Arctic air has made yet another surge toward Oklahoma. This time, unlikhas been combined with moisture. February is often the snowiest month Sooner State, and this one is off to a great start. We have already seen snow with more storms possible. Not good news for the roadways and sexactly what this drought-stricken state needs. The past five snowstorms hwith our wildfire threat.

The bone chilling cold has been the real story lately. Wow! How brutal wweek? Wind chills around zero for more than 48 hours! That was the cseason, but we arent done with extreme cold yet! For most Oklahomansthan 32 degrees are insane and brutal. At this point we all stay indoors, ligand drink hot chocolate. Understandable. I am an Oklahoman, born andlive in South Dakota right out of college. These past couple of weeks havthe brutal winters up there. One thing I remember most about that placwere never meant to live, is when Id walk outside and my breath woulinside my nostrils! That was the strangest feeling. Thursday morning, Febthing happened to me in Oklahoma! That just aint right! We have enougphenomena to deal with in Oklahoma, so we dont have time or a need icicles).

A couple of things to remember when Oklahoma turns into the Arctic Circset in in less than 30 minutes when the wind chill is 15-to-20 degrees belowhen walking to class and dont stay outside any longer than you have of your skin as possible 2) Your water pipes can easily freeze and burst, flwhen temperatures dip down less than 25 degrees for an extended perioare freezing your tutu off, there is a good chance your pets are too. Brinremember their water source is likely frozen.

Keep thinking happy, warm thoughts, wear as many layers as you can pawith your pets. Warmer weather wont stay away too much longer.

The 2013 football season for the Norman Tigers didnt end howthey would have liked it to end. For the first time in three years, the Tigers failed to make the playoffs. A positive for the Tigers isthat two of their seniors were selected to the West Side All Stateteam and will play in the Coaches Association All-State game:defensive leader Cade Parker and do-everything, special-teamsplayer Matt Hockett.

Hockett handled all the kicking duties for the Tigers and did themwell. In my opinion the best all-around kicker in the state, Hockettwill walk on at Oklahoma State University and play collegefootball for Mike Gundy and the Cowboys. Hockett has a strongleg and under-appreciated athleticism. Hockett also playedreceiver at times in his career, and even soccer.

Cade Parker started the year with five sacks by himself of theAlabama-bound, highly recruited David Cornwell in the Cross-Town Clash. Parker continued to destroy offenses all year on hisway to setting the Norman all-time single-season sack record of21 this year. Parker used speed and strength to wreak havoc on6A quarterbacks the entire year.

Payton Prince is capping his senior year with his selection as theCoaches Association All State team for the West Side. Prince has beenon an upward climb since his sophomore year with the Timberwolves.

The talented Prince combines a great mix of size, speed and abilitythat would make any coach at the next level happy to have him ontheir campus. At various times this year, he took direct snaps out of theWild Wolf formation for the Timberwolves.

Prince could score in many ways, though he tallied 26 touchdownsduring his career. He could catch and run and, when asked, could takea direct snap and make good things happen for the Timberwolves.

Prince was double teamed much of the year, and his receptions andreceiving touchdowns dropped a bit from his total of 40 receptionsand 568 yards receiving for 10 touchdowns. For this year, Princessenior campaign had him rushing the ball 29 times for 184 yards with11 rushing touchdowns, while receiving Prince hauled in 36 catchesfor 528 yards with only five touchdowns.

Though he committed early to the University of Tulsa, he has drawninterest from many schools, including Oklahoma and Arkansas. Withsigning day around the corner, it will be interesting to see wherePrince decides to take his talents to the next level.

In 2011, when the University of Oklahoma named Lon Kruger the newhead coach for the mens basketball team, some people wondered ifKruger was the right man for the job. Could he get it done?

Since the Sooners are in the top 25 and are in the upper portion of the Big12, Id say they have only just begun.

Lon Kruger has been around basketball for a long time, being a top playerin Kansas High School basketball while playing in Silver Lake, Kansas.Kruger then donned the silver and purple of the Kansas State Wildcats, playing for a great coach in Jack Hartman. Kruger was and still is an iconin Manhattan; he was the Big 8 player of the year in back-to-back years1975-1975.

Kruger is still loved in the home of the Wildcats go to any sports bar and you can still find pictures of CoachKruger from his playing days and his days of coaching the Wildcats all over the place. As the head man for theWildcats, Coach Kruger led the team to the NCAA tournament and an Elite 8.

