MALVERNCONCERT CLUBFOUNDED 1903 by SIR EDWARD ELGAR om

117th Season

2019-20 Ever since its first concert on 31 October 1903, MALvERN CoNCERt CLuB has been a cornerstone of musical life in Worcestershire. It was founded by Sir Edward Elgar, and the Club’s first Secretary (for over 38 years) was his close friend the local architect Arthur Troyte Griffith, whom Elgar had immortalised in Variation No. VII, Troyte, in his Enigma Variations. The Club continued to run through two World Wars without a break. Now, for its 117th Season, Malvern Concert Club is proud to continue that tradition of bringing the best chamber music to this part of the country, with a roster of British and international musicians, both established performers and promising newcomers. Although we’re called a ‘Club’, anyone can join - and anyone can attend concerts without joining. Besides their high quality, our concerts offer excellent value for money. Single tickets are available to non-members, but membership of Malvern Concert Club offers six concerts for less than the price of four. Do join us!

The President of Malvern Concert Club is the eminent baritone and composer Roderick Williams obe

In 2020, the musical world celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. Malvern Concert Club will present a number of concerts including Beethoven’s compositions, and in the second half of this 117th season (and the first half of the 118th), they will be highlighted in our publicity.

Frith Piano QuartetBenjamin Frith piano David Le Page violin Robin ireland viola Richard Jenkinson cellowith John tattersdill double bassFarrenc Piano Quintet No.1 in A minor, Op.30Fauré Piano Quartet No.1 in C minor, Op.15Schubert Piano Quintet in A, D.667, The Trout

The Frith Piano Quartet was formed in 2001 by a group of like-minded musicians who wanted to explore the wealth of wonderful music written for the piano quartet medium. The group’s founder members included the pianist Benjamin Frith and cellist Richard Jenkinson, latterly joined by David Le Page and Robin Ireland, all distinguished soloists in their own right. The quartet’s first concerts were at the CBSO’s Centre Stage, Birmingham, where they performed the complete piano quartets of Brahms, Fauré and Mozart. Fauré ‘s enchanting first quartet forms the centrepiece of tonight’s concert.

The Frith Piano Quartet has a keen interest in performing unjustly neglected works that are not so often heard in the concert hall. Together with John tattersdill, former Double Bass Section Leader in the CBSO, they open the concert with one such work, the first Piano Quintet by the French composer, virtuoso pianist and teacher, Louise Farrenc (1804-75). Highly successful in her lifetime, Farrenc became neglected after her death until ‘rediscovered’ in recent years. With the double bass, her two piano quintets share the same scoring as one of the most popular works in the whole chamber music canon, Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet, which provides a joyful conclusion to the first concert of our season.

This concert is generously supported by vale Pianos, Pershore through the loan of a Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano

Pavel Haas Quartetveronika Jarůšková violin Marek Zwiebel violinJiří Kabát viola Peter Jarůšek celloĽubica Čekovska The Midsummer Quartet (2016)Schulhoff String Quartet No.1(1924)Smetana String Quartet No.2 in D minorJanáček String Quartet No.2, Intimate Letters

The Pavel Haas Quartet first played at Malvern Concert Club exactly ten years ago this month (a concert featuring Janáček’s String Quartet No.1), and we are delighted to welcome them back.

Founded in 2002, following their victory in the Prague Spring Festival Competition, the Pavel Haas Quartet soon established themselves as one of the world’s most exciting contemporary chamber ensembles. In 2007, the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) named the Pavel Haas Quartet one of its Rising Stars, following which the Quartet held the title of BBC New Generation Artist and in 2010 was granted a classical music fellowship from the Borletti–Buitoni Trust. Performing at the most renowned concert venues around the globe, the PHQ have to date recorded six critically acclaimed CDs, which have received numerous prestigious awards including the Gramophone Chamber Music Award five times, and the overall Recording of the Year in 2011.

