Malunga Primary School Siaya - Western Kenya
Location and Site: The School is located 3km from Ngia Market, Western Kenya. The site is 3.4 acres and has a
large football field there are also many large trees and bushes. There are mango, coffee and avocado trees on
site, maize and kale are also grown. The school is built on community land donated by the government.
Students: There are currently approximately 270 pupils in the primary school and a further 44 in the Early
Childhood Development centre. Class sizes vary with an average of around 34 children per class: the
classrooms are small for this number of students especially the bigger classes and there is generally a lack of
desks and chairs. Last year all 20 Class 8 students graduated and went on to secondary school. The school was
top in there zone for class 8 exams results and received a trophy for being most improved by the KCPE.
Teachers and School Management: The school currently employs eleven members of staff; 8 government
funded and 3 funded through the community and the parents of students. The format of the committee is that
there is a parent representative from all the classes, the head teacher is also in the committee, there are also 2
people from the district education board and a further 3 representatives from the community church. Each
year the committee vote for a chairman. There is a total of 15 members in the committee, 6 who are female
and 9 who are male.
Support from the Authorities: The school is given 1020 shillings per child per year by the government. The
school has had some support from charities in the past including, the installation of two water tanks and two
toilets blocks (for girls and teachers) by KWAHO, another charity named Care International gave the school
small poly tanks for pupils to wash their hands and drink from. All internal exam costs are paid for by the
parents of students.
School Facilities: The original classrooms were built in the 1950’s and further classrooms were added in the
1980’s. The teachers building was built in 2009 and toilet blocks were added in 2011/2012. Currently there are
9 used classrooms and 4 unused classrooms all in varying states of disrepair. There is a fairly large staff
building, 4 toilet blocks (2male, 1 female, 1 teachers), small kitchen and cow shed. The block that was built in
