2010 Annual Report

ON THE COVER: Marcquille Johnson, 16, of Hartford, was recently selected to be Connecticut Children’s 2011 Champions representative. Marcquille was diagnosed with sickle cell disease when he was an infant. Each year Marcquille has between four and six inpatient stays and many more emergency department and care visits at the Medical Center for disease and pain management.

AT RIGHT: Like all children at the Medical Center, Piper, accompanied by his Granny, had the opportunity to drive himself to the operating room for his surgical procedure. Piper and his friends were part of a video called “Small Tales” which was filmed at Connecticut Children’s. The video is aimed at easing children’s fear of surgery.

Page 3: Making hope a reality. - Connecticut Children's · 2020-02-06 · Our mission at Connecticut Children’s is an important, but simple one — to improve the physical and emotional

Each day Connecticut Children’s doctors and

medical staff work tirelessly to deliver leading edge

medical care — in an environment that understands

the concerns of a child.

At the same time, every day, people in the

community come forward to make it all possible

with donations of time, talent and financial

resources. These donations, large and small, come

together to create our dynamic, thriving

children’s medical center.

Working together we are making hope a reality for

our region’s children and families.

Hope is a fascinating thing. While it is hard to define

or put into words, hope can be as powerful as the

imagination allows. But as powerful as hope can be, left

alone, it often is not enough.

Our mission at Connecticut Children’s is an important,

but simple one — to improve the physical and emotional

health of children. We do this through a variety of ways.

Our dedication to providing care focused solely on

children. Our focused effort on quality improvement

that is now modeled by children’s hospitals throughout

the country. And through advances made possible by our

commitment to groundbreaking and innovative research.

We do all of this and much more because we are committed

to making hope a reality.

Last year alone, Connecticut Children’s provided care to

a child over 288,000 times. As we care for more kids each

year, we continue to grow to meet the increasing demand

for our services. We have taken steps that will allow us

to offer more subspecialty programs and services in new

locations, enhancing the care that children already receive,

closer to home.

In the past twelve months, we saw almost 54,000 kids in

our Emergency Department, with cases ranging from simple

bumps and bruises to those involving the most complicated

levels of trauma. Our surgeons performed just under 10,000

procedures last year, affirming our status as one of the

leading pediatric surgery centers in the Northeast.

Connecticut Children’s is among the nation’s leaders

when it comes to measures of quality, particularly

infection prevention. We take very seriously our

commitment to provide the safest environment possible

for the children and families who entrust their care to us.

Our high marks in quality are a source of pride for every

employee at the Medical Center.

In addition to the leading clinical care that we provide,

our physicians continue to pursue breakthroughs in

pediatric medicine. Our research accomplishments in

areas from childhood cancer and digestive diseases to new

surgical techniques have garnered international recognition

and received unprecedented levels of competitive grant

support. We continue to work toward new treatments and

discoveries every day.

At Connecticut Children’s, we have our own hopes. Our

talented medical professionals continue to work tirelessly

to challenge the boundaries of pediatric medicine so that

more children, from newborns to young adults, can live

happy, healthy lives. We will succeed, because making

hope a reality is what we do best.

Sincerely,

2010 ANNuAL REPORT 5

People have different perceptions about the meaning

of sense of community. What most people do agree

on is that in order to have a sense of community, there

needs to be a certain level of emotional connection and

interdependence with each other. People need to share

common interests and common goals.

At Connecticut Children’s, we are fortunate that everyone

who comes through our doors shares one common vision

— that the children in our region receive the highest level of

care. Our community ranges from the families who entrust

their children’s care to us, to the medical professionals who

deliver care, to the many friends of the Medical Center who

help make it all possible.

It begins with the partnership between our patients,

families and caregivers. Our commitment to family-

centered care means that each family member is an

important partner in the healing process and a necessary

support in achieving healthier outcomes.

It extends to the teamwork and dedication of the

physicians, nurses, researchers and other medical

professionals at Connecticut Children’s who work

closely together to offer children and families the most

comprehensive and advanced level of care.

And it continues outside of our walls to the community

at large that helps us deliver on our mission. Ranging from

individuals to foundations to businesses, many people

come together in countless ways to help Connecticut’s

kids get the care they deserve.

Connecticut Children’s continues to grow and the

communities both inside and outside our walls continue

to grow along with us. As Board Chair, I can speak for

all our board members when I say we are energized to

continue our work to keep Connecticut Children’s at the

leading edge of technology, science, medicine and caring.

