ThesecondhalfoftheyearbeganwithcompletionofthreeprogrammesofIASP-ISSPMultidisciplinaryPainManagementProgrammein�irstweekofJuly2017.WethankDrPreetiDoshi&DrSushmaBhatnagarfortakingtheleadrolesandsuccessfullyaccomplishingtheprogramme.
Thisyear the 'WorldPainAwarenessDay'was celebratedwidely across the countrybyvarious state/citythbranchesandofcourseindividualmembersonJuly9 2017.Thesuccessstorycontinues.Wewouldliketo
continueoureffortsinmakingthiseventaglobalaffair.
thWehadMid-TermmeetingofGCmembersatNewDelhion27 August2017.Itinvolvedfruitfuldiscussionsabout IAPM, SIG's, ISSPCONsoon and so forth.TheSIG's representatives spoke about the tasks theyhadcompleted by the said date andwe should be getting �irst-hand information by ISSPCON2018.As itwasmentionedbyPresidentduringlastAGBM-2017,itmighttakeayearortwoforthingstofallinplace.WearehappytonotetheenthusiasmshowbySIGteammembers.
nd,IAPMteamhadtheirGCmeetingonOctober2 2017atNewDelhi. Itwasagreatmeetingwithplentyofconstructiveideas.SoonyouwillbereceivingmoreinformationfromIAPMteamregardingtheEntry&ExitExaminations.IAPMteamhasformulatedtheirownteamsforconductionofexams,accreditationofcentres,traineeaffairs,convocation,eligibilitycriteriatobeamemberofIAPM&MCIaccreditationtonameafew.It'shearteningtonotethedevelopmentstakingplaceatafastpace.Probablyit'samatteroftimeIAPMwillcomeoutwith�lyingcolorswiththededicatedteamworkinghard,dayinanddayout.
The Grant-in-aid of different State/City Chapters have been distributed to State/City chapters who havesubmittedtheiraccountdetails,branchregistration,PANcardandbranchactivities.PleasenoteafterDecember
st, st,31 2017allbranchesgrantinaiduptoDecember31 2015willgotogeneralfundandthebranchescannotclaimthesefunds.IthasbeenapprovedinAGBMthatISSPSecretariatwillholdthefundsforamaximumoftwoyearsbeforeitgoestogeneralfund.
TheITreturnsfor�inancialyears2013-14,2014-15,2015-16havealreadybeen�iled.Currently,wehave�iledITreturnsforthe�inancialyear2016-17throughourauditor.
TheChiefEditorofIndianJournalofPain,DrKailashKotharihascontinuedthegreatjobofensuringthecontinuationoftheprintversionofourjournal.Thesecretariatisgratefultohim.WethankourtreasurerDrPVijayanandforexcellentfundmanagementofISSP,injustoneandhalfyearstimeourassetshaveincreasedbymanyfoldsduetohispersonalefforts.

Iamhappythat last6 to8monthshavebeen fullofactivities,energy and developments in ISSP. The credit goes to young,dynamicandenthusiasticworkforceofISSPandIAPM.Itwasverysatisfyingandhappyfeelingtoworkwiththem.
Manythingshappenedontrainingandeducationside,withthesupportfromIASP,industryandIAPM.ISSPhasworkedveryhardtostartfellowshipinpainmedicinealltheseyears.Thedreamhasseen reality last year. The IAPM, the one year old baby hasprogressed to a full �ledge academic body this year. Care andnourishmentbythestalwartsandacademicianshashelpedIAPMof IASP, will have representation in big way, in this congress.

Painmanagement,relievingsufferingofpatient,cannothappenwithoutaddressing“TotalPain”!ISSPmustjoinhandswithIndianAssociationofPalliativeCaretomakemedicalopioidavailableforpainrelief.ISSPwillalsocollaboratewithIAPCforintroducingPainandPalliativeCareatundergraduatestudies.ThisissueneedstobeaddressedatMCIlevel.Thesetwoorganizationscannotworkinisolation.Fortunately,wehavemanyseniorleadersandspecialistswhoareactiveinboththeorganization.Wehavestartedworkingtowardsthiscause.
WehaveprestigiousconferenceISSPCON2018inNewDelhi.LetusallcometogetherandmakeISSPshine!IamsuretheorganisingteamunderleadershipofDrJayashreeSoodhasstartedpreparationforthisscienti�ic�iesta.

