Introducing your new card

Giving you access to your own money in more ways, in more places

Now you can experience a better way to access your money from your own bank account, wherever and whenever you want, with greater security.

You can use your Westpac Debit MasterCard® for all kinds of everyday purchases such as groceries, petrol, at restaurants and in shops. You also have access to your own money to make purchases online or over the phone and make cash withdrawals at ATMs.

In fact, your card is accepted everywhere MasterCard is – allowing you to use your own money at over 30 million locations, and withdraw cash at over 900,000 ATMs worldwide.

Remember to sign your card as soon as you receive it and carry it with you whenever you can. Keep your PIN a secret and prevent anyone seeing you enter your PIN.

3

Your Westpac Debit MasterCard is a debit card, and unlike a credit card, is linked to your personal bank account. So, when you make purchases or withdraw cash, these funds come directly from your account.

Using your Westpac Debit MasterCard®

Note at merchants where a surcharge is applied when CR is pressed, you are still able to press CHQ or SAV and swipe or insert your card.

By pressing the CREDIT button when you make purchases, or shop online or overseas, you get access to your own money with the added benefit of the Falcon™ fraud protection system.

When you press the CREDIT button, you also have the option to either sign for your purchases or enter your PIN – whichever you prefer. Keying in your 4-digit PIN is more convenient than signing because it’s quicker. Just enter your PIN on the keypad and you’re done.

If you have two bank accounts linked to your card, you need to access your own money as follows:

■■ Primary Account: Press CREDIT/CHEQUE button

■■ Secondary Account: Press SAVINGS button

There are now three ways to pay with your Debit MasterCard®.■■ Insert – You’ll notice that your new Debit MasterCard

comes with an embedded chip that will give you access to the latest in credit card security. CHIP technology is a more effective counter-measure against counterfeit and skimming fraud. You’ll just need to insert your card into the end of the terminal and enter your PIN or sign to make a purchase.

■■ Swipe – You still need to swipe your card and enter your PIN or sign at terminals that haven’t yet been upgraded to CHIP technology. These terminals will read the magnetic stripe on your card.

■■ Tap – For purchases of $100 or less, at locations where you see the MasterCard PayPass™ logo, you can now simply tap your card against the PayPass terminal for a fast and secure payment option.

6

Contactless Technology – A faster way to pay.Your new Westpac Debit MasterCard® comes equipped with the latest in contactless technology, MasterCard PayPass™, giving you the freedom to Tap & Go™. You don’t need to swipe or insert your card, enter a PIN or sign; you simply tap your card against the PayPass terminal and once the purchase is approved, you’re on your way. Of course you can still swipe or insert your card at the terminal, you’ll just have to sign or enter your PIN.

The benefits of contactless technology:

■■ Speed – there is no need to enter your PIN or sign for everyday purchases of $100 or less at participating merchants. So its perfect for places when you’re in a hurry, like at newsagents, fast food restaurants, stadiums and more.

■■ Convenience – it’s like having exact change every time, so you don’t always have to carry cash as well as your card, making PayPass perfect for small purchases where you see the PayPass logo.

■■ Security – to pay for a purchase, simply tap your card against the terminal – the card never leaves your hand. Plus the transaction is processed through the secure Westpac and MasterCard networks.

How does it work?

Using your Westpac Debit MasterCard with the added feature of MasterCard PayPass is simple.

1. Where you see the MasterCard PayPass logo, let the merchant know you’d like to pay using your MasterCard PayPass card and if you’d like a receipt for the transaction.

2. When the transaction amount is shown on the PayPass terminal, tap your card against the contactless symbol.

3. The terminal will indicate once your transaction is approved. Collect your receipt if you asked for one, and you’re done!

Page 9: Making the most of your Westpac Debit MasterCard · PDF fileMaking the most of your Westpac Debit MasterCard ... any unauthorised purchase transactions completed over the phone, online

Is it safe?

■■ All contactless transactions are processed through the reliable and secure Westpac and MasterCard® networks.

■■ With MasterCard PayPass™, your card needs to be within 4cm of the MasterCard PayPass terminal for more than half a second and the merchant must have first entered the transaction amount into the terminal.