Together, we are making hope possible for children and

families throughout our region.

Charles W. Shivery

Making summer dreams real through advanced cancer care

Rachael Trudon, age 13, of Coventry, met her goal of being able to water ski with her family after undergoing treatment for cancer at Connecticut Children’s.

Page 9: Making hope a reality. - Connecticut Children's · 2020-02-06 · Our mission at Connecticut Children’s is an important, but simple one — to improve the physical and emotional

“She seemed tired,” says Rachael’s mom, Cheri Trudon.

“She just wasn’t herself. We thought it was a cold or a

virus. But when I took her to the doctor, she sent her

directly to Connecticut Children’s. In short order, Rachael

was diagnosed with cancer which had caused her to

accumulate fluids internally. So much so, that there was

pressure on her heart and lungs. The team at Connecticut

Children’s had to stabilize her breathing before any

treatment could begin.”

Rachael went through a difficult series of treatments

to fight the cancer. “While Rachael was being treated

we bought a cabin on a lake, and Rachael had a special

hammock where she could watch my husband work on

the cabin and her sisters play in the lake. She became

quite determined during this time to learn to water ski. We

were nervous and not so optimistic. After all, she had been

so weak during some of the treatments. But she proved us

wrong and now loves her time skiing on the lake.”

In Connecticut, about 150 children are diagnosed with

cancer each year. As the most comprehensive pediatric

hematology and oncology program in western New

England, a majority of these children are cared for at

Connecticut Children’s. So many, in fact, that the division

of hematology and oncology at the Medical Center

has outgrown it current space. Originally designed to

accommodate approximately 5,500 outpatient visits per

year, the division’s patient visits have increased to nearly

12,000 last year.

The division of hematology and oncology shares a

mission to design programs that enhance treatment,

support the patient and family throughout their care,

and pursue long-term cures from childhood cancers.

We are a key member of the Children’s Oncology Group

(COG), an international consortium that seeks to cure or

prevent childhood cancers through scientific discovery.

Currently, Connecticut Children’s has 162 active clinical

trials with the COG, ranking in the top 4% of the 240

COG members worldwide in total number of open

studies seeking cures for childhood cancer, cures that

could help children like Rachael.

“The new Clinical Care Center will be about people and partnerships, technology and discovery, family-centered care and comfort, with a common goal of making the best health and patient-related outcomes even better.”

“I was asked to chair the Brighter Hope

Campaign in late 2009. To say I was

intimidated is an understatement. How

could we possibly raise five million dollars

for the new Clinical Care Center in the worst

recession of our time?” says Glen Greenberg.

“My family and I have been running a golf

event for the last ten years. For the last

eight, Connecticut Children’s has been our

beneficiary. So last May when our event, Aces

for Kids, raised more money than ever before,

I felt confident that I could make a difference.

And today, I’m honored to say, we’ve raised

most of the five million dollars necessary for

the new Clinical Care Center for Cancer and

Blood Disorders.”

The new Clinical Care Center will address

the need for additional clinical space as

Connecticut Children’s continues to care for

a growing number of patients throughout

the region. The new space will improve the

care experience of children and their families

by providing private spaces and consultation

rooms large enough to accommodate

families. There will also be spaces for rest

and for play. The Center will include special

accommodations for our clinical researchers

and our clinical trials team who are constantly

at work, seeking ways to cure or prevent

childhood cancers.

“Raising the money for the Clinical Care

Center was a true community effort. I want

to thank again all those who helped and

all those who gave. But my real inspiration

and strength comes from the energy, effort

and generosity of spirit of my family. From

our annual golf event, to my daughter’s

fundraising program called ‘Lauren’s Cookie

Dough-Nations,’ to my son’s donation to the

Brighter Hope Campaign in lieu of having

a Bar Mitzvah party, to my wife’s endless

patience and guidance with all our efforts.

I am blessed to have this good work to do

and to have my family by my side.”

Raising money for Connecticut Children’s Brighter Hope Campaign has been a family effort for the for the Greenberg family of Avon. (l-r) Jeffrey, Debra, Glen and Lauren Greenberg have all contributed through a series of events and Glen serves as the Campaign’s Chairman.

Making regular days real for a twin sister

Grace Catalono, age 3, of Berlin, had complex reconstructive surgery at Connecticut Children’s when she was two days old. Today, she’s able to do everything her twin brother can do.

Page 13: Making hope a reality. - Connecticut Children's · 2020-02-06 · Our mission at Connecticut Children’s is an important, but simple one — to improve the physical and emotional

Jennifer Catalono knew she was having twins, but

she didn’t know they would have very different starts

in the world. “So much of it is a blur from that time.

