Can you tell us something about yoursel? How didyou discover that you love makeup?

My parents are very cultural; I was always surround-ed by lots o art, ballet, music and opera when I wasgrowing up. My grandather and my mother wereboth very artistic, so I guess some o that may haverubbed o on me.

For as long as I can remember (as a school girl andteenager), I was in love with ashion, magazines andobsessed with makeup, cosmetics and the skin. Ibought all the ashion magazines and wondered atthe apparent awlessness o the aces o the modelson the covers and beauty shoots - I grew up believ-ing that oundation was the answer to perect-look-ing skin. Even as a young girl I was an incredibleconsumer o cosmetics, always spending all o mypocket money and any ree time in pharmacies andcosmetic departments. I would buy and try all thedierent types o oundations and concealers, then

experiment on mysel to create awless skin.

I have had periods in my lie when my skin has beenantastically clear and other times when I had quite alot o blemishes. At those times when the skin is notperect, the oundation is really tested and I be-came increasingly rustrated with the ormulationsand colours that were available in the marketplaceat that time (80s- 90s). Te textures were either tooheavy or too light, and the colours were not yellow

enough or my own skin type - they were all too or-ange or pink-toned. Te result was a mask-like n-ish, skin that did not look natural and a ace that didnot match the neck and dcolletage.

As a makeup artist and always noticing a womensskin rst, I ound there were either women who woreoundation and inevitably it looked bad, and thosewho would not wear it because it looked too unnatu-ral. In my opinion the perect oundation did not ex-ist! Which is why I decided to create it

own career?

Te industry has changed somuch since I rst began as a

makeup artist there are somany exciting opportuni-ties and lots more publica-tions that need shoots; how-ever there is also much moreerce competition or thenew artist today. Unortu-nately a new ashion make-up artist needs to do a loto ree work and lots o testshoots to build their porto-

lio. You could easily spend ayear just doing ree work andthen subsidise this by work-ing at a makeup counter or

paid work (this will also be invaluable at experiment-ing with looks on many dierent aces). One o thebest things a new makeup artist can do is to assist agood working makeup artist to gain knowledge ohow things work on set its important to know aboutmakeup application, but you also need to learn make-up artist etiquette and build relationships. It is just asmuch about how you work in the team as how greatyour makeup is. Te models, the photographer, stylistand client all need to have condence in you, and youneed to have a calmness on set whilst being able towork super quickly i required.

Can you share the highlights o your career?

Tere have been many highlights along the way, andleading the way would denitely be launching myown brand, BECCA. As a makeup artist, it is always adream to create innovative products with textures andshades that you eel you need in your kit. I am veryproud o what we have achieved, and love that othermakeup artists and real women adore the products

too.Other highlights include: Hearing rom happy customers that they love

BECCA, and that it gives them the condencethat comes rom having awless, natural-lookingskin. I have received some extremely touching let-ters and emails over the years, and it makes me

very proud that a product I have developed hashad such a positive impact on their lives.

Winning highly coveted magazine beauty awards,and the products being used by A-list makeup art-

ists and celebrities, especially when I hear that ce-lebrities have personally visited a BECCA counterand actually purchased the products themselves.

What are the staple and avourite make-

up products in your personal makeup

bag? What products are worth the in-

vestment in your opinion?

In my own personal makeup bag I al-ways carry a Compact Concealer oremergency touch-ups, Boudoir SkinMineral Powder both these prod-

ucts mean I can create awless skini I was stranded somewhere with-out makeup! I always carry a Sheerint Lip Colour too, which is su-per nourishing lipstick that hasa hint o colour with a chic lowsheen nish, and a great packageto eel proud o when pulling outo your handbag.

What inspired you to create BECCAs Fall collection?

