BFW HAS BEEN ELECTED TO the Karnataka State Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry for the year 2014. Known for its software industry, Karnataka is also home to manufacturing giants and many of In-dia’s premier science and technology research centres including the Indian Space Research Organisation. BFW will do its best to befit its induction in the council.

BFW is fortunate to be blessed with an excellent client base. Many BFW customers continue to patronise us for decades. Several new customers, too, keep getting added to our client list every year.

Customers are the best available natural teachers, who silently coach a company to become better. We want to work with our customers with the sole objec-tive of adding value to the whole chain. Sometimes we may succeed, sometime we may not; butwe will continue to strive to achieve this objective every time we are offered an opportunity.

Our most recent endeavour in this direction relates to our human resources. We are consciously accepting out of the box ways of working. This huge exercise will take some time to finish, but you should soon start feel-ing the difference.

By the time you read this piece, a BFW app would be in place to make it easier for you to send your feedback through smartphone or the web, and quickly learn about the status of response to your enquiry, order execution or service need straight from the in-charge of the activity. You can make us aware of your concerns and offer valuable suggestions. Your advice will be extremely precious to us.

We are spreading our spare parts selling arm, start-ing with the Northern Region. We will keep on updat-ing you on the other developments currently underway.

We are committed to making it easier for you to do business with us.

MAHATMA GANDHI SAID, “NATURE PROVIDES enough to satisfy every man’s needs but not every man’s greed”. He had a very thoughtful observation also on the role of customers. “A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an inter-ruption in our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider in our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us an opportunity to do so,” – he said.

Empathising with customers, BFW is finding more

and more ways to make it easier to do business. The customer-centric approach should help the com-pany contribute more to the progress of the manu-facturing industry, which serves as the backbone of the economy of the nation. I strongly hope that the economy will improve as the year progresses, bringing happiness to all.

People practicing different religions have India as their home. The coming months have major festivals for the Sikhs, the Jains, the Buddhists and the Christians. My best wishes to all.

More Machine Per MachineNikhil Nagaraj, BFW, Bangalore

JUST LIKE THE CARS OF today, the machines deployed for producing their parts, too, have to be energy-ef-ficient, flexible, eco-friendly, fast and compact. These machines must deliver higher accuracy and produce more than their predecessors did. In short, these ma-chines should be high on value. Borrowing the tagline used by a carmaker, what is required today is more machine per machine. Keeping these expectations in mind, BFW has introduced Tej, a machining center specifically meeting machining requirements of power-train components for passen-ger cars and LCV. Tej is packed with many advantages.

• Tej is compact. It can be easily accommodated in machining lines.

• All sub-systems are centrally mounted on Tej.• Tej gives you the flexibility of choosing the option

of pallet changer-less configuration and selecting from a variety of tables such as NC table, rotary table, tilting table, rotary + tilting table, etc.

• The standard job envelope of 560 mm in diameter gets scaled up to 700 mm without major changes.

• Roller type LM guide-ways impart rigidity to Tej.• Tej gives you the option of linear scale feedback

and ball-screw cooling to ensure consistent accu-racy.

• Instead of conventional telescopic covers, vertical wall type German lamella covers are mounted on Tej for better chip management. Greater agility of moving parts is an added advantage due to the lighter weight of the covers.

• Ram slide brings the Tej spindle close to the com-ponent, substantially reducing the tool length for many applications.

Netalkar Power Transmission and Srinivasa Induction Hardening – suppliers of machined crankshafts to M&M, Tata Motors and other leading automotive com-panies – find Tej superior to their other crankshaft oil hole drilling machines in use for five years. Though Tej is smaller, being 700 mm less deeper than common machines and having similar width, it handles longer, up to 700 mm crankshafts while the other machines stop at the 550 mm length. Isn’t that more machine per machine?

low MTTR, including operation history, alarm history, leakage detection module, and encoder check com-munication. A longest MTBF of 31 years has been clocked on the FS0i/ FS0i Mate-D Nano CNC on an installed base of 35,418 against a total 97,258 units. The high uptime enables end users to enjoy high pro-ductivity.

While FIL serves end customers through machine tool builders like BFW, it also renders direct service till the system remains in use. As CNC machines started get-ting into job shops, FIL implemented an India specific FoC (Follow on Contract) in 2003. It is the world’s low-est comprehensive AMC for the entire CNC package along with all motors and amplifiers on any machine tool. FIL has 23 service centres with critical spare parts to serve across India. Service issues can be communi-cated to [email protected].

FIL has consistently retained its leadership in India in the last two decades. It is ranked the highest globally in the chosen field. FIL will continue to work closely with BFW to offer comprehensive technical and deliv-ery solutions to the esteemed customers of BFW and keep evolving the cost performance CNC.

