Jay Charles Stuart has been selected to head up the 2019 Peach Days Parade as grand marshal. A man of many hats over the years, Stuart is donning one of his favorites to ride horseback as he leads the annual procession on Main Street. Expected to accompa-ny him in a historic buggy alongside will be his wife of 54 years, Marcia, and several grandchildren. Jay and Marcia Stuart have only missed this parade twice in their lives—both times due to mission service (Nauvoo and Ukraine) for their church. Jay Stuart is honored—but a bit surprised, with so many great people to choose from in the community—to be named as grand marshal of the pa-rade. Stuart was born in Logan, Utah, but his family moved to Brigham City after World War II when he was two years old. Marcia was born in Brigham City to a family that traces their roots to the city's founders. Stuart attended Lincoln Elementary, Box Elder Ju-nior High, and Box Elder High schools. He was high-ly regarded in his class and served as the student body president during his senior year. One comment in his year-book claimed: “Stuart is a wonderful fellow. He is so grown-up and business-like when it comes to the prob-lems of our student body; and yet, he is always so much fun

to be around. Stuart is sincere, and one knows he means the things he says. With his big, sunny smile and twinkling, winking eyes, Stuart will al-ways be one of our favorite people.” Stuart also was an outstanding athlete, garner-ing all-state honors in basket-ball. To say the Stuarts are vested in the city is an un-derstatement. And all though they have certainly traveled the world, the Stuarts are most at home exactly where they have resided the past 45 years—in their home on 500 West in Brigham City. In those years, the city has grown to touch and then sur-round what used to be a ru-ral home. The home and its family of six children and 22 grandchildren overflows with the memories of life, love, and togetherness. Though moder-ately spread-out now, most of the grandchildren will be in attendance to see their grand-father honored by his home-town for his years of service in the community. After receiving his teach-ing degree, Stuart made a ca-reer in education. Throughout his career, he continued his own education and received his doctorate from Brigham Young University. Stuart spent 35 years as a teacher, coach, vice princi-pal, and principal at Lakeview Elementary, Box Elder Junior High School, and Box Elder High School. He also found time to serve his church locally as a bish-op, a member of a stake pres-idency, a patriarch, a member of a temple presidency (Og-

den), and a temple president (Brigham City). Stuart also offered civic service in the form of mem-bership in the Kiwanis Club, where he served as liaison between the community and schools. When a group of citizens decided to start a new tradi-

tion of a live Nativity, it was the Stuart family that offered to host the annual event. Over the years another hobby occupied Stuart’s time: horses. And with the stock comes the chores: haying, and irrigation. But whatever he does, Stuart Stuart does with an ever-present smile.

Called by many a "ray of light,” the Brigham City, Utah Junior Peach Days Grand Marshal is 8-year-old Brynn Vaughn, the daughter of Ryan and Alisha Vaughn of Perry. Brynn will be attending 3rd grade at Three Mile Creek Elementary. Stories of her positive and happy attitude, with great empathy for those who face any type of difficulty in life, were shared by family, friends, neighbors, teachers, and her principal. Brynn loves to share her drawings, little notes, and small gifts. Doctors discovered a large tumor along Brynn’s optical nerve located in the middle of her brain called the chiasm, and another in the frontal lobe in July 2018. These tumors were considered inopera-ble. Her conditions are considered chro-mosonal mutations which occurred be-fore birth. While visiting a doctor, spots on her body accompanied with head-aches, lead to this startling diagnosis. The MRI also showed a defect in her brain called Chiari Malformation, which restricts spinal fluid to flow from the brain to the spine. This results in clotting or cysts in the spinal cord. Because her tumors have more than doubled in size since they were discovered, Brynn has to travel weekly to Primary Children’s Med-ical Center to receive chemotherapy. She has little vision in her right eye, and her left eye vision also has been affected. Headaches are common with both these conditions. Decompression surgery is the course of action for the spinal issue but is sepa-rate from the optical tumors. Brynn is the youngest of four girls. She loves Ramen soup. Favorite foods al-so include French dip sandwiches and Ricardo’s chicken enchiladas. Bring on gold and silver for this girl’s favorite col-ors. Music of all genres intrigues this 3rd grader. She walks around the house with

the family’s “Alexa” rattling off song af-ter song to dance or sing to. Older folks seem to be easier for Brynn to relate to rather than peers of her own age. She does consider her family to be her best friends. The Todd Morrison Alumni Tourna-ment of 2019 named Brynn their hon-oree. It was noted that “she is a feisty, spunky, loving, empathetic, spirited, tat-tle-telling busybody that at times is quite a handful” according to her parents. She is a girl on fire! “Brynn always finds ways to make people smile” and added that she is a joy in their life and family, “she is our little bean.”

Giving special gifts to teachers and staff at her school was very appreciat-ed. She also enjoys gymnastics, softball, piano, bowling, riding her razor scoot-er, golf cart rides around the neighbor-hood, crafts, drawing, learning Spanish, and swimming. Swimming lessons were a favorite, especially when she could try swimming at Lake Tahoe with her cousins. Brynn Vaughn loves life! She spar-kles and shines with strength, positive attitude, and empathy, even when she is feeling sick and discouraged. Her posi-tive example has been a lighthouse of hope for all who encounter this “ray of light.”

15 set to challenge for crown This year’s Peach Queen Pageant, Thurs-day, Sept. 5, 6 p.m. at Box Elder High School, 380 S. 600 West, will feature 15 young women seeking the contest's scholarship and a chance to better the world through their ser-vice platforms. Peach Queen Pageant tickets cost $10 each and are available at the Box El-der Chamber Office, 6 N. Main Street, Brigham City. Emcees for this year’s pageant are reign-ing Peach Queen, Amelia Kohl, and Box Elder High School teacher, Patrick Parker. Amelia Kohl was born in Pocatello, Idaho, the sec-ond oldest of four girls. She recently graduated from Box Elder High School, where she was a proud mem-ber of the Rockettes. She served as the Senator of Service in student government and as a peer tutor for many years. Amelia spends her summers working as a life-guard, swim teacher, and manager at the Brigham City Community Pool and loves her job. She spent part of the summer in Lesvos, Greece, teaching Eng-lish and art to children living in refugee camps. The experience allowed her to connect with a new pop-ulation, and the world's refugees now hold a special place in her heart. She will focus her career in humanitarian work helping them. She is majoring in international stud-ies, minoring in linguistics, and plans to travel around the world to refugee camps. She is pursuing her education at Dixie State University this fall. Patrick Parker is an Ogden, Utah, native who graduated from Bonneville High School and later from Weber State University with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. He earned a master’s degree in infor-mation technology learning systems from Utah State University. He currently teaches math, (most proudly AP Cal-culus) at Box Elder High School, where he has done so for 16 years. He enjoys teaching and watching students learn, but doesn’t enjoy getting older much. He is the proud father of five wonderful children, and looks forward to spending the rest of his career as an educator entertaining, and teaching along the way.

