Branding elementsLogo

The Mallee CMA logo uses colours and forms that represent the mallee landscape. A number of logo variations are available and can be obtained from the Communications Officer.

The following should be noted when using the logo:

• the full colour logo should be used as first preference at all times;

• professional printers may request a vector logo (EPS or PDF), these logo’s can be scaled with no loss of quality;

• greyscale and single colour versions are available for use where the number of inks in a job are restricted;

• when placed on a dark or complex background, the reversed logo should be used;

• in print applications, the logo should not be reproduced at less than 25 mm wide;

• onscreen applications, the logo should not be reproduced at less than 120 pixels wide;

• an exclusion zone, into which no other objects intrude, should be maintained around the logo.

Mallee CMA Logo useDos and Donts

When inserting:

• Do not rotate the logo;

• The logo should always be horizontal;

• Do not stretch or squash the logo;

• The logo should be scaled with proportions;

• If possible always use a vector logo (can be scaled to any size without loss of quality); and

• Do not convert the logo to greyscale, this will result in incorrect tints.

A variety of Mallee CMA logo colours and formats are avialable from the Mallee CMA Communications Officer.

Corporate coloursThe Mallee CMA’s colours are inspired by those found throughout the region. Used consistently, they give a bold yet earthy feel to the Mallee CMA’s identity.

Mallee CMA Teal should be primarily used across all stationery, accompanied with 90% and 60% black in the body text. These colours can be set up in paragraph styles ready for use.

Tints or percentages of teal can be used for graphs, tables and diagrams.

Please see the Branding usage chart on the next page for PMS, CMYK and RGB guidance.

Supporting colours

Mallee CMA Orange and Navy should used as supporting colours only.

Note:

• Colours may vary on individual screens; and

• If this document has been printed on a CMYK colour copier, note that colour copiers can vary over time, and therefore the swatches on this page when printed may not be colour accurate.

General paragraph stylesSome Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint) and all Adobe InDesign templates have customised paragraph styles included when opened from the Quality Management System.

These templates should be used without modification to ensure consistency of style across the Mallee CMA brand. Changing the template set-up to make the finished product fit or look better on the page is permitted.

The following table contains the styles for use in both internal and external Mallee CMA documents. Refer to this table if styles need to be set up manually.

Co-brandingWhen used on a Mallee CMA publication the Mallee CMA logo:

• should always be placed in the highest hierarchical position in relation to other logos;

• must be visually equal in size to other logos;

• must be in full colour; and

• must be applied following the guidelines on page 4.

Permission must be sought from partner organisations before including their logo on a Mallee CMA publication.

When used on a Mallee CMA publication partner logos:

• should be arranged following the Mallee CMA logo in appropriate order, (i.e. level of project support);

• should be in vector format for print applications (EPS or PDF); where this is not available, a TIFF of no less than 300 dots per inch (dpi) may be used;

• should be a similar size to (or, where appropriate, smaller than) the Mallee CMA logo; and

• must be applied following their own style guidelines (available from the Communications Officer).

Government logosAustralian federal and state governments have guidelines regarding the use of their logos, the relevant guidelines should always be adhered to.

Below is an example of co-branding where the Mallee CMA logo sits alongside government logos. The Mallee CMA logo is centre because Australian Government logos must be to the left of all other and the Victorian Government logo must be to the right.

Funding acknowledgement

To acknowledge Australian Government funding, use one of the following funding acknowledgement statements:

• This project is supported by the Mallee Catchment Management Authority, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.

If there has been more than one funding body, the following wording should be used:

• This project is supported by the Mallee Catchment Management Authority, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme and [other funding body’s name].

If the project proponent has also provided funding, the following wording should be used:

• This project is jointly funded through [organisation name] and the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.

ImagesPhotographs

Images should be prepared as follows:

• for print, CMYK 300 dpi TIFFs

• for screen display, RGB 72 dpi JPGs (increasing to 200dpi for PowerPoint presentations improves print quality)

• never scale larger to increase photo size, this reduces final resolution and therefore the output quality.

NB: Check the (InDesign) ‘Info’ palette to ensure that ‘Effective ppi’ is at least 300 dpi.

If dpi information cannot be obtained, file sizes can be used as a rough guide to determine how large the image may be printed. The table below shows some common print sizes and the appropriate file size.

Print size File sizeA4 7MB

File sizes are approximations based on JPGs that have not been compressed, resized, resampled or made CMYK

A5 4MBA6 2.5MBA7 1.5MBA8 750 KB

For an image to be used in an Mallee CMA publication, the Mallee CMA must be the copyright owner, or have obtained written permission from the copyright owner, in either case, a credit must be noted in the publication.

Written permission must be sought from any subjects appearing in Mallee CMA photographs. A photo permission form is available on the QMS controlled documents forms folder.

Maps

Map colours and text should be in line with the Mallee CMA’s corporate style.

A map of the whole region has been developed for print applications (right). Other maps are availble from GIS or the Communications Officer.

Maps should always be used in vector format for print applications.

Consultants/service providers supplying maps to the Mallee CMA, should provided maps as follows:

• in vector format (i.e. PDF);

• with a layer for each kind of information (i.e. a layer for roads and a layer for council boundaries);

• not containing any bitmap information (GIS software may export areas as strips of bitmap images; this is not high enough quality for printing).