The Quartet bears the name of the Czech composer Pavel Haas (1899–1944), the most talented pupil of Leoš Janáček. Like Haas, his contemporary Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) died in a Nazi concentration camp. His first quartet is a colourful work that strongly reflects his Czech heritage as well as a heady mix of the styles and trends of the 1920s. The quartet by the Slovak composer Ľubica Čekovská (b.1975), premièred by the PHQ, references Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Of tonight’s two older composers, although Smetana’s first quartet has been played eight times at the Club (including at its third ever concert, in 1904), surprisingly tonight’s is the first ever performance here of the second.

London-based Pavel Kolesnikov was born in Novosibirsk, Russia and studied both the piano and violin for ten years, before concentrating solely on the piano. He went on to study at the Moscow State Conservatory, the Royal College of Music and in Brussels with Maria João Pires. During his studies he was awarded the Milstein Medal and the RCM Benjamin Britten Piano Fellowship.

Since becoming Prize Laureate of the Honens Prize for Piano in 2012, Pavel has performed extensively across the globe including major venues in New York, Berlin, Melbourne, Tokyo and Paris. Following his Wigmore Hall debut in January 2014, The Daily Telegraph gave his recital a rare five-star review declaring it ‘one of the most memorable of such occasions London has witnessed in a while’.

A former member of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists scheme, Pavel made his BBC Proms debut in 2016 in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.2, returning in 2017 to give an all-Chopin solo recital. He maintains a busy career as a recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with many international orchestras.

His studio recordings have been met with critical acclaim, including a Diapason d’Or and a Gramophone Award nomination, whilst earning Pavel a place in The Daily Telegraph’s ‘Cultural Best’ of 2016. Of his most recent all-Beethoven Hyperion CD, MusicWeb International said ‘This Moonlight teems with insight and ambiguity, and leaves an indelible impression that deepens with each listen.’6

tasmin Little violinMartin Roscoe pianoBeethoven Sonatas for piano and violin

No.6 in A, Op.30, No.1No.3 in E flat, Op.12, No.3No.9 in A, Op.47, Kreutzer

tasmin Little oBE and Martin Roscoe return to Malvern Concert Club for the final instalment of their three-recital series in which they give us a rare opportunity to hear all of Beethoven’s ten sonatas ‘for piano and violin’, culminating in this, the composer’s 250th anniversary year.

Tasmin Little has firmly established herself as one of today’s leading international violinists. Her multi-award winning and varied career encompasses international concerto and recital performances, master classes, workshops and community outreach work. Her discography and performance schedule reflect her wide-ranging repertoire and she has given numerous world première performances. Tasmin is retiring from the concert stage in Summer 2020, so Malvern Concert Club is fortunate to hear one of her last public performances.

With an extraordinary career spanning over four decades, Martin Roscoe is unarguably one of the UK’s best loved pianists. Renowned for his versatility at the keyboard, Martin is equally at home in concerto, recital and chamber performances. In an ever more distinguished career, his enduring popularity and the respect in which he is universally held are built on a deeply thoughtful musicianship allied to an easy rapport with audiences and fellow musicians alike.

‘Tasmin Little and Martin Roscoe are equal partners who give these works a balanced approach ... the playing is energetic and powerfully expressive’ [AllMusic Review of their 2016 Chandos CD set of these sonatas]. The Sunday Times chose this recording as its Album of the Week: ‘Neither artist has done anything finer on disc.’

There is a synergy between the Renaissance masters and those writing for voices today, says Owain Park, director of the Gesualdo Six, who likes to bring early and contemporary music together in one programme, with the ensemble using the ancient space of Great Malvern Priory to full sonic effect.

Formed in March 2014 for a performance of Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories for Maundy Thursday in the chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge, the The Gesualdo Six went on to give over one hundred performances around the United Kingdom and abroad in its first four years. Over this time, it further developed a passion for ensemble singing that for many of them stemmed from formative years as choristers in churches and cathedrals around the country.

The Gesualdo Six has performed in many festivals in the UK, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, France, Poland and Monaco. In 2018, the ensemble released their debut recording of English renaissance polyphony ‘English Motets’ on Hyperion Records. The Daily Telegraph said: ‘The sheer beauty of the group’s sound in lofty high-Renaissance style pieces like Byrd’s Miserere is spellbinding. The fine-grained texture of solo voices allows us to savour the amazing harmonic pungency of English sacred music, which at times seems almost modernist. It is a wonderful achievement.’