2019 Peach Queen Pageant

Reigning Peach Queen Amelia Kohl will join Patrick Parker as emcee of this year's pageant.

The Contestants

Sadie Paige Walker, daughter of Mark and Cathi Walker, is a homegrown “Brigham City girl,” with a love for peaches and all things Brigham City, and is proud to represent some of the stand-out values of this com-munity. She is the youngest in an all-girl family, and consid-ers her three older sisters her built-in best friends. Her most cherished relationships are with her six adoring nieces and nephews: Charlotte, Lane, Wesley, Emme, Boston, and Lu-cy, who are all proudly cheer-ing on their favorite “Aunt Sadie” in her Peach Queen pur-suit. Sadie was a member of the Box Elder High School drill team and cheer-leading squad. She served as cheer team social captain, and drill leader. She was honored to be selected and named a member of the 5A All-State Drill Team as well as All-Region. Sadie has a passion for fashion, and all things beauty. She is currently enrolled at Taylor Andrews Academy of Hair Design, and looks forward to using her talents to make other women feel their very best. Her personal mantra is “Because Nice Matters,” a phrase often quoted by her mom. She strives to see the best in people, and believes in the pow-er of a sincere smile and genuine compliment. Sadie’s service platform is “To Your Face: Helping Young Women Rec-ognize Their Real Worth in Real Life.” Through this platform, she hopes to motivate and inspire other girls to seek validation away from the screen, and recognize the power and importance of face-to-face communication and relationships. Sadie is sponsored by Hansen Motor Company.

Rachel Taylor, daughter of Mathew and Vicky Taylor, loves hors-es. She has also had many opportunities to work with, and come to love, special needs individuals. She believes that special needs children can be greatly blessed by a bond with animals, and particularly horses. These ex-periences have made Rachel’s platform seem natural: “Healing Through Hearts, Hands, And Hoofbeats.” By using the Box Elder County 4-H as an avenue, she would like to tai-lor a program to provide therapeutic experiences to special needs chil-dren, using horses and other animals, where they can: 1. Learn about the care and needs of animals, 2. Have close contact experiences with the animals, and

3. Make friends through mentorship from 4-H members in the county. Rachel was born and raised in Brigham City, the oldest of four kids, and lives on a horse farm just north of town. Rachel is a se-nior at Box Elder High School and has been actively involved in Fu-ture Farmers of Ameri-ca. She loves spending time outdoors, espe-cially with her hors-es. She was very close to her grandfather who passed away four years ago, and she continues to enjoy the cabin he built in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, with her family. Rachel hopes to become involved in opportunities at school this year, including sports and theatre. She plans to finish her vet-erinary technician certificate this year and go on to pursue a de-gree in veterinary sciences, after serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rachel is sponsored by Besst Realty – Andy Berchtold.

Leah Brook Larsen, daughter of David and Sarah Larsen, was born and raised in Brigham City with her three brothers. She is a 2019 grad-uate of Box Elder High School where she ex-celled in many areas. She is a four-year mem-ber of the Rockettes drill team, she lettered all four years, and was named to the 2018-2019 All-Region Drill Team. Leah has placed in the top five in many of her solo dance cate-gories earning her sev-eral awards and schol-arships. Leah plans on furthering her dance career through choreogra-phy, performing, music videos, and teaching. At a very young age Leah was introduced to dance where she immediately fell in love. Through dancing, Leah was able to find confidence, friendship, and self-love. Leah recognizes the benefits that dance has brought her and she wants to bring those gifts to the lives of others. Through her platform “Breathe.Love.Dance.” Leah hopes to work with youth in the community and provide access to dance; teaching them ways to love themselves and others; and providing a welcoming, inclusive environment. Working with the nonprofit Dance for Life and performing arts organizations around the community, she will:

Gracie Palmer, daughter of Shane and Tonya Palmer, loves caring for ani-mals, something she has done her en-tire life. She began volunteering at the Brigham City Animal Shelter at the age of 14, has taken an in-ternship at Bear Riv-er Animal Hospital, and now works at PetsFirst! Wellness Center. These op-portunities have on-ly strengthened her passion for animals and helped her de-velop her platform: “Lexi’s Dream.” Gracie will plan many adoption events with shelters all across the valley to place animals in good homes, and collect donations for Brigham City’s animal shelter to help improve the lives of the animals they care for. The things she wants to ac-complish and improve in her community through this are: 1. Raise awareness of the homeless animal population; 2. Find shelter animals loving and caring homes; and 3. Bring the community together toward a common goal. With her service platform, Gracie wants to honor her best friend, the late Alexis (Lexi) Nelson. Lexi shared many of these dreams with Gracie and they frequently talked about designing big adoption events. She also hopes to bring joy to the families of her community by helping them find a loving pet to join their families. Gracie was born in Ogden, Utah, and is the younger of two sisters. Her older sister, Riley, is her “best friend and biggest in-spiration.” Gracie is a graduate of Box Elder High School’s Class of 2019, where she was a member of the varsity swim team; and the marching, pep, and concert bands. Gracie works as a veterinarian’s assistant, which she thor-oughly enjoys. She is excited to attend college at Utah State Uni-versity in the fall and begin her journey to becoming a veter-inarian. She has plans to study both small and exotic animals and hopes to one day open her own veterinarian clinic. Gracie is sponsored by Members First Credit Union.

Brielle Reimann, daughter of Ryan and Tiffiny Reimann, has served throughout her life in communities both nearby and a world away.