The hospital staff told us we had a problem with one

of our babies and that she, Grace, would need to go to

Connecticut Children’s. I remember our surgeon,

Dr. Ferrer, called us before Grace even got to the hospital

to help us understand what had to be done. Grace’s

bladder was outside her body at birth. So when she was

two days old, she had her first surgery.”

Last year alone, over 9,900 surgical procedures were

performed at the Burton C. Hoffman Surgical Center at

Connecticut Children’s. According to Fernando Ferrer, MD,

Surgeon-in-Chief, this comes as no surprise. “For any

family with a child needing surgery, it makes perfect sense

that their best opportunity for an optimal outcome is

to have their child’s surgery performed at a place where

everyone involved in the process is totally focused on

kids.” Connecticut Children’s is the state’s only academic

medical center that meets this description.

But the accomplishments of the division of surgery at

Connecticut Children’s go well beyond this. Connecticut

Children’s was the first in the state to perform robotic

surgery on a child and was also the first to acquire and

employ CereTom, a portable CT scanner that enables

surgeons to verify surgical outcomes while still in the

operating room.

Outside of the operating rooms, Connecticut Children’s

skilled surgeons are conducting advanced research seeking

to redefine standards of care, identify the best treatments

and where possible, find cures for a variety of children’s

health issues. A perfect example is Connecticut Children’s

premier program in reconstructive and solid tumor surgery.

Jennifer continues with a smile, “When Grace came

home from the hospital she was so much smaller than her

twin brother. But she’s catching up to him now!”

2010 ANNuAL REPORT 9

“Leading research and the latest technological advances allow us to perform surgical procedures on children that simply could not be provided at other hospitals in the state.”

Fernando Ferrer, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief

Page 14: Making hope a reality. - Connecticut Children's · 2020-02-06 · Our mission at Connecticut Children’s is an important, but simple one — to improve the physical and emotional

Making hope

possible with a next-generation surgical center

There are many things that have to be

in place for a children’s hospital to earn

recognition as a leading pediatric surgical

center. There is, of course, the need for a team

of skilled and caring surgeons who are the

best in their field. A commitment to innovative

research and advances made possible through

the latest in technology is required as well.

And finally, there needs to be an

environment that is both state-of-the-art for

our medical professionals and comforting,

child-friendly and family-centered in every

way. For the almost 10,000 children who

undergo surgery at Connecticut Children’s

each year, this space exists — the Burton C.

Hoffman Day Surgery Center.

Since the inception of Connecticut Children’s

in 1996, the Hoffman family has been

supporting the Medical Center to honor the

legacy of their late father, Burton. During his

life, Burton shared with his family his passion

for golf and helping children in need. When

deciding how to honor their father, it seemed

only natural to establish a tournament in

his name and donate the proceeds to help

children. In the past twelve years, the Burton

C. Hoffman Golf Classic has raised almost $1

million that has touched every corner of the

Medical Center.

In 2009, Connecticut Children’s expanded

the Hoffman Day Surgery Center to include

a new registration and pre-op area which

includes a virtual fish tank, child-friendly

examination rooms, and a play area for

patients and family members. The new

registration and pre-op area also made

possible the development of its former space

into four new patient pre-op bays, which will

help Connecticut Children’s continue to meet

the increased demand for surgical services.

Thanks to the Hoffman family’s vision for

the future, Connecticut Children’s offers

surgical outcomes that other hospitals in the

state simply can not provide. Whether it is a

minimally invasive procedure or a much more

comprehensive surgery, the Burton C. Hoffman

Day Surgery Center helps children and families

get the surgical care they deserve.

Since the opening of Connecticut Children’s in 1996, (l-r) Jeffrey, Matthew and Bradley Hoffman have supported the Medical Center in honor of their father Burton. In the last year, just under 10,000 surgeries were performed at The Burton C. Hoffman Day Surgery Center.

Despite being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, 12-year-old Billy Gutmann of Weatogue, is an avid drummer and plays in his school’s jazz band.

Page 17: Making hope a reality. - Connecticut Children's · 2020-02-06 · Our mission at Connecticut Children’s is an important, but simple one — to improve the physical and emotional

“Billy was always such an active boy. Always outside.

Always playing at something. So when he started losing

weight and spending too much time on the couch, we

took him to see the doctor,” says Diane Gutmann, Billy’s

mom. “He had been suffering through symptoms of

Crohn’s disease, but didn’t feel he could share it with us. He

expected it to go away. But of course it didn’t. And even the

first few rounds of treatment had very little positive effect.

