Mainspring Digest School to Church September 2018 Nurture ~ Empower ~ Inspire Miramonte’s 8th Annual Walk-a-Thon On Friday, September 21st, one hundred twenty-five students enjoyed a day in the sunshine as they walked, ran, and skipped their way around the track, and helped their school at the same time! It was a great day, as parents, grandparents, and friends joined Miramonte staff and Home & School Leader Rose Shimizu to provide healthy snacks and water, fun things to do (like crazy hair and Camp Wawona’s Rock Wall), and a wonderful time for our school community to strengthen our bonds together. 2018 marks our 8th annual Walk-a-Thon, and thanks to all of the school families soliciting sponsors, the funds from this event have been a tremendous support. Classrooms have new carpets, play areas have been upgraded, and technology has been greatly expanded with Chrome books and tablets - just to name a few of the blessings. While the results of this year will not be known for a few weeks, prior years have resulted in approximately $25,000 per year! In so many ways - healthy activity, school community time, financial support - we have been blessed! You’re Invited . . . Upcoming Events Oct. 1-5 Fall Week of Prayer Oct. 14 Fall Festival ! What makes events like the Walk-a-Thon a success? While the faculty and staff are awesome dedicated professionals, many excellent activities would not get off the ground without the dedication, hard work, and loving support of our volunteers. Many are unsung heroes (like Wendy Weber and Laurin Pestes). One hero who is a leader and volunteer recruiter is Rose Shimizu. She and her big team of volunteers (the picture only shows some of our volunteers) successfully produced our amazing 8th Walk-a-Thon. It is so encouraging to see so many happy parents and supporters taking time to help the school and bless our students. Indeed, our volunteers make the miracles keep on coming! The Principal’s Olweus Bullying Prevention Program at Miramonte Training for Staff: Miramonte has been sponsored again for the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program because of our commitment and implementation of the program. This includes training for the staff; on October 29th, Olweus trainers will lead the whole Miramonte staff to review and refine the process of preventing bullying on campus. It teaches the children to have empathy and compassion, which fits so well in with the Christian principles that are also taught at school. Comparing surveys from when Miramonte started the program until recently indicates that the number of instances have dropped since starting the program. We are glad to be an Olweus school. 8th Graders Application Each week the 8th grade will be having a class meeting to discuss various topics included in our Olweus Anti-Bullying program, make decisions regarding eighth grade activities/graduation, and participate in activities to develop personal growth. The students will be using the book, The 6 Most Important Decisions You'll Ever Make: A Guide for Teens by Sean Covey as an outline for our activities and discussions. The book covers topics such as "academic stress, parent communication, media bombardment, dating drama, abuse, bullying, addictions, depression, and peer pressure, just to name a few.” ~ Ronna Sato, 8th grade Teacher. Sunday, October 14, 2018 12:00 - 3:00 pm Rose Shimizu, H&S leader, welcomed all to the Walk-a-Thon, followed by prayer and inspiration from Mt. View Central’s new Pastor, Dr. Shion O’Connor. Miramonte Cares about our Community Miramonte was one of a number of groups who had the chance to take care of our environment and help out the homeless people who shelter in our area. Mrs. Sato and her colleagues Miss Melbourne and Mrs. Hite lead a group of students to help with International Coastal Cleanup Day. Thanks to their efforts, there will be less trash on our lands and in our waterways, plus our homeless have a nicer place to live now. God must be smiling!