Coach Kruger then took the head job at the University of Florida and took the Gators to the Final Four. In his firstever appearance in the 1994 Final Four, Kruger was making a name for himself as a top coach in the NCAAranks.

Next Lon went to Illinois, where he signed three straight Mr. Basketballs from the state of Illinois. While with theIllini, Kruger made the NCAA tournament three of the four years he was the head man.

After only four years with a Big 10 school, Kruger took his shot at NBA, taking over as the head guy for theAtlanta Hawks, and then spent a year as an a ssistant coach with the New York Knicks.

After that year with the Knicks, Kruger went to La s Vegas to take over the Running Rebels of UNLV. While in LasVegas, he was a constant fixture in the post season. He became the only head coach in NCAA history to takefive different Division 1 teams to the NCAA tournament.

Then, fatefully, Lon Kruger took over a team in Oklahoma that was in a decl ine with the departure of BlakeGriffin; the Sooners future looked bleak. Jeff Capel left, and a lot of Sooners fans felt like the coach was neverthere to really help OU. Capel always seemed to have a little too much Blue Devil blood to make it work.

Lon has the Sooners playing well a nd looks to make it two years in a row in the NCAAs big dance. With hisgood recruiting and ability to show players that Oklahoma is a basketball destination, Kruger and the Soonersare heading in the right direction.

The hardly-ever-mad, no-cussing Kruger is exactly what OU needed to get the program back on the right path inheading toward the big prize. Kruger will get the Sooners to a Final Four mark my word!

    T.R. MoormanThe Art of Manliness

Romance the StoneThe True Meaning of Valentines DayAs men, we all hate to admit it (mostly because were lazy, which isalright), but part of being manly sometimes means taking the timeto actually figure out women. Thats not an easy task on accountof how women are crazy, something that has long been welldocumented throughout the history of our species. We dont need

to take this fact f or granted, but theres nothing wrong with takingit for fact either. Even women themselves, when theyre not beingcrazy, will admit that theyre all crazy. Its part of their beauty, andI have a hunch that its a vital part of keeping us sharp, which inturn leads to a greater chance of survival for the genes, and allthat other science junk.Lets be honest with ourselves: The truth is if it werent for women, wed all get fat eating junk food, drinking beer and playing videogames. Thats all we would be interested in doing if it werent forwomen. (Hats off to all the guys who manage to live the dream inspite of the fairer species. The dream is your reward; never forgetthe beauty of the dream.)

I was talking to a buddy of mine recently who was complainingabout his wife and the pains of Valentines Day. He broke itdown something like this: I know whats going to happen. Mywife wants me to make dinner reservations and surprise her, butshe doesnt trust me to pick the right restaurant, so she makes thedinner reservations herself, and well have to fight a crowd tobe miserable in a stuffy place together that were not enjoying, and dinner will be awful, but well have to pretend to have a

good time. Then she asks me if we should get tickets to see PaulSimon and Sting. Admittedly, Sting is good and Paul Simon isnttoo bad himself, but their time has passed; theyre mere shadowsof themselves, so weve got to beat traffic and crowds again andsit in a stadium or whatever for four hours listening to songs werealize we dont even care a bout. She knows Im right she eventells me Im right, and then she goes, Eeehhh, I think we should getthe tickets. Its your Valentines gift to me. But all I really want todo is stay at home and play video games. Why dont I get to dowhat I want to do on Valentines Day? She knows shes going tobe miserable no matter what we do.

Let me start by saying this: Hes exactly right. Nobody enjoys Valentines Day. Exactly nobody. Valentines Day is not about enjoying yourself. To understand what Valentines Day is reallyabout, you have to try to understand women, which is something no man should have to do,but it is our burden as men. So suck it up, you pansy.

The truth is that women dont actually know what they want. Essentially they want everything, and they dont want any of the bad stuff thatcomes with any of it. And theyre right to want that. You certainly cant blame them for it. But thats exactly whats driving them crazy all thetime. (Men arent that different when you come to think of it.)