INDIANACADEMYOFPAINMEDICINE
ItiswithgreatpleasureIwritethesynopsisoftheactivitiesandachievementsoftheIndianAcademyofPainMedicine–theacademyofIndianSocietyfortheStudyofPain.Theyear2017hasbeenacrossoverperiod,wheretheleadershipwaspassedonbythecommitteechairedbyDr.Gehdootothenewlyelected of�ice bearers under the leadership of Dr. Bibhukalyani Das and Dr. Pradeep Jain. Highachievementalwaystakesplacewithintheframeworkofhighexpectation,andconsiderableprogresshasbeenmadethisyeartowardsmeetingthehighexpectationsofourmembership.
From the trainees'perspective, the logbook in the formof amobile apphasbeendevelopedandsuggestionstoimproveithavebeenincorporatedwherepossible.ItisavailableonlyintheAndroidversion fornow,but efforts are alreadyunderway todevelop the iOSversion.Wehope itwill beavailable before the end of 2017. Moreover, the IAPM has developed a comprehensive TraineeQuarterly Assessment Form in order to help identify the lacunae in training aswell identify theprocessesforcontinualimprovement.Thisisnowamandatorysubmissiontobeeligibletosittheexam.
Thepathwaystothetrainingandfellowshiparenowmuchmoreclearerthanwhenwestarted2017.TheEntranceexamsforembarkingonaone-yeartraininginIAPM/ISSPaccreditedcentreisnowwellestablished.TheentranceexamthisyearisscheduledatKolkatathisDecemberandthenumberofapplicantsismorethanthatoflastyear.Threenewcentreshavebeenaccreditedthisyeartoprovidetraining towards the fellowship of IAPM: Belle Vue Clinic - Kolkata, Cheers Interventional PainManagement-AhmedabadandYashodaHospital-Hyderabad.
TheeligibilitycriteriaforsittingtheExitexamhavenowbeenbetterde�ined.TheIAPMtraineesandother trainees (from university accredited program, private fellowship & overseas training) areeligibletoappearfortheexitexam,providedtheysatisfythecriterialaidoutbytheIAPM.Similarly,seniorpainphysicianswith�iveyearsormoreofISSPmembershipandtherequisitepublicationscould,withadequaterecommendations,appearfortheExitexam.TheexitexamisscheduledatDelhiinJanuary2018.
Withregardtotheexitexam,onecouldexpectaslewofannouncementsfromIAPMwithregardtotheformatoftheexam,markingsystem,centreswhereitwouldbeheld,applicationform,guidancenotesfortheapplicationformetc.,andtheywillallbeavailableat ,inoursocialmediawww.issp-pain.orgpagesandbyemailtothemembershipfromtheISSP/IAPMheadquarters.Weverymuchlookforwardtotheconferringceremonyofthe�irstIAPMfellowsduringtheISSPCON2018.
TherearemanyotheraccomplishmentsthatarenowderigueursuchasthequickemailresponsesfromtheIAPMheadquarters,regularupdatestothewebsiteandresponsibleuseofsocialmedia.WhatwouldbesomewhatdisappointingtoourmembersistherestrictiononthenumberofcandidatesIAPMcould admit for the exit exam in January2018.This restriction is �irstly tounderstand thelogisticsofconductingtheexamsmoothlyandsecondlyduetotheoverarchingideaoffashioningawell-organisedandprestigiousexamtopass.Inothernews,theexpensesofIAPMarenowbudgetedandstreamlined,andastheTreasurerofISSPIcouldforeseeaprolongedperiodofexcellent�inancialsupportformostoftheprojectsandimprovementsthatIAPMhasinstore.TheappreciationforIAPMthathasbeenpouringinfromvariousquartershasnotonlyreinforcedthebeliefthatitisontherightpath,buthasalsoinspireditto�lyhigher.

