Post-Project Evaluation 1. Accomplishments and how grant funds were utilized during the grant period. This year the Heartland Maker Fest had 30 makers from all over Central Illinois, including the Champaign-Urbana Fab Lab, the Central Illinois Puppetry Guild, Hyve Touch Syntehsizer, and Royel Bijou. The makers exhibited a variety of projects such as building rockets, creating screen prints, designing board games, and constructing a quad-copter course. We estimate that 1700 people attended the Fest. The funds from the Urbana Arts Grant paid for space rental while our matching funds covered food for the makers, marketing, and miscellaneous supplies for the Fest. Most importantly, the grant allows us to hold the Fest free of charge to attendees. 2. The impact that the grant funds had on your artistic or organizational development. The Heartland Maker Fest allowed Makerspace Urbana to present the values of the maker movement to a wide and diverse audience. Our mission is to provide an open community lab where people of diverse backgrounds can learn, teach, tinker, collaborate, share, innovate, socialize, and create. The Heartland Maker Fest gave the entire community an opportunity to see that mission at work. We were also able to connect with other maker/hacker labs and artists from across Central Illinois. 3. The number of hours spent in completing the project, including planning, administration, promotion, production, and the final presentation. Between April 1, 2016 and April 1, 2017, volunteers spent approximately 400 hours planning, promoting and implementing the Heartland Maker Fest. This includes the work of the volunteer co-organizers who spent approximately 200 hours, the 30 makers who worked at least 5 hours on the day of the Fest (none received an honorarium and we did not track their hours prior to the Fest), and the 60 hours of work by volunteers who staffed the door, greeted attendees and helped set- and clean-up the Fest. 4. The number of participants in events or activities related to your grant project. Approximately 1700 community members attended the Heartland Maker Fest on Saturday, October 1, 2016. 5. Description of experience working with collaborating partners. Our collaborating partners, which included Acorn Active Media, the Champaign-Urbana Fab Lab, Dixon Graphics, the Independent Media Center, Oakland Public Library, Prominic.net, Weiskamp, and, of course, our makers, were all instrumental in helping us implement such a successful event.
