A wise person once said: “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”

This is certainly true at Huntington Ingalls Industries, where thousands of men and women all across the United States— and even a few around the world—go from their very demanding full-time jobs to thousands of volunteer commitments that help make their communities great places to live.

We are proud of our record of corporate citizenship. First and foremost, we are committed to safe operations everywhere we do business, and that includes protecting our natural environment.

We also contribute to a wide range of charitable programs—from education to health and human services to the arts—and we sponsor events that benefit the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics. Over time, our relationships with these groups and many more have become as much a part of our business as our relationships with our customers and suppliers.

But this “Report to the Community” also offers a glimpse of the very wide scope of work our employees do on their own—as volunteers with local schools, churches, hospitals, civic groups, clubs and other charitable organizations. They do this work because helping others makes them feel good. They may do it because someone helped them and they want to “pay it forward.” They may do it to set an example for their children. They do it because they know it’s the right thing to do.

Whatever their motivation, I’m proud of the work HII’s employees do in so many communities— including yours—and I’m proud that they also happen to work at HII.

It’s no accident that our report coincides with National Volunteer Week (April 23-29). I hope you will take the time to look through the pages that follow and try to find the names of any family members, friends and neighbors you may know. Then thank them!

If you are a volunteer, thank you for the meaningful work you do. If you’ve volunteered in the past but haven’t in a while, maybe this report will motivate you to volunteer again. And if you’ve never volunteered before, maybe this report will give you an idea of what you can do and where to start. Remember: “Everyone can do something.”

support a variety of early education initiatives;

April Martin & Charlotte Merritt

Ingalls Shipbuilding employees April Martin and Charlotte Merritt are active members of Ingalls’ African American Shipbuilders Association, Shipbuilding Women Engineers and Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise employee resource groups. They volunteer at a variety of events throughout the year—most notably, educational programs that inspire young people to pursue STEM-related careers. “Charlotte and April are hard-working, dedicated individuals who don’t think twice when asked to volunteer for anything,” said Dorothy Shaw, Ingalls’ director, compliance, ethics and community relations. “They have fostered relationships with local schools and teachers that enable students to reach their full potential. Whenever I need volunteers I can depend on, I know to call Charlotte and April.”

Juan Gonzalezmartinez

Continental Maritime of San Diego employee Juan Gonzalezmartinez is a U.S. Navy veteran and a volunteer with the Fleet Reserve Association and Homes for the Troops Association. “It is important to give back to the community,” he said. “For me, volunteering is a family event, and my children, father and wife also volunteer with me.” Machine Shop Superintendent Hank Ruhl said Gonzalezmartinez leads by example. “Whether he is here working in the Machine Shop or as a volunteer,” he said, “his hard work has a very positive impact at the company and in the community.”

Cornell Owens

AMSEC employee Cornell Owens volunteered more than 200 hours in 2016 as a member of the Poquoson Kiwanis Club. As chairman of the club’s BBQ and special projects committee, he helped raise more than $40,000 for charities and scholarships last year. He also supported the Kiwanis 5K Run/Walk, which raised over $15,000 for the Poquoson Education Foundation and Kiwanis scholarship program, and the Garvey Soccer Tournament, which raised $9,000 for the Edmarc Children’s Hospice and “Beyond Boobs.”

Heather Smith

Newport News Shipbuilding employee Heather Smith actively supports a variety of charitable organizations, including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, Newport News Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Laurel Shelter. “I was helped by many generous, committed volunteers and organizations when I was young,” she said, “and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. They showed me that there were concerned, good adults out there.”

It is important that we, as the state’s largest private employer, do all that we can to contribute to the progress of our local communities. The volunteer work our employees do in support of schools, non- profits, local athletic programs and the faith-based community is priceless. These entities have come to rely on volunteer support, and our employees have never let them down. I am proud to be associated with the volunteers at Ingalls, and I am even prouder of the invaluable contributions they make to the community.”
