We had a wonderful board meeting in April. Many of the Unit Chairmen

were present and their input was greatly beneficial and appreciated. We also

had a special guest, Josephine Marner from the Prairie Association. Her input

was greatly appreciated and turned the direction of our project completely

around. Things we would not have thought about. Thank you all. Hope to have

everyone back again.

Mary Lou Younger

Hi Ladies I can't wait for the annual luncheon. Hopefully you all will enjoy the program.

The church ladies always prepare such a great meal. Please plan to attend. Also

don't forget Dorothy’s trip down to Arcola. She always makes it special for us.

We can't thank her enough for all the great trips she has scheduled.

Start thinking about getting rid of all that extra stuff for our annual garage

sale. Think how good it feels to let it go

Ladies, at the 2017 Annual Conference, Peggy Long the State Cultural

Enrichment Director handed out the directions for the new project of the year.

This year HCE is focusing on showing appreciation for the police and fire

departments. The project is crocheting little dresses for bears. You can give

these to the police and fire departments for kids in crisis, but remember to

always check to see if they want them. You could also use these for gifts for

battered women’s shelters, or even for the nursing homes. They usually have

bingo games and need prizes, or for gifts in the homes where they have no

relative to bring them gifts. Let me know how you use yours.

Sitting here enjoying the 70 degree weather and

spirit. Time to make plans for the summer. Remembering

that as a child I was so excited for this time of the year

knowing I would soon be on a summer break from

school. I'm looking forward to sitting on my swing on my

deck and just enjoying the breeze on my face and then it

will be summer and very hot out. I'm going to enjoy these

brief days of lovely weather.

I want to thank all the units that have contributed to

and helped with the group homes. Please send me a note

or call and let me know what you are doing, I know

everything you do is so appreciated by the

residents. Also, start gathering all those wonderful items

for our garage sale it's a great way to clear out our clutter

DEWEY/FISHER UNIT

Twelve members of the Dewey-Fisher unit met for their

regular meeting in April and welcomed their newest

member Elfrieda West, who was accompanied by her

daughter, Sylvia Elrod, who was visiting that day. Since

the lesson topic was a "heavy" one we began with a

"lighter" topic and had a short verbal quiz about comedy

in the early days of radio (1930-1950). The lesson about

"Difficult Conversations" prompted a significant amount

of response from the listeners. Membership Chairperson,

Melvina Heap, reported we now have 20 members in our

unit. Marge Probasco, 4-H Chairperson, reported the Four

Corners Cooking Club is using the kitchen at the Farm

Bureau building for some of their meetings. She noted the

club could use some financial help to underwrite the cost

of some of their projects. We will discuss further at our

May meeting. Eve reminded everyone that the deadline to

make reservations for Dorothy Rogers trip to the dinner

theater in Arcola is May 10th and the cost is $25.00 per

person. Transportation to that event is on your own. She

also took a head count of those attending the Annual

Meeting on May 3rd and reminded everyone that a check

made out to our unit for $20.00 needs to be given to

Virginia Welborn so she can send one check to the

Champaign office. Bobbi McEntire and Marge Probasco

were recognized for having over 1000volunteer hours

each. Bobbi McEntire is planning our special activity in

July and we will discuss it further at our May

The lesson was “Difficult Discussions” was discussed

by several members. We learned how important it was to

have funeral arrangement in order while all members were

alert and able to compromise such things as buried or

cremation, burial plot and as much paid down as possible

or worked out. Have all paper together and placed where

several family members can find them. It is important for

family to get together rand figure out how to dispose of

articles, sale, exchange or gifts. Most all to try hard to

cooperate and not leave had feelings in the family.

The annual meeting was discussed and several plan to

attend. Also discussed was the Unit’s trip planned to

Arcola, Il in June to the Wildlife park.

The minutes and treasurer’s reports were read and

approved. Donna Shirer gave the Cultural Arts report and

Sue Hesketh gave the 4-H report. Sharon Nielsen gave

the Family Issues report. It wasongrandparents.

