ما هو برنامج المقهى العلمي؟

المقهى العلمي هو عبارة عن جلسة حوارية لمناقشة عدد من الموضوعات العلمية المهمة، حيث يعقد لقاء غير رسمي مرة كل

شهر في جو يسوده الود والمرح، ويعتبر المقهى فرصة لتجمع عدد من الأشخاص للتعارف فيما بينهم ومناقشة عدد من الموضوعات

العلمية، حيث إن الجميع مرحب به للحضور والاستمتاع بالنقاش الشيق الذي تتخلله وجبة شهية مجانية.

يشارك في المقهى العلمي عادة كل من لديهم اهتمام بالموضوعات العلمية، ولم تسنح لهم الفرصة لمناقشة وجهات نظرهم وتساؤلاتهم. ولا يتطلب من المتحدثين امتلاك خبرة أو معرفة

علمية، فالجميع مرحب به للمشاركة.

يبدأ برنامج الملتقى بشرب القهوة وتناول وجبة خفيفة، ثم يقوم المحاضر بتقديم كلمة بسيطة، حيث إنه بإمكان الحضور أن يوجهوا أسئلتهم بكل أريحية وبدون أي إحراج، فهي جلسة حوارية عامة.

What is the OAPGRC Science Café?

The OAPGRC Science Café is a forum for the discussion of important and interesting scientific issues. We meet on a monthly basis and the sessions are informal, relaxed, fun and accessible. It’s an opportunity to get together with old and new friends in a relaxed atmosphere and discuss cool

scientific topics. It’s open to everyone and completely free. We’ll even feed you.

Who comes along to the Science Café?

Our audience consist of people who are interested in science but generally never have the opportunity to discuss their views with, and ask questions of, someone in the know. No scientific knowledge is assumed by the Science Café panellists, so anyone can come along and participate.

What normally happens at the Science Café?

Well, we generally start with a coffee and something to eat, then the panellists introduce the topic and talk about it. It’s not a lecture, so anyone can ask a question, and we particularly like it when

someone from the audience says: “This might sound like a silly question, but…” These are the questions we like and encourage. In fact, they’re generally the best type.

Because COVID-19 means you can’t come to us for our OAPGRC Science Café Program, we’re making

arrangements to bring our discussions to you! Watch this space for details of Science Café @ Home, a

livestream for us to continue our conversation with you on all things genetic resources.

كذلــك مناقشــة موضــوع صــون البيئــة كأحــد أهــم عناصــر الاســتدامة.Deep Rooted Value: Oman’s Medicinal PlantsDespite its arid climate, Oman has an abundance of unique domesticated and wild plant species - crops, herbs, grasses, shrubs, plants and trees - many of them are threatened and many have medicinal properties. In fact, over the past few years we have seen a dramatic resurgence in interest in medicinal plants for their potential to yield useful drugs. And with the increase in global consumer demand for products labeled as ‘natural’, this trend is fully expected to continue.

According to the International Council for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (ICMAP), medicinal plants constitute a US$60bn industry globally with demand currently growing at 8 - 10% annually. This offers Oman with its treasure chest of medicinal plant resources that are more than 440 species, significant commercial opportunities. Our farmers, entrepreneurs and pharmaceutical companies could all gain from the Sultanate’s reserves of indigenous medicinal plants.

Join us at this Science Café and find out about the plants that hold promise for our health and well-being. We’ll be discussing too how these natural assets can be translated into long-term economic benefit for Oman, looking at research that is being done on them and talking to entrepreneurs and businesses who are already developing new plant-based medicinal products. And of course, the conservation of these valuable natural assets is sure to be a topic of conversation during the evening.

Camels: Ancient Traditions, Modern Opportunities Camels have for generations fed and transported Omanis, they’re very much a part of the sultanate’s traditions and heritage. But it’s time now to take a fresh look at this Omani cultural icon and consider the modern opportunities it presents for our ambitious business community.

