1 DAY On June 21st, from dawn through dusk, NYC will come together to ring in the first day of

summer on the longest day of the year with a celebration of music like no other…

400+ VENUES A “music holiday” that will bring our shared, outdoor spaces to vibrant life with free performances in public plazas, parks and community gardens; in front of restaurants, bars, shops and businesses; and in partnerships with cultural institutions across all five boroughs…

1,000+ CONCERTS A festival featuring performances representing every conceivable genre and style of music...

5,000+ PERFORMERS And a music holiday starring the amazing talents and melodic passions of local New Yorkers of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels–professionals, amateurs, students and newbies alike.

Many thanks to the thousands of musicians, the hundreds of host venues and the dozens of BIDS and presenting partner organizations that came together throughout the spring months to lay the groundwork for this one-of-a kind music holiday. It is through your efforts that Make Music New York has grown to become NYC’s largest one-day music festival. The 2017 edition includes concerts taking place from Hell’s Kitchen to Springfield Gardens, Queens and from Pelham Bay, Bronx to the South Shore of Staten Island. And it includes a staggering variety of musical styles. A small sampling of descriptions provided by artists includes “Balinese gamelan ensemble,” “an 11 year old banjo, fiddle, uke and accordion player,” “indie-pop your grandmother would love,” and even “a doomed spirit in rock star form.”

This season also continues the tradition of presenting a handful of special projects, details of which can be found in the highlight boxes spread throughout the guide. Returning favorites include some of our most popular series taking place at multiple locations throughout the city, like Mass Appeal concerts, Street Studios and Bird Chorus sessions. Also returning this season for the third consecutive year is an expanded edition of Concertos for Buildings in SoHo. Dynamic new programs include The Ella Fitzgerald Piano Bar in Harlem, Gérard Grisey’s Le Noir de l’Étoile at the AMNH, WTC @ WTC: The Well-Tempered Clavier at the 9/11 Memorial plaza and The Mp3 Experiment Number Fourteen in Battery Park.

This guide can help you to map out your day’s music journey, but it is just the start. Be sure to stay tuned to MakeMusicNY.org for the very latest additions and most up to date changes. And while you are on our site, sign up to receive our e-newsletters with the latest breaking news, including last minute rain plans when applicable. Or just use your senses. Look for the Make Music New York logo displayed at participating venues and follow your ears.

Most importantly, it is not too late for you to join the celebration and to make music yourself! Our Mass Appeals concerts

welcome artists of all skill levels to join in the fun–just bring your instrument. Meet us at one of the five stops along the mobile Ella Fitzgerald Piano Bar to sing your favorite Ella tune. Drop in on one of the Street

Studios to record your skills with the sidewalk as your stage. You can even learn how to sing along with

the birds in one of our Inside the Bird Chorus sessions. You can easily identify these “Open

Call” concerts by their icons as indicated above.

We look forward to celebrating with you across NYC this summer solstice!

Street Studios

At various times throughout the day, mobile record-ing studios will magically materialize on sidewalks throughout NYC. These “Street Studios,” a concept originated by Found Sound Nation, will be manned by producers/engineers ready to engage everyone who walks by to contribute sounds and music to the mix. Drop in with your voice or instrument, come prepared with a tune or improvise; our teams will be prepared for any soundwaves you throw their way!

To add to the fun, producers will mix down all the captured materials into succinct five-minute compositions to be unveiled at the annual “Street Studio Listening Party” held at the Bang on a Can office (80 Hanson Place, in Fort Greene Brooklyn) on Friday, June 23rd, from 7pm-9pm. All Street Studio contributors are invited to attend.

Special thanks to Moog for supplying free copies of their latest Model 15 synth modeler app to all producers.

Stop by any or all of these Street Studios and be sure to visit MakeMusicNY.org for any late additions.

Page 7: Make Music New York returns for its 11th Season! · 2019-02-08 · Make Music New York is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew

Make Music New York is proud to present Gérard Grisey’s Le Noir de L’Étoile, a rigorous and brilliant composition created for six percussionists playing to the rhythms of radio signals produced by pulsars. When pulsars were first discovered in 1967, these compact neutron stars were found to emit a beam of electromagnetic radia-tion that arrives in cycles as they spin, with the regu-larity of a metronome. Some pulse hundreds of times a second, but others are much less rapid and create a steady percussive sound when the radio telescopes are hooked up to loudspeakers.

Conductor Douglas Perkins leads an all-star ensemble in this special program, with a pre-concert talk on pulsars (12:30 pm) by Mordecai-Mark Mac Low, Curator, De-partment of Astrophysics, Division of Physical Sciences at AMNH.

