As we move in to the holiday season, I want to share a gift to all of our loyal donors and supporters. Last year we did 3,181 adoptions. As of September 1, we have already done that many and we are pushing to do 4,000 by the time you receive this newsletter. For those of you who support HSTB, I think this is a huge gift that we can all celebrate… the gift of life to our homeless four legged friends. You know that many of our animals are transfers from local animal services and their fate is unknown. Once they arrive at HSTB, they get a second chance at finding their forever home. So, from me and all the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that are living in our shelter, we say thank you to each of you and wish you and your family a very happy holiday.

P.S. Update on Mizz Ginny - she is living in a new home with a wonderful family. She went from being emaciated to now needing to go on a diet. Another success story from HSTB. Unfortunately, JUDGE DANIEL H. SLEET only gave the woman who starved Ginny 3 years probation. We are disappointed that she didn’t do time in jail.

Letter from the Executive Director

Did you know?

Did you know that the Humane Society of Tampa Bay won the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Nonprofit of the Year award in Environment & Animals? We were chosen for fiduciary responsibility.

When you first meet these young men, you know there is something different about them. It’s not because they’re incarcerated for substance abuse. It’s because they have taken their lives into their own hands and have a plan to do something with that life - something important.

They walk up to you, look you straight in the eye, introduce themselves and give you a firm hand shake. The past is the past and unlike yesterday, today they walk with pride.

How did they make this change from a boy in trouble to a young man with a future? A judge sent them to Riverside Academy in Tampa, FL, where counselors, teachers, and volunteers taught them to respect others and themselves. They learned this because they had a goal. They wanted to be part of T.R.A.I.N. (Teens Reaching Animals In Need).

To be a part of T.R.A.I.N., you have to work hard. You have to be at the top of your class, fill out a lengthy application, and go through an interview process in front of a panel that will critique you. Then, if you are chosen, you become one of the 10-12 young men in T.R.A.I.N.

Twice a week, the van pulls into the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and picks up dogs. These are dogs who will not get adopted quickly because they have problems, just like the boys. They bark too much, don’t mind authority and won’t walk on a leash. The dogs are taken to Riverside Academy where they spend the next hour working with T.R.A.I.N. And on Saturdays the boys get to leave Riverside Academy and work with the dogs at our shelter.

First the dogs are taught the basics, how to walk on a leash, sit, lie down, and stay. These lessons are taught through positive reinforcement. There are no unkind words, just gentle coaxing and a little cheese whiz when the job’s done right. The dogs learn manners, but the boys learn more. They learn how to treat others with respect, how to teach with compassion, how to be proud of one’s accomplishments, how to work together with others towards a common goal, and how to become the man they want to be.

In a study by Riverside Academy and the Department of Juvenile Justice, 87% of the boys that took part in T.R.A.I.N. have remained incident free after release.

If you know of anyone who is looking for a great dog, tell them to come to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and ask to meet a T.R.A.I.N. dog.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is honored to have been part of T.R.A.I.N for the last four years. We are proud of our dogs and the dynamic young men who have graduated from this innovative and unique program. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay would like to thank the people that make TRAIN possible: Dr. Betsy Coville, Sharon Latimer, Jill Hussung, Tony Grimaldi, Angela Kent, the volunteers, Paul Kirkham-Executive Director of Riverside Academy, and the leadership team of Sunshine Youth Services. It takes a community to make a difference. These people aren’t talking about it, they’re doing it.

Kid’s KornerKritter Kamp and Teen Week 2008 were great this year. 49 kids attended, many who are old enough to become volunteers for HSTB! This year campers got visited by the Florida Aquarium, Courteous Canine, Lowry Park Zoo, Big Cat Rescue, Barkbusters, HC Animal Services, just to name a few. The three weeks were action packed and the campers learned how to care for and handle dogs and cats. The campers loved everything (especially their one on one time with the animals). Thank you to everyone for a great year, and Kim Bridges for the amazing job she did putting it all together. See you next year!

Fall Pet Adoption ExpoThe HSTB Shelter will be closed on Saturday, November 15th because we won’t have any pets available for adoption.

How could that be? All of our adoptable pets will be at the Florida State Fairgrounds from 10 am – 4 pm for the Fall Pet Adoption Expo, along with Hillsborough County Animal Services and almost forty different rescue groups.

If you’re looking for an addition to your family, there is no better place to look. There will be at least one of everything imaginable. At the last Pet Adoption Expo, 386 pets found new homes. Let’s beat that record!

For more information please call (813) 367-2078.

Food Assistance ProgramWhen a decision has to be made whether to fill your gas tank, purchase your medications or feed your pet, please know that the Humane Society of Tampa Bay is here to help. Many people are having a difficult time right now because of the economy. If you need help to feed your pet, come to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, and we will give you a few weeks of pet food to tide you over until things get better.

If you are doing okay in this economy, but would like to help others, you can donate pet food or cash to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay to fund this program. It takes a community to make a difference and sometimes the community needs to lend a helping hand.

For more information, please check our website at www.humanesocietytampa.org or call (813) 876-7138.

MEDICATIONS Keep all pet medication in a closed cabinet for safekeeping. Some pet medications are flavored for ease of administration and enable your pet tastily overdose itself if it chews into the packaging.

Keep all prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs out of the reach of your pets, preferably in closed cabinets. Pain killers, cold medicines, asthmatic medications, anti-cancer drugs, antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, vitamins, and diet pills are common examples of human medication that might be left out on a table in the coming season. Remember that no countertop or purse/backpack is safe from a pet that wants to explore it. Remind guests to store their medications and their sugar-free gum safely as well.

During the holidays, many veterinary clinics have limited office hours. In some cases, pet owners try to medicate their animals without advice. Never give your animal any medications unless under the direction of a veterinarian. Many medications that humans use commonly can be deadly when used for your pet (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.)

Your animal may become poisoned in spite of your best efforts to prevent it. Keep the phone numbers for your veterinarian, a local emergency veterinary hospitals, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-4 ANI-HELP) in a convenient location. If you suspect that your pet has ingested something poisonous, seek veterinary attention immediately.
