Has narrow escape even as friendfalls to death from trainBy Our Staff Reporter

Praveen Raj, an employee in a private firm in Kodambakkam, diedafter falling from the footboard of an overcrowded compartment of arunning suburban train.

His friend C. Sudhakar (an accountant in a private firm in T. Nagar),who was standing next to him, managed to hold on to the pole andsurvived.

Seven passengers fell down and three lost their lives in the tragicincident that took place at around 9 a.m on Feb. 23 betweenPalavanthangal and St. Thomas Mount stations.

According to Sudhakar (a resident of Perungalathur), some otherboys were also travelling on the footboard at that time.

All of a sudden Praveen, who was standing next to him, was pulleddown by the other boys who had slipped off the train.

“I felt a jerk of somebody pulling me outwards, but managed to holdon to the pole tightly. There were screams and I soon realized that manyhad fallen off the train including my friend,” he said.

The alarm chain did not work and there was no other option exceptto wait for the train to reach Guindy station.

“I and a number of co-passengers ran on the tracks to the spot wherethe boys had fallen. My friend had got caught under the wheels of thetrain and his body parts were strewn on the tracks. The sight stillhaunts me,” he added.

“I am having nightmares and have taken a vow never to travel onthe footboard of a bus or a train,” he concluded.

Filthy service road

Sir, The service road near Kasi Theater flyover has remained filthywith dumped garbage and stagnant water for years. I have been livingin this locality for more than 22 years and have never seen this placebeing developed.

People dump garbage every day. Leftovers, plastic plates fromweddings and other stuff get scattered all over the road. A piece of treetrunk has remained stuck above the bridge since the flood in 2015.There is a spot in the service road where there is no barricade betweenthe road and river. (It actually isn’t a river. All we can see is garbagedumped in it and the Corporation never bothers to actually clean it orprovide a barricade).

All we residents seek is cleaning of the river and clearing of thegarbage. A proper barricade between the road and the river is alsonecessary for the safety of people who use this road every day.Leander Sachin, K. K. Nagar

Tamil Cinema Music 42The tradition of singing in dramas percolated into Tamil

cinema, and early Tamil films were indeed all singing affairs. An average Tamil film had as many as 30-40 songs and someeven had many more. ‘The more the merrier’ was the motto!

“Pavalakodi” (1934), which introduced many major talentsto Tamil cinema had as many as 50 songs. The composer wasPapanasam Sivan. M. K. T. Bhagavathar, S. D. Subbulakshmi(later a noted star), and the sadly neglected filmmaker K.Subramaniam, took their bow in this film. The film proved a hitmainly because of its songs.

However, “Pavalakodi” was not Papanasam Sivan’s firstfilm. His debut was in “Seetha Kalyanam” (1933). Its genesis,or ‘back story’, as they say in Hollywood, is interesting.

Indeed the name ‘Papanasam Sivan’ is itself a misnomer. Hewas neither from Papanasam nor his name was Sivan! Hisname was Ramaiah and he was an ascetically lean, pious, orthodox Brahmin from Polagam, a small village in Thanjavurdistrict. Though he was born into a well-to-do family, due toquirks of fate, he spent his early years in poverty and left hometo live in Trivandrum, (now Thiruvananthapuram), the capitalof the maharaja-ruled state Travancore. Here he learnt musicunder the noted composer Neelakanta Sivan. In deference tohis guru, he started calling himself himself Sivan. He visitedtemples and sacred places in south India and, in inspiredmoments of sheer ecstasy, he composed songs in ClassicalCarnatic style in many ragas.

After marriage and children, he needed a steady income andhe relocated himself in Papanasam, the picturesque smalltown near Thanjavur. Here he eked out a precarious living, teaching music and as a performing artiste. He composedmusic for stage plays and conducted bhajans, going round thestreets of Papanasam. Hence he came to be known as‘Papanasam Sivan!’ In this town he befriended K.Subramaniam who would play a great role in his life soon.

Looking for greener pastures, Papanasam Sivan migratedto Madras, the cultural capital of south India then and now. Here he found a Good Samaritan in a Mylapore lawyer, V.Sundaram Iyer. Mylapore had been the strong-hold of success-ful lawyers, mostly Brahmins, and is to this day a hectic hiveof culture with an artistic ambience of its own!

Sundaram Iyer became his friend, guide and patron. Sivantaught music to the lawyer’s children, the strikingly handsomeartistic teenager S. Rajam and his sister Jayalakshmi. Theyoungest, a lad of six watching it all and absorbing music bymental osmosis, would soon emerge as a multi-faceted geniusof music and movies. His name was S. Balachandar, the latter-day veena-wizard!

Meanwhile, back at Kolhapur, V. Shantaram, one of thegreatest filmmakers of India, then making his way in movieswith the celebrated Prabhat Pictures, wrote to a Madras-based movie magazine “Sound and Shadow” seeking its helpto make a Tamil film using the sets, props and all of his Hindifilm “Sairandhri” (1933, India’s first film in color). The film hadnot done well and the company was trying to cut its losses bylaunching a Tamil film using the same re-usable sets and othermaterials. Soon the Mylapore lawyer, his children, and mem-bers of an amateur drama troupe boarded a train at Madrasto Miraj (a railway junction) en route to Kolhapur. Accompa-nying them was Papanasam Sivan as music composer, bliss-fully unaware as the train chug-chugged its way, that he wason his way to fame and fortune!

In Kolhapur, Sivan composed songs for “Seetha Kalyanam”.It was his first film and he had no knowledge of film music, orchestration and its nuances. But he knew music! He chosethe tunes and melodiesof the songs of Saint Thyagaraja(Telugu) and Purandharadasa (Kannada) and wrote Tamilwords using the same ragas, meters and melodies for the filmtunes. And lo, the Tamil film tune was born!