Performers: Greg Beyer Fulbright Scholar, composer, educator, and “prodigiously talented percussionist” (Chicago Classical Review).

Tim Feeney Composer/performer, founding member of the quartet So Percussion, member of Boston’s Cal-lithumpian Consort, and performer with Rinde Eckert in the Pulitzer-nominated Orpheus X.

Ayano Kataoka Percussionist known for her brilliant and dynamic technique, as well as the unique elegance and artistry she brings to her performances.

Eduardo Leandro Artistic director of the Contemporary Chamber Players, the new music ensemble at Stony Brook University in New York, where he is also associate profes-sor in percussion.

Doug Perkins Described as “terrific, wide-awake and strikingly entertaining” by the Boston Globe and declared a “percussion virtuoso” by the New York Times. Doug founded So Percussion and the Meehan/ Perkins Duo and performs regularly with Signal, eighth blackbird, and countless others.

Ian David Rosenbaum Percussionist praised for his “excellent” and “precisely attuned” performances by the New York Times.

At Astor Place Plaza from 12:00-6:00 PM

In the spirit of inclusiveness, this summer’s Joe’s Pub Block Party is dedicated to voices from within the NYC immigrant and international population, featuring six world cultures that contribute to our city’s vibrancy.

12:00-12:45pmJose Conde Conde is a Cuban-American singer, song-writer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in Brooklyn who leads the genre bending Latin band Ola Fresca and his own solo project. His Ola Fresca album,  ELIXIR,  was dubbed “one of the best albums of the year” by Songlines UK. 1-1:45pmFumi Tanakadate & The Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Center EnsembleA native of Japan, Fumi Tanakadate is a Taiko artist and pianist.  With a unique combination of an extensive musical ex-pertise in European Classical music and a background in traditional folk dancing, drumming and flute playing from her lo-cal festival in Japan, she quickly became an active member of Néo, Watanabe’s ensemble that aims to blend the nostalgic sound of Japanese traditional festival and theater and the interplay of complex jazz improvisations.

2-2:45pmHervéEmerging onto the world stage is Hervé, a Haitian born singer, songwriter, and social activist whose voice and style pleasantly surprise the most astute as well as jaded musical ear. A sophisticated mélange of English, French, and Creole blend seam-lessly with influences of French Chanson, 90’s American alt-rock and 60’s Motown and soul. Combine all this with the likes of Jacque Brel, and Josephine Baker and voila! The audience experiences an ex-citing exotic blend of culture, voice and style.

3:00-3:45pmSvetlana & The Delancey FiveRussian-by-birth and American-by-music, Svetlana is “Astrid Gilberto via Moscow” (Guy Eckstine, Producer) and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s served at the 21st century Speakeasy” (Alan Young, Lucid Culture). Born and raised in Moscow, she grew up listening to American records on her hiss-ing “made in USSR” Melodia turntable before moving to the East Village in the late 90s without family or friends, drawn by the freedom of personal and artistic expression opportunities that NYC had to offer.  4:00-4:45pmVuyo SotasheYoung South African jazz vocalist, Vuyo Sotashe, is gradually making his mark in the jazz scene and internationally. He is the recipient of many awards, including a South African Music Award (equivalent to a Grammy), and was the first male final-ist in the history of the Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal Competi-tion 2015. His music is deeply influenced by South African Xhosa, gospel music and the vast jazz tradition. 5:00-5:45pmBataláBatalá New York is an all-female, female-led banda de percussao (percussion-based band) with a mission to promote and share Afro-Brazilian culture and women’s empowerment through the high-energy, visually stimulating performance of sam-ba-reggae drumming. The banda is part of Batalá Mundo, a global arts project of over 35 bands around the world with a common repertoire of music, costumes, and choreography originating in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. They have maintained a presence in NYC since 2012 and continue

to inspire and train women of di-verse backgrounds and levels

of experience.

The Well-Tempered Clavier at the 9/11 Memorial plaza from 4-7pm

In 1742, composer J.S. Bach completed the second volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier (know among pianists simply as “the WTC), a compendium of forty-eight preludes and fugues in every major and minor key. The music is beauti-ful, and runs the gamut of Baroque styles, from lively dance music to stately French overtures to thick counterpoint.

As part of Make Music New York’s 11th annual music holi-day, four grand pianos will be placed on the corners of the 9/11 Memorial plaza to allow for three continuous hours of performances by a rotating cast of dozens of pianists of all skill levels.