But he’s on a course of treatment now that working very

well. He’s back to his proper weight and as active as ever.”

As one of Connecticut Children’s premier programs, the

Medical Center’s Division of Digestive Diseases provides

state-of-the-art care and treatment to improve the lives of

children with digestive diseases such as Crohn’s disease

and ulcerative colitis. Connecticut Children’s digestive

diseases program has become the largest clinical program

for children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in

Connecticut, Rhode Island and Western Massachusetts.

Led by Jeffrey Hyams, MD, a nationally recognized

pioneer in pediatric digestive diseases, Connecticut

Children’s is recognized as a national leader in providing

and advancing care for children with IBD, a disease that

affects more than one million people in the United States,

with 25-30% percent of new cases occurring in children.

In addition, the research being conducted by the Pediatric

IBD Collaborative Research Group, founded right here at

Connecticut Children’s, is not only improving the health

and quality of life for children in Connecticut, but for

children all across the country.

According to Dr. Hyams, this comes from a profound

commitment to research on the part of the Collaborative

and the Medical Center. “It means that research is

woven into each interaction, whether it is an office visit,

colonoscopy, or specialized imaging. While we are pleased

with our progress, we want to do better. We want to better

understand why these diseases occur, why they can have

such a profound influence on growth, and how to better

treat them. And one day, to cure them.”

Making hope

possible through a lasting legacy

The Ames Stores Foundation has made a

generous $1 million donation to the Division of

Digestive Diseases at Connecticut Children’s

Medical Center.

The donation establishes the Ames Stores

Foundation Endowment in support of

Connecticut Children’s Center for Pediatric

Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The center was

established in 2006 to provide state-of-the-

art care, treatment, and research aimed at

improving the lives of children with Crohn’s

disease and ulcerative colitis. The center

has become the largest clinical program for

children with IBD in Connecticut, Rhode Island

and Western Massachusetts.

“The Ames Store Foundation Endowment

will be a lasting and perpetual legacy for

the department store chain at Connecticut

Children’s, and a promise of hope for

future generations of children with IBD in

Connecticut and throughout the world,” said

Jeffrey Hyams, MD, head of the Division of

Digestive Diseases, Hepatology and Nutrition.

“It is a tribute to the more than 2,000 Ames

employees who lived in Connecticut, many

of whom were touched by Connecticut

Children’s through their families and through

their own volunteer service.”

One such employee is Ellen Oland, the

former director of marketing communications

at Ames Department Stores whose daughter

Lauren was diagnosed with Crohn’s when she

was 7. Today Lauren, who is 34, is a partner in

a New York law firm and remains close friends

with Dr. Hyams.

“My husband Mark and I are longtime

supporters of the important work of Dr. Hyams,”

Oland said. “We’re so proud that the Ames

Stores Foundation has chosen to support

such an important program, and I know from

firsthand experience, that this endowment

will continue to have a lasting impact on the

children and families affected by IBD.”

Ellen Oland is the former marketing communications director of Ames Department Stores and played a vital role in having the Ames Stores Foundation make a $1 million gift to support the Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Connecticut Children’s.

Making Mother’s Day

real for our tiniest patients

Born at just 23 weeks, 1-year-old Breanna Harrison, of Manchester, was one of the approximately 500 premature or sick babies who are cared for in Connecticut Children’s NICu each year.

Page 21: Making hope a reality. - Connecticut Children's · 2020-02-06 · Our mission at Connecticut Children’s is an important, but simple one — to improve the physical and emotional

“Breanna was so small when she was born that her

father’s wedding ring fit on her arm — all the way up to

her shoulder,” says Breanna’s mother Felicia Harrison.

“She had so many hurdles to overcome at such a young

age, at times we didn’t know if she would make it. I’ll

never forget, the day before Mother’s Day was one of her

toughest days. There were lung and breathing issues and

an intestinal problem that required surgery. But she’s a

fighter.” Breanna weighed just one pound, seven ounces at

birth, but after four and one half months she was finally

able to go home. “I had a normal pregnancy and didn’t

suspect anything. But on a routine visit to my doctor at 23

weeks, he told me I had to stay in the hospital.” Despite

this precaution, Breanna was born two days later. ”

Felicia adds, “The doctors and nurses are all so

dedicated and selfless. They are so loving. And after all the

struggles she went through at the beginning, Breanna is

now a happy, energetic toddler.” Connecticut Children’s

neonatology program & Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

(NICU) was designated as the Medical Center’s inaugural

premier program in 2008. With its existing reputation as

a center of clinical excellence and innovative research, the

neonatology program is nationally regarded for its low

patient infection rates and its high marks in patient care

and family-patient satisfaction.