Valentines Day is really all about trying to trick women into thinking that they have what they want and that theyre getting something

special. My buddys wife is a textbook case. She wants ever ything she shouldnt have and wont enjoy, but its his duty to be there and proveto her that theyre having fun. Its simple, really, and its no less than she deserves. The same goes for everyones Valentines holiday. Youvejust got to show up and pretend that youre enjoying it. That is the cornerstone of beautiful and lasting relationships. Youve just got to giveher a little adventure and romance, especially if its not enjoyable, because otherwise youre not surprising her at all youre just being thesame lazy man you normally are day in and day out.

Just because she doesnt know what she wants doesnt mean you dont have a responsibility to trick her into thinking youre giving it to her.Thats called being a man, and thats what Valentines Day is all about. Thats what Romanceis all about.

    Youre welcome.

House Bills Seek to Cut Arts Funding and Introduce Other Sweeping ChangesTwo proposed House Bills are looking to cut art funding to the Oklahoma Arts Council, which funds about 400 programsthroughout the state.

Currently the Oklahoma Arts Council, which is a state agency, receives $4 million each year. HB 1895seeks to cut 25percent of the councils budgeteach year for the next four years until all funding is eliminated.

The bills author, State Representative Josh Cockroft (R-Tecumseh), said in a statement that his intention is not to destroy the artscompletely, but to make sure that the taxpayers dolla rs are put to the best possible use.

The Arts Council can operate solely from donations and self-generated funds, without receiving state appropriations, Cockroftsaid in a statement. Promotion of the arts is a nonprofit interest, which should not be advantaged over other nonprofit effortsthat do not receive state appropriations. State government has core functions that are neglected when limited resources arediverted to things which are not core functions of government.

Another House Bill 2850also seeks to cut funding to the Oklahoma Arts Council by 25percent each yearuntil 2018. Authored by Rep. Dan Fisher (R-Yukon), the measure will be cued for considerationon February 3 when the Oklahoma Legislation convenes.

According to the Oklahoma Arts Councils Fiscal Year 2013 Impact Report, the council gave $3.6 million of its $4 millionbudget to communities in the form of grants. During that time, 101 communities and 54 of Oklahomas 77 counties wereimpacted. The grants help to fund everything from the Oklahoma City Philharmonic to the Pollard Theatre in Guthrie.

In Norman, Jazz in June officials cite the Oklahoma Arts Councils support as critical to the festivals development. The annualthree-day event attracts more than 50,000 people to the city, and a 2012 report shows that the festival infuses $2.45 millioninto Normans economy and generates $208,361 in sales taxes.

A search on arts.ok.gov reveals that during FY 2013, Norman organizations received 30 grants from the OAC ranging in

amounts from $550 for the Jacobson Art Houses Uncommon Brothers: Cheyenne Art Show in November 2012 to $30,287for the Norman Firehouse Art Centers Art Learning in Communities.

Other Norman organizations that have received OAC grants during FY 2013 include the Childrens Arts Network, CimarronCircuit Opera Company, Dreamer Concepts Foundation, Jazz in June, the Norman Arts Council, Norman Ballet Company,Norman Community Choral Society, Norman Public Schools, the Pioneer Library System Foundation, Sooner Theatre ofNorman and the Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma.

HB 1895 has been assigned to the House of Representatives Rules Committee, though its unlikely that it will receive a hearingthis year. Several lawmakers criticized the bill, saying that economic development and cultural d evelopment go hand-in-hand,and that a culturally rich and diverse state will attract young people to start families and businesses in the state.

    --------

In addition to HB 1895 and HB 2850, the Oklahoma Legislature has hundreds of bills ready for consideratconvene on February 3. As you can imagine, some are good, some are bad and some are just ugly.

Senate Bill 2116, authored by Sen. Connie Johnson (D-Forest Park), proposes that people 21 and olderpossess up to five marijuana plants and up to one ounce of marijuana. The bill also calls for the establishment marijuana shops.

During 2012, Washington state and Colorado legalized marijuana, and officials in Colorado have collected$67 million in taxes from marijuana dispensaries to date.

Senate Bill 1473, also known as the Piers Morgan Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms WithoAct, was proposed by Sen. Nathan Dahm (R-Broken Arrow). If passed, this would allow citizens 18 and older tloaded or unloaded guns without the need for a license.

Rep. Mike Turner (R-Edmond) has proposed legislation to ban all marriagein Oklahoma. Just daysruled that Oklahomas ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional, Turner proposed legislation to ban all marrkeeping same-sex marriage illegal in Oklahoma.
