IntroductionThe Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Africa’s second largest country, has been ravaged by a regional conflict for the past two decades. The war, fought over the DRC’s vast natural resources, has had devastating consequences on the social, economic, political and humanitarian status of the area and its people.

Despite overwhelming challenges to day-to-day life, Malaika believes in the enormous potential of the Congolese people to bring about positive, lasting change on their own terms, so they can move forward in their lives with dignity, purpose and hope.

What is Malaika?Malaika’s work takes three distinct paths:

• Malaika School

• Community Center

• Five fresh-water wells

Malaika is registered in the US and the DRC. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (tax ID number 26-0670177) and a New York State Charity (registry number 40-52-76).

Malaika has no political or religious affiliations and will always remain neutral in the regions where it operates.

Noëlla Coursaris Musunka, Founder.

Sarah Kalumba, Country Manager.

Why education matters7 million children are not attending school in the DRC. The decades of civil conflict and extreme poverty have lead families to unequally prioritize the education of their children. If they can afford it, they send the boys to school while the girls stay home to help with domestic tasks. This has resulted in a 46% literacy rate for women, which leaves many of them disenfranchised, disempowered and susceptible to abuse. The village of Kalebuka is in a particularly underserved area, where women have only a 4% literacy rate.

Why sponsor a girl?Providing girls with an education helps break the cycle of poverty. Educated women are less likely to marry early or to die in childbirth and they are less vulnerable to diseases like HIV/AIDS. They also increase their income by 25% and reinvest 90% of it into their families and communities. Educating girls lifts entire families out of poverty and creates confident, empowered young women.

Transforming communitiesWhen you allow those at the very base to take part in their own development, they become empowered and the model becomes sustainable. This has been our approach and our vision at Malaika. Ultimately, we believe that a large majority of answers to the challenges facing Africa reside with Africans, and women and girls play a critical part in that development.

Sponsoring a girl means giving her and her family the tools to help themselves. In meetings with our students’ families, they have committed to cleaning, cooking and growing produce in our School garden for the girls and staff members. This type of initiative transcends traditional charity and allows people to take part in creating their own solutions to challenges. It mobilizes communities to tackle the root causes of poverty through access to education, addressing the issue of food-insecurity and working hand in hand with Malaika to improve the quality of life for the girls. This is truly a community-based school in which the ripple effect will be felt throughout Kalebuka.

Local women have received training so they can sew school uniforms.

The Malaika SchoolMalaika operates in Kalebuka, one of eight districts surrounding Lubumbashi, the second largest city in the DRC. Kalebuka is located about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Lubumbashi’s city center and is divided into 17 quarters and has approximately 42,000 citizens. The majority of households practice brick-making while others engage in subsistence farming, small trade and cattle herding. Kalebuka has only five small schools (all located in the center of this district) and three vocational training programs. Malaika works in a completely underserved area - the Munama quarter – which, until we arrived, had neither a school nor community facilities.

Students playing during recess.

The Malaika School is a free, accredited school that is providing a quality education to 231 girls in the village of Kalebuka. In 2011 we welcomed our inaugural Kindergarten and first grade classes and have added an incoming class each year since. One child per family, aged 5 years old, is chosen from the the area surrounding Kalebuka, up to a radius of 1km from our school building. In Fall 2016, we will welcome another class, totaling a study body of 252 girls from grades K to 6.

Our curriculumThe education system in the DRC is based on the highly regarded Belgian model. The Malaika School uses this system but is also grounded in a holistic curriculum that seeks to connect the girls’ development milestones, interests and academic benchmarks. Classes in French, English, math, science, health (including hygiene) and civic education are given daily. Great care is taken to cultivating the leadership potential of the students, from involvement in the Girl Scouts to field trips and community service projects such as planting trees or teaching the community about malaria prevention. Art, music, theater and physical education classes are also part of the robust program. The goal is to build the leadership capacity of each student so that she gives back to her community and has a positive, long-term impact on the future of the DRC.

Our staffThe difference between success and failure for a school often lies in the quality of the teachers. Therefore, Malaika pays competitive salaries to attract the best teachers to meet our school’s goals. In order to maintain this high level of education, twice a year our teachers gain additional training in various fields from local and international experts. Before being hired, our teachers undergo a series of tests and interviews to ensure they meet our high standards.

Teacher Training given by Education Development Advisor, Laurent Vande Putte.

Our libraryWe have inaugurated our e-library, which has books in French and English, in both print and digital format on donated Android tablets. This state of the art facility provides access to technology and resources that are opening up a whole new world to our students.

Goodwill Ambassador, Eve, inaugurating our library.

School meals programWith 59% of people living on $1.25 a day in the DRC, the Global Hunger Index ranks the country’s food crisis as “extremely alarming”. It is irrefutable that a healthy mind and a healthy body go hand in hand in a child’s development. Research readily backs up the claim that children learn better with a balanced diet because they are able to focus in their classes and are more alert.

