It’s April!
Welcome to the first full
month of Spring - and we
know what that means.......
Well, I guess it means a
number of things really. First
of all, Windseekers begins
April 13th! So, as we go into
this first week of April, I hope
you all have your boats ready
to go for the next 25 weeks..... As a warm up and to jog all
of our memories a bit, our rules seminar will be on Wednes-
day April 6th at 6:00. Location to follow!
I guess it could also mean that the Daffodils are blooming
and that we are about to embark on the annual TYC Daffo-
dil Weekend April 15-17. To date, I know of eight boats
going.... but, that should not slow anyone from driving down
for the festivities. Go to Tacoma Yacht Club's website and
look at all of the activities planned. Hope to see many of
you there.
We (well, I should say Joe Salz) have completed the outfit-
ting of our new Romeo Charlie. As I write this, it's just a
few hours away before we launch it for the first travel to its

summer home at Tyee. I cannot wait to see it on the wa-
ter for its first race......
And folks, that is just the first two week......
We have the Single/Double handed race on April 23rd.
So - get your crew ready (Yeah, I know, you only need to
find one at the most, but you really need that one to
count!)
Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day is just around the cor-
ner as well....
Folks, that is a lot of activities. Be sure to have your
boats up for the challenge. Get that maintenance done
and make sure everything is ready to go. If you have
issues remember - your fellow club members are always
there to lend a helping hand, maybe some encourage-
ment, or help you celebrate a job well done!
On Gardyloo, we just had our reconditioned backstay
adjuster returned after three weeks, which has kept us
off the water. But in the mean time, I figured out our
plumbing and electrical systems and am starting to get
the hang of this big boat thing..... Ready to hit the course
and the cruises.......
I know this is a bit short this month......but like many of
you, there are a lot of chores to get done before we can
stat maxing out the fun meter..... so get it done and we
will see you all on the water very soon.

April Fool's day finds Cool Kat on
the hard. The mizzen is pulled,
lying by the boat, AND.. of course
the weather is fantastic. Did
March come in like a lion? It defi-
nitely went out like a lamb. Can't
complain too much .. nice weath-
er for working on boats too.
Turns out; this time of year, you run into a lot of people you
know here. You also meet new people. I am once again
reminded of how close the boating community really is. My
neighbor is working on rewiring his mast. Typical of boats,

Thinking Outside the Club
Every once in a while I think to
myself, “Am I doing enough that
doesn’t benefit only me?”
In younger years we were ex-
tremely active volunteering at
church, coaching youth teams,
we even sponsored a refugee
family (in our home no less.)
Then one just gets - well - tired!
You find how much more time you have when you just do
what you want. And then that question pops up again, “Am
I doing enough that doesn’t benefit only me?”
I know it may sound crazy, but if you’ve been paying atten-
tion this year, all of our general meeting speakers have
been talking about things outside the club. Sort of, are we
doing enough that doesn’t benefit just our club? I mean,
that’s par of what this yacht club thing is all about - if you’re
a Corinthian Yacht Club anyway. Are we contributing to the
sailing community around us?
We’ve learned about the Adventuress and how to be in-
volved with her mission. We’ve met Wes with the Foss Wa-
terway Seaport and heard what they are doing to teach and
celebrate our maritime history. Last month we heard from
Laird Hail and Katlyn Goodheart about the Vessel Traffic
System and how it keeps our waters safe.
And we’re not done. Out our April meeting we’ll hear
from Tarin Todd of the Citizen’s for a Healthy Bay and
learn about how to be involved with derelict vessels in
our waters. Finally in May, we’re hosting Daniel Lochner,
Skipper on the SSS Odyssey, our local Sea Scouts sail-
ing ship.
But listening isn’t being involved. The ladies, in the midst
of all of their planning, have set a goal of sponsoring a
young lady for a week on the Adventuress (that’s $500!)
They’ve issued a challenge to the men to do the same.
Talk to Valerie McKay. Cindy Craig is busy with The
Mountaineers and their sailing wing amongst other sailing
related activities. While the Lovely and Gracious Mrs. St.
John and I will be serving our third season as sailing in-
structors with the Tacoma Women’s Sailing Association
(TWSA.)
That’s the Corinthian way!
Spreading the love and knowledge of safe sailing. Per-
haps it’s time for you to ask that question, Am I doing
enough that doesn’t benefit only me?” Look for those
opportunities. Heck! Look inside the cover of The Main-
sheet. There are still open positions. Volunteer on the
NEW Romeo Charlie. Help Eric out with PHRF and other
acronyms! Sailing is great - that’s why we do it. Be in-
volved supporting the sport and taking care of the beauti-
ful grounds that we sail in.

it could be going better. While assisting him, we talk
of his plans and goals. He is readying his Tartan 37
for he and his wife's adventure "south". I tell him he
should meet the owner of Discovery, Billy Carter.
Billy shows up about then and I introduce him to
Ivan. So now that community has grown again. Ivan
now knows some one who snowbirds in southern
Mexico.. a place to stop and stretch your land legs.
I reflect on how "my community" has grow since be-
ing accepted by the CYCT some four years ago. The
trip has been an excellent adventure. So grow that
community and encourage others to joins us. We all
gain from the new faces and experiences.

