Make Paper Snowflakes

Create six-pointed snowflakes with a round fluted coffee filter.

1. Flatten the filter and fold it in half.

2. Fold in half and pinch just near the corner, not the whole side.

3. Starting at pinch, fold over one third of the coffee filter. This is the challenging part and students may need help with this.

4. Fold the filter in half.

5. Fold in half again.

6. Cut out shapes from the sides. Unfold to reveal the snowflake.

Challenge capable students by asking them to cut out snowflakes with a recognizable shape like a snowman.

Support struggling students by giving them a paper clipped prefolded coffee filter.

Make Crystal SnowflakesCombine chemistry and meteorology by making borax crystal snowflakes!

For one snowflake, you will need: container for creating the solution, 4 T borax, a drinkingstraw, 24” string, white chenille stem, 400 ml of hot water (slightly more than one and a half cups)

Make the solution Pour 4 T of borax into very hot water and stir until the borax is dissolved. Allow the solution to cool slightly and pour into the cup.

Make the snowflakeNote: Our chenille stem is black for illustration purposes only.

Cut the chenille stem into three sections. One section should be slightly longer than the other two sections. Twist one piece around a second piece. Twist the long piece around these first two pieces. Manipulate them to create a six-sided star shape. Try to make the points even. Trimming them is OK.

Tie a piece of string to one branch of the stem about one-half-nch from the center. Wrap the string around each branch of the snowflake, connecting all the branches of the snowflake.

When you come back to the branch you started with, wind the string along the branch to an inch from the center. Wrap the string around each branch of the snowflake about an inch from the center, connecting all the branches of the snowflake.

Make a know the end of the string to make a loop. Hang the snowflake in the cup of borax solution.

Wait several hours and you will have a crystal snowflake!

Make a Virtual Snowflake

http://www.zefrank.com/snowflake/This site allows you to see the snowflake still, rotated two dimensionally, and three dimensionally.

http://www.addictinggames.com/createasnowflake.htmlThis site begins by folding and then cutting a virtual piece of paper into a snowflake following directions from the student. Students can save their snowflake and e-mail it to family or friends.

http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/symmetry/snow.htmClick in a grid of triangles to create a snowflake. Option–delete the grid and create a snowflake without it.

http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/symmetry/symm3.htmJust like the site above, with two triangular grids. Students can choose colors with this option.

Another Way to Make a Snowflake

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-3D-Paper-SnowflakeUse six sheets of paper to create a 3D snowflake.