She works as a CNA in Brigham City and loves her job because she knows she is mak-ing a difference in others’ lives every-day. She has also made a difference in the lives of people in the Dominican Re-public and Tambo-ril. In Tamboril she helped build a chil-dren’s medical clinic and taught English. These experi-ences are what led Brielle to develop her platform: “No Child Hungry.” Brielle realizes “how blessed we are here,” after seeing so many starving children, which was “heartbreaking.” Brielle plans to work with the Box Elder Food Pantry to raise awareness about food insecurity and will organize a food drive. Schools offer free lunches, but during the holidays and summer, some children go without nutritious or complete meals, even here. Brielle will set up fundraisers for the holidays and sum-mer. Brielle has been a member of many vocal groups with whom she has gone to state. As a freshman, she was awarded a letter in music. She was also named Academic All-State. Additionally, she loves oil painting and anything outdoors. Brielle was born in Cottonwood Heights, the oldest of five children, with two younger brothers and two younger sisters. She loves her family and focuses on being an example for her siblings. Brielle lives by the mantra, “We can do hard things,” something her mother reminds her regularly. Brielle hopes to become a pediatrician, so she can help children. Her dream is to set up a humanitarian organization against hunger in other countries, or be an ambassador for the cause. She would also like to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Brielle is sponsored by Mountain West Bank.

Tylynn Ball, like many other teenage girls, has had body image issues her entire life. She realized through interactions with others in the community, she is not alone. As she has gotten older and began her pursuit to a happier, healthier lifestyle, she decided to bring others along with her on her journey. All this is what led to the development of her platform: “Un-plugged!” Tylynn’s platform encourages all age groups to unplug their online devices and re-engage with their community. By do-ing this, individuals will improve their physical and emotion-al health while having the support of others in similar circum-stances. Some of the goals of her platform are: 1. Promote healthier habits among all age groups;

2. Develop organized exercise plans that are inclusive; and 3. Introduce healthy alternatives to everyday activities. Tylynn hopes to educate people that a healthier lifestyle doesn’t mean aban-doning their life-styles, but sim-ply changing small parts of it. Tylynn was born Oct. 31, 2001, in Brigham City, Utah, the youngest of nine children of Craig and Wendy Ball. She is a senior at Box Elder High School, where she has served in the Future Farmers of America, is a mem-ber of the National Honors Society, and on the varsity girls’ lacrosse team. Tylynn is serving her community—literally—as a waitress at Maddox Ranch House. She is working toward her goal to become a journalist in cultural anthropology and anticipates enjoying the wonders the world has to offer through that ca-reer. Tylynn is sponsored by Molgard Law Offices.

Kiersten Langford has always had a love of the arts. Be it writing, sing-ing, dancing, draw-ing, or acting, she has enthusiasti-cally taken part in each. The most prom-inent of these has been singing. She has her mother, Charlotte, to thank for her musical abilities and Tami Van Dusen for her vocal training. Kiersten loved being a member of Box Elder High School’s Madrigals group last year, and looks forward to performing with them next year. She is also excited to join the productions group this year. She has participated in the high school’s plays every year and is currently playing Jojo, a Manhattan newsie, in this fall’s musical production, “Newsies.” Kiersten was born in Durango, Colorado, where she lived until she was 13. She was in a performing group beginning at

age five. In fourth grade, she played as Jojo, a Who, in Duran-go Arts Center’s production of “Seussical the Musical,” which was her first play. Kiersten is third youngest in a family of 11 children. Her mother passed away when Kiersten was 10 years old. Through that, music and poetry helped her cope and carry on. Her father remarried a wonderful woman, Jena, which added seven siblings to Kiersten’s already large family, mak-ing a total of 18 children. Kiersten’s love of the arts and her personal experience with finding comfort through it in difficult times are what inspired her to develop a platform on helping others find healthy emotional outlets. She plans to collaborate with the Boys and Girls Club to create a week-long camp where kids choose an art form, prepare a piece, and perform/present it to each other. Kiersten hopes that, in this way, they can find a way to not only express themselves, but also reach out to and help others in hard times. Kiersten is sponsored by Peach City Ice Cream Co.

MaKayla Bingham, daughter of Amanda Reams, and Justin and Tiffany Bingham, was born and raised in Brigham City. She graduated with Box Elder High School’s Class of 2019 with 3.8 G.P.A. while taking numer-ous AP and con-current enrollment classes. While in high school, MaKay-la was a member of the Rockettes Drill Team, for three years and was the school’s selection for Sterling Scholar in dance, and was named Academic All-Region. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, HOSA and FBLA. MaKayla has been passionate about dance for over 16 years, and wants to spread that love to the community. It is the inspira-tion for her platform: “Project S.H.I.N.E! Supporting Health by In-fluencing our Neighborhood with Energy!” As part of her platform, MaKayla will offer free dance class-es twice a month where she will teach all styles. Through this, MaKayla will show kids a positive outlet for their emotions. She has a love for kids, and cannot wait to spread the thing she en-joys most with the age groups she loves most. Being the oldest grandchild, MaKayla was surrounded with kids younger than her, and she built a bond with each of her cousins. She realized how much she loved kids, which led her to her career: MaKayla will attend the University of Utah this fall on an academic scholarship, majoring in biochemistry, with an aspiration to be a pediatrician. MaKayla is sponsored by Calls Drive-in.

Ainslie Bryce was born in Tucson, Arizona, on Aug. 7, 2001, to parents, Lance and Shellie Bryce, the middle of five children. Ainslie graduat-ed from Box Elder High School with a 4.0 G.P.A. and was in the top 3% ac-ademically in her class. She was a varsity cheerlead-er throughout high school and was named cheer cap-tain her senior year. She loved to sup-port each sport and all clubs. Ainslie was awarded Sterling Scholar in Family and Con-sumer Science. She has enjoyed coming to the Peach Queen Pageant in the past and is excited to be apart of it this year. Ainslie’s platform is “Sew Much More,” which will seek to bring awareness about the lost art of sewing and how it can make a difference in people’s lives throughout the world. She plans to accomplish this goal by teaming up with local groups, such as the Boys and Girls Club to tie quilts that will be donat-ed to the Family Support Center. She is also working with her local church group to make fleece blankets and stuffed toys to give to local police and fire-fighters to give to children with which they come into contact. Ainslie has also become a part of the Days for Girls, Mountain View Brigham City Team to make DfG kits to deliver internation-ally to women in need. Ainslie is attending Weber State University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a Master’s degree as a nurse practitioner. Ainslie is sponsored by Dr. Lance R. Bryce.