Each year, approximately 500 premature or sick

newborns are admitted to Connecticut Children’s NICU,

the centerpiece of the Medical Center’s neonatology

program. Recognized as the highest level NICU in

the region, newborns needing critical care services are

transferred to Connecticut Children’s from 19 hospitals

throughout the state.

As is evident throughout all of Connecticut Children’s,

it is not just the clinical excellence but the commitment

to research and discovery in neonatology that sets the

Medical Center apart. Ongoing research initiatives in

neonatology currently include studies designed to help

reduce the development of asthma due to allergy, prevent

chronic lung disease in premature infants and diminish

the occurrences of blindness and eye disease in newborns.

Dr. Herson adds, “You can’t meet a beautiful, energetic

little girl like Breanna and not want to keep finding new

and better ways to help these babies.”

Giving back to the community is a priority

for Landmark Partners.

With its Community Giving Program, the

employees of Landmark make financial

contributions and donate their time to

numerous local charitable causes — including

Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

“An important aspect of the Community

Giving Program is our matching gift feature

through which Landmark matches gifts

made by its employees,” says Partner

Robert Shanfield. “Landmark encourages its

employees to be actively involved in these

important programs and community services.”

Shanfield is a longtime member of both

Connecticut Children’s Corporate and

Foundation Boards of Directors. In 2004

Landmark Partners was part of Connecticut

Children’s Make Room for Kids Campaign, in

which the company donated $100,000 that

supported the addition of six new NICU beds as

well as new NICU family and education rooms.

The additional beds were needed for babies

with complex congenital abnormalities as well

as for those who survive premature birth and

need long-term neonatal intensive care.

“Families throughout Connecticut are

fortunate to have such a state-of-the-art facility

so close to home,” said Accounting Manager

Corrina Lusa. “My nephew was cared for at

Connecticut Children’s and after seeing the

treatment he received, I knew that I need to be

involved with this wonderful organization.”

Lusa serves on the Outreach and Storybook

Gala Committees for the Connecticut

Children’s Friends.

Ian Charles, an investment team principal

with Landmark, said being the father of three

provided even extra motivation for him to

give to Connecticut Children’s which includes

his membership on the planning board for

Connecticut Children’s new Clinical Care

Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

“Connecticut Children’s is the best place in

the state that you hope you will never need,”

Charles said.

Landmark Partners places a premium on its Community Giving Program. The company supports numerous projects at Connecticut Children’s including the Neonatal Intensive Care unit. Some of the employees who have contributed to Connecticut Children’s include (l-r): Robert Dombi, Tina St. Pierre, Ian Charles, Scott Conners, Chad Alfeld, Francisco Borges, R. Paul Mehlman and Corrina Lusa.

Examining and managing the risk factors of epidemics

such as asthma is nothing new for Michelle Cloutier, MD,

of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

The pediatric pulmonologist who leads Connecticut

Children’s Asthma Center, has received national attention

for a program called “Easy Breathing,” an asthma

management program for primary care providers. To date

almost 100,000 children have enrolled in Easy Breathing.

And it was that success that prompted further questions

from community physicians regarding another epidemic.

“The providers began calling and asking if I could

coordinate a program on obesity much like the one I did

for asthma,” Dr. Cloutier said.

Thus with the generous support of the Hartford

Foundation for Public Giving and the Aetna Foundation,

Dr. Cloutier now oversees two obesity awareness and

prevention programs from her position at The Children’s

Center for Community Research.

One is the Hartford Childhood Wellness Alliance, a

61-member group of medical, academic, government

and community representatives whose aim is to prevent

childhood obesity. Initiatives of the Alliance include a

school-based system for documenting body mass index in

Hartford’s children. These results are shared with parents,

creating culturally-sensitive messages around healthy

living in children and teaching families how to grow and

cook with healthy foods.

Another program, “Helping Children Grow Up Healthy,

the Role of the Pediatrician in Obesity Prevention,”

increases communication between pediatricians and

parents and their children about the dangers of obesity.

The pilot program is conducted at two community health

clinics in Hartford.

