SECTION 2 - SAFETY

The equipment supplied is manufactured in accordance with standards in support of

the Machinery Directive, and in compliance with Supply of Machinery (Safety)

Regulations for the prevention of accidents. Consideration has been given to theapplication for which the equipment has been designed.

Safety devices have been installed to protect both the operator and the investment in

the equipment. Operators and maintenance personnel should make themselves

familiar with the safety equipment, so that if the necessity arises, they can react

quickly, if there is any danger to personnel or equipment.

NO MODIFICATION TO SAFETY DEVICES IS PERMITTED

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS FOR ACCIDENT PREVENTION

1.  Operators and maintenance personnel who work on the Powered Belt Bends

should comply with the instructions below in order to create a safe working

area for personnel and equipment.

2.  Keep the Powered Belt Bends clean, remove debris and material deposits.

Clean equipment and installations increase safety for everyone, cleanliness

also improves the reliability and life of the machine.

3.  Safety devices should be maintained in good working order. NO

MODIFICATION TO SAFETY DEVICES IS PERMITTED.

4.  Guarding ensures safety. Removal of guarding is permitted for cleaning ormaintenance. Power to the equipment is disconnected, to provide safe working

conditions. It is forbidden to use machinery with no guarding installed.

5.  Cleaning and lubrication of machines is carried out when the equipment is at

standstill. All drives are shut-down, except where a controlled cleaning

procedure, by competent personnel, requiring motive power is being carried

out.

6.  Maintenance repairs, inspection or alteration of compressed air, or electrical

circuits must be carried out by competent personnel trained for such work.

They must be aware of and work to, all local and national safe working

procedures. Ensure power to the equipment is disconnected.

NOTE: If employees have difficulty in understanding or interpretation of the above

points, it is Managements responsibility to draw their explicit attention to and

provide special instruction in safe working procedures.

SECTION 3 - MAINTENANCE

As with all machinery, maintenance intervals and requirements depend largely on operating

conditions and may be affected by adverse conditions such as:

•  Wet room / power wash application

•  High speed operation

•  High operating temperatures

•  Product handled

•  Incorrectly sized belts

•  Poor routine maintenance.

TYPICAL MAINTENANCE INTERVALS

All nose rollers and drive bearings do not require any maintenance throughout their life. For

geared motor units follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions / recommendations.

Weekly (Routine) Maintenance

1.  Inspect the belt for signs of wear or damage – replace if necessary.

2.  Clean return rollers (where fitted).

3.  Empty belt scraper tray (where fitted).

4.  Check the slackness in the peripheral chain at the drive end on its return whilst

running. Adjust if necessary with the chain tensioner. Do not over tension!

Monthly Maintenance

1.  Weekly maintenance routine.

2.  Check position of chain tensioner and shorten the chain if required.

3.  Inspect peripheral chain to check whether or not lubrication is necessary (lubrication

intervals will vary depending on speed and frequency of use).

4.  Check drive bands – replace missing / broken bands.

5.  Brush any dust or product away from the motor cooling fins to allow proper cooling.

Six-Monthly Maintenance

1.  Weekly maintenance routine.

2.  Monthly maintenance routine.

3.  Inspect motor drive for wear.

4.  Thoroughly brush grease into the links and rollers on the outer radius chain.5.  Remove top guards and clean out any product that may have accumulated.

6.  Inspect peripheral drive chain sprockets for wear and tear, replace if necessary.

NOTE: For optimum performance of the powered belt bend, and to prolong the life of

the peripheral chain, it is important check the chain and re-grease when

necessary. This can be done via the attached nipples located on the outside

radius of the bend. Failure to do so could result in damage to the chain and

subsequent damage to the powered belt bend.

SHORTENING THE OUTER RADIUS CHAIN

This operation is required when the chain tensioner travel is exhausted. To restore maximum

travel it is necessary to remove links from the chain.

1.  Remove the top guards.

2.  Remove the chain tension completely.

3.  Every 1524mm (5’-00”) two half links have been fitted. The half links can be

removed to shorten the chain length. Removing links will reduce the bobbin pitch –

this will not effect the operation of the powered belt bend. However, taking out more

links will lead to uneven belt tension which could lead to puckering.

4.  Always fit the spring clips or split control pins on the outside radius of the chain.

5.  Re-tension the chain. Do not over tension.

6.  Re-fit the guards.

REMOVING / REPLACING BELTS

Isolate the electrical supply. If scaffolding or ladders are required ensure that they are safely

secured.

1.  Loosen and remove the screws for the guard on the internal radius. Remove the inner

guard. On the smaller units an inner guard may not be fitted.

2.  Slacken off the jacking bolts on the inner radius.

3.  Remove the plastic edging strip from the outer guards if fitted

Page 15: Maintenance Manual 90 Degree Bend WO 11244

4.  Loosen and remove all screws from the outer guard.

5.  Remove the upper case of the outer guards.

6.  Remove the belt loops from the chain on the upper side (the loops should remain

attached to the belt). In most cases, it is only necessary to remove the upper guards

and move the belt forward by half a belt length to gain access to the belt loops on the

underside. If the chain cannot be moved the lower guard should be removed and the

remaining loops unhooked.

7.  Reduce the tension of the chain.

Page 16: Maintenance Manual 90 Degree Bend WO 11244

8.  Once the tension has been taken out of the chain the roller ends can be raised –

(smaller units are not fitted with lift up ends).

9.  Remove the belt from the chassis, pulling towards the centre of the bend (inner

radius).

Belt Replacement

Mount the new belt in the reverse order of the removal procedure. Remember to tighten the

chain tension. Note: Check the tension of the chain – do not over tension. If necessary

lubricate the chain (if auto-lubricators are fitted check the level).

Check that all of the guards are clear of the belt before performing a test run.