Ember Gonsalves, daughter of Sean and Estte Gon-salves, developed a passion for swimming over the four years of her high school career. It taught her dedication, determina-tion, self discipline, and resiliency. Through swimming, she has always had a safe community where she built friendships that supported her in setting and achieving her goals. This experience is what led Ember to create her platform: “Just Keep Swimming.” Ember will teach free swim lessons to children, hoping to reduce risk factors in their lives, as well as give them oppor-tunity, a safe community, and teach them important life values they’ll always be able to fall back on. Through her platform, she will run the Michael Phelps swim program at the Boys and Girls Club in the summer. Ember was born in Bountiful, Utah, the fourth youngest of six children. She graduated in May and plans to attend Utah State University this fall.

Ember works as a lifeguard, swim coach, and al-so teaches private swim lessons. She also works at Asian Fusion on the week-ends. Ember loves working with kids and enjoys teach-ing them something they’ll always be able to use in their lives. She has not cho-sen a specific ca-reer yet, but whatev-er she decides on, it will indeed help change children’s lives. Ember is sponsored by Gillies Funeral Chapel.

Kayla Edelman, daughter of Kurtis and Amber Edelman of West Corinne, is dedicated to helping others in pain. Since childhood, she has had the unique ability to read the emotions carried by those around her. In recent years, her neighborhood friends and families have lost five teenagers to untimely deaths. These events have sparked in Kayla a desire to seek out and support teens strug-gling with thoughts of suicide. She wants to help others know that they are loved. In 2018, Kay-la volunteered with “Walk with Some-one” to support sui-cide prevention awareness. She has also become a mem-ber of the SafeTalk Suicide Prevention Team, which helps further her goals. Kayla hopes her service plat-form, “Stand Up And Speak Out” will edu-cate more SafeTalk Suicide Prevention team members. She plans to partner with Brigham City Suicide Prevention Center, and Box Elder High School HOPE Squad to create positive youth activities that: 1. Increase understanding; 2. Help others recognize the signs; and 3. Provide a safe environment for teens Kayla is the oldest child in a military serving family. Her fa-ther has served several tours of duty throughout Kayla’s life-time. The Edelman family has risen to each occasion, allowing every family member to become resilient in hard times.

In 2006, Kurtis Edelman was the victim of a roadside bomb in Iraq. Through many years of rehabilitation, Kayla and her family have felt the loving influence of medical professionals, and Kayla found a desire to serve others in the same capacity. She is enrolled at Utah State University, where she will pursue a degree in nursing, with a minor in music therapy. Kayla has a brother, Turner, and a sister, Allie. Through a re-cent adoption, she has a new sister, Milena. Kayla is sponsored by Great Lengths Clothing.

Janalee Bott, daughter of Michael and Margo Bott, has lived in Brigham City her whole life and loves the commu-nity. The 17-year-old is the youngest of two sisters and one brother. Janalee is excited to be a senior at Box Elder High School. She is also taking classes at Bridgerland Technical College in cosmetology. She plans on graduat-ing from the pro-gram and opening her own salon one day. In high school she was on the Col-orguard team for three years. She loved being a part of the team and learning a new unique skill. Janalee is known for her kind-ness; someone who is always trying to help and be there for others as a friend. Because of this, she worries about bul-lying and the high suicide rate at the high school. She fears that individuals who need help are too afraid to reach out. Janalee’s platform would create a program called “It’s All About Y.O.U.,” which stands for Youth Opportunities to be Un-derstood. She wants to provide students an opportunity to receive individual help for bullying or for suicide prevention that they might be uncomfortable receiving in large groups. Janalee is sponsored by Bott and Sons.

Abby Jones, 17, daughter of Danelyn and Marc Jones, has had a bubbly personality her whole life, and is very sym-pathetic, even able to pick up on others’ feelings. She loves her friends and her family. She tries hard in things that motivate her and works hard for what she wants. Abby wants to be a dental hygienist and a mother; also, she has always wanted a big family and to make a difference in the world. She wants to help people have good physical and mental health no matter their age. She will try her best to brighten your day, even if it’s for a short amount of time. Abby loves “girly” things, but isn’t afraid to play in the mud once in awhile. She works at Yogurt Factory, which she loves. Her favorite

food is chicken nug-gets, and she loves Dr.Pepper. She is cra-zy with her friends and is loyal. She will be there for you through thick and thin and will stand up to those in most need. It doesn’t take much to make Abby happy, she is easi-ly entertained and loves to make oth-ers smile. She is goofy and is always looking forward to even the little things. Abby’s platform is “Friendship is Forever.” She has always been good at listening as well as holding a conversation, no matter the age or clique a person fits into. Abby is also con-cerned that the elderly in nursing homes don’t get enough people like her to visit, and she wants to be there for them. The best ways she can achieve her goal is to: 1. Find out who gets the least amount of visitors in the homes and visit them; 2. Host small family nights and have volunteers play games and talk to those in the nursing homes; and 3. Finally to not only be a friend, but make friendships she will remember her whole life. Abby is sponsored by McArthur Dental.

McKenzie Bierer, daughter of John and Natalie Bier-er of Brigham City, believes in serving her community. She served with the Brigham City Youth City Council for three years and worked on the council for two of those. In that time, she helped plan, and partici-pated in, service projects that in-cluded food drives, senior citizen danc-es, community hol-iday events and races. She loved helping with all the events. McKenzie is en-rolled at Dixie State University where she is studying marketing manage-ment with a minor in American Sign Language and commu-nication. She loves being active in many clubs. She serves as the publicist for the Scuba Diving Club and is a member of

DECA. Last year, she placed at the state DECA competition, coming in fourth in her individual event and fifth in her team event. She qualified for the international competition where she placed in the top eight in the human recourses event. McKenzie is the second oldest of the six children. She loves spending time with her dog, Griffin, that she trained as an emotional support dog. McKenzie’s platform is “Empowering Expressions,” through which she hopes to help build positive, real face-to-face rela-tionships. She would do this by encouraging talking without texting or using other social media platforms to help allevi-ate our communities growing social media anxiety. She plans on teaching ways to build and create stronger relationships through communication techniques and influencing youth to express themselves with verbal skills. McKenzie is sponsored by Box Elder Credit Union.