Sometimes confusion come up between partners and

grandparents. She explain some. Refreshments were

called meeting to order with the Pledge to the Flag and the

H.C.E. Homemaker's Aim recited. Pat led us in singing

Joyce Smith gave the lesson, "Difficult

Discussions". In case of death, you should have a Health

Power of Attorney, and be sure your family knows what

your wishes and plans are for the funeral, they should also

know where your will is kept. You should have notes as

to what and to whom your possessions go to after you die,

place of burial, songs you wish to be sung, and

arrangements considered for your funeral. You should

also have a list of passwords, for computer, bank

statements, tax returns, etc. Everyone should have an up to

Last Will?" Eleven members were present. The minutes

and on their birthday, each one gets a balloon and a

birthday card. She gave Pat a bill for $30.99 for supplies

she's bought so far. The residents look forward to her

coming. Joyce made a motion and Judy Stahl 2nd the

discussed with members ways that we could volunteer to

assist the residents for our Volunteer Hours. Mary Piercy

gave the treasurer's report which was approved as read.

due by May 10th for Dorothy Rogers' trip to Arcola May

31st. Payment is also due by April 24th for those wishing

to attend the Annual meeting on May 3rd.

Our guest for this meeting was HCE Second Vice

Carol Froeschl who took a photo of our unit. It was nice

seeing you, Carol!

was decided that we should meet at Flesor's Candy

Kitchen in Tuscola.

lesson on "Difficult Discussions" was given by Nancy

Blackburn who had no difficulty at all.

After the meeting was adjourned, Anita Gilliland

served members refreshments. The raffle was won by

Joan O'Bryan, Bridgie Cler, and Elaine Aaltonen.

PHILO UNIT

Members of the Philo HCE meet on the second

Tuesday of every month at the Philo Library to sew pajama

pants for children in Urbana, Illinois’s Carle Hospital

The activity began in March of 2009 and they have recently

passed the one-thousand mark of pj’s.

That does not count the ones that have been taken in the

earlier years to St John’s pediatric unit in Springfield.

The pj’s help in encouraging patients to get out of bed

for exercise that aids in their recovery. They are less self-

conscious when they have the pj’s to go with the immodest

hospital gowns.

This is not ‘officially’ an activity of HCE but all but one

of the participants belong to Philo HCE and sometimes

members in other HCE groups in the county have

contributed material for the group.

one until she passed away. All four of us played cards

together. I lost my husband in 2001. After Marion's wife

passed away in 2008, he asked me to go eat with

him. Little did we know that we would get married

in 2010. I was a city girl and he a farmer - guess where

we live now? I'm trying to be a farmer's wife and I am

very happy. I joined H.C. E. in

2004. Millie Hoch was my sister-in-law. I have met a lot

of nice ladies in the H.C.E." Until next month,

In the Spotlight

Meet County Board Member Dorothy Rogers – Special Activities Leaving Southern Illinois in 1948 was the beginning of our travels. My

husband Don was employed by Chicago Bridge & Iron Company who built fuel storage tanks and nuclear reactors all over the

U.S. Traveling in a “Trailer” we were from Utah to Pennsylvania, South to Tennessee, North to Minnesota. Coldest place was

International Falls, MN, warmest Casper, Wyo. We enjoyed many historic sites—Glacier Park, Yellow Stone Park, Bad Lands,

Cody Wyo., real Wild West Rodeo’s, even panned for Gold. Sorta like a vacation all the time. Our Son’s Robert & David

attended many schools and did well. Always made welcome at a new school with report cards that followed with them.

In 1960, we bought a home in Tolono which brought Don close again with his Dad, who with another business man built the

Bowling Alley. I spent a lot of time there. We bought some property and started a couple of business, meant I had work to do, as

Don continued to travel. Our son’s, both married and stayed close in Champaign County. I have 4 grandchildren, and 7 great-

grandchildren. They are all so special.

I continue to travel with other “gals” and always have a great time. I belong to several organization, and help in many ways.

Joining Tolono HCE in 1982 by encouragement from a couple of gals, was a different direction in my life. Got very involved and

started planning the tours, then was “Illini Swallow Bus Lines”. Most of you can figures the years. Been awhile!!!

I thank all of you for our support in making this position on the board somewhat “easy” always enjoyable. My life has been

challenging—but far more full of Blessings. Dorothy