This concert in Great Malvern Priory is excluded from the six-concert subscription, but a concessionary ticket is available to each 117th Season Club Member. Please see pages 13-15.

iestyn Davies MBE is a British countertenor widely recognised as one of the world’s finest singers celebrated for the beauty and technical dexterity of his voice and intelligent musicianship. Iestyn began his singing life as a chorister at St John’s College, Cambridge. Later, after graduating, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music, of which he is now a Fellow.

In 2015 he delighted London theatre audiences singing the role of Farinelli in the play Farinelli and the King. His range encompasses opera, oratorio and solo recitals, the latter in a regular association with thomas Dunford.

Born in Paris, Thomas discovered the lute at the age of nine. He completed his studies in 2006 at the Paris Conservatoire, when he obtained a unanimous 1st Prize with honours, continuing his studies at the Schola Cantorum in Basel. In 2003, Thomas gave his first performance playing the role of the lutenist in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night on stage at the Comédie-Française. Since then, Thomas has played recitals throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Each musician has received numerous awards for his performances, both live and on CD. ‘Davies possesses one of the most refined and lucent countertenor voices, with flawless intonation, ease and beauty across its range and not even a hint of shrillness.... Davies is a natural match for the English Renaissance lute-song repertory, and Dunford, who has a similarly delicate approach to his instrument, matched him phrase for phrase. In repertory that is so soft, requiring careful listening, the two musicians held the audience spellbound and still.’ (The Washington Post)

Winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society award for Young British String Players, the Ruisi Quartet has established a reputation as a charismatic and expressive ensemble, delivering performances that are ‘strikingly immediate, committed and direct’ (Chichester Observer, 2014). Founded in 2012 by brothers Alessandro and Max Ruisi, the quartet performs regularly throughout the UK and Europe and was selected as Kirckman Concert Society Artists for 2018/19.

Based in London, the Quartet has given concerts at many leading venues, including the Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, Brighton Dome and Conway Hall, plus appearances in Scotland, Spain, Germany and Austria. Dedicated to continually exploring and developing, the group has studied with a wide-range of leading musicians.

Purcell’s Fantazias, written around 1680, combine dazzling contrapuntal mastery with deep expressiveness and dramatic tension created by their chromaticisms and unpredictable harmonies.

Beethoven’s Op.59 Quartets (1806) were commissioned by Prince Andrey Razumovsky, then Russian ambassador to Vienna. The first three of Beethoven’s middle period quartets, they left both their first performers and the public shocked and suspicious. Now celebrated as mainstream chamber music repertoire, these quartets have a continuing ability to surprise, challenge and inspire us.

for piano and wind instruments, K.452‘Each player in the ensemble is a virtuoso, but as a group they seem to have effortlessly acquired those essential chamber music skills of “give and take” which would grace a long-established string quartet’ (the late Guy Woolfenden).

2020 sees the 20th anniversary of the New London Chamber Ensemble. A wind quintet with a difference, the NLCE has challenged traditional ideas of chamber music with their innovative programmes. Concert appearances have taken the NLCE all over the world. Highlights include northern Sweden, the Banff Festival in Canada, the Trasimeno Festival (Perugia), the Leeds International Concert Season, premières at the Cheltenham Festival in 2011 and 2014 and concerts at Wigmore Hall and King’s Place, London.

The NLCE’s discography includes Music for Wind and Piano by Carl Nielsen (Meridian, 2009), voted CD of the year by MusicWeb International, including the Wind Quintet (1922) that they play tonight. Their programme opens with the Piano and Wind Quintet by Beethoven, allegedly inspired by Mozart’s masterpiece with the same scoring and in the same key, which is tonight’s finale. In these two works the NLCE is joined by pianist Michael Dussek, ‘an accompanist with all the skill and mastery of a confident soloist, but with the intelligence to match his playing to his partners’ without imposing or losing his own personality.’ (Classical Music Magazine). A member of three chamber ensembles, the Dussek Piano Trio, Endymion and Primavera, tonight Michael also joins the NLCE flautist Robert Manasse in a performance of Poulenc’s delightful Flute Sonata.
