    - By Jyoti Solapurkar

(For 5 to 7 Year Old Children)

    : :

Children, there is not a single country in the whole world where the name of Mahatma Gandhi is not known. Do you know why Gandhijibecame so famous? It was because he dedicated his whole life to the service of the motherland, and service of humanity.

oday, I am going to tell you in brief, the story of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the !ation, or "a#uji, as he is affectionately called.

In the early days our country was made u# of a large number of small $rincely %ingdoms. $orbandar in Gujarat was one such $rincely

    %ingdom. Gandhij i&s father %aramchand Gandhi, #o#ularly known as %aba, was a Minister there.

%aba Gandhi was an honest, u#right man, a strict disci#linarian, and very hot tem#ered. 'is wife $utlibai was a e(tremely religious#erson. )he would not have her meal until she had worshi##ed the sun. 'ence sometimes in the rainy season, she would go hungry for

two*three days at a stretch. )he was a very loving #erson, and immensely hard*working.

o these #arents a son was born on +ctober nd, -/0. 'e was their youngest son. 'e was called Mohandas. 'e was our Gandhiji.

he strict disci#line of his father, the religious bent of mind of his mother, all influenced Gandhiji greatly. 'e was dee#ly attached to his

#arents and brothers. he values of truthfulness, honesty, integrity were instilled in him from the very beginning.1s a child he was not very brave. 'e was mortally afraid of the dark, of ghosts and s#irits, and also of snakes and scor#ions. 1t night he

would cry in fear. he maid who looked after him scolded him very often. 23ou should be ashamed of yourself2 she would say. 24hat

will you do when you grow u#?2 )he then told him that every time he was frightened he should take the name of God 5ama. Gandhiji

took her advice, and gradually he overcome his fear.

)oon it was time for him to go to school. 1s his father was in 5ajkot at that time, he attended the school there. "eing e(tremely shy, hedid not mi( with the other children. Most of the time he ke#t to himself. In the beginning he did not like some of the subjects that were

taught to him, but with encouragement from his teachers he studied them, and began to enjoy them. 6rom then onwards he took his

studies very seriously.Mohan was very shy. 1s soon as the school bell rang, he collected his books and hurried home. +ther boys chatted and sto##ed on the

way7 some to #lay, others to eat, but Mohan always went straight home. 'e was afraid that the boys might sto# him and make fun of him.+ne day, the Ins#ector of )chools, Mr. Giles, came to Mohan&s school. 'e read out five 8nglish words to the class and asked the boys to

write them down. Mohan wrote four words correctly, but he could not s#ell the fifth word 9%ettle&. )eeing Mohan&s hesitation, the teacher

made a sign behind the Ins#ector&s back that he should co#y the word from his neighbour&s slate. "ut Mohan ignored his signs. he other

boys wrote all the five words correctly7 Mohan wrote only four. 1fter the Ins#ector left, the teacher scolded him. 2I told you to co#y from

your neighbour,2 he said angrily. 2Couldn&t you even do that correctly?2 8very one laughed. 1s he went home that evening, Mohan wasnot unha##y. 'e knew he had done the right thing. 4hat made him sad was that his teacher should have asked him to cheat. 1s was the

custom in those days, when he was about -:*-; years old, he got married. 'is wife&s name was %asturba

non*vegetarian food, or drink alcohol, and he remained true to his word.

Many attem#ts were made to make Gandhiji acce#t Christianity as his religion. Gandhiji remained firm. 'owever, he studied the "ible,

Gita and Auran and came to the conclusion that the #rinci#le tenets in all religions are the same. )o whether the #erson was 'indu,

Muslim or Christian, Gandhiji felt that as long as he followed the religion #rinci#les, he attained salvation.

'e told this to all those who had tried to convert him, and remained a staunch 'indu till the very end.Gandhij i concentrated on his studies thereafter, and successfully #assed his "ar e(amination.

'e returned to India in -0-, after the com#letion of his studies.

8agerly he looked forward to meeting his mother, and giving her the good news, but he was to be sorely disa##ointed. 6or while he was

away in 8ngland, his mother had #assed away. he news of her death had been withheld from him because his brother thought he wouldbe mentally disturbed, and his studies would be affected.

    : " :

1fter Bualifying as a "arrister, he set u# his #ractice as a lawyer, in

5ajkot. 1s he did not get much work there, he came to "ombay.

8ven in "ombay he did not get any cases. 6inally, he got one case.

'e #re#ared well for it, but in court he was unable to #resent it

satisfactorily. Disa##ointed, he felt he would never make asuccessful lawyer.

ust at that time Gandhiji&s elder brother managed to get him a

case. 'e was asked to re#resent Mr. 1bdulla, a rich businessman in

)outh 1frica. 1fter much deliberation, Gandhiji agreed to acce#t

the case. 'e left his homeland and set sail for 1frica in -0.1lthough there were many Indians staying in 1frica at that time, all

the #ower was in the hands of the "ritish #eo#le. hey considered themselves su#erior, and treated the Indians and the natives in a mostinsulting manner.

Gandhiji undertook 1bdulla&s case and handled it very well. he Indians were very much im#ressed, and wanted Gandhiji to stay on in

1frica.In connection with his work, Gandhiji travelled a good deal. 'owever, he was treated very badly by the "ritish #eo#le. 4herever he

went, he had to face insults and rudeness. 1t times, he was even #hysically assaulted.

