Making Dreamers into Achievers

The mission of the I Have a Dream Foundation of BoulderCounty (IHAD) is to promote educational success and self-suffi-ciency for children (Dreamers) from high-risk, low-income back-grounds by providing both comprehensive support services to com-plete high school and assistance for further education. IHAD’s pri-mary goal is to motivate socio-economically disadvantaged youth tostay in school and create fulfilling lives through personal, academic, and vocational achievement.

Mission and Goals

Dreamers participated in an intensivetwo day college preparation camp at theUniversity of Colorado at Boulder. Theycompleted college applications, learnedabout financial aid, and used a computerlab to finish their college essays. Dear Friends and Supporters,

It is with great pleasure that we present to you our first "official" annual report for the I Have aDream® Foundation of Boulder County, Inc. (IHAD). This past year was one of the most suc-cessful in our nine-year history. It is a remarkable accomplishment that IHAD is now helping 187

low-income youth reach their educational dreams with plans to adopt two additional classes inLongmont and Lafayette within the next year.

Some of the organization's highlights for 1999 have been:

• IHAD doubled the expected graduation rate for the first class of 36 Boulder Dreamers and 81% of those graduates are now in college or vocational school.

• The second annual Dream-maker Luncheon was a great success. Over 200 people attended the event to honor Annette Taylor, founding board member, mentor and community leader. Colorado Attorney General, Ken Salazar was the inspiring keynote speaker.

• IHAD was selected to receive one of two Colorado GEAR UP partnership grants from the U.S. Department of Education. Grant partners include the City of Boulder Housing Authority, Boulder Valley School District and the University of Colorado. Linda Shoemaker and Steve Brett very generously stepped forward to become class sponsors, allowing IHAD to adopt a fourth class of 40 Broadway Dreamers living in four low-income housing sites.

• Boulder County United Way accepted IHAD as a new partner agency and will fund three programs: Academic Assistance; Career Choices and College Preparation; and Mentoring, Counseling and Outreach.

• Leopard Communications created a new agency brochure that helped us recruit over 80 volunteer tutors and mentors to pair with Dreamers.

• The National Association of College Admission Counselors (NACAC) along with the University of Colorado, Boulder chose IHAD to pilot a new program, which included a College Camp for Dreamers.

• IHAD's website www.ihadboulder.org was chosen as the People's Choice "Best Overall Grassroots Web Site" presented by the Colorado Nonprofit Internet Users Group, a partnership of Colorado Association of Nonprofit Organizations and Regis University.

• The Women of the West Museum and IHAD co-sponsored a “Querida Madre” mural project where Dreamers under the guidance of three accomplished artists created a mural of their mothers' lives during a three-week summer camp.

We are honored that individuals and organizations interested in becoming sponsors, donors and volun-teers continue to step forward with a genuine willingness to invest in the lives of young people in ourcommunity.

Because of your dedication and commitment, the I Have a Dream® Foundation of Boulder County willcontinue to bring a brighter future to children in Boulder County for many years to come. Thank you.

Sincerely,

History

Dreamers participated ina variety of activites overspring break, includingpoetry reading and careerexploration.

The I Have a Dream® Foundation of Boulder County (IHAD) was founded in 1990 and became the133rd chapter of the national network founded by Eugene Lang in 1981. While delivering a graduationspeech to a sixth-grade class at his alma mater in East Harlem, Lang made an impromptu promise to payfor the college education of the entire class provided they graduated from high school. Lang's inspirationfor this promise was the harsh statistic that 75% of those very same sixth-graders were not expected tofinish high school. The private sector initiative that evolved from Lang's original promise relies on acombination of personal and academic support, role modeling and a scholarship commitment to moti-vate Dreamers to establish and achieve their goals. Of Lang's original Dreamer class, 90% earned theirhigh school diplomas or GED certificates.

IHAD currently serves 187 Dreamers and their families - a total of over 400 individuals. The first classof 36 Dreamers (Boulder Class) was adopted in 1990 from the San Juan Del Centro Housing site. Ofthese students, 67% have already graduated high school and have gone on to higher education (whenonly 34% were expected to graduate), and 81% have gone on to college or vocational schools. The sec-ond class of 79 Dreamers (Lafayette Class), now twelfth graders at Centaurus High School, was adoptedin 1992 from a pool of fourth graders eligible for the free or reduced school lunch program at threeLafayette elementary schools. In 1996, the Kalmia Class was adopted through a partnership with theCity of Boulder Housing Authority and the University of Colorado at Boulder. The 32 KalmiaDreamers, currently sixth through tenth graders, are residents of three low-income public housing sites(Kalmia, Iris/Hawthorne and Diagonal Court). The latest addition to the IHAD family is the BroadwayClass of 40 Dreamers (3rd through 7th grade) selected in 1999 from four low-income public housingsites (Broadway, Kalmia, Iris/ Hawthorne, and Diagonal Court). This class is a partnership with City ofBoulder Housing Authority, University of Colorado, the Boulder Valley School District, and the U.S.Department of Education.

Funds for the post-secondary scholarships for all 187 Dreamers were provided by four Sponsors andhave been placed in trust for the Dreamers. Ongoing fundraising efforts enable IHAD to provide thelong-term, comprehensive services that are crucial to fulfilling our commitment to Dreamers and theirfamilies.

Programs

“I realize that much of what I dream for

or about can become a reality

IHAD is a school drop-out prevention program that selects entire groups of low-income students in ele-mentary school and provides tutoring, mentoring, cultural enrichment, career awareness, job placement, college preparation, and individual guidance through high school. Upon graduation, each studentreceives a tuition-assistance scholarship to help pay for college or vocational school.

While IHAD's scholarship commitment is important, it is the ongoing, personalized services the ProjectCoordinator provides to the Dreamers throughout their formative years that makes the IHAD model sucha success nationwide. Each class is assigned a Project Coordinator who maintains personal relationshipswith the Dreamers and their families and serves as a support and resource for academic and personalproblems. Project Coordinators provide referrals to other agencies to meet overall family needs, andserve as a liaison between Dreamers and their families and school personnel.

Making a DifferenceThe IHAD program exists because of the generosity of people in the community who donate their time and finan-cial support. With our volunteer tutoring and mentoring programs, kids in the program develop ongoing, personalrelationships and comprehensive support that really makes a difference in their lives. Without this support, itwould be very difficult for them to achieve their goals.

Financial donations are just as crucial as personal involvement. Donations help maintain our local infrastructureand increase the frequency of programs so these deserving kids can achieve their dreams through higher education.