PublicationsAll publications require the direct involvement of the Executive Coordinator and final approval from the Mallee CMA CEO. A variety of publication templates are available from the QMS Controlled Documents for in-house production as detailed below. Templates exist for signage, flyers, postcards, invitations and tri-fold A4 brochure.

Text should be supplied in a Word document. Graphics (photos, logos, diagrams and tables) can be inserted as a guide for preferred placement but MUST be supplied as separate files. Refer to previous pages for guidelines regarding graphic supply and usage guidelines.

Fact sheets

The Mallee CMA’s fact sheets are double sided A4 documents generally focused on a single subject or theme. The target audience is usually the general public.

The following is a guideline for contents based on the set up of the InDesign template.

• 600 words (depending on number and size of images/graphic used);

• 2 to 3 images - at least one of the images should include people; and

• ‘At a glance’ - 3 or 4 key points.

Technical bulletins

The Mallee CMA’s technical bulletins are four page A4 documents. The content is typically of a technical or scientific nature and the templates allow for the placement of graphs, maps etc.

The following is a guideline for contents based on the set up of the InDesign template.

• 1,200 words (depending on number and size of images/graphics used);

• 3 to 4 images; and

• ‘At a glance’ - 3 or 4 key points.

Fact sheet and technical bulletin content

Use the headings listed below as a guide when writing a fact sheet or technical bulletin:

• Title - keep it short and descriptive;

• Potential audience - use language that the intended reader will understand, avoid acronyms and scientific jargon, particularly if your audience is the general public;

• Purpose - what does the publication hope to achieve (e.g. raising community awareness of a certain issue or seeking expressions of interest for a particular incentives program)?;

• Background of the program/topic - provide details relevant to your target audience;

• For further information - provide details of the main contact, include name, numbers and email addresses;

• Project partners - provide details and/acknowledgment of the project partners, especially funding partners; and

• Other relevant information - provide details of any other relevant information to be included.

Report cover and inside cover page

Third-party reports from consultants and other organisations are required to be bound with standardised report covers and inside cover page. This helps to preserve the Mallee CMA’s brand identity and ensure that important information is always presented in a clear and readable format. It is understood that reports are formatted in a variety of ways, and in some instances it is not practical to require third parties to adhere to Mallee CMA guidelines.

PowerPoint presentation

A generic ‘corporate’ PowerPoint presentation has been created for general use and is available from the QMS Controlled Documents.

General text principles1. Use a single (not double) space after a full stop;

2. Date format: Monday, 28 August 2016;

3. Common names of animal and plant species are capitalised, e.g. Australian Pelican; scientific names are capitalised only to the genus level and are italicised, e.g. Pelecanus conspicillatus.

4. Italicise Aboriginal terms and phrases except when they refer to a language group or geographical area, e.g. murrnong (but, Ngarrindjeri and Jari Jari);

5. Use single quotation marks, except when it is necessary to ‘nest’ a quote inside another;

6. Do not allow paragraphs or bullet points to split over columns (or pages) unless there are at least two lines of text (and preferably three) remaining together at the top and bottom of each column (or page);

7. Dot points require semi-colons after each item, the second to last point requires ‘and’ after the semi-colon;

8. Generally, full stops are not required in tables;

9. When citing legislation, the first reference should have the full formal title, in italics. In subsequent references, this title can be shown in regular type with the date omitted as per: the Water Act 1989 … the Water Act;

10.Use Narrow Bold for websites and email addresses, e.g. Visit the website at www.malleecma.vic.gov.au;

11. Insert a hyperlink at websites and email addresses when final document output is to be a pdf for online viewing;

12.Make sure that automatic hyphenation is switched off;

13.Use commas when writing large numbers, e.g. 66,000 or 6,600,000;

14.Do not use a space between a number and the unit of measurement to ensure they do not separate across a line, e.g. 3,000km, 15% or 30°C; and

15.Use an en rule for a span of figures, e.g. 20-25 hectares.

ProductionSustainability

All Mallee CMA publications are to be printed in line with the Environmental Sustainability Policy.

Choosing a printer

The best way to ensure high levels of consistency and quality is to print or manufacture Mallee CMA products with selected service providers. As a minimum, it is recommended that service providers adhere to basic sustainability principles.

Glossary of termsBleed

When the printed image extends to, and passes over, the trim edge of a sheet or page. Printing house require documents to be set up with bleeds, usually 3mm.

Cap height

Measurement taken from the base of the capital letter to the top edge of the capital letter.

CMYK

The abbreviation CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (K is used rather than B in order to avoid confusion between blue and black). These are the ink colours used in four-colour process printing.

Hexadecimal Colours

Also referred to as web or hex colours, hexadecimal colours are used to specify colours used on web pages. A six digit number is used in HTML, CSS and SVG to represent colours.

Kerning

The manual adjustment of the amount of space between letters and words.

Leading

The space between lines of type, expressed as a measurement in points, from the baseline of each consecutive line of type.

PMS

Pantone Colour Matching System;

An international colour swatch numbering system used to provide a method for the selection, specification and matching of colours.

Point

A unit of measure used in the specification of type, approximately 0.35mm. There are 72 points in one inch.

RGB

The abbreviation RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue. These three colours are used to refer to all colour produced electronically.

Typeface

A particular style or appearance of letters which make up the alphabet.