Tests have shown camel milk to have less than half the fat and 40% of the cholesterol of cows’ milk as well as three times the vitamin C. It can be consumed by diabetics as well as those who are lactose intolerant and tests show it can even ease food allergies. And it isn’t just milk, there’s demand for camel meat, cheese, yoghurt, chocolate and baby powder. With 268,000 camels in Oman and a potential market of 200 million consumers just in the Arab world, camel farming has the potential to attract investment and generate jobs.

As we sip our coffee at this Science Café, we’ll be looking into these opportunities and more besides as we explore how our much loved camels can transport savvy entrepreneurs to a prosperous future.

Animal Focus: We Are What We Eat?The number of humans on the planet is growing and to accommodate our need for food and shelter we’re urbanising areas that were previously uninhabited. As a result, more people are living in closer contact with wild and domestic animals, animals that have long played an important role in our lives - for food, fiber, livelihood, travel, sport and companionship. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic has focused attention on this new human-animal ecosystem – and on the connections between the health of people, the health of animals and our shared environment.

In this highly topical OAPGRC Science Café we’ll be exploring the factors influencing the interactions between people, animals and the environment and discussing how the health of our animals, and livestock in particular, impacts on our own health.

Tiny Organisms, Big Issues: Industrial Microbiology and Future BioindustriesThe use of micro-organisms in industry is nothing new - they have a well-established place, for example, in the production of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, construction materials and food. In fact, for thousands of years humankind has used microbes - yeasts, moulds and bacteria - to make things like bread, yoghurt and cheese, as well as fermented fish, meat and vegetables.

In recent years though biotechnology has moved rapidly as unprecedented progress in molecular biology research has supplied new enabling technologies. This has opened up new and exciting possibilities for industry in sectors such as chemicals, textiles, automotive, electronics and, crucially, energy.

Marine Research: From Raw Data to Real World ApplicationsFrom dolphins, turtles and tuna to corals, seaweed and much, much more, Oman’s coastal waters are rich in marine life. The fish that swim in our seas have fed us for generations and provided livelihoods for many. Immensely beautiful, this underwater world fascinates, attracting visitors and tourists. It is a source of interest too to scientists who have painstakingly gathered information on our aquatic plants and creatures, analysed samples, extracted DNA and painstakingly built databases.

In this OAPGRC Science Café we’ll be looking at how this raw data is being put to work. We’ll be exploring how, for example, samples of sponges, algae, soft corals, mangrove tree and sea cucumbers from seawater at Marina Bandar Al Rowdha and Bandar Al Khayran are being screened for antibacterial and anticancer activities and showing promising results. We’ll be talking to the scientists involved in this exciting research and getting updates on the progress of their work. And we’ll be taking a deep dive into how these exciting developments might be translated into medicines, treatments and therapies and finding out what this might mean for Oman and its economic progress.

Are Microbes Set to Revolutionize Agriculture?Thanks to advancements in DNA sequencing and machine learning, scientists are able to single out microbes that can be beneficial to the way we grow food. In fact, microbes can be utilized to impact all sorts of common crop stressors, such as water stress, salinity, nutrient deficiency, and pest and disease susceptibility. This means that microbial technology, once it is applied to farming and agricultural systems, has the potential to dramatically reduce the use of chemical fertilisers and eliminate the much of the chemical insecticides and pesticides currently used. In short, it’ll help farmers harness nature to feed the world in a sustainable way.

Farming Gets Smart The roots of technology in agriculture, the world’s oldest industry, run deep - from the invention of the plough in ancient Egypt and the first tractor at the beginning of the twentieth century to the introduction of the first herbicides in the 1940s and the first high-yielding cereal seeds, chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the 1960s.

Today, the new tool our farmers are using is their smart phone! Apps are already helping with planning the best time for planting and they’re being used for soil analysis, pest control, irrigation, even to control autonomous vehicles as they harvest produce. In fact, in the next few years, the use of new technologies in agriculture is expected to take off around the world with the market for agricultural drones alone expected to reach US$5.19bn by 2025.