FANUC INDIA (FIL) IS ONE of the fortunate companies in the Indian machine tool industry to have associated with BFW, its esteemed customer for having awarded its first CNC system in the year 1992. FIL has been part of the BFW journey in its product expansion since the BMV introduction in 1998. FIL works closely with BFW to satisfy market aspirations.

FANUC is renowned for developing and launching new features every April in Japan through its vari-ous laboratories, which constitute 1/3rd of its strength. Requirements of the industry in India are kept in focus during the activity, leading to commendable achieve-ments such as the FS0i series nano CNC. It became one of the most powerful CNCs, despite having started as a cost-performance product. The die-mould features on the FS0i-MD are highly powerful and are similar to those on the higher end CNC FS18i family. Part of the credit behind such developments goes to the valuable market feedback provided by BFW. FIL shares with BFW critical application techniques for CNC opera-tion and tuning, helping quick and seamless installa-tion of the machines.

WHICH NATIONAL FLAG HAS DISTINCTLY differ-ent obverse and reverse sides? Mr Ravjeet Singh Bomrah, Managing Director, Ravjeet Engineering Specialities, Pune; Mr Sankarananth M, AGM - Pro-ject Planning, Ashok Leyland, Ennore; Mr Krishnan GS, AGM - Project Planning, Ashok Leyland; and Mr A Suryanarayana Murty, Hyderabad were the only ones to crack this rather tricky question. Para-guay, they correctly answered.

I notice that many BFW readers enjoy working on puzzles requiring arithmetical skills. If you, too, are one such reader, try solving this one.

It was the election time. An honest candidate, Sho-net, wanted to have a ticket to contest elections. His party, Toshen, used honesty as the election plank. However, the top brass of Toshen had a weakness for paranthas (an unleavened flatbread made by pan frying whole wheat dough on a tava).

Shonet asked his wife to cook a number of paran-thas on the day he was to visit the Toshen top brass. He told her, “I will have to offer the paranthas to seven leaders, one after the other. Please make enough so that I have at least two left for my lunch after all leaders have taken their dues. Each one of

them has a habit of keeping half of the paranthas, returning the balance after adding one as a token of their seniority!”

The wife smiled, and handed over a lunch box to Shonet.

“Isn’t the box too small? Will all of them have enough?” Shonet asked.

“Don’t worry. Not only will they have enough, you will also find the box having two paranthas for your lunch at the end.”

Since the box appeared to be small, in your opin-ion how many paranthas would have Shonet’s wife packed in it? Please send your response to [email protected].

IMAGINE THE DIRECTOR OF A machining company, and the picture that usually emerges is that of a har-assed-looking bespectacled man brooding over large blueprints spread all around. Try imagining the direc-tor of Axwel (India), and you could not be farther from the truth! Mr Suresh Mouli is a suave professional with a squeaky clean desk and no clutter anywhere in his office.

But then, Mr Mouli is no ordinary entrepreneur. He is an avid golfer holding a single handicap of five at the 70-par, 6,118-yard, 18-hole Bangalore Golf Club. He has also represented the Bangalore University and the State of Karnataka in cricket. Excellence in sports would have easily fetched him a cushy career with any corporate house or large government establishment, but he chose to work for Axwel, a company founded in 1964 by his father. He and his elder brother Mr Ramesh Mouli have taken Axwel to heights which most companies find too tough to even aspire for.

The core competence of Axwel lies in machining, though the company is also known to lend a helping hand in complex assemblies. Major Axwel products in-clude drive assemblies and systems for the mass transit industry, railway axles, heavy duty shafts, DHD casings, etc. India’s first monorail in Mumbai runs on Axwel axle flange assemblies.

The Moulis’ dedication and commitment keeps some of the world’s most prestigious clients including the

following in Axwel’s fold:

• Scomi Engineering, Malaysia• IEC Holden Inc, Canada• Rail Supply Inc, USA• Atlas Copco, India/ USA• Terex Pegson, United Kingdom• SMH Rail, Malaysia• International Construction Company, Jordan • GE, Bombardier and Siemens, multiple locations worldwide• Inka, Indonesia

Axwel owes its success to competent staff, meticulous planning, and global attitude. Mr Mouli researched for six months before zeroing on to the matec machin-ing centre to meet Axwel’s complex needs. Elaborate trials in Germany left him in no doubt that he was look-ing at the best machine. The pride of having taken the correct decision reflects on his face as he stands next to his matec machining centre.

Axwel is designing and executing monorail drive sys-tem projects in KI, Malaysia; Mumbai, India; and Sao Paulo and Manus, Brazil. The company is also supply-ing hybrid transmission technology parts for buses in Canada. A man bubbling with positive energy and with no axe to grind, Mr Mouli devotes considerable time to his other passion – water treatment. He has come close to devising a system of making water ab-solutely safe and soft. More about that sometime later!