“Obese children become obese adults who have higher

rates of heart disease, diabetes, asthma, high blood

pressure and a reduced life span. It’s also been estimated

that America’s children will have a shorter lifespan than

their parents due to the effects of obesity,” said

Dr. Cloutier who is also a professor of pediatrics with

the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. “We

simply have to find ways to reverse the troubling trend of

increased obesity in our children.”

2010 ANNuAL REPORT 15

“A key to promoting healthy outcomes is to identify risk factors in children as soon as possible and then provide early intervention programs that target those issues. The community’s coordinated work in the area of child obesity awareness and prevention is a shining example of this.”

Paul Dworkin, MD, Physician-in-Chief

Page 26: Making hope a reality. - Connecticut Children's · 2020-02-06 · Our mission at Connecticut Children’s is an important, but simple one — to improve the physical and emotional

Making hope

possiblethrough the power of cooperation

In harmony with First Lady Michelle Obama’s

national campaign against childhood obesity,

grants totaling more than $720,000 have been

awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public

Giving and the Aetna Foundation Inc. to fund

two obesity awareness and prevention programs

at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving

grant — which totals $427,650 over three

years — provides core support for the work

of the Hartford Childhood Obesity Coalition,

a 31-member group of medical, academic,

government and community representatives

based at Connecticut Children’s.

One goal of the Hartford Foundation’s grant

has been to establish a school-based system

for documenting body mass index in Hartford’s

children and reporting those results to parents.

“Nothing illustrates the childhood obesity

problem like the case of a 17-year-old boy in

Missouri who required triple coronary bypass

surgery,” said Maria I. Mojica, vice president

for programs at the Hartford Foundation.

“Apparently the boy had no predisposition to

heart disease. Just obesity and type 2 diabetes

with the predictable consequences. This will

become a regular, sad occurrence, if we don’t

take action — precisely what Connecticut

Children’s is doing, with our support.”

The Aetna Foundation grant — which totals

$299,353 over three years — supports a pilot

program called “Helping Children Grow Up

Healthy, The Role of the Pediatrician in Obesity

Prevention ”which is aimed at increasing

communication between pediatricians and

parents and their children about the dangers

of obesity.

“This grant reflects our commitment to

the health and well-being of children, and is

consistent with one of the Aetna Foundations

top focus areas – the prevention of obesity,

particularly among children,” said Anne C. Beal,

MD, MPH, president of the Aetna Foundation.

Anne Beal, MD, PhD, president of the Aetna Foundation (l) and Maria I. Mojica, vice president for programs at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving (r) are pictured at Aetna’s headquarters in Hartford. Grants from both organizations have been used to fund two obesity and awareness and prevention programs at Connecticut Children’s.

2010 ANNuAL REPORT 25

C O N N E C T i C U T C h i L d R E N ’ s

FoundationDear Friends,

“We can’t tell you how grateful we are to have this hospital nearby and what

an impressive place Connecticut Children’s really is.”

These words remind me of why our continued support of Connecticut

Children’s is so vital. This year more than 288,000 children have been

helped by the exceptional care and services provided by the Medical

Center. Giving kids the care they deserve is only made possible by the

generosity of our donors.

Fiscal year 2010 was a banner year for the Foundation — its best

ever — with over $8 million dollars received from an amazing group of

compassionate donors. This impressive fundraising total demonstrates

the strength of support we enjoy from our donor community, Boards of Directors, faculty

and staff.

As you have read in the previous pages, philanthropic support is essential in turning hope to

reality. The stories we have shared with you represent the thousands of gifts we receive each year.

Behind each gift is a special story all its own — with one common thread. Every donor has the

desire to help advance the tremendous work that occurs each day at the Medical Center.

As I conclude my tenure as Chairman of the Foundation Board, I do so with a great sense

of pride and gratitude. I am proud to be associated with countless individuals who share my

commitment to the Medical Center’s mission and thank the entire Connecticut Children’s

community for investing in the health of our children. If children are indeed our future, then

the future is made brighter by your support of Connecticut Children’s.

Sincerely,

Anne P. SargentChairConnecticut Children’s Medical Center Foundation

Hundreds of riders braved the rainy conditions to support Connecticut Children’s as part of the 15th annual Connecticut Miracle Ride. The event winds through Connecticut, including a drive by the Medical Center so patients and families can greet the riders.

Paula Fahy Ostop and Lauren Zeligson present Marty Gavin with the proceeds from West Hartford Center Kidscard on behalf of over 75 stores and restaurants that participated in the discount shopping program. Each fall, shoppers can get 20% discounts at all locations when they donate to purchase the card.