Lindsey Scott, daughter of Jeff and Lisa Scott, is pas-sionate about sharing her love of reading with youth in the community. Her love of reading began at a very young age when she asked her mom for a chapter book because she had grown bored of children’s picture books. At age seven, she set a goal to read 100 minutes straight, simply to be able to say she had done it. Because books have always meant so much to Lindsey, four years ago she began volunteering at the Brigham City Public Library. These volunteer hours have solidified her pas-sion for reading, a passion she’d like to try to instill in young readers through her service platform, “Love of Literacy.”

Her platform has three goals: 1. Help children gain better reading skills; 2. Help children develop a passion for reading; and 3. Help children solidify the impor-tance of reading for their future success. Lindsey will work directly un-der the literacy spe-cialist at Box Elder School District, who assigned Lindsey to focus on students at Mountain View Elementary since it’s the school she feels will benefit most from Lindsey’s expertise. With “Love of Literacy,” Lindsey is not only excited to im-prove reading skills at Mountain View, but to also help the children of our community discover the same life-long zest for reading she has. When she’s not reading, Lindsey collects spoons and has quite an assortment of them. She is the youngest of four chil-dren and has studied piano for the last seven years. Lindsey is a senior at Box Elder High School where academics are very important to her. She strives to keep her grades up and works hard to make sure everything she does reflects her values. Lindsey is sponsored by Scott & Associates.

A Tremonton woman holds a special place in her heart for an early Peach Days souve-nir that’s been passed down through her family, but has questions about its history, and the woman who received it nearly 115 years ago. Inside Anna Hopkins home is a China plate that’s well-over 100 years old. The plate has a picture of a peach along with the words, “Brigham City Peach Day” engraved in gold lettering. Hopkins said her great-great-grandmother, Catherine Elizabeth Jones, of Salt Lake City, traveled to Brigham City for Peach Days in 1905 or 1906, only one or two years after the founding of the celebration. According to an article written about the plate by the Box Elder News Journal in 1970, “As she [Jones] stepped from the train, A.W. Compton presented the souvenir plate along with others to the train passengers who had come for the celebration.”

Jones kept the plate, taking it with her when she moved to California sometime after

1930. Looking into her family

history, Hopkins said Jones nev-er lived in Brigham City, but

according to familysearch.org, she was born and

married in North Og-den, later moving to

Salt Lake City and then to Los Ange-

les, where she died. “I want to know why she kept it,” Hopkins said. Hopkins great-grandmother, grandmother and mother, were all born and raised in California. It wasn’t un-til Hopkins was 18-months-old when her family moved to the Brigham City area.

“She [Jones] would have never known that her family would live in this area,” Hopkins said. “It must

have been special to her.” Hopkins may never know why Jones kept the plate, but she treasures it and the women who have

passed it along for 113 or 114 years. “It shows my family heritage as to where it came

from. Because then maybe I know a little bit about her [Jones] and so that’s exciting to me,” Hokpins said.

Hopkins said the souvenir plate sat on her mother’s China hutch in her childhood home. She said no one ever talked about the significance of it.

“It had a prominent place in our home,” Hopkins said. “I don’t ever remember anyone talking about it. And if they did, I was too young to re-member.” Looking at the plate, Hop-kins has many questions about its history. “Why was she in Brigham City?” Hopkins said. “Did they have other [Peach Day]

plates? Did they keep it be-cause it was pretty? I don’t know. I wish I had answers.” While Hopkins may nev-er have answers to her ques-tions, she enjoys knowing the plate is “original to Peach Days.” “Dollar value, I don’t think there’s anything to it,” Hopkins said. “But that doesn’t matter to me.”

Barker's back in businessFruitway

By Richard Carr

Barker’s Fruit Stand—one of the ma-ny small roadside fruit outlets along High-way 89 in Willard, and one with a history stretching back to the area’s original pio-neer settlers—is open this year for anoth-er season. What makes this important is that it was questionable at one point after an im-paired driver crashed a pickup into the south side of the business during last year’s Peach Days. The Barkers’ granddaughter was the only one minding the fruit stand when the

accident occurred. The wall literally came tumbling down, and the roof collapsed on top of the truck. The granddaughter had a small lacer-ation on her head from flying debris, and the truck driver suffered bruises and non life-threatening cuts and scrapes. With the impact of the collision behind them, Barker Fruit Stand is now ready for a new season of providing their custom-ers with the best fruit possible and they’re hoping for a less hectic Peach Day than last year. Fred Barker, co-owner of the stand with his wife, Debbie, said, “Since it was uncertain after last year’s Peach Day whether or not our fruit stand would re-cover, we are glad to have it open for busi-ness this year.” Every year there is a crop of cherries, apricots, pears, peaches, nectarines, ap-ples, and raspberries to harvest and sell.

During the harvest, the Barkers and ex-tended family come together to pick the fruit and deliver it to long-standing cus-tomers, or sell it at the fruit stand. Like most agricultural commodities, the fruit needs to be picked quickly when it is ripe and brought to market. “It’s enjoyable to have the kids and grand kids involved. It helps them to build skills they can use later in life,” Fred Bark-er said. The farm has been in operation since 1871 when the family’s ancestors home-steaded property along the base of the mountains. The Barker farm has been designated a Century Farm, which is a farm or ranch in the United States or Can-ada that has been officially recognized by a regional program documenting farms that have been continuously owned by a

single family for 100 years or more. The Barker’s fruit stand opened in the early 1950s as automobile traffic began to populate the road running past the farm, which currently includes 120 acres. One-fifth of that land is dedicated to fruit crops.

There was a dairy operation on the farm for many years, but that has since been removed from the farm’s operations. Barker’s Fruit Stand, 960 North Main in Willard, is open during the week through the spring and summer harvest seasons, usually between mid April to late September.

Father and son: Steve and Gay Pettingill, standing in front of row crops in 2013.

