Nawaz Sharif quits ruling coalitionISLAMABAD, 25 Aug—

Former Prime MinisterNawaz Sharif pulled hisparty out of Pakistan’sruling coalition onMonday, a move likely toconcentrate power withparties seeking to preservePakistan’s alliance withthe United States.

He has been in disputewith the country’s biggestparty, the PPP, over whoshould be the nextpresident.

Sharif said he iswithdrawing from the 5-month-old alliancebecause it failed to restorejudges ousted by ex-President Pervez Mu-sharraf or agree upon aneutral successor to theUS allied strongman.

He blamed the main

ruling party of Asif AliZardari for the breakup, and named a retired judgeto run against him in the6 Sept presidentialelection.

However, he vowedto play a “constructive”role while in theopposition. “We don’twant to be instrumentalin overthrowing anygovernment. We don’thave any such intentions,”Sharif told a news con-ference.

Mr Sharif toldjournalists in Islamabadthat the PPP - led byBenazir Bhutto’s widowerAsif Zardari - had brokenpromises, in particularover the issue of thejudges. “When writtendocuments are repeatedlyflouted, trust cannotremain,” he said. “Wecannot find a ray of hope.”

The PPP fears that ifall the judges sacked byMr Musharraf get theirjobs back, they mayinvalidate an amnesty thatpaved the way for MrZardari and Ms Bhutto toreturn to the country lastyear. That would leaveMr Zardari open toprosecution on long-standing corruptioncharges.—Internet

JERUSALEM, 25 Aug— Israeli Prime Minister EhudOlmert will face the seventh round of police questioningthis week in the ongoing corruption probes that havebrought about his political downfall, local dailyJerusalem Post reported Sunday on its website.

The police are expected to recommend pressingcharges against Olmert next month, and Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz will then make a final decisionon the case, according to Jerusalem Post.

The Premier was questioned by national fraudsquad investigators at his official residence for threehours last Friday morning, which was the sixth timeOlmert has been interrogated so far since the “moneyenvelopes” scandal went public in May.

The two most recent police investigations centrearound allegations that Olmert improperly accepted fundsfrom Jewish American businessman Morris Talansky, and that the Premier double- and triple-billedorganizations for his trips abroad. The Prime Ministerdenies any wrongdoing in any of the cases, all tracingback to the period before he became Prime Minister in2006. Study shows prostate cancer riskincreased in obese men

Former Iraqi minister sentenced todeath for murder

India will not accept conditionson US N-deal

NEW YORK, 25 Aug —Use of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, especially long-term use, appears to raise the risk ofprostate cancer amongobese men, according tofindings of a new study.

“Given the epidemic ofobesity in the US and thefrequent use of statins, thepositive association weobserved raises substantialconcern as to the safety ofthese widely prescribedagents,” Dr Janet LStanford of the Fred

Hutchinson Cancer Re-search Centre in Seattle andcolleagues wrote in theAmerican Journal ofEpidemiology.

In a population-based,case-control study, theresearchers matched 1,001men with prostate cancerdiagnosed between 2002and 2005 with 942 age-matched cancer-free con-trols from King County,Washington. No overallassociation was observedbetween the risk of prostatecancer and the current or

past use of statin treatment.Duration of statin use wasalso not associated withprostate cancer risk.

“We also found noevidence that use of a statinwas associated with risk ofdeveloping more aggres-sive subtypes of prostatecaner,” Stanford said in aninterview with ReutersHealth. “Overall we foundno support for the currenthypothesis that statin usemay reduce risk of prostatecancer.”
