P salm 89 reminds us the material world is God’s creation. It is ours only as

stewards to carefully respect and carefor. As Landis Homes considers its future duringstrategic planning or just carries out routinemaintenance of our land and property, we knowwe must honor and respect our property as theLord’s and not ours.

One of our core values is stewardship defined as“a commitment to responsible and effective useof human, material and financial resources.” As we proceed with plans to develop our totalcampus and its remaining acreage we arecarefully considering our natural setting andhow we can both preserve and enhance the manynatural areas such as the woods, the streams andthe meadowland. This came out as a consistenttheme during our campus wide master planningprocess, which received input from various focusgroups of residents, staff, board and community.

Landis Homes is uniquely surrounded byagricultural zoning and is also less than a milefrom urban sprawl and business development. Itis a melding place for both country and town. Wehear the honking of geese; see the grazing cattle

while swans and mallard ducks grace the pond.Residents tend to their vegetables and flowergardens. Resident volunteers cut flowers fromthe court yard plots to provide centerpieces todining tables. We were recently privileged tohave a beautiful prayer and memory gardendedicated.

On a personal note, both of us now live in theurban sprawl north of Lancaster city within milesof Landis Homes, but we share a similar agrarianbackground. One of us grew up on a farm inDauphin County, Pennsylvania, the other in thecountryside of Ethiopia. Both of us were taughtfrom childhood the benefits of caring for theearth. We choose to take Psalm 89:11 seriously aswe respect the God who created the heavens andcares for the earth and all its people.

Two notable initiatives this year include thebeginning of Bethany Fellowship at LandisHomes which provides church membership tothose not having a local church tie, and ourcommitment to “person centered care” for theway we provide services throughout the campus.

We continue to be very encouraged to see ourmany residents and staff enthusiastic about thethings they do on a day-to-day basis. We doindeed believe that we have been and willcontinue to be a great place to live and work.Thank you your prayers as we continue with thevision and mission of Landis Homes.

Courtyard RailroadIn the winter of 2005-6 the Landis Homes Courtyard Railroad clubbegan to take shape. Luke Bomberger, pictured, had the originalidea and many others joined him to launch the 1:29 scale trainproject in Aspen Courtyard. An initial layout of the tracks wasinstalled with buildings, lighting, and landscaping added by thehelp of many, including the maintenance department. The trains have a posted schedule of operation for the enjoymentof residents, staff and visitors who happen by.

Passing on the Comfort Mennonite Central Committee’s traveling quilts exhibit, Passingon the Comfort, drew over 1400 people to Landis Homes inJanuary 2006. The exhibit featured 18 quilts, a sample of themany made by the North American Mennonites and given topersons in Europe fleeing the ravages of WWII. The eight-dayevent raised over $4400.00 for current MCC relief projects.

Flowers for EveryoneThanks to the team effort of many, the dining roomson campus are graced with the beauty of freshflowers during much of the year. Marilyn Clisham,pictured above, spends many hours planting andcultivating flowerbeds including the new raised bedscreated specifically for flowers to cut. Helen Hess,pictured left, harvests and arranges the flowers, andputs them in the dining rooms each week.

Gabe Volunteers With the passing of Gabe’s specialfriend, Bob Bosley this past year, manypersons, including residents, staff andvisitors, have come forward to give thecampus dog, Gabe, the daily walks heneeds to live well. The campus woods,ponds and walking paths are favoriteplaces for Gabe to explore. The loveand attention flows both ways.