Performers include: Athena Adamopoulos, Kathy Chen, Larry Edoff, Melody Fader, Joan Forsyth, Leslie Dobrenski Frost, Alfredo Garcia, Jr., Vadim Ghin, Liam Kaplan, Kingsley Matthew, Blair McMillen, Barbara Podgurski. Lara Saldanha, Eleanor Sandresky, Qian Shen, Irene Tse, Jenny Undercofler, Anna Vinnitsky and the students of Joan Forsyth, Eugenia Glivinski, Adrienne Kim, Nathaniel LaNasa, Elena Leonova, Tatjana Rankovich, Gena Raps and Emily White.

Concertos for Buildings

Greene St, between Grand & Broome from 5-6:30pm

Back by popular demand for a third straight season, Concertos for Buildings is so big this year that we had to add an “s” to the end of its name. Taking over the entire block of Greene St. between Grand and Broome, historic buildings with hollow, cast-iron facades will serve as the resonant instruments for percussionists to perform five newly commissioned and reimaged compositions. This unique program stars both professionals and students from Mantra Youth Percus-sion and the Rahway High School Wind Ensemble.

“Concerto for Buildings” by Daniel GoodeA reworked version of the composition that launched the series in 2015.

“Cloud Noodles” by Lainie FeffermanA World Premiere

“Going Up” by Miguel Bolivar

“Quit While You Exist” by Devon Cupo

“When I See You Again” by Christian Rivera

“Drumming Part 1” by Steve Reich and “Marimba Quartet” by Daniel Levitan Mantra Youth Percussion closes out the program with these repertoire works. Directors: Joe Bergen and Jim Bogert.

Rahway High School Wind Ensemble is an audition-only curricular performing ensemble in the Rahway Public School System. Director: Miguel Bolivar.

At Battery Park from 7:00 (sharp)-8:00 PM

Mp3 Experiments, produced by Improv Everywhere, are free, open-to-the-public, participatory audio ad-ventures where attendees download a smart phone app and listen to synchronized secret instructions in a public space via headphones. Hilarity ensues as par-ticipants carry out coordinated, often ridiculous in-structions. Over thirteen years, the events, attended by diverse crowds and appropriate for all ages, have become a NYC institution and have attracted millions of views on YouTube.

In a very special collaboration with Make Music New York, The Mp3 Experiment Number Fourteen will de-but a new musical composition to be performed by thousands of participants on Boomwhackers, light-weight, color coded percussion tubes that are tuned to musical pitches by length. Park goers and passersby will be taken by surprise as a new music score is cre-ated before their eyes!

No amount is too small or too large to be a big help. A gift of $25 pays for the permit to stage one of our hundreds of programs in your local neighborhood city park. For those more plugged in, a $50 gift covers the expense of an amplified sound permit. A $100 gift helps with the expenses to print and display posters at our hundreds of venues. And a $500 gift offsets a portion of our insurance costs. More generous gifts help to create and sustain the many special projects sprinkled throughout this guide.

Please take a moment right now to invest in music makers of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels and to bring free music to neighborhoods all across NYC!

Thursday, December 21st will mark the seventh annual Make Music Winter, the winter solstice compliment to Make Music New York and a hallmark of the holiday season. To celebrate the longest night of the year, a dozen participatory musical parades and processions will sing, play and dance their way through the five boroughs of New York City.

Make Music New York is NYC’s music festival by the people and for the people! The Make Music New York team is busy putting the finishing touches on the 2017 edition of our annual music holiday and we need your help to get us over the finish line!

The day-long summer solstice celebration is inclusive, ambitious, un-predictable and fun–and we hope that you take pride in our collective achievements. As always, the festival is presented at no cost to our thousands of participating musicians and tens of thousands of spec-tators.

But although the festival is free to the public, it is not free to produce. There are many “backstage” expenses that must be paid, from the software and social media tools that allow us to reach and connect thousands of performers with exciting new venues, to the permits and insurance coverage that allow us to safely transform public spaces across all five boroughs into stages for New York City musicians. We are happy to be the roadies so that you can focus on performing or enjoying the 1,000+ offerings that we bring to life. All we ask is that you consider what Make Music New York does for music makers, music fans and our city at large and make a donation today. And because Make Music New York is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization, your donation is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

There are two simple ways to show your support with a financial contribution:

1) Visit our website at MakeMusicNY.org and click on the Donate tab to make a contribution via PayPal.

Our second favorite day of the year is only six months away!

Last season’s participants said of Make Music Winter:

“A gratis celebration for and by the public, democratic and international in execution and scope, couldn’t help but stir up a sense of camaraderie and admit — on the shortest day of the year, after months of political tension and dissension — a few hopeful, harmonious rays of light.”

“It’s like somebody’s dream of community.”
