, and having the gift to communicate. Thanks to the simple task of networking, I got lucky enough to work with the bands I listen to on a daily basis. Somebody has to take responsi-bility to capture music’s greatest moments.

The music industry has opened many doors for me in regards to my photography, which I am very pleased for having such wonder-ful opportunities. In combination with rock photography, I am also a music promoter, freelance booking agent, webzine publisher, graphic designer, in addition to a web devel-oper.

I am not what you think I am. I have experienced more in twenty years than most people experience in a lifetime. I may be one of the only guys left with high expectations out of life, and I am going to make it with or without you.

I can remem-ber hits like TMNT, Rambo, Star Wars and who can forget The Mario Bros. Of course back then, that was the coolest thing that could have ever come our way. Now, genres and styles of video games are nothing like they were 10 year ago. At that time, no one would have been able to tell you what RPG stood for, let alone comprehend the term BFG. With RPG came Final Fantasy, Lord of the Rings and Dun-geons and Drag-ons, three great games and three great movies. I hate saying it but sometimes if the movies are great, the game doesn’t live up to its Holly-wood standards. Take for instance House of the Dead. Great game, lame movie. It had ev-erything a Video game to movie should not have. I know some can

and will argue with it but I personally enjoyed the Resi-dent Evil movies. I think they did the game right. Beau-tiful Women and good fight scenes. Recently there have been three Video game to Movie attempt that have come out or are sched-uled for release. One movie being the classic Game DOOM. It followed a bit of the Video Games story but then went off. It had the weapons, it had the action, but could have done without The Rock. I loved the first person shooter scene. Though it was a bit short, it did the movie justice.

Hello Gamers. Just want to say hello and welcome to my new column. This Column is and will be dedicated to all types of computer and video games, plus local gamers, events and so forth. I will touch on all that I know and all that I learn to keep you (the reader) Informed on all that is here and still to come. [email protected]

Just to let everyone in the gaming world know, there are a few old movies that are becoming new games.

The WarriorsYour task is to get you and your gang back to your turf after being framed for a crime.

ScarfacePlay as the big boss man Tony Montana and build his ter-rific empire that we all know from the movie. (I really hope we can change the

ending).

The GodFatherPlay as The Don and run your mob as you see fit to control the town and do all you need to stay the head mobster of all times.

And now for a taste of things to come To all HALO FansPeter Jackson (Di-rector of LOTR and King Kong)has taken the task of direct-ing the memorable first person shooter which release date and plot have not been released.

God Of War and Metal Gear Solid are currently in discus-sion in hopes of be-ing made. (Fingers Crossed)

This month we’re featuring the art of Erich Keller. His vivid murals grace the walls of several well known businesses in the Valley. Originally from Peru, Erich traveled back and forth from the US to South America picking up culture and influence from both sides of the equator. He began painting early in life, in-fluenced mainly by his heritage and by the country of Peru. His family has a large history in art going all the way back to his Grand Uncle who did art for magazines in Dallas in the 40’s and 50’s. Erich’s work ranges from simple por-traits to large detailed murals that cover entire walls or ceilings. His versatility and talent are both apparent in all his work. You can view some of his work in the Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance (McAllen), Clear Channel Radio (Weslaco), Leaps and Bounds Pediatric Clinic (McAllen), and South Texas Christian Acade-my (McAllen). Erich is also teaching art in the Texas Public School Systems. Contact him at @ 956.279.7190