Carrying on a legacyFruitway

By Nelson Phillips

A Box Elder County farm-ing family is determined to carry on with their iconic South Willard business, while mourning the re-cent loss of their leader and patri-arch. Gay Pettingill, who together with wife, Helen, founded Pettin-gill’s Fruit & Produce, one of the oldest operations on the fruitway, passed away in June of 2018 at the age of 91. Those he left behind are still coming to terms with the loss of a husband, father and grandfa-ther who played such an important role in their lives. That loss is amplified for Steve Pettingill and Jean Davis, the sib-lings who not only lost a father, but a business partner and hero as well. Pettingill’s is a family business in every sense, with Steve oversee-ing farming and field operations while Jean focuses on running the retail side of things in the store. The origins of the business can be traced back to 1947, when a 20-year-old Gay, fresh from serving a three-year tour in the Navy dur-ing World War II, pooled resources with a relative and together bought a 55 acre parcel in South Willard. “Dad used his last Navy pay-check to purchase part of a farm; he couldn’t purchase it all because he didn’t have enough money,” son Steve explained. “He had a broth-er-in-law that was a doctor, and he had financed the other half of the farm.”

Pettingill's Fruit & Produce, located at 8815 US-89 in South Willard, has been in operation since 1947.

Those first few years were rough, as the farm’s land had a lot of boulders and rocks strewn about that needed to be re-moved before it could be put to use. After two years, the brother-in-law wanted out, and made arrangements with Gay to take over the entire parcel. It was during this time that Gay mar-ried Helen Humphries, a Pleasant View girl he had known since she was 12 years old. They wed in December of 1948, even-tually adding four sons and a daughter to the family. “As he progressed [removing rocks] he started planting peach trees. Really, he and Mom planted anything they could to make money,” said Steve. The couple added cherry trees to the orchards because they were a “good cash crop, and they could grow a lot of them.” They opened their first fruit stand in a small rock garage located up the road from their present stand. As more space was cleared on the farm and more fruit trees planted, Pettingill’s opened up a second stand on the northern edge of their land. “When I came along he started in the row-crop business, because he had field help that he could use to pull weeds and stuff with. That was in the 50s. And then in the 60s we started acquiring more prop-erty,” Steve said. Beginning with the original 55 acres, the family added 15 acres purchased from Earl Lemon, and then another 60 acres from two parcels in Perry. In 1984 anoth-er 16 acres was added in South Willard, and the current building housing the fruit stand at 8815 S. Highway 89 was con-structed. The family described Gay as an inno-vator, a driving force behind the success of the family business, and even the fruit-way in general. “He was interested in saving energy

and water, he was the first one in this ar-ea to do drip irrigation and sprinkler irri-gation,” said Helen Pettingill. “My Dad was a very progressive farm-er,” added Steve. “He was able to envision the things of the future that needed to be done. He was the first in this area to buy a trunk shaker, one of the first to buy a limb shaker. He was always interested in ma-chinery that would facilitate getting jobs done faster and more efficiently.” During his tenure as a full-time farm-er, which lasted from 1947 up until 2018, Gay served on the Utah Cherry Board, the Utah Apple Marketing Board, and as president of the Box Elder Soil Conserva-tion District. In 1966 he was named Box Elder County Horticulturist of the Year, and was twice named as the Utah Hor-ticulturist of the Year, in 1969 and 2003. Never actually retiring, Gay was heav-ily involved in the operations of the farm until the day he died. At 91 years of age he was still helping Steve with the spray-ing and pruning of fruit trees, and over-

seeing the family’s South Willard Farm, duties that Steve has now added to his workload. “He was a big help, and is sorely missed,” said Steve, his voice cracking as he related stories about going fishing with his Dad in 2016, and taking the Hon-or Flight back to Washington D.C. to see the war memorials. “My Dad would come in every morn-ing and ask ‘what do you need?’ And ev-ery afternoon he’d be right there eating an ice cream cone,” said Jean, eyes water-ing as she pointed to a chair at the back of the store. “He was a good, honest man,” said Hel-en of her husband. “He’d do anything for anybody, and we miss him.” The Pettingills say they expect to re-main in business for as long as their health holds out. For now, though, farm fresh produce, candy and the best peach milkshakes anywhere are still available Monday through Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The Nauvoo Remembered booth at Peach Days offers patrons a chance to purchase unique jewelry made from the stone of 81 different temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The jewelry, secured in ei-ther gold and silver plate or sterling silver, includes neck-laces, earrings, rings, lockets and charms for women. Men’s options include cuff links, tie bars, tie clips, tie tacks and la-pel pins. Owner Doug Tangren said visitors to his booth on the pla-za can look through 80 pieces of temple stone and pick one they like or that has meaning to them, and have it made in 15 minutes into the jewelry of their choice. “They get to pick both the setting and the stone so it truly is an individual ex-perience for them. “There’s nothing sacred or holy about the stones and we don’t purport that they have any power, but they can help remind you of the power asso-ciated with that building,” he said. Prices are $25 to $33 for gold and silver plate and $45 to $55 for sterling silver. Each item comes in its own jewelry box. Tangren said the stones are all scrap pieces that came off various temples during construction or renovation. He acquires them personally or from temple construction workers, engineers or even missionaries who brought some home with them. He can verify stones eas-ily when they come direct-

ly from a temple and verifies others based on the story of the person who is providing the stone. “There’s no certificate of authenticity so we just try to be careful,” he said. “Some-times it’s totally random. For instance, people came to us with stones from the Taipei, Brisbane, Australia and Sa-moa temples. Some people from Boston gave us stones

their father gave to them from the Boston Temple. We veri-fied the stones based on the timing element of their story.” Chances are the company will never acquire stones from all the active or announced temples worldwide, “though that is my dream,” Tangren said. “We have stones from all the Utah and Idaho tem-ples, all of Arizona, except Me-sa, temples and all the ones in

