Knights of Columbus of St.
Mark Parish, Plano Texas
Grand Knight’s Message
Sadly, we lost one of our long-time Brother Knights
recently. Tom Voz passed away on June 4, 2012, at the
V.A. Hospital in Bonham. Tom had been there for about a
year thanks to the efforts of several parishioners, most nota-
bly our own DGK Bill Butcher. Tom was 82 and had been a
Knight since March of 1988, achieving his Third Degree.
He was in charge of our Council’s Prison Ministry for some time. Tom was very
active at St. Mark’s over the years, having been a Sacristan and a Eucharistic
Minister among other roles. Tom often subbed for me when I was traveling. Tom
has been interred at the DFW National Cemetery. Fr. Cliff has scheduled a Me-
morial Mass for Tuesday, August 29, at 1:00PM. Please keep Tom and his fam-
ily in your prayers.
On a happier note we look forward to the return of Jake Fleischer to
Council 6065. Jake has been absent from the Council for eight years, having
been transferred to New Jersey. He has started the transfer process from his
Council there and will be back in our midst in the Spring and we will be ready to
welcome him back warmly. Sort of a variation on the Prodigal Son parable.
We also celebrate Kenneth Durbin’s Major Degree accomplishment on
Saturday, August 25, at Our Lady of the Angels in Allen, TX, along with 27
other Knights from 10 councils. What is notable is that Ken just made his First
Degree a few months ago and is moving forward in the Council, volunteering
for many functions already. It’s that dedication that we love to see and try to en-
courage in all our newest Knights. Ken is a great example to them.
As previously reported, F.S. Greg Fisher is sending out ―Intent to Sus-
pend‖ letters to some 30+ dues-delinquent members of our Council. We haven’t
even officially received our Star Council Award yet and already are seriously in

jeopardy of not repeating. With a goal of 19 new members for 2012-13, the chal-
lenge more than doubles with these potential losses. Let’s all do our best to en-
courage any of these members we know to step up to their responsibilities and get
current. We all need to make a point of asking a non-member to consider joining
every week we are in church or at one of the parish events. It is a well-known fact
that many current Knights joined when asked, because no one ever asked them
previously.
The St. Mark Community Carnival is getting closer and besides our role of
running the Bingo event, the Knights will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs all
three days. Michael Brennan is chairing the cooking part of the program and is in
need of several sets of workers. Please respond to his sign-up requests at the up-
coming meetings, as well as to John Patterson’s for Bingo. This Bingo event,
while benefitting the church and the school, will be a great precursor to our next
one on January 26. We hope to gain a lot of additional ―daubers‖.
I was so pleased to be able to attend the opening-day Mass for St. Mark’s
School, beginning its 30th year. Bishop Farrell joined Fr. Cliff and the entire
clergy of St. Mark’s to offer Mass for the children and to then bless the brand new
school entrance. Even Sister Gloria, the Superintendent of Catholic Schools for
the Diocese, joined the occasion. Personally, I am always extremely moved when
all the students are in the church, filling most of the pews, and by the wonderful
children’s choir we are privileged to hear.
The new Directory/Handbook is out and it is the best ever, thanks to Rudy
Profaizer’s efforts. If you haven’t picked yours up yet, come to the September 6th
Business Meeting and get one. It is packed full of important information. Rumor
has it that many of our Council members haven’t read it from cover to cover.
They are missing a lot of ―good stuff!‖
Entertainment Passbooks are now in the hands of many people thanks to the
expert sales techniques of a number of Knights, but we need to sell a lot more.
Remember, these sales are currently most significant contributor to our revenue.
This year the addition of the ―squares‖ attached to iPhones is allowing credit card
sales, which erases one of the excuses we often hear – ―I didn’t bring my check
book and I don’t have any cash today….Do you take credit cards?‖
ProLife activities are heating up with the Hike for Life schedules coming out
now. Randy LeGrand will be reporting on all of this and we need everyone to
participate, not only in the Hikes but by volunteering to join the prayer groups
outside the various abortion centers. Until you have done so, you will not know
the special feeling that comes from having been there.

Attendance at the Business Meetings has fallen off recently. Could be summer
vacations taking a toll. Well, school is back in session. Look around and think
about your Brothers who usually sit by you, and join you for social hour after-
ward. When did you see them at a meeting last? Give them a reminder call.
There is strength in our numbers!

MORE INDIVIDUAL SALES EFFORTS
NEEDED TO ATTAIN PASSBOOK GOAL
Entertainment Book sales for the 2013 edition are lagging behind those for
the 2012 version, according to project chairman "Passbook Rudy" Profaizer. Af-
ter TWO weekends of selling after Masses at St. Mark's, the total number of
books sold is 107, which compares to 161 copies sold last year, and that was ac-
complished with only ONE weekend of selling after the Masses. Along with the
individual sales by Brother Knights, the total books sold YTD is 144, which again
is even less than the one weekend's total in 2011.
Passbooks sales have been our Council's largest single fundraiser and even
though we have enjoyed success with our first-ever Bingo Knight, the Council
needs to continue to put a lot of effort into "individual" sales of the book. As be-
fore, any Brother Knight who sells 15 books will receive ONE free book for his
efforts. In addition, the Council will hold another "after-the-Masses" sale at St.
Mark's during the weekend of Sept. 8-9. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at
the September business meeting and YOUR Council needs YOUR help to make
this a successful sales event. Too often in the past, it has been the same group of
members doing the work; perhaps this time YOU will sign up and join in the ef-
fort. "Passbook Rudy" is only asking you to give up 30-45 extra minutes out of
your Sunday morning...... come 15-20 minutes BEFORE the start of the Mass you
normally attend to help sell to those attending that preceding Mass and to the
"early arrivers" for your Mass, then stay 20-25 minutes AFTER your Mass ends to
sell to those leaving and for those coming to the next Mass. Rest assured, it will
be a fun and engaging experience as you get to know more of your Brother
Knights and get to interact with the many friendly parishioners of St.
Mark's. And you will help YOUR Council.
There will be two additional "after-Mass" sales, one during the weekend of
Oct. 13-14 and our final sale, featuring the Christmas gift-wrapped books on Dec.
1-2. And, "Passbook Rudy" has prepared a brief summary sheet highlighting
many of the benefits of the 2013 Entertainment Book. A copy of this summary
was sent out in a broadcast message in late August.... and if you can't find yours,
the solution is EASY.... just call Rudy at 972-424-7326 and tell him your email
address and you will receive a personal copy, suitable for printing.... and then
YOU can be fully armed with all the information needed to sell PASSBOOKS to
your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and even strangers off the street.
Assisting "Passbook Rudy" on the committee are Roger Knott, Mike Reis-
inger, and Darrel Sharpe.

Kenton Kravig, he of the melodious voice and the coordinator of music and choirs for
St. Mark, stops by to examine a Passbook --- oops, an Entertainment Book--- from the
dynamic sales team hard at work during the second week of sales of the book. Also
show (l-r) are David Wolf, MR. KRAVIG, "Passbook Rudy" Profaizer, Jim Rizzo,
Jim Bowling, and Pete Maurer. And, NO, the group did not demand a "private con-
cert" from Kenton before allowing him to buy a book!
The new signage depicts the name change to ENTERTAINMENT PASSBOOK as
our Council adapts to the new name for our renown "Passbook". The Council thanks
Doug Heckman for providing the new signs!

firm was one of the primary contractors that turned a "basic bank
building" into our meeting room and many other rooms and areas into
what is now the St. Mark Parish Center.
Dave Bruggeman (right) is presented with a special recruiting pin from
District Deputy Danny Kendall for his work in bringing new members