Racing
WE ARE ALMOST THERE!!
Racing starts April 13,
skippers meeting at Tyee II
1800 hours, first warning
1855.
Your Racing Committee
accepted delivery from Joe
Salz of our new Romeo
Charlie. We took her for a
test run last Saturday. Pretty impressive. She will do over
20 knots and maneuvers nicely. I am excited about a new
season with this new asset. You and see her at Tyee II
from the club house deck. A great job will done Joe Salz.
Earlier in mid - March I attended the USCG/Yacht Racing
meeting at 48* North. I was disappointed that only two
Yacht Clubs attended. CYCS Sandpoint and CYCT. To our
benefit our attendance was recalled from last year. I
discussed our dilemma of having to file permits for races
135 days prior to a race only to find the filed course does
not relate to the race day wind conditions. I did learn that
there is some limited flexibility. I will attempt to
incorporate this new information into our racing program.
Finally, we held our Racing Rules of Sailing Seminar last
Wednesday, April 6th at the TYEE II Club House. This
was a late change of venue. We introduced new
information being enacted for this season. Please check
out the 2016 CYCT Race Book and General Sailing
Instructions - . Then come out Wednesday for RACING.
Also coming up April 23rd the Spring Singlehand /
Doublehand. Lets get to it!
Lets go Racing!

PHRF SAIL MEASUREMENT WORK
PARTY
A big part of any PHRF rating is
getting the right measurement for
either a plus (slower) or minus (faster)
adjustment to the standard base
rating for your boat. Unfortunately,
measurement of sails is not easy, and often measurement
is based on information from sail makers, previous owners,
and any other source available other than getting out the
tape measure. And at times, this information is not
accurate. Also, sails are often replaced without considering
changes in sail size that may affect the boats rating.
To ensure sails are rated for their proper size, CYCT will
conduct a sail measurement work party starting at 10:00
am on Saturday May 21st at Dan Walkers warehouse
(1524 45th St, Suite # 101, Sumner). If the workshop is
successful, Eric Nelson, President PHRF, will look at
establishing this procedure for all PHRF Clubs.
At the March 11th CYCT General Meeting, we will select
three boats at random from the CYCT boats that currently
hold a PHRF rating. These boats will be required to bring
their largest spinnaker and jib to the measurement work
party. Also, if anybody not drawn at random wants to
check the measurement of their sails, please bring them to
the work party. if you cannot make this date, give me a call
and we will pick up the sails from you for measurement.
We did not include mains because of the difficulty of
removing from the mast. But, if you want your main
measured, bring it along. After measurement, any
adjustments, faster or slower, will be made to your rating.
We will provide hot dogs on the grill and some liquid
refreshment for the hard task at hand.
For anybody that currently does not have a PHRF rating,
this would be a great time to bring your sails in for
measurement and join the fun and challenge of PHRF
racing. Connie and I learned a lot about our boat and
sailing through competitive PHRF racing that contributed
more than anything else for having us and our boat ready
to go offshore. Reaching with that chute in 15 knots or
downwind in 20 to 30 knots of breeze gets you ready for
what to expect when you turn left at Neah Bay or right at
Port Hardy.

The View From the Rear (Musings of a Casual Racer)
Still it grew and grew and grew some more
Enough I said! This is war!
I’ll claw, I’ll fight, I will persist
This is the green apocalypse
I’m not talking a small altercation
I’m talking total annihilation
I assembled all my tools of war
From the grocery and the hardware store
Soaps and cleansers, bleach and then
My secret weapon, Barkeeper’s Friend
Bucket, hose and lots of rags
brushes, more brushes and scotchbrite pads
I put on shorts, I bared my toes
And thus prepared I faced my foe
I started on the cabin top
I scrubbed and scrubbed and did not stop
First I tried the Simple Green
Which is how I usually clean
Then on my knees I crawled the deck
Attacking every single speck
Attack attack attack again
With stiff brush with Barkeeper’s Friend
The tide was turning, there was no doubt
Until the Barkeeper’s Friend ran out
Still I didn’t stop and I didn't cry
I’ll fight this fight till one of us dies
Hours later, last rays of light
I declared that I had won the fight
My back a mess, my knuckles bleeding
I had stopped the spores from breeding
Finally content, I poured a drink
Put up my feet and dared to think
Of summer when the green stuff goes
Below water on the hull to grow
Ken St. John
S/V Naughty By Nature
I know where the green
stuff grows
Last weekend I spent the
best part of a Saturday
doing that rite of spring -
scrubbing all of the winter
growth off of the boat. Of
course I’d already done
that in February but that’s
beside the point. I’ve
written a poem to
commemorate this solemn event.
I know where the green stuff grows
On station bases, on whisker poles
In every crack, in every crevice,
A greener green than kale and lettuce
I grows where i thought nothing did
In interstices of non-skid
It grows on teak and fiberglass
it grows like lightning, It grows fast
It grows and grows and grows and grows
It clogs up all the limber holes
even lines laid on the deck
Will turn to green - Now what the heck!
The dodger, every canvas piece
Displays this special verdigris
The green stuff even coats the stitches
Those polyester sons of bitches
Or maybe Dacron, I don’t know
I just know where the green stuff grows
Even bits you thought were clean
Display a shadow of the green
It was just last month I washed the boat
A winter’s day with rays of hope
But no soon had I turned my back
That lousy stuff had all grown back
Grown back and even multiplied
And grown some more - I almost cried