California except Los Ange-les.” He said the top three sell-ers are stones from Salt Lake, Nauvoo and it’s a tie between Logan and Manti. Although the company website says stone from the Brigham City Temple is sold out, he actually held them back so they would be avail-

able at Peach Days. Hailing from West Jor-dan, Tangren, who owns the business with his wife, Mi-chelle, started operating it full time one year ago when he was laid off from his job of 23 years. His four adult chil-dren also help out at vendor events. The business was actually started in 1995 by his father, Burke, who had served a mis-sion in Nauvoo and acquired one large block of stone from the Church. The stone used to build the original temple is found all over that area. Burke made some of it in-to jewelry and sold it to gift shops in the town,” Tangren said. “He just loved Nauvoo so he gave away more than he sold. Eventually his health went down and he passed away five years ago. “Knowing his love of tem-ple stone jewelry, I wanted to carry on the tradition as a way

of keeping my father close,” he said. When going through his father’s possessions after he died, Tangren discovered his father also had temple stones from Nigeria, Palmyra and Salt Lake City. That’s when Tan-gren decided to start collect-ing temple stones from all over. “I’ve loved it because it’s so rewarding having these experiences with people full time,” he said. “It’s been a great blessing in my life. People are so grateful and recognize the uniqueness of what we do.” While much of their sales come from their website at www.nauvooremembered.com, Tangren said he enjoys doing vendor shows in the summer and at Christmas. “There’s something fun about meeting people and seeing them grasp how truly unique this product is,” he said. “It’s very meaningful so I like to experience that with them.”

Stitching together a traditionFeatured Vendor

By Hailey Hendricks

Peach Days has been a tradition for one former Brigham City resident since childhood, and as an adult, she’s come back to carry on the tradition in a differ-ent way. It’s been 10 years since Lynette Hol-lingshead set up her craft trade of hem-stitching as a Peach Days booth, and ev-ery year since, she’s come back. Growing up in Brigham City, Hol-lingshead said she’s always had a love for Peach Days and her family traditions at this time of year. And so setting up a booth, seemed like the logical thing to do. “I was able to combine my love for those two things, Peach Days and hemstitching,” Hollingshead said. “And I just love sitting in my booth—whether it’s working with customers or seeing friends and acquaintances from Brigham City that I grew up with or have known my whole life.” Hollingshead’s says her grandmother taught her how to hemstitch, knit, crochet and embroider. Due to the amount of time each one takes, Hollingshead has focused her business efforts on hemstitching – a open-work hand-sewing technique that embellishes the hem of a fabric. “This is a dying art form,” Hollingshead said. “I’m grateful I get to con-tinue this heritage and legacy.” A majority of Hollingshead’s hemstitching projects include baby blankets (large and small), baby bibs and snap bibs. When making a blanket, Hollingshead said it takes her roughly 35-40 minutes from start to finish. “I pick out my front and back, I cut off as much as I need, I lay them out, cut selvage off, round the corners and pin them, and then I’ll hem-stitch it,” Hollingshead said. Once the hemstitching is complete, Hollingshead then has “to trim the corners, iron it, fold it, package it.” While making one blanket doesn’t seem too long of a process, Hol-lingshead said time adds up when she has to complete regular customer orders on top of preparing for special events like Peach Days. But, Hollingshead said the reward is great. “The end result is that child is getting comfort,” Hollingshead said. “This could be their favorite blanket – the one they can’t go to sleep without.” Located near the Historic Courthouse, Hollingshead’s business, Hem-stitchery, will sell small baby blankets for $18; large for $20; burb bibs for $2; and snap bibs for $3.

Lynette Hollingshead works at her sewing machine on a hemstitching project. She has had a booth at Peach Days for the last 10 years offering custom hemstitched products.

Following the Lip Sync Battle, a group of local young musicians who form the group 43 West will take the stage at 8 p.m. 43 West is a newly-formed rock band comprised of students from the studio of Rich Bishoff, a guitarist/singer songwriter/producer/guitar instructor from Utah who is known for his outstanding guitar musi-cianship, impressive song writing, raw vo-cals, and a modern sound. He is involved in other side projects, including teaching private guitar lessons, solo performances and running a recording studio. He will al-so probably perform some of the numbers with the band of students. Entertainment continues on Satur-day when The Happy Wanderers take the stage at 2 p.m. The Wanderers are local group of ac-cordion players from Willard who enjoy gathering to play popular classical tunes. Led by Blair Dean, the group includes: Jan-ice McCallister, Gwen Shoemaker, Kar-ma Davis, Ramona Davis, and Bart Chadis. Half a world away from their familiar haunts, the legacies of Sherlock and Shake-speare appear on the American west coast in the 19th century in the Brigham City Fine Art Center’s Peach Days melodrama, “Holmes on the Barbary Coast or Much Ado About Something.” As the story develops in the mid 1890s in and around the Barbary Coast section of San Francisco, a mystery emerges from the clash of forces, good and evil, putting our hero and heroine in danger, and creating a trail of clues to be followed to all the an-swers. The Barbary Coast was a notorious dis-trict during the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries in San Francisco, hous-ing dance halls, concert saloons, bars, and jazz clubs. It was born during the Califor-nia Gold Rush of 1849, when the population of San Francisco was growing at an expo-nential rate due to the rapid influx of tens of thousands of miners trying to find gold. The production follows a young Scot-tish lady, Colleen McTavish, who is new-ly arrived at the city’s wharf from England. She made the acquaintance of a young sail-or from that ship, Andrew Finlay, who devel-ops an attraction to her. As they become familiar with their new surroundings the mystery develops. What are gang leader, Flaherty, and his band of wharf rat children, Mouse, Bow Wow, Catkin, Sparrow, and Bug, plan-ning for their next adventure? How much does Detective Holmes know about the ne-farious scheme, especially since Mouse is secretly working with him? Has De-idre Watkins, a young, energetic, and as-piring newspaper reporter, uncovered any of the plot’s details? Is Madame Mimi Von Duesenberg, a grand opera singer who has traveled the world, involved in this in-trigue? Associated with some of these charac-ters is Count Dimitri Smirnoff, an aristocrat with a dubious ancestry, a fondness for jew-elry, and a slight drinking problem. Has he gone over to the dark side and become one of the culprits? Sergeant William “Bill” Lester, one of San

Francisco’s finest, attempts to sort through the confusing evidence, but often times be-comes more of a distraction. Emma Parkin opens the melodrama with “Ladies and Gents” which sets the scene for what is about to transpire. The show is an original musical melo-drama written by Dee Ann Nichols and di-rected by her mother, Geri Garfield, with assistance from Andy Peterson. Both Gar-field and Nichols have a background in musical theater and have been collabo-rating on Peach Days melodramas since 2008. “Melodramas are difficult because of the level of exaggeration needed from the performers to present the story to the audi-ence,” said Garfield. The cast includes: Maggie Fisher (Col-leen McTavish), Izaiah Creager (Andrew Finlay), Ellen Hunsaker (Deidre Watkins), Audrey Dickey (Madame Mimi Von Due-senberg), William Bruce Baird (Detec-tive Holmes), David Robinson (Count Dim-itri Smirnoff), Colton Pickarts (Sergeant