■■ Your card never has to leave your hand, so you know you’re always in control.

■■ You’ll not be billed twice, even if you accidentally tap your card against the terminal more than once.

■■ The MasterCard Zero Liability policy protects you against any unauthorised purchase transactions completed over the phone, online or in stores provided you have complied with the terms of the policy. Visit westpac.com.au for details.

Where can I use contactless technology?

You can use your new MasterCard PayPass card at participating merchants wherever you see the MasterCard PayPass logo. To find out more about participating merchants, simply visit westpac.com.au/contactless

Added security featuresYour Westpac Debit MasterCard® provides you with an extensive range of security features and service measures to protect you from inconvenience and, more seriously, fraud.

Falcon™ fraud protection for extra peace of mind

FalconTM can detect unusual purchase activity and helps guard against fraud, 24/7. If Falcon™ identifies a transaction as suspicious, Westpac will contact you to confirm if the transaction was yours.

MasterCard Zero Liability policy: safeguarding you against unauthorised transactions

As a cardholder, you are protected under the MasterCard Zero Liability policy for unauthorised transactions made in stores, over the telephone, or on the internet. Just be sure to report any suspicious transactions without delay.

3-digit security code: helping protect you online

Take a look on the back of your card and you’ll see a number printed on the signature strip. This 3-digit security code brings you the protection of the anti-fraud measures employed by many internet and mail-order companies.

Disputed or suspicious transactions: If you don’t recognise a transaction on your statement, call us immediately on 1300 651 089 or +61 3 6345 1058 from overseas and we’ll investigate it for you.

Understanding your account balanceYour deposit account has a Current Balance and an Available Balance.

■■ Available Balance indicates the funds that are available for use. The available balance means the total balance in your account, less:

a) Pending transactions (such as Debit MasterCard® purchases) that have been authorised by the Bank, but have not yet been received and processed;

b) Cheques deposited but not yet cleared by the Bank

■■ Current Balance means the total balance in your account which may include uncleared funds.

Why would my Available Balance be different to my Current Balance?

When you use your Westpac Debit MasterCard and press the “credit” button to make a purchase, the bank reduces the amount of the transaction from your available balance. The current balance of your account will not reflect the purchase amount until the bank processes the transaction. This usually takes 2-3 days, but can take longer, depending on when the bank receives the transaction.

In most cases, when you use your Westpac Debit MasterCard within Australia for an ATM or EFTPOS transaction by pressing the Cheque or Savings button, the bank processes the transaction immediately, and both the available and current balances are updated simultaneously. An example of how this works is shown on the next page.

Page 13: Making the most of your Westpac Debit MasterCard · PDF fileMaking the most of your Westpac Debit MasterCard ... any unauthorised purchase transactions completed over the phone, online

Example

The example below shows how your Available Balance could be different to your Current Balance.

Let’s say that as at 1 June, an account had a current and available balance of $200. On 2 June, a Debit MasterCard® purchase transaction (pressed “credit” button) for $100 was made, reducing the available balance to $100 (but not impacting on the current balance which remains at $200, as the Bank will not have processed the transaction).

Date Transaction Description

Amount Current BalanceBalance appearing on statement

Available BalanceDoes not appear on statement

Carried forward as at 2/6

$200 $100

3/6 Direct debit $150 $50 -$50

3/6 Account overdrawn fee

$9 $41 -$59

4/6 Deposit $100 $141 $41

5/6 Debit Master-Card Purchase on 2/6

$100 $41 $41

As can be seen above, the Bank receives a direct debit request for $150 on 3 June that exceeds the available balance on the account, which is $100. The Bank decides to honour the transaction, and the total of the direct debit plus the account overdrawn fee reduces the available balance to -$59.

A deposit is made on the following day, bringing the available balance to $41. When the Bank receives and processes the Debit MasterCard purchase on 5 June, the current and available balances are once again aligned at $41.

The alternative to the Bank honouring the $150 direct debit transaction is to dishonour or not effect the transaction, resulting in the payment not being made on your behalf and you will be charged a dishonour fee.