A unique aspect of our school program is that it provides two healthy meals a day. All meals have been strategically planned with the help of a nutritionist to ensure a balanced diet that meets the needs of the girls at this crucial stage in their lives. They eat breakfast and lunch at the School and, as these are often the only meals they receive each day, they eagerly look forward to them, leading to a very low absence rate. We have enjoyed watching our girls gain weight, energy and vibrancy.

The effects of the food program were clear in just a few months. Above are photographs of Jeanne Kafungo Mpweto Musinga when she started at the Malaika School, and after one year.

The girls enjoy a delicious meal at the School.

SustainabilityWe are also proud to say that as of March, the Malaika School is 100% powered by solar energy! This brings the sustainability of the School to a whole new level, as we will no longer have to depend on unreliable electricity or an expensive generator.

Eve, Malaika’s Goodwill Ambassador My trip to the DRC to visit Malaika’s projects exceeded my expectations. I knew it would be a great environment for the girls, but Malaika goes above and beyond. You can feel the excitement from the girls when they take their seats in class. The library is an incredible addition to the Malaika School and to the curriculum.

GraduationWe cannot thank our supporters enough! Because of these generous donors, our School continues to provide our girls with a safe and loving environment in which they are able to grow and learn.

This year, out of our 231 students, 94% of them passed to the next year! Our devoted teachers work closely with the 6% who demonstrated a need for additional help. We arrange after-school homework assistance to make sure they are receiving the most rewarding education possible and also provide one-on one instruction. During the summer months, we offer activities on campus to keep the girls engaged and active and they are also encouraged to take home books to read during their free time. Three girls left the school due to their parents moving away, and two girls left because of health reasons.

We are so proud of our girls, both for their fantastic results and their hard work. They are thriving at the Malaika School and we will continue to give the girls the best classrooms, facilities, and an encouraging environment to help them fulfill their potential.

Life at the Malaika School

Elvis (Teacher, Class 3B) The end of each school year brings with it a wonderful sense of joy and peace. The students have learned new skills and have gained a new appreciation of life. The year ahead brings with it many challenges, but we are all determined to give our girls the confidence and support for their future.

Bertin (Teacher, Class 4B)At the Malaika School we focus on providing the best education possible to the girls, who in turn strive for excellence. After a summer of teacher training, we have strengthened our skills and look forward to putting into use what we have learned. We are sure that this new school year will be an exciting one for both teachers and students.

Page 9: malaikamalaika.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/2015-16-Malaika-Student-U… · Malaika School and we will continue to give the girls the best classrooms, facilities, and an encouraging

Mamie Lembalemba Chako (Class 4A)I love my school because I have made many friends there. I look forward every day to being there so I can be with them. I am so happy.

Jeanne Kafungo Mpweto (Class 5)Before I came here I was very shy. The school has helped me become more confident and now today I can speak without fear or shame. Thanks to the sports program I am able to play tennis. I even won a medal in a tennis tournament. It was a great day for me. When I have money I want to give the same chance to others that I had: the chance to study for free.

Josiane Kasongo Kyioni (Class 5)I used to worry about eating and where I would get my food, but not anymore since the school gives me breakfast and lunch. I do not want to miss a single day at school. For me the school is like a family and they treat me like their own daughter.

BirthBorn in Kipushi, a mining town 35km southwest of Lubumbashi, Bijou and Raissa are the twin daughters of dad Dede and mum Sandra.

They are the 4th and 5th children in a family of six, one boy and five girls. Although born on the same day, Saturday March 10th, 2009, Bijou is older, arriving at 2pm, 7 hours ahead of Raissa at 9pm.

Bijou Raissa

LifeTwins often have a special bond. This is true of Bijou and Raissa whose love for each other is characterized by their concern for each other. For them their feelings for each other are contagious. If one feels sad then the other will also become sad if she cannot console her.

They love being able to share all that they have.

What differentiates themBijou loves to get into the details of things and to organize her belongings. She is wise and calm, especially when facing provocation from her sister.

Raissa is a born leader and likes to be in charge. She can be a little temperamental but is very eloquent and enjoys sharing everything she has with her sister and friends.

What they have in commonThey have the same small gap between their front teeth, are both very personable and protective of each other.

Their favorite things:• Color: white• Activities: riding a bike, playing with dolls

What they dislike• Being told off• Lack of respect• Especially being apart from each other

Malaika welcomed Bijou & Raissa

In December of last year, during the Christmas break, we received the devastating news that one of our Grade 1 students had passed away due to an illness. The lack of access to health facilities in the area meant that little Myriam did not receive the care she needed.

Myriam

Tragedies like these are why we are focusing all our energies on raising funds for the Development Offices and the student health center. The student health center, in particular, is a desperately needed area as there is no clinic in Kalebuka.

We would like to increase our health checks from twice a year to monthly, and we need a dedicated room for the Doctor to be able to do this.

The teamMalaika’s programs rely upon the dedication and hard work of 30 paid Congolese staff members working on the ground in the DRC and around-the-clock support from a team of 35 volunteers working in New York, London, the DRC and beyond. Malaika has only one paid part-time staff member in New York.

91% of every dollar donated to Malaika goes directly to our programs – the remaining 9% covers essential administrative costs necessary to keep our programs running.

Our wonderful local team.