Te Lost Weekend Collection has a very Australianeel I was inspired by all the great holidays I havespent with my amily and riends. My parents havealways been all about nature and as a child we wouldoen go camping alongside a river. Tey own a holi-day house in the bush and most holiday times wewould escape there - winters are spent bush walk-ing, rugging up in Ugg boots and sitting by log res.oasting marshmallows with the kids, sharing choc-

olate and drinking wine. Te natural earthy coloursin this collection reect the browns and taupes omud, wood, wool blankets, drizabone oil-skin rain-coats, my avourite brown ugg boots, chocolateTe makeup is warm, velvety and slightly toastylooking.

What inspired you to create the summer BECCA col-

lection?

Tis summer I am loving the 70s hippie vibe It isan era that I am continually drawn to, and was theinspiration o the BECCA summer collection Hal-

cyon Days. Te term Halcyon Days reers to calm,peaceul days at a time when you were at your mostcareree and happy - or me this was as a child grow-ing up in the 70s. I remember my mother in her verycool 70s clothing, days spent around pools and play-ing in the garden wearing towelling string bikinis,and just eeling very ree and alive.

Tis collection brings together beautiul 70s in-uenced makeup that is more modern or todaysworld in the same way that Angus and Julia Stonesolky music is so right now (their song Yellow BrickRoad transports me back to the 70s and provided somuch inspiration or this collection!). Tis is a lookthat is so and eminine, easy and attering to wearwith upliing corals, pinks and bronzes teamed withkohl rimmed eyes or a cooler edge to the classic

summer look.

What colours in makeup would you suggest wearing

in summer?

Corals and pinks look wonderully resh on thecheeks and lips, pastels and brighter ruity shadeslook great on the nails, and bronzes and shimmeryesh tones work on the eyes. Slightly more shim-mery and luminous ormulations work better in thesummer than the winter.

you discover that you

love makeup?

Im obsessed with all orms o beauty and things thatare unique. I also have a huge appreciation or qualityand anything that represents authenticity. Accordingto my mother, I discovered my love o makeup at theage o our when I took my mothers lipstick, drew allover the living roomwalls, then attempted to eat the lipstick. My momsaid it was a day shes never orgotten.

Hourglass is a relatively new makeup brand and not

everyone is amiliar with it. So what products would

you recommend to those who never tried anything

rom the range? What are your personal avorite

Hourglass products?

Hourglass is a very special brand. I really wanted towork with a brand that was innovative, elegant andthat had a sense o awareness when it comes to add-ing the highest quality ingredients in their products.Each and every product either contains anti-aging

properties and/or leaves out harmul ingredients toultimately optimize the health o the skin.

I would recommend Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer,which preps skin beautiully or a awless makeupapplication. Tis primer is great because it can beused on both oily and dry skin. It provides mois-ture to dehydrated skin, lls in wrinkles and imper-ections and at the same time matties the skin. Itcontains an SPF 15, no parabens and its completely

water proo andsweat proo. And my avorite eature is that it pullsredness out o the skin - instantly neutralizing it. Itsultimately my#1 secret weapon when it comes toawless makeup.

I could mentionmany dierent achievements but atthe end o the day, Im just beyondgrateul to be doing something I tru-ly love to do and to be compensatednancially or it. Its truly a blessing-and I dont losesight o that or one minute.In terms o the most requested look,

it seems that most models, actorsand celebs request luminous skinand strong eyes.

What are the staple and avorite

makeup bag and in your kit? What

products are worth the investment in

your opinion?

Good brushes are a must. I cannotlive without my Hourglass takelonbrushes. Tey seriously are the best -i you walk into Sephora or Barneys,

just touch them. Youll know imme-diately that they are mandatory or any woman andmakeup artist. Quality brushes last a long time andthey are the key tools to creating the look youre tryingto achieve.

What inspired you to create the Fall Hourglass collec-

tion?

As much as Id love to take credit or the Hourglasscollection, the real genius behind the brand is Carisa

Janes. What I do is a collaboration. Carisa is the Ein-stein behind the line and Im so happy to be workingwith a woman who really understands what womenultimately want when it comes tobeauty, quality and looking their best.

