Middle School and Junior Academy TeachersEmbark on Learning Methods CBC Training

Makini Middle School and Junior Academy teachers discuss during the training

Our Middle School and Junior Academyteachers recently had a competency basedcurriculum (CBC) training. This brilliant teamis now equipped with more vital topics inensuring a holistic education. We understandthat our children are whole people and weare sensitive to their emotions upholdingpositivity and encouragement as it impactson their learning. Some of the topics were:

• Differentiated LearningThis is based on the principle of diversity inlearning styles and multiple intelligences.Differentiated learning provides space forteachers to adapt teaching methods to suitindividual learners keeping in mind that eachlearner processes differently.

• Inquiry Based learningThis involves experiences that enablelearners to develop an understanding ofthe world around them through askingquestions, making discoveries andconducting experiments in the quest for newunderstanding. It is associated with the idea‘involve me and I understand’.

• Collaborative LearningCollaborative learning is an educationalapproach that involves groups of learnersworking together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product.Collaborative learning enables individuallearners to combine their own expertise, experience and ability to accomplish amutual learning goal. This was a great insightful and imperativetraining for our educators. We appreciatethem for always putting their best footforward in ensuring our children gain thebest of the best. Leadership and learning areindispensable to each other.

“Tell me and I will forget. Show me andI may remember.Involve me and I will understand.”

Nuggets of Wisdom Shared with our High School Candidates

On a bright afternoon, 1 November our high school candidates enjoyed a scrumptious meal and had a chance to gain insightful advice from our very own teachers and directors. “Education in Africa is a serious investment. Your parents, teachers and the government, including yourself have all invested in you to be here today. The exam you are about to take will determine the life ahead.” the PTA Chairman, Nixon Bugo said. “Remember three things called the three Cs:

• Commit to God - Wherever you go through life commit to God to guide your footsteps.• Character - This exam and many exams and trials in life will test your character.

integrity whether or people are watching. • Common sense - Always show your working during exams and in every task you do.

The PTA also promised for every A achieved that student will receive ksh 30,000/-.Our Commercial Director, Narasha Sanau also had an insightful advice for our candidates, “The world does not care about what you know but it cares about what you do with what you know.” The Guest Speaker, Bishop Grace Dalizu was also not left behind as she had great words of wisdom for our candidates. “You have prepared for this day for the last 12 years and it is quite normal to not feel prepared for we never feel completely prepared but the preparation you have made this far will make you pass. Remember nothing is far

focus in life.” she said. A ship is always safe at shore but that is not what it is built for. May our students dream big, reach for the stars and never give up. We wish all our candidates the very best in life.

High School Candidates Enjoy Team Building atKereita Forest

Our 2019 form four candidates having fun during the adventure

Prior to the KCSE exams, the candidatesenjoyed a final adventure at Kereita Forest. It is located in Lari District in Kiambu Countyapproximately 60 km from Nairobi. It wasa chilly day which eventually turned into agreat sunny one. They had the chance tolearn from one another through team buildingactivities creating efficiency and knowledgeon how to manage each other’s strengthsand weaknesses. They went for a nature trailwhich is unguided to enhance team work. Some got lost, some followed instructionsand those who got lost eventually found theirway.

A lot of games such as mind games that wasthought provoking, team activities, paintballwhere they were working as a team andcoming up with strategies to win, zip liningwhich helps in overcoming fears.

Other virtues that they learned include:All teams need leadership from one or allmembers in a team. Structured team buildingactivities help polish leadership qualities inthe candidates. This will also help them stepinwhere leadership roles are required.

Good communication is vital for a highperforming team. Team building can helpbreak down barriers in communication andalso how to better utilise both verbal andnon-verbal forms of communication.

Confidence applies to every single taskthat someone undertakes and, having it,will produce significant gains in results.Participating in team building exercises in acomfortable, non-threatening situation willhelp to develop confidence.

Let’s not forget fun is also essential. Thisbenefit is often overlooked but we believeit is one of the most important to have inany institution and workplace. Team buildingevents will reinforce the value of having funin school and significant results can actuallybe achieved when fun is involved.

The more that you read, the more thingsyou will know. The more that you learn, themore places you will go and as Makini we willalways go places.

It was a chilly early morning on Saturday 5 October for some of our students from Middle School and Junior Academy. Our students were extremely excited for the annual boogie ride from Nairobi to Naivasha. This is an annual trip where learners use the old railway and train to Naivasha. Our learners had the opportunity to visualise what they are taught in real time and this really excited them. Some of the physical features include: Rift Valley Escarpments, Mt. Longonot and our tea plantation. Let us not forget food is the ingredients that binds us together and our children really enjoyed a scrumptious meal and even indulged in some ice cream. They were truly happy and excited, we truly look forward to the next boogie ride next year.