+ne day, when he was travelling from Durban to $retoria in the first class com#artment of a train, a "ritish man boarded the

com#artment. +n seeing Gandhiji, the "ritish man got furious. 'e called the 5ailway officer, and both ordered him to get out of the train.)ince Gandhiji had #urchased a first class ticket, he refused to do so. 'owever, they #aid no heed to him. Gandhiji also did not budge.

6inally the #olice were summoned. hey #ushed him out of the com#artment and threw his luggage out of the window. Gandhiji had to

s#end the whole night on the #latform.

his was only one of the many humiliating e(#eriences Gandhiji had to face.

'e had decided to return to India on the com#letion of his work in 1frica, but the #light of the Indians there disturbed him greatly. 'eresolved to stay, and fight the unjust and inhuman laws that were im#osed on them. 6or everywhere there was discrimination. here was

one set of rules for the Indians and natives, and a different set for the "ritish #eo#le.

    : # :

Gandhiji gave considerable thought to the matter. 'e realised that to fight against injustice it was vital

for the #eo#le to have unity amongst themselves. 'e tried very hard to bring about this unity. 'e

organi>ed many meetings, and made the #eo#le aware of the situation. In re#ly, the #eo#lea##ointed him as their leader, and agreed to be guided by him.

)ince all the #ower was in the hands of the 8nglish #eo#le, Gandhiji realised that to fight them it was

necessary to use an entirely different method. It was then that he thought of the novel idea of

9)atyagraha&. )atyagraha insistence on truth, a non*violent #rotest against injustice. 'is movement

aimed at fighting the many unjust laws that were im#osed on them, and for it to be successful, he was#re#ared to face all hardshi#s and obstacles.

It was no easy task. 'e suffered much humiliation, faced many #roblems, but he did not give u#.

It was during this time that a war broke out between the "ritish and the Dutch settlers in 1frica. It was

known as the "oer 4ar. Gandhiji and other Indians gave whatever hel# they could to the "ritish. he

"ritish won the war, and taking into consideration the hel# Gandhiji had rendered to them, they gavethe Indians more #rivileges. hey also agreed to abolish the unjust laws that were im#osed on them.

Gandhiji felt very ha##y that his stay in 1frica had served some useful #ur#ose. hinking that his

work was now over, he decided to return to his motherland. he #eo#le were very reluctant to let

    him go back.

hey were very keen that he should settle down in 1frica itself. 6inally Gandhiji told them that hewould go to India, but come to 1frica whenever they called him. +nly then did the #eo#le a gree to let

him go. hey gave him a grand farewell, and showed him with many e(#ensive gifts. 'owever Gandhiji

did not acce#t anything. 'e donated everything to the local organisations.

During his long stay in 1frica, Gandhiji visited India sometimes, where he met many im#ortant leaders and sought their advice. Go#al

%rishna Gokhale was one such leader who rendered assistance to Gandhiji in many ways. Gandhiji admired him tremendously, andlooked u#on him as his mentor. It was largely due to him that Gandhiji joined the mainstream of Indian #olitics.

"y the time all these develo#ments took #lace in 1frica, it was -0-;. Gandhiji had s#ent almost E years in that country. 'e returned to

India, for he had made u# his mind to fight for the freedom of India. 'e decided that he would not miss a single o##ortunity that would

hel# him in serving his country and countrymen. 1s such he toured the whole of India, and brought an awakening in the #eo#le living in

villages and towns.!orth of the Ganges, near the boundary of !e#al, was a small #lace called Cham#aranya. It was noted for its cultivation of Indigo dye.

Fnfortunately, the "ritish #lanters in Cham#aranya treated the local workers most cruelly. 4orse still, the Government #aid little heed to

the workers cries. 4ith the result that they were utterly disgusted with their em#loyers.Gandhiji heard of this and went to Cham#aranya to do something for them. 'e was unable to bear their miserable #light. 'e began a

satyagraha against the injustice done to the workers. 6inally the "ritish were com#elled to sto# their inhuman treatment of the workers.his satyagraha came to be known as the 9Cham#aranya )atyagraha&.

1fter the success of the 9Cham#aranya )atyagraha&, Gandhiji felt that he should settle down in one #lace. 'e selected a site near the

banks of the )abarmati river in Gujarat, and established his 1shram there. 'e decided that thereafter he would devote all his time to the

service of humanity, and work for the downtrodden. 'e #reached what he #racticed.

'e #icked u# the cause of the 'arijans who were treated most atrociously all over the country. 'e raised his voice against the inhumanand unjust treatment meted out to them. 'e started two news#a#ers &'arijan& and 93oung India&, and through them he e(#ressed his views

and s#read social awareness in the #eo#le.

In the meantime, all over India agitations and u#risings against the "ritish rule where on the increase. In -0E, @okmanya ilak died, and

Gandhiji became the leader of the 6reedom Movement.

Fnder his guidance, the #eo#le went on )atyagraha to fight against injustice. 'e was arrested and im#risoned many times, but that did

not deter him and his loyal followers. hey continued their f ight for freedom with even greater fervor.

Gandhiji was greatly res#ected for his sim#le living, high thinking, and fearless attitude. he "ritish too were greatly im#ressed by him,and called him for negotiations regarding India&s freedom. )ince it had been decided that the freedom struggle would not sto# until full

freedom was granted, the negotiations did not serve any #ur#ose.

arious forms of )atyagraha and Civil Disobedience movements took #lace at that time. he 9)wadeshi Movement&
