The Sturgis Library Board of Trustees is pleased to welcome two new board members

Jackie Crowley grew up in Needham and spent a few weeks every summer on the Cape. She attended Wellesley College where she studied anthropology and archaeology. She worked in the Egyptian Department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and took several archaeological expeditions to Egypt. She then transitioned to the energy marketing business, working in Boston, New York, and Connecticut before making the move to Cape Cod. Jackie is active with Barnstable school activities and Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. She is an energy consultant and aspiring novelist. She shares a home on Old Jail Lane with her mother and daughter, and a crazy one-year-old cat named Ike.

Sheila Bearse was born and raised in Connecticut, and graduated from St. Raphael’s as an X-Ray Technician. She relocated to the Cape 40 years ago to start her family and fell in love with Cape Cod houses. She has been sell-ing real estate on Cape Cod for 30 years. When not showing houses, she enjoys sitting at Sandy Neck, working in her yard, and spending time with her grandchildren. She lives in Barnstable Village with her husband, John Crowell.

Letter from the President Sturgis Library Board of Trustees In the fall, the Board and staff met in an all-day session to begin to plan for the next five years. Our first task was to revisit the mission of the Library and update our Mission Statement. The revised statement was then used as the platform for de-veloping our goals for years FY2007 through FY2012. A community forum was held in November to gain input from the public, and more work was done with the Library Director and Planning Committee in order to submit a draft to the Board for their January Board meeting. Further refinement will be necessary, but we expect to share our goals, objectives, and activities in our next newsletter. I would like to offer the revised Mission Statement here, and would encourage you to share your thoughts:

The Sturgis Library, a historic public library in the village of Barnstable, has the dual responsibilities of preserving and promoting Cape Cod history while providing progressive library services to meet the needs of a contemporary community. The library strives to:

• Support the lifelong pursuit of personal, vocational, cultural and intellectual self-improvement • Foster literacy and creativity in residents of all ages • Promote the free exchange of ideas and serve as a community meeting place • Offer a gateway to dynamic technological resources and informational databases • Serve as a regional archive and research center for the study of Barnstable County history, genealogy, and

maritime culture On another note, we are pleased to report that we have appointed two new members to our Board of Trustees. They are Sheila Bearse and Jackie Crowley. Please see their profiles featured below. Our Burgundy Barge Raffle was a great success, raising $12,000, which surpassed our fundraising goal. We received positive feedback, and plan to offer a similar event in the next few years. Building on this success, the seven Barnstable libraries are sponsoring a joint fundraiser which will feature a cruise to Bermuda. Details about the trip can be found in this newsletter, on our website, or by visiting the library cruise page: http://www.mmpl.org/bermuda_cruise. Ellie Claus December 28, 2005