LongliveISSP!LongliveIAPM!
TheIAPMisupandrunning.Yetthereismuchtobedoneinthenearandmediumterm.Atraineehandbook,anall-encompassingdocument,whichwillbeofusetocurrentandfuturetrainees,isanurgentneed,asitwillremoveambiguitiesanddoubtsthatmightplaguetheirmindswithregardtotraining,preparingforexamsetc.,Weshould,inaddition,providebettervalueforIAPMtraineesbythewayofexamrefreshercourses,onlineteachingmodules,mentorship,videotutorialssuchasonphysicalexamination,traineenewsletterandatraineeluncheonduringISSPCON.
Itwoulddousnoharminhavingexaminerstrainedwithrelevantworkshops,andnoneatallinhavingtheexamsstandardizedandaudited.Toconductonlineentranceexamsandincreasethenumberofsittingsoftheexitexamsareotherissuestobeconsidered.Finally,advocacyeffortstowardshavingpainmedicinerecognizedasaspecialitybytheNBE,andthemeticulousdatacollectionrequiredtosupportusinthisbidseemsaveryworthycause.ThesefutureendeavourshavebeeninthemindofgoverningcouncilmembersofISSPandIAPM;anditisonlyamatteroftimebeforetheyallcometofruition.
Persistenceisthetwinsisterofexcellence.Oneisamatterofqualityandtheotheramatteroftime.Themid-termgoverningcouncilmeetingoftheISSPandthesubsequent�irstevermid-termmeetingofthegoverningcouncilofIAPMhaveaimedforbothpersistenceandexcellence.Combiningthestewardshipofexperiencedseniorcolleagueswiththeenthusiasmoftheyoungerbrigade,variouscommitteessuchastheexaminationcommittee,traineeaffairscommitteeandaccreditationcommitteehavebeenconstituted.Themembersof the various committeeshavebeenpushing the constructive agendaharderthaneverresultingintheIAPMnegotiatingthepistecon�identlycomparedwiththenurseryslopesoflastyear.WithourPast-PresidentstoocomingonboardasHonoraryIAPMfellows,thefuturelooksresult-oriented,brightandexciting.

thManagement(EPM)LiteProgrammefor100undergraduatemedicalstudentson7 October2017(SMARC2017).ThiswaspartoftheUndergraduateNationalConferencebeingheldatsameinstitutionforthirdyearinsuccession.Wecongratulatethemforconductingthreetimesinarow.Morethan600studentsfrom13medicalcollegeswereattendingthiseventasdelegates.Therewereanother5workshopspertainingtoBLS/ACLS,Radiology,SuturingSkills,Orthopedictrickssoonandsoforth

TheDeanofinstitution(KIMS)DrKameswarRao(PastPresidentofISSP)expressedthattheworkshopwasoversubscribed,theorganizingteamhadtoughtimeinlimitingworkshopdelegates.TheEPMprogrammeishappeninginmorethan45countriesandthecerti�icateisvalidacrossallthesecountriesspreadovertheworld.The programme consisted of pretest, interactive sessions, group discussions, posttest, feedback andcerti�ication.WiththeoverwhelmingresponsereceivedeveryyeartheDeanresolvedthatEPMLiteprogrammewillbeapermanentfeatureofthisconference.

TheChandigarhChapter of ISSP conducted aCMEon11.11.2017at theGovernmentMedical College andHospital(GMCH),Chandigarh.TheThemeoftheCMEwas:“Walkingtogetherhandinhand–painandpalliativecare.”

Withincreasinglifeexpectancyandadvancesinmedicine,moreandmorepersonswithseriouslife-threateningdiseasesneedingpalliativecarearelivinglonger.Painisprobablythemostcommonandmostdistressingofallthesymptomsinpalliativecare.Attimes,excruciatingandrelentlesspainbecomesamoreimportantpressingissuethanthefearofdeathitself.Infact,relievingthepaincaneasethedeathsothatthepersoncanatleastpassawayinpeace.
Theeminentspeakers,chairpersonsandpanelistssharedtheirknowledgeandexpertisesothatthebuddingdoctorsoftomorrowcantreattheirpatientsinpainwithadequateknowledge,skillsandwitharespectfulattitude. The speakers and panelists consisted of anaesthesiologists, pain physicians, surgeon andradiotherapistfromPostgraduateInstituteofMedicalEducation&Research(PGIMER)Chandigarh,GMCH,andtheprivatesector.Dr.JeetinderMakkarspokeonopioidsinnon-cancerpain.DrAKDalalandDrSushmitaGhoshal talked on palliative oncosurgery and palliative radiotherapy, respectively. Dr Dheeraj Kapoordeliberatedonthesensitivetopicofeuthanasiainthecontextofpainandpalliativecare.DrMinniAroradealtwithhospicecare.
In addition to the didactic lectures, therewere two lively “Pro-Con” sessions. The �irst onewas “IsWHOanalgesic ladder step 2 still valid for palliative painmanagement?” and the second one on “Opening thePandora'sBox:Canopioidsactuallycausecancerprogression?Anddoesitmatter?”TheCMEendedwithapracticallyorientedpanelmoderatedbyDr.SukanyaMitrawiththetheme:“Oldlampsfornewones?Opioidsatthesunset!”usingareal-lifecasevignetteandspeci�icmanagementrelatedquestions.
Theprogrammewaswellattendedandlefttheinteractiveaudiencewithalastingimpressionoftheimportanceandtimelinessofthistheme.

Oncompletionoftraining,thecandidateshouldbeabletoopenapainclinicorservetheinstituteforpropagationofpainwork.