William “Bill” Lester), Andy Petersen (Fla-herty), Jorden Sevilla (Mouse), Alice Comp-ton (Bow Wow), Haylie Munns (Catkin), Hai-ley Fisher (Sparrow), and Amber Compton (Bug). Technical support is provided by Hayden Turner, Daniel Chambers, and Brady Andreason, while sound will be han-dled by Abby Robinson. Musical accompa-niment will be by Sally Warren. The stage manager and assistant director is Abby Robinson. Plan to take time out during the heat of the day to participate in some good, ol’ fash-ion fun inside the cool theater. The show is about 50 minutes long and free lemonade will be available outside to attendees. The first performance will be Friday, Sept. 6, at about 8 p.m. after the Community Kick-off Parade. Shows will continue on Sat-urday, Sept. 7, at 2, 4, and 6 p.m. Tickets are $6 each or $25 for a family up to five people and available at www.bcfineartscenter.org or at the door. Call 435-723-0740 for more information.

Dedicated to runningFeatured volunteer

After 15 years as an or-ganizer for the Peach Days 10K race, Box Elder High School track and cross coun-try coach Jeff Rawlins said he loves seeing his students give back through their vol-unteer involvement in the race. Rawlins, who also teach-es math at the high school, said the school’s cross-coun-try team will help on race day, Sept. 7, at 8 a.m., to earn mon-ey to pay for team expenses. Some of the funds raised will be shared with the school’s Future Business Leaders of America, whose students will help out with registration on the morning of the race. “We’re so fortunate that people in the community re-ally support this event be-cause it gives our students an opportunity for service,” he said. Runners can sign up on-line for three races (10K, 5K and one mile) until Tuesday, Sept. 4, by going to www.goldenspiketrackclub.com. For safety reasons, the 10K race is for runners 14 and older. Some 250 people signed up last year for the 10K race and 100 people signed up for the 5K race. Both races will be held this year, along with a one-miler for 6th, 7th and 8th graders, which usually at-

tracts 10 to 20 runners. This will be the 46th year for the 10K race, the second for the 5K race and the sev-enth for the mile, he said. The cost to enter a race is $25 with a shirt, or $20 with-out, if runners preregister. An extra $5 will be charged to runners who enter on the day of the race. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each cat-egory with prize drawings af-ter each race for anyone who participated. The prizes are donations from various area businesses. “I am very thankful to the city for helping us out and to the chamber of commerce,” he said, “and all the business-es willing to give out prizes.” Rawlins said he’s been in charge of the races for the past 10 years although he’s

been involved ever since he started teaching and coach-ing at the high school 15 years ago. He was a high school run-ner “and really enjoyed it,” so decided to combine his love of running with teaching math to create a wonderful lifestyle for him and his family. “I really enjoy coaching and teaching because there are so many positives seeing kids work hard, and improve until they’re the best on the team,” he said. “I also love how they grasp new concepts in math. For some, math comes easy but for others I just love see-ing them learn and grow.” Rawlins has been married for eight years to Robyn, the daughter of Todd and Janna Cordner from Brigham City, whom he met on a blind date.

They have three children, Amelia, age 6, Carter, 4 and Logan, 2. His children “love com-ing to track meets and run-ning on the track,” he said. “So, I have to make sure they don’t get run over by the big-ger runners.” If down the road, none of his children become runners, he said he’s okay with that, as long as they can find their own passions. “I love my wife very much and am grateful she allows me to do everything I get to do,” he said. The starting line is at the City Center Plaza heading south on Main Street at 8 a.m. sharp, followed by the one-mile race. Two water stops will be provided for the 10K race at miles 2-2.5 and 5, ap-proximately.

Jeff Rawlins (right) and his wife, Robyn, enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in addition to Jeff’s love of running.

Other EventsCommunity Night Formerly known as Family Friendly Friday, Community night, sponsored by Autoliv, is an opportunity for local area residents to enjoy a less crowded experience. Vendor booths open at 10 a.m. and are open until 10 p.m. City of Fun Carnival will be open from 4 to 11 p.m. The community kickoff parade begins at 6 p.m. And will run from 200 South to 300 North. Immediately following the Kickoff Parade will be free activities and games on Main Street under the arch, organized by the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Utah and sponsored by Members First Credit Union, beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m. the Lip Sync Battle is returning to the Main Stage. The evening’s will conclude with a performance by 43 West Band at 8 p.m. on the Main Stage.

Bike Show The Peach Days Harley and Custom Bike Show will take place on Main Street, under the arch from about 1 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 7. This is the 19th year of the bike show. Participants need to enter their bikes from 100 South Main Street to comply with direction from local law enforcement. Reg-ister on site, and there is no fee to participate. Donations are en-couraged since the event is a fundraiser for Brigham City Suicide Prevention. Bikes in the designated show area will be secured in a flagged area to keep spectators from touching them. This will also allow participants to leave the area and enjoy Peach Days. The show lasts until approximately 7:30 p.m., and motorcycles should stay

as long as possible. T-shirts will be available for a donation of $20. In 2018, the bike show raised $2,800 for suicide prevention and this year the organizers have a goal of raising $5,000. At 6 p.m. there will be giveaways and awards presented. With the growing number of female motorcycle owners, a new class for female owners only was created. This year's Bike Show is under the direction of founder and chairman, Kelly Driscoll, and Co-Chairman Scott Hendricksen. Anyone who wants to volunteer or make a donation may contact Kelly Driscoll at Drewes Floral and Gift at (434)723-8571 or stop by at 28 S. Main Street, Brigham City.

Library Book Sale The annual Library Book Sale will be held on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. At the Brigham City Public Library 26 E. For-est Street.

ASA Softball Tournament Peach Days ASA Mens D tournament will be played Friday-Saturday, Sept. 6-7 beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday evening. There is a three game guarantee for teams participating.
