£1.2m grant for diocese-wide
plans supporting growth
Southwell & Nottingham
Diocese has been granted
£1.2m from a national
strategic development fund
established by the Church
Commissioners.
The ongoing mission of the
diocese through its 305 churches
is sustained through the generous
giving of church congregations,
as well as careful management of
the diocese’s assets. The grant
from the Church Commissioners,
which is spread over five years,
will help to enable the diocese to
support a range of new
opportunities related to its
strategic focus in ‘Growing
Disciples – wider, younger and
deeper’.
This will include developing
‘Resource Churches’ around the
diocese that will be equipped to
help plant or graft new
worshipping communities
reaching out to many more of the
1.2m people who live in the
diocese.
The funding will also help with
establishing a Younger
Leadership College that will train
and commission 1,000 younger
leaders (age 15-18) over the next
seven years. Andy Wolfe,
presently Vice Principal at
Nottingham Emmanuel School,
was recently appointed to lead
this initiative as Dean of the new
College.
A new city centre Resource
Church in Nottingham will also
receive some ‘seed-corn’ funding,
particularly towards equipping a

for the visionary approach taken
by the Church Commissioners in
supporting real growth across the
Church of England. I am clear
that there is nothing better
anyone can do with their life
than be a follower of Jesus
Christ.
“Right now, for many, there is a
sense of living in a time of
uncertainty, yet there is immense
opportunity for congregations to
make an even bigger difference
helping to create strong
communities in which everyone
can flourish. This additional
funding will help us to develop
our core ministry in parishes
alongside some innovative new
projects.”
The £1.2m is part of £7.8m
awarded to projects in nine
dioceses by the Church
Commissioners and
Archbishops’ Council as part of
the Church’s Renewal & Reform
programme, focused on church
vitality and growth in a wide
range of communities.
The Diocese has launched an Intern Programme designed for 18
to 25-year-olds who are seeking to grow as disciples of Christ,
particularly in the area of leadership.
It is an integral part of the commitment of the Diocesan vision to
‘Commission 1,000 younger leaders (15-30) inspired and equipped to
serve God’s purposes in the world, growing churches, shaping culture
and transforming society’.
The one-year programme will support the development of a range of
leadership skills that are relevant to the work place and wider society,
with a particular focus on nurturing the vocation of those considering
ordained ministry.
The interns will help to further the mission and charitable objectives
of the Diocese by working within the framework of the Younger
Leadership College founded by the Bishop of Southwell &
Nottingham.
The highest priority will be developing personal discipleship and
leadership, through bible teaching and prayer, as well as by living and
working alongside other Christian leaders. Interns will meet one
morning a week for teaching, prayer and fellowship facilitated by the
Dean of the Younger Leadership College, supported by the Bishops,
other senior diocesan staff and leadership mentors.
The interns will, in turn, help to develop younger leaders through
partnership work in the Diocese’s secondary schools, work alongside
the Bishops and other senior colleagues in support of a range of
ministry opportunities.
Each intern will spend three and a half days a week in a church or
chaplaincy placement supervised by an experienced leader.
The programme will offer participants experience in the Church’s
ministry; understanding of the challenges and opportunities of
mission and evangelism in different contexts and traditions:
development of skills and competencies in leadership, evangelism,
teaching and pastoral care.
Interns will be provided with accommodation and will receive a
subsistence allowance of £80 per week which will be paid monthly.

Government roof
repair grants for five
of our churches
Five churches in Southwell &
Nottingham Diocese will benefit
from a government grant for roof
repairs.
Nearly 300 Church of England
parishes are to receive grants for
urgent repairs to their church
roofs in the second round of
awards from the Listed Places of
Worship Roof Repair Fund. The
churches receiving funds in our
diocese are: All Saints Church,
Coddington; St Wilfrid’s Church,
North Muskham; Holy Trinity
Church, Wysall; St Helen’s
Church, Selston and St Peter’s
Church, Clayworth.
Awards between £10,000 and
£100,000 have been offered
towards the urgent repair of roofs,
gutters and drains, failure of
which is the principal cause of
decay in historic churches.
In total, 401 listed places of
worship will benefit from awards
from the £25 million funding
package given by the Treasury.
This follows the 501 awards
announced in the first round in
Spring 2015.
The Revd Karen Rooms,
Vicar of St Ann’s with
Emmanuel and Area Dean
for Nottingham South, has been
appointed Canon Missioner of
Leicester Cathedral and Transition
Priest in the city’s Holy Spirit
Team.
Her new role will involve
developing the ministries of these
city centre parishes, connecting
with the communities and building
the congregations.
Also as a Residentiary Canon at the
Cathedral, Karen will oversee and help to develop the social outreach
ministry with asylum seekers, homeless people and other vulnerable
groups.
The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul Williams,
said: “We are immensely thankful for Karen’s strategic leadership in
this diocese as Vicar of St Ann’s with Emmanuel, Nottingham, Area
Dean of Nottingham South and a member of Bishop’s Council. Karen
has an engaging vision for urban ministry and the Church’s mission in
the transformation of society.
“In this she has made a substantial contribution to developing the
Church’s presence, helping to renew communities across the city,
including through the work of Nottingham Citizens. I know she will
bring wisdom, energy and passion to this new role as Canon
Missioner and City Centre Transition Priest in Leicester.”
Karen, who helped to set up Nottingham Citizens and co-chairs the
national Citizens UK Council, said: “I look forward to joining the
parish and cathedral teams and to building relationships and working
with different communities for the common good in Leicester. I am
excited by the opportunities we share to explore worship, mission and
justice and make a difference in the city.”
Karen is married to Nigel who is also a priest and they have two adult
sons, Joe and Ally.