Tis Fall, Hourglass is launching Script Precision Liq-uid Liner, a micro-ne elt tip liner. Its the ultimatein precision lining. And a new eye palette - Vol 6. which is a multi-palette eaturing six universally at-tering eye shadows - perect or creating an everydaylook.

Can you tell us something about yourself?

I was born in London near Sloane Square which isnot ar rom the trendy Kings Road.I spend a lot o time in London, where I still live, buthave also lived and worked in New York, Paris andMilan.I still travel a lot because o my job as a makeup art-ist and because I have my own makeup range DanielSandler Cosmetics.I love Asian and Oriental cuisine so when I am notworking I like to meet up with riends and go tomy avorite restaurants to enjoy either Sushi, Tai,Korean or Indian ood.

When did you discover your love for makeup?

When I was 14 I loved pop music and videos o-singers like David Bowie, Adam and the Ants,BoyGeorge, Visage, and Japan. Te singers were men and

they wore amazing makeup and I wanted to copythem and look antastic.

How long are you in the beaut indust already?

Nearly 25 years

What do you like the best about being a Make-UpArist?

I like the transormation that makeup creates onsomeone, not just models or celebrities, but anywoman or man.

Can you share what products are staple in your pro-fessional kit?

Naturally I have a lot o my own Daniel Sandlerproducts but in act I carry a small kit as you neverneed eveything you think you do.

I have ne tuned my kit so that it contains : Makeup brushes, Eyelash curlers and eye lash comb, Skincare and Clarisonic, Face Primer, 5 shades o oundation and concealer, 1 shade o loose and pressed powder, 4 shades o pressed blusher, 5 shades o Watercolour uid blusher, 1 shade o pressed Bronzing powder, 3 shades o creme blusher, 2 shades o creme Bronzer, 2 shades o ace highlighter, 12 eye shadows, 6 matte and 6 shimmery. 6 waterproo eye liner pencils, 2 Mascaras, 6 shades o lipstick, 3 lip pencils, 4 lip glosses.

Do you have any favourite beaut tips youd like toshare?

My most important tip is that it doesnt matter whatyou apply but make sure you always blend it verywell.

What advice can you give to all those aspiring Make-Up Arists?

Be a perectionist.Study everything to do withmakeup.Practice loads.Create your own styleRealise that the better the job,the less money you will earn.You will sometimes have towork or ree.Dont be lazy.Keep your kit clean.Remember that on a job youare part o a team, its not allabout you.

Daniel Sandlers suggestions for creating a MakeupArists Porfolio

First o, you need to think about what type o workyou want to do in the proessional arena. Reason be-ing, you will need to reect that in your portolio. Soi you only want to do high ashion editorial you willneed to have that makeup style in your book or i youwant to do Bridal work, then you will need to showwork that reects that, and so on, etc.

But i you want to be commercial and are capableo doing many dierent makeup looks then you will

need to put together a commercial set o pictures.Tis should cover Natural, Bridal, and Fashion work.Your work should look appealing to a large audienceso dont create extreme looks that wont appeal to cli-ents and customers.

Make sure that the photos are o good quality. Youwill only need 8-10 photos in the beginning to showyou are competent. As soon as your work is pub-lished you wont need to use so many tests shots. Donot have more than 2 shots rom a shoot, theres nopoint and it will just look like you are padding outyour portolio.

Make sure that the photographers, models, stylistsand hairdressers have had experience on shoots andare on the same wave length as you. Its important tomeet up beore hand and make a plan.

Make sure they photos are not retouched too muchas this will not show your work o.

Make sure your portolio is always clean. Have sparepages so you can change them when they get dirty.I you do not go with your portolio to an appoint-ment, always check it when it comes back to you justin case someone spilled coee or took a picture out.Tese things can happen.