Guild we are responsible for the
ministry of welcome to all
visitors to our magnificent
church .Visitors to the Minster
come from all over the world.
They come for many reasons,
some because it is a place of
prayer,others because they are
church or cathedral enthusiasts,
and yet others simply to look
around. Helping people to
understand the Minster as a
building and a church is one of
the satisfactions of being a
Steward.
Stewards come from all parts of
the Diocese and further afield.
They give a commitment to
being responsible for their
allotted duty periods. Most of all
they enjoy meeting and greeting
people from all walks of life and
be capable of developing a
rapport with visitors to our
beautiful Minster .

Would you value a chance to review your present
programme, share ideas and further develop skills in
this area of ministry?
Loving for Life is a Mothers' Union training programme for
facilitators preparing couples for marriage. As part of the training you
will be able to view and evaluate a range of resources on the market
for use in marriage preparation, to help you to select and adapt
resources for your individual context.

As part of the partnership
between Southwell &
Nottingham and the
Diocese of Jerusalem, St
Leonard’s Wollaton is developing
a link with St Andrew’s Anglican
Episcopal Church in Ramallah. In
June 2015 Father Fadi Diab, his
wife Ruba, and Marianne, a
member of the church, visited
Wollaton. Last month Carol
Charmbury and I made a return
visit. The timing meant we were
able to celebrate Easter for a
second time, as the churches there
follow the Orthodox calendar.
We experienced the generous
hospitality for which the people
of the Middle East are known; we
were continually presented with
amazing meals by people who
were genuinely pleased to have us
with them.
Carol and I had the opportunity to
worship through Holy Week and
Easter with the people of St
Andrew’s and other Christian
communities of Ramallah,
including taking part in a
wonderful procession on Easter
Saturday. The clergy of the
various churches (Coptic
Orthodox, Maronite Catholic,
Roman Catholic, Lutheran and
Anglican), accompanied by the
Muslim Governor of Ramallah,
followed 17 Scout marching
bands into the centre of Ramallah.
There we waited for the flame
carried from the Church of the
Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
Lanterns were lit from the flame
and carried back to churches to be
used in Easter Day celebrations.
On Easter Sunday it was a
tremendous joy to be with
Christians in the West Bank
making the Easter acclamation,
“Alleluia, Christ is risen!”
Christian leaders later met
President Mahmoud Abbas who
was keen to say that Muslims,
Christians and Jews had to find
ways of living together.
The Easter Saturday procession
was characterised by joy and
hope in a very volatile context.
We were made aware of this
when a young Palestinian woman
and her 16-year-old brother were
shot dead at the Qalandiyah
checkpoint we had used to cross
into the West Bank. (Palestinians
cannot move freely around the
country and have to endure
repeated Israeli checkpoints,
sometimes being forced to queue
for hours to move in and out of
the West Bank.)
The situation the Palestinians face
is full of injustice and it is
important to note that many
Israelis recognise this. However,
security fears and the political
climate mean the journey towards
a more just future remains
immensely difficult.
But our visit also highlighted how
important it is to visit the people
living in Palestine to reassure
them that they are not forgotten.
Carol and I will continue to
remember the time we shared
with some wonderful people who,
despite all they face, continue to
be joyful and hopeful.

Growing Disciples Training for Ministry & Mission
Ecclesiastical has once again
opened its annual Ministry
Bursary Awards for entries.
The awards are open to all
clergy in Anglican Christian
faiths and aim to provide
financial support to members of
the clergy for sabbatical
activities including pilgrimages,
study visits, spiritual retreats and
the pursuit of lifelong dreams in
2017.
Applications are now open for
entries for sabbaticals taking
place in 2017.
Judging of the applications will
take place in November and
awards will be made during
December 2016.

Exploring Your Calling
This weekend will help you to
explore God's calling on your life.
It provides an excellent opportunity
to meet other Christians who sense
God calling them into new areas of
ministry and is led by mature
Christians who have experience of
helping people discern God's call
on their lives.
The course leader is Canon Dr
Christina Baxter who is the former
Principal of St John's College,
having taught Christian doctrine
there since 1979. She has followed
her calling into ministry nationally
and internationally. Christina is passionate about helping individual
Christians to discover their vocation and enabling them to follow it
through.

The Big E day, the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham annual
training day for those involved in children and youth ministry, is
all about growing disciples this year. Taking place on Saturday
8th October at Southwell Minster School, the day will bring delegates
together for worship, resourcing, and training to support their ministry.
The choice of nearly 30 different workshop titles has something for
everyone as the day focuses on growing disciples through youth,
children and family work. We will be growing younger with input on
working with young children, developing faith, and under 5’s ministry.
We will look at growing deeper through youth and children’s resources
and initiatives to help establish and deepen faith in the young. And we
will be growing wider, considering evangelism and mission through
schools, special events, holiday clubs and all-age worship. All this, along with practical sessions on
materials to use, puppets, craft ideas, starting out in children’s work, developing teams, and plenty more
makes this a day not to be missed. People from all Christian churches are welcome to join in with us as we
seek to grow disciples together.
Nick Harding, Children’s Ministry Adviser, said ‘We are already excited about this special day, and the
privilege of working with 200 delegates from a huge range of churches. We want to see the church growing
disciples who are young, committed, and who can share the Gospel themselves, and this day will support
all the great work that takes place week-in, week-out with families, young people and children around
Nottinghamshire and beyond.’
This year Big E Day does not clash with half term holidays and is a slightly shorter day (9.30-2.45), so
please encourage as many people as possible to come from your church and churches around you – we look

BIG E TRAINING EVENT 2016

THE BIG E TRAINING DAY…..is aimed at everyone who works with children or young people, be they new or experienced. There’s a choice of workshops covering important areas of work with children and young people, and everyone will be able to choose three. All bookings by Friday 23 September 2016. There will also be a Market Place with a Bookstall (the Cathedral Shop), resources available to borrow from the Diocesan Resource Centre and displays from other agencies working with children and young people.
THE WORKSHOP LEADERS ….. are a range of people with experience and expertise in their areas. Some work nationally or regionally for Christian agencies, while others work week-in, week-out with children and young people in their local church.
THE WORKSHOPS ….. cover a range of Big E basics to help, encourage and enthuse you. You will need to choose three workshops – one from each session. Some workshops have limited numbers, so early booking is advised. We will try to ensure you are given your first choice for each session but the online booking form (or paper booking form) asks you to select a second choice workshop too. THE COST….. at £10 per delegate includes LUNCH, drinks and biscuits. Make sure that you bring as many people from your church as possible, and share all that you learn after the event with your church. Many churches are willing to pay or help with the cost of the day, so please ask them! Payment must be received before the event.

Growing Disciples in our ParishesAutumn vision evenings for PCCs
An evening for PCCs with incumbents to come together
and explore the diocesan vision for ‘Growing Disciples
– wider, younger, deeper’, with a particular focus on
supporting PCCs as they review their own local priorities
and plans this autumn, looking to 2017 and beyond.
The evenings will include stories of how churches from
around the diocese have already been growing new
disciples in their own contexts, as well as pointing to a
variety of helpful resources that parishes may like to
consider in their further planning. Bishop Paul and others will
share more about the wider diocesan priorities for developing
‘resource’ churches, new worshipping communities as well as
growing younger leaders.
If you are not able to attend the evening linked to your deanery you are most welcome to
join in one of the other evenings.

Welcome to Understanding Christianity The Church of England Central Education Office (formerly the National Society) has joined forces with RE today to produce a comprehensive package of resources and accompanying CPD called Understanding Christianity. It is a fantastic, high quality resource to support the teaching of RE and has been developed to specifically address some of the concerns raised in recent HMI reports on the teaching of RE. The package aims to provide pupils and students with a coherent understanding of Christian belief and practice from Foundation Stage to the end of Key- Stage 3. The Diocese will be launching Understanding Christianity, with input from Bishop Paul, at Holy Trinity Church, Southwell, NG25 0LD http://www.holytrinitysouthwell.co.uk/how-to-find-us/ on Thursday 29th September, from 9.15am to 12.00 midday. We are inviting headteachers, Chairs of Governors, RE Co-ordinators and ex-officio governors from our church schools and other clergy who are interested and who have links with a community school in their parish, as the materials are suitable for all schools. Our hope is that all church schools across the diocese will adopt the use of these resources and take advantage of the accompanying training. Their production has been generously supported by a number of sponsors in order that they can be accessed by as many schools as possible and they therefore represent excellent value for money. Training for church schools will commence on 29th September in the afternoon. We would love you to come along to the launch whether you are just interested in the materials or you are part of the course. Modules of training for community schools will be repeated at a later date. Those RE co-ordinators taking the course modules should attend both the launch (which will include the first module) at Holy Trinity Church, and the next two modules which will take place later on the same day at Jubilee House. Following this day there will be a series of half-day sessions spread through the rest of the academic year at which the remaining modules will be introduced, along with opportunities to feedback on use of the previous modules, thus ensuring a quality CPD experience for RE Co-ordinators spread throughout the year. Whilst a representative from each school signing up to the course must attend every session, it does not necessarily need to be the same person on each occasion. The cost of the Understanding Christianity course will be £85, which includes resources, access to the website plus the equivalent of three days training.
